Falvey: Twins’ Offseason “Heavy Lifting” is Done but…

The Minnesota Twins are just one week from pitchers and catchers reporting to Fort Myers for Spring Training. Yet, the team’s offseason feels like it just got started.

So forgive those who might be itching for one more big signing or that blockbuster which hasn’t yet happened. With the frigid temperature outside your front door, it’s hard to believe baseball is right around the corner.

Twins’ President of Baseball Operations, Derek Falvey, spoke with media via Zoom today. He claims the offseason’s “heavy lifting” is complete. After tying up some loose ends and rounding out the roster, the organization looks ready to turn its attention toward playing games.

Derek Falvey said on Nelson Cruz's zoom call that the Twins are likely done adding "big ticket" contracts this offseason, which seems a pretty broad hint that Jake Odorizzi is not coming back. Might make Sergio Romo or Tyler Clippard less likely, too, depending on price.

Heavy lifting complete?

I’m intrigued by what Falvey told reporters today, compared to what some of those same media members claim to be hearing. The Twins supposedly have offers out to at least one starting pitcher, according to KSTP (above).

Maybe the unknown pitcher, who’s reportedly staring at a Twins’ contract, wouldn’t move the needle enough to be considered “big ticket”. But signing a 5th starting pitcher, essentially closing out any competition left in the rotation, seems to constitute “heavy lifting”, by most standards.

I guess we’ll just wait and see. Some expect Minnesota to continue making moves well into Spring Training.
