Minnesota Timberwolves emerging superstar, Anthony Edwards, signed a maximum contract extension over the offseason that will make him over $200 million between the ages of 23 and 27. Apparently, that experience has changed him.

So much so that he doesn’t feel right wearing No. 1 on his jersey any longer. Thus, Ant will switch to No. 5 for the upcoming NBA season. Edwards wore No. 5 throughout his high school and college career. When he was drafted by the Timberwolves, No. 5 was already taken so he chose No. 1. Here’s what he told Shams (The Athletic) in a 1v1 interview revealing the change.

The number change will catch some headlines and irritate fans who have spent money on his old No. 1 jersey but it was the rest of Ant’s interview that’s worth paying attention to.

Anthony Edwards is one of the most likeable players in the league and this 3:33 video is a perfect example of why. Sitting in his living room, wearing a white tank top, the 2020 #1 overall pick answered questions about his new contract, his growing leadership role and his relationship with Karl-Anthony Towns.

Shams: I know you mentioned KAT and trying to get him to an MVP level. What’s that dynamic been between you two, trying to continue to lead this team to more wins?

Edwards: I mean, we haven’t really did what we was supposed to do yet. KAT is super good, man. I gotta take more advantage of it. This year, we’re gonna be a lot better. A lot better.

Shams: You sound like you already know what’s coming…

Edwards: I mean, I just know KAT’s been working, man. So you know, it’s gonna be scary.

When asked about his personal goals, Edwards changed the subject to team goals and what the Wolves need from his teammates if they’re going to rise up as formidable Western Conference contenders.

Shams: What kind of goals have you set for yourself?

Edwards: I mean I’ve only got team goals, man. The individual stuff gonna come if you win as a team. We wanna win 50 games this year, we wanna get KAT to MVP level this year. We want Jaden [McDaniels] to be the best three and D guy in the NBA, but he’s more than a 3 and D guy; he got real game. We want Rudy [Gobert] to be the defensive player of the year. Like, we just want all the things that that is supposed to be and, you know, we’re gonna work for it so hopefully it’ll be a great year.

Who knows what will happen with the Minnesota Timberwolves, both during the upcoming season and beyond. But there’s no doubt in my mind that, barring any sort of catastrophic event or injury, Anthony Edwards will be one of the best players and biggest superstars in the NBA.
