Bombas and Bullpen Lead Twins Past White Sox in Season Opener

The Minnesota Twins are FINALLY back. The 2020 season started against the Chicago White Sox on Friday night, and the Bomba Squad picked up right where they left off, 2019. I don’t know if you remember last year, (when the Twins broke the single season record with 307 home runs), but Max Kepler served a reminder quickly…

Like, on the first pitch of the season. Then again in my second at-bat. The Twins went on to put up four more runs in that In the 1st inning, after Kepler’s first HR, against White Sox “ace” Lucas Giolito.

Seriously how could you not love this team? Everything was looking good for the Twins, and there was no way Berrios was going to give up this lead right? False. Berrios went on to allow 4 runs in the second including this game tying game from White Sox 3B Yoan Moncada.

Runs Come Early

Jose Berrios allowed one run in the 1st, then labored through 3 more innings. He finished with a stat line of: 4.0 IP, 7H, 5ER, 1BB, and only 1 SO. Obviously, it wasn’t the start Berrios was looking for. I am willing to chalk that one up to the 8 month offseason.

With the game tied 5-5 in the top of the 4th inning, Jorge Polanco singled and drove in both Luis Arraez and Miguel Sano, reclaiming the lead by two runs. The game was stagnant until the 7th inning when the Twins put up 3 runs, including RBI singles from Luis Arraez and Eddie Rosario. Cody Stashak came in and recorded the final six outs for the Twins, preserving the 10-5 victory.

The Best

Not only did Max Kepler hit the first Bomba of the season for the Twins, but he is on track for 120 home runs this year. Clearly a strong MVP candidate.

The Bullpen

The Twins bullpen was untouchable… which they needed after Berrios” struggle. Trevor May, Tyler Duffey and Cody Stashak all pitched scoreless innings. Stashak even pitched two

The Worst

Jose Berrios struggled in his first start of 2020. He will look to put that behind him with his next start most likely coming next Thursday at home against the Indians.

The Twins return to action tomorrow against the White Sox at 1:10 pm, with Randy Dobnak (0-0) 0.00 ERA vs Dallas Keuchel (0-0) 0.00 ERA.

1 down, 59 to go.
