According to NBA insider Scoop B Robinson, the Wolves are interested in acquiring Kyrie Irving from the dumpster fire currently going on in Dallas right now, after the Mavericks and former head coach Jason Kidd parted ways this week.

The Minnesota Timberwolves — who Robinson says are “aggressively searching for an elite, veteran point guard” — are clearly interested in Irving.

While public indications suggest Irving genuinely loves Dallas, enjoys playing for the Mavericks, and wants to stay, Masai Ujiri’s arrival signals that no one is untouchable as the franchise considers a total rebuild around reigning Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg.

Minnesota is watching closely. The Timberwolves are aggressively searching for an elite, veteran point guard to pair with franchise cornerstone Anthony Edwards.

But here’s what else makes this report intriguing. It specifically reveals that Anthony Edwards is a part of Minnesota’s internal conversations surrounding the possible addition of Kyrie Irving.

Report: Anthony Edwards pushing for Kyrie Irving

In fact, per Robinson, Ant isn’t just interested in playing with Kyrie, he’s “advocating heavily behind the scenes” for Timberwolves decision-makers (probably Connelly) to go after the 34-year-old point guard, who’s coming off a full season where he did not take the floor, following a March, 2025 ACL surgery.

For the record, In fact, if I didn’t know any better, I’d say that the quote “from a Timberwolves source” in Scoop B’s article sure sounds like Tim Connelly, himself. I can’t think of anyone else who would reply back in a text, “If Kyrie came, that would be sweet.”

While many league insiders suggested Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant was the target, sources close to Morant have repeatedly shut that down, reiterating his commitment to Memphis.

Instead, Kyrie Irving’s name is being loudly whispered. A well-placed and respected NBA fixture shared a firm belief that a healthy Irving is the exact missing piece to get Minnesota over the Conference Finals hump:

Crucially, the interest is mutual. Anthony Edwards is reportedly privately sharing that he would love teaming up with Irving in Minnesota, advocating heavily for the move behind the scenes. “Ant has a mutual respect for Kyrie and for what he’s done in this league,” a Timberwolves source with knowledge of the situation noted. “If Kyrie came, it would be sweet.”

Can Kyrie Irving still play? Assuming he fully recovers form the knee injury that ended his season last year, that answer should be “yes,” and for multiple seasons. Irving is a 9x All-Star and 3x All-NBA guard who won a championship back in 2016.

Can Kyrie Irving still play at a high level?

The last time we saw Kyrie Irving — a former No. 1 overall draft pick out of Duke — play basketball was the 2024-25 NBA Playoffs. That regular season, Irving averaged 24.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game (36.1 MPG).

Over the course of his 14-year NBA career, Kyrie has played for four different teams (Cavaliers, Nets, Mavericks, Celtics), averaging 23.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game (34.5 MPG). In other words, father time hadn’t caught up with Irving, as of over one year ago.

Unfortunately, the Minnesota Timberwolves are watching the rest of the NBA Playoffs from home, after they lost to the San Antonio Spurs in six games during the semi-finals, thwarting what would have been a third-straight run at the Western Conference Finals.

Now, the stage is Tim Connelly’s. And all eyes — not just from within the MN Timberwolves’ fanbase, but the entire basketball world — are on the well-respected president of basketball operations, who is known for attempting, and a few times completing massive blockbuster trades.

If he can swing a deal for Kyrie Irving, it could prove to be the most impactful of his tenure leading Minnesota. And that is saying something, since this is the same guy who traded for Rudy Gobert and traded away Karl Anthony Towns.
