Report: Timberwolves Superstar Added More MJ/Kobe to His Offense

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves. Just because he’s been operating in the shadows, it doesn’t mean Ant isn’t working to perfect his craft.
Every offseason, the former No. 1 overall pick picks one area of his game to hyper focus on improving or adding to his nightly repertoire. Last year, it was his 3-point shot. After drilling a respectable 35.7% of his shots from distance in 2023, Edwards lifted his three point percentage to 39.5% in 2024.
He also nearly doubled his makes from 2.4 per game to 4.1. This resulted in him leading the NBA with 320 3-point makes. So what does Edwards have in store this year?

This time, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Ant has spent the summer watching a lot of Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant’s film and modeling his game after them. Specifically, Edwards has been in the lab working on his post-up game, much like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has seemed to perfect too.

“I’ve been told this offseason, Anthony Edwards’ No. 1 focus, a new area of development, and that’s the postup game. The mid post. The high post. Low post. Establishing a mid-range game and the fadeaway shot from the post, a la Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.
I’m told he’s been watching a lot of tape of Kobe and MJ, studying their game, and how they were able to get their shot off from the postup game. Minnesota believes this part of his game will become a go-to element, especially as games stagnate down the stretch, become slower, particularly come playoff time.
So Edwards has understood, he needs to take the next step in his game if this team is going to take the next step. That’s why he’s been in the Timberwolves’ facility since June.”

Edwards already has a full arsenal of tools at his disposal that he can deploy at any given moment. Adding a more consistent postup game to the mix? That would be just filthy, if he can pull it off with consistency.
Half the time, that is the challenge for young players. We see the incredible skills that Ant has to show off, and his averages continue to surge (27.6 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 4.5 SPG in 2024-25). For the 24-year-old three-time All-Star to take the next step, however, the Wolves need even more consistency, over 82 games, not to mention a playoff run.
Perhaps adding a Kobe/MJ style mid-range post game will help him do exactly that. We’ll find out soon enough. The Minnesota Timberwolves will begin next week.
