Timberwolves Bringing Back Fan Favorite Guard

Coming into the offseason there was nothing the Minnesota Timberwolves needed more than competent guard play. Anthony Edwards was hoping for a running mate going into next season, and Tim Connelly presented that in the form of LaMelo Ball.
How many games Ball plays obviously remains to be seen, but Minnesota is clearly banking on him staying healthy, and closer to last season’s 72 games than the 22 and 47 he played the two years before that.
Hyland, a Tim Connelly gem from his time in Denver, won’t be let go by the Timberwolves next season.
Bones Hyland returns to MN Timberwolves backcourt
Last season Bones Hyland worked his way into a healthy amount of minutes for Chris Finch. That’s not easy to do without tenure or star power, but the fan-favorite proved his worth. Now he’s returning on a new deal.
Bones Hyland has agreed to return to the Minnesota Timberwolves next season, sources told @TheAthletic. Hyland established himself as a rotation player, teaming with Ayo Dosunmu in the "Twin Turbos" backcourt.

Jon Krawczynski (The Athletic) has reported that Hyland’s new contract is a one-year deal for the league minimum, worth roughly $2.9 million. Thanks to the cap relief that comes with minimum deals for veterans, it only counts as about $2.45 million against Minnesota’s cap, a great get for a team plenty strapped for space, and still needing help at the power forward position.
Bones averaged 16.6 minutes per game in 2025-26, and turned in 8.5 points per game. His 45.3% shooting from the field was a career-best, and his 38.8% from deep checked in similarly considering the volume. Hyland is an adequate ball-handler, and his ability to bump Anthony Edwards from bringing it up the court is something the Timberwolves valued.

This isn’t a big splash, but Hyland immediately generated depth behind the recently acquired Ball, and that was always going to be necessary for a guy who has missed such significant amounts of time.
At this point Connelly has done a lot of heavy lifting on the guard front. He’ll need to turn his attention to a big man at some point, and that’s where the real analysis of the Minnesota Timberwolves roster will fall. If there’s a legitimate power forward that can join this group, then the Timberwolves should feel good about their chances to compete for a title.
