Accolades Raining Down on Gophers QB Max Brosmer

Homecoming in Dinkytown over the weekend brought plenty of fans to Huntington Bank Stadium. The Maryland Terrapins entered Saturday’s contest as slight underdogs vs the Minnesota Gophers. But pretty much the moment Max Brosmer stepped on the field, things got lopsided quick.
To say that Max Brosmer played well would be underselling the performance. The Gophers quarterback not only had his best game of the season, but that may have been among the best games played by anyone in college football all year.
Brosmer completed 26-of-33 passes for 320 yards and four touchdowns. Pro Football Focus graded his performance as a 93.3 overall, good for 2nd best among power four quarterbacks in Week 9. And that’s far from the only weekly-accolade Minnesota’s new one-and-done QB has received today.
- 1. Tayler Green, Arkanasas – 94.0
- 2. Max Brosmer, Minnesota – 93.3
- 4. Riley Leonard, Notre Dame – 91.2
- 7. Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss – 80.8
- 8. Shedeur Sanders, Colorado – 80.1
- 9. Jalen Milroe, Alabama – 79.7

Minnesota Gophers QB Max Brosmer grabbing all the weekly accolades
Other awards and accolades that have already been announced for Max Brosmer today include Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week along with being named one of the East vs West Shrine Bowl MMQBs and Manning Award Star of the Week Nominees.
The Big Ten, now flush with elite teams and great quarterbacks, is a gauntlet on a weekly basis. Yet, here’s a Minnesota Gophers standing atop the QB mountain after one of the best statistical performances, and starts to a season, in program history.

Weekly performance has become something of a standard for Brosmer at this point. He has led the Gophers to three straight wins, and it’s not inconceivable that Minnesota could win out. They are two-point favorites on the road this weekend against a ranked Illinois squad.
Look, anything can happen when you have a QB who has thrown for 1800 yards, 12 touchdowns and just 4 interceptions… at a 70% clip. Oh, and did you know this is his first season leading the Gophers, so he gets noticeably better with every game.
Yearly honors could come for Gophers’ Brosmer too
Does Brosmer have enough time to work his way into the Heisman race? Probably not… but he could certainly make some noise in other areas (like the NFL Draft?). At some point, steam will start regarding his ability as a draft prospect, and there is no reason why he shouldn’t be invited to postseason all-star games. Obviously, the Shrine Bowl is already watching.

Just another week (another year) for Brosmer
The thing is, this isn’t new for Brosmer. The graduate transfer has been balling out most of the season. And before he got to Minnesota, he was doing the same thing for FCS New Hampshire. At this point, there’s an argument to be had that he is the best Gopher quarterback in school history.
P.J. Fleck’s offense looks so unrecognizable with Brosmer at the helm, that opponents are struggling to adjust. Even Maryland head coach Mike Locksley said after Brosmer threw all over him, that their defense entered the game wanting to stop the run first. But that is far from Minnesota’s biggest threat in 2024.

It’s unfortunate that this is the final season of Brosmer’s eligibility. What he has done thus far for the Gophers program could have substantial ripple effects in the way that Fleck operates offensively going forward.
Whatever Drake Lindsey can take, from watching his teammate this season, will hopefully make an impact on a guy that Fleck believes in, as the next leader of his program, once Max Brosmer moves on.
The Minnesota Gophers have four games left on their regular season schedule. If Max can continue to get better and more comfortable, there’s really no ceiling on where this team can end up, when the season is over.
