It’s been a long and stupidly drawn out process for Ben Johnson, as he’s tried to formulate a staff as new head coach of the Minnesota Gophers men’s basketball team. Finally, nearly two months after being hired, it appears that Ben’s third and final assistant has passed the stringent U of M background and hiring process. His name is Marcus Jenkins and he’s been the Associate Head Coach at the University of Richmond since 2018.

The news of Jenkins’ hire first came via GopherIllustrated.com’s Ryan James last night on their “Gopher Report” message board.

The third basketball assistant will be…

Marcus Jenkins, the associate head coach of Richmond.

Jenkins played at Air Force and before he went into college coaching he served out his military time on an Air Force base. Since then he has spent most of his college coaching career at Richmond with a brief stop at Princeton.

Jenkins is credited with recruiting many of the top players that have been at Richmond in the last several years.

Recruiting recruiting recruiting

Jenkins is another assistant coach who’s known for his recruiting chops, as you can see Ryan mention above. We’ll see what Ben and his staff can do with what little time they have left to recruit for 2021. Because of the unknowns that plagued this offseason and the lack of help the University compliance department offered in expediting the assistant coach hiring process, they’ll get a deserved pass for both their 2021 recruiting and on-court play, should either flounder.

But that won’t be the case with the mammoth 2022 high school basketball recruiting class in Minnesota. It appears to be one of the best and deepest state history. Insiders expect Johnson to do well with the kids at the top and his job security needs it too.
