Timberwolves’ Bench Setup Could Be Interesting After Chris Finch Knee Injury
Last night was one of the best in Minnesota Timberwolves history. Anthony Edwards & Co didn’t just defeat the Phoenix Suns in round one of the 2024 NBA Playoffs, they swept them in dominating fashion, opening eyes around the league as to what the ceiling is for this team.

But there was one event that occurred late in game four that hung over the evening like a light semi-transparent cloud. With under two minutes remaining in the 4th quarter, Mike Conley was hip-checked out of bounds by Bradley Beal… and his fall was broken by Chris Finch’s knees.

After the game, Finch was diagnosed with a ruptured patellar tendon (knee), an injury that requires surgery and is likely to put him in a straight-leg cast for months.
A patellar tendon rupture involves a complete tear of the tendon that runs from the patella’s inferior pole to the tibial tubercle. It is typically seen in males in their third or fourth decade of life. It tends to result when a weakened tendon is placed under high tensile forces.

We all know Finchy isn’t going to allow this injury stop him from being on the Wolves’ bench for round two. But given the cast and crutches he’ll have to tout, the setup on Minnesota’s bench could be a bit unique.
Re: Chris Finch, he'll need surgery to repair his ruptured patellar tendon and most rehab protocols have him in a brace (locked into full knee extension) and crutches for at least 6 weeks. He'll still be able to coach but the set-up on the sideline might be a little interesting.

For a partial tear, recovery time can range from several weeks to several months. This is helped by the use of immobilization, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory medication. The time to complete recovery from a patellar tendon tear takes roughly 6 months.

Luckily, Chris Finch and the Minnesota Timberwolves will have a week or more to get his surgery done and figure out what kind of bench setup they will need, in order to keep the head coach comfortable and his knee safe, while coaching on the sideline. The Wolves will face the winner of Nuggets vs Lakers (DEN leads 3-1).
