P.J. Fleck coached the Minnesota Gophers to an 8-5 record last season. They punctuated the year with a Rate Bowl victory over New Mexico. It wasn’t exactly the heights they had hoped to reach, and with the best recruiting class in program history, 2026 could be a chance to take a step forward.

The Gophers lost some talent in the transfer portal, but they also grabbed some new difference makers. Another hometown kid, Parker Knutson, will hope to fill the hole left by Koi Perich at the safety position. Another year of Drake Lindsey development isn’t a bad thing either.

Now with the schedule out, we can take a look at what a realistic series of outcomes may look like.

Minnesota Gophers 2026 schedule released

The Minnesota Gophers will play 12 regular season games in 2026. Three of them are non-conference tilts, and all of those will be played at Huntington Bank Stadium. The Gophers hosting SEC foe Mississippi State could prove to be an impressive test early.

After having both Oregon and Ohio State on the schedule last year, Minnesota will avoid both blue bloods in the Big Ten. They will see Michigan,, Indiana, and Penn State however.

Both Michigan and Penn State are coming off coaching changes. Indiana is the reigning national champion with Curt Cignetti having fulfilled his “Google me” promise.

Rivalry games with Iowa and Wisconsin maintain a spot on the calendar, and Big Ten play kicks off with another trip out west to face Washington.

What to expect from the 2026 MN Gophers

Given the youth that Minnesota had at several key positions last year, it shouldn’t be a reach to suggest the continued development will pay dividends. Lindsey is back, and so too is the entire edge rushing group. Perry Thompson adds to the wide receiver room, and Darius Taylor will get another crack at a healthy season too.

The returning talent isn’t the whole story for Minnesota though. Their schedule isn’t exactly the cakewalk that was set up in 2025. After predicting a potential 10-win season last year, I’m less confident in the path forward for 2026.

Two of the three non-conference games as certain wins. The Minnesota Gophers will trounce Eastern Illinois and Akron. They should beat Mississippi State, who finished 5-8 on a four-game losing streak, but roster turnover could have them in a better spot.

Indiana at Memorial Stadium is a near-certain loss, as is playing at Happy Valley against Penn State. The uncertainty Kyle Whittingham has at Michigan may make them ripe for the picking, and Luke Fickell’s Badgers may not be good again despite keeping him around.

Minnesota will want to exact revenge against Northwestern after the tight loss at Wrigley Field. It won’t be a cake walk to beat Washington on the road either. If we set the over/under at seven wins, I think I’d cautiously take the high side.
