On Saturday night, the Minnesota Timberwolves faced off against the San Antonio Spurs. What unfolded was a tale of two halves that ultimately ended in a 126-123 defeat. Along the way, however, Anthony Edwards delivered a performance for the ages, pouring in a career-high 55 points.

It has been that kind of season for the Timberwolves’ superstar. Six years into his career, Edwards has taken the most significant leap forward yet. He is playing the best basketball of his life, and still, that wasn’t enough to earn him a starting spot in the All-Star Game.

Anthony Edwards Left Out For Minnesota Timberwolves

For years, the Western Conference has been the more difficult side of the NBA, a reality the Timberwolves see every time they look at the standings. Right now, the West also boasts significantly more star power, and that depth ultimately kept Anthony Edwards out of the starting lineup.

The manner in which it unfolded made the snub even more glaring. With fan voting accounting for 50% of the decision, it proved to be the deciding factor in favor of Victor Wembanyama. Edwards was voted a starter by both players and media, yet still missed out. Meanwhile, Wembanyama, who was voted a starter by media only, secured his place in the starting five.

Edwards has undeniably elevated his game this season. His 29.6 points per game are a career-high, and he is shooting the best percentages of his career from both the field (.504) and from three-point range (.418).

Now headed to his fourth consecutive All-Star Game, it’s disappointing that this one won’t come with a starting nod. Losing a tie breaker to Wembanyama because of fan voting takes some shine away form just how extraordinary Edwards has been.

Beyond the numbers, Edwards has also shouldered increased point guard responsibilities for a Minnesota Timberwolves team still searching for stability at that position. At the peak of his rising superstardom, this snub simply adds another chip to his shoulder.
