Gophers Offer FCS’ Best Quarterback Max Brosmer and Fit Could be Perfect

Well, it’s nice to see that PJ Fleck feels the same way I do. The Minnesota Gophers desperately need a quarterback that he can trust to throw the football on a much more regular basis next season. How desperately?

Minnesota Gophers offer New Hampshire quarterback Max Brosmer

Enough that they waited exactly one day into the bowl season transfer portal frenzy to offer a new QB. And after some preliminary research, the fit could be perfect. New Hampshire’s Max Brosmer, who announced his Minnesota offer on Twitter Monday morning, was statistically the best FCS quarterback in the country last season, throwing for nearly 3,500 yards, 29 touchdowns and just 6 interceptions.

After watching some of his highlights and reading what I’ve been able to, early on, it’s clear Max is the definition of a playmaker. He has a really quick release and strong arm, which he likes to show off from all angles, releases and foot placement.

He’s a confident kid who loves to make something out of nothing, when given the opportunity, and he has the speed and quickness to escape and run for 40 yards at any moment. Could he run into problems throwing off his back foot and into outnumbered coverages in the Big Ten? Sure… but I’ll take that risk.

Max Brosmer by the numbers

But don’t confuse his playmaking capabilities with decision-making problems. In the last two seasons, the Georgia native has thrown for 56 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He has the elusiveness to make plays out of the pocket but he’d rather make plays in it, only rushing for 127 yards last season.

If you want more consistency at the most important position in sports? That’s Max Brosmer, a 2-year full-time starter for the Wildcats, has gradually improved every season of his career. But something clicked for Brosmer before the 2022 season, after recovering from an ACL tear that caused him to miss the entire 2021 season.

From that point, he’s been arguably the best quarterback in the FCS. He was recently named 1st-Team All-Conference (CAA) for 2023 and led all FCS QBs in passing yards and total yards, coming in 2nd in passing touchdowns.

Not only does Brosmer, who has only one year of eligibility remaining, bring exactly what the Gophers need on the football field (talent, playmaking ability, excitement), but he brings exactly what PJ Fleck looks for in all of his players, but especially in his quarterbacks.

Good player, great person

He has his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science and will enroll in the medical school of his next University. Guess who has a great medical school? You guessed it. Another thing PJ Fleck loves about this kid, I’m sure: He wins just as many leadership and academic awards/honors as he does football ones.

Brosmer, co-recipient of last year’s CAA Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, graduated in May 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science: Medical and Veterinary Science (3.88 cumulative GPA) and is pursuing a master’s in  kinesiology: exercise science.

Off the field, Brosmer is a national SAAC member. He volunteers for Be the Match, an organization that is the global leader in bone marrow transplantation, and for Read Across America. Every summer, he returns to Centennial High School to help coach the football team and also holds private QB sessions with local quarterbacks in the Atlanta area. — UNH Wildcats website

  • Walter Payton Award Finalist
  • William V. Campbell Trophy Semifinalist

  • Member of the CAA Football Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll for the spring and fall semester (2019)

Can PJ Fleck change his best?

If Fleck actually changes his best and allows a more risk/reward offensive scheme and game script, Max Brosmer could be the exact quarterback he needs to graduate his program into the big boy Big Ten that the Gophers will be a part of for the foreseeable future. Watch this video and it’s difficult not to immediately like this dude.

Any Big Ten West team unwilling to do that, will fall by the wayside with UCLA, USC, Oregon and Washington joining the conference next season and divisions no longer in existence.
