When Jerry Kill left the Minnesota Gophers program, he handed things over to his buddy Tracy Claeys. That wasn’t going to work going forward and P.J. Fleck was hired. There has been some bad blood between the two over the years, but their paths rarely cross.

On Friday the Gophers announced their 2026 coaching staff. We already knew about plenty of the moves. One we weren’t aware of was a former Kill assistant rejoining the program, and that’s a bit of an odd decision.

Matt Limegrover back with the Minnesota Gophers

From 2011 through 2015 Matt Limegrover was a coach on the MN Gophers staff. First he was the offensive coordinator, and then eventually an assistant head coach. Limegrover moved on when Kill left, but now he is back.

Limegrover initially landed as the Penn State offensive line coach after leaving Minnesota. He held that position from 2016 through 2019. He also held roles as the offensive line coach for both Arkansas State and Kent State in the years since.

After not coaching in 2025, he is back in action for the Gophers. P.J. Fleck has given Limegrover an assistant offensive line title, and he’ll be tasked with helping the talent protect quarterback Drake Lindsey.

Last season as a redshirt freshman, Lindsey took 21 sacks behind Minnesota’s line. Obviously the goal would be to reduce that number over the course of a 13-game season. Better pass protection and more time should only help Lindsey to take yet another step forward in the productivity department.

With the coaching staff now set, Fleck can take his newly-acquired portal talent, pair it with a strong recruiting class, and look to advance beyond the 8-5 record in 2025.
