Lynx Coach, Cheryl Reeve Gets Extension and Additional Title: General Manager
Per Thursday’s Minnesota Lynx announcement, Cheryl Reeve has received a multiyear contract extension. The 51 year-old Reeve has also been appointed as the team’s General Manager. On top of continuing to lead the reigning WNBA Champions from the sidelines, Reeve has always done plenty of work behind the scenes. Here is a clip from the Star Tribune’s by Kent Youngblood:
In a day-to-day sense, Reeve’s role won’t change. Reeve, who came to Minnesota to coach the Lynx in 2010, was always the one involved in preparing for the draft, pursuing and negotiating with free agents and constructing the roster for a team that won its fourth WNBA title in seven seasons last fall. The dynamic with Griffith was always collaborative.
“He was a part of every process,” Reeve said. “He was the voice, oftentimes, in trade calls with the league.”
But it was Reeve, always the preparer, who plotted the team’s course.

There is always that individual at the office who is greatly out producing their peers. The one that’s crushing quota and enjoying Friday afternoons on the golf course. Cheryl Reeve is that person (except she probably stays at the office and piles it on).
After leading the Lynx to 4 WNBA Championships in the past 7 years, locking up Reeve seems to be a no-brainer. The Star Tribune didn’t just hand out their 2017 “Sportsperson of the Year” award. That prestigious honor isn’t treated like champagne at New Years party.
As of Friday afternoon, the terms associated with the deal weren’t available.
Cheryl Reeve is now the sixth dual coach/GM in the WNBA. Here are the other five: Amber Stocks (Chicago), Curt Miller (Connecticut), Pokey Chatman (Indiana), Bill Laimbeer (Las Vegas), and Mike Thibault (Washington). The Lynx executive VP, Robert Griffin, previously held the GM role.
Besides hosting the All-Star Game in 2018, Minnesota will be pursuing their 5th ring. That’s Kobe Bryant stuff.
The core from last years title team will be back for another run. On top of that, extensions for members of Reeve’s staff also were announced. Cheryl Reeve seems primed to continue her out-of-this world tenure with the Glen Taylor-owned franchise.
Percentage wise, Reeve is the all-time winningest coach in the history of the WNBA. No disrespect to her or the late Pat Summitt, but neither are considered the Tom Brady of their profession…. yet. As for the GOAT, I wonder if he’ll ever make the jump to the next level.
