General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah went gangbusters during free agency, spending handsomely with the ample cap space he and his front office afforded themselves this offseason.

If there’s an area where the Vikings should still be looking for a potential Week 1 starters, however, it’s probably at cornerback. With just over 48 hours remaining until the draft, Minnesota currently has Byron Murphy Jr. slotted in at CB1, after he signed an impressive new contract last month.

Behind Murphy Jr on the depth chart sit former Packer/Eagle, Isaiah Rodgers, who the Vikings made a priority early on in free agency. The 27-year-old CB is being paid like a fringe starter, too. Nonetheless, Rodgers only started three games last season in Philly and has never been a lock starter during his four-year NFL career.

Minnesota Vikings still in need of cornerback help

After Rodgers, the Minnesota Vikings have Mekhi Blackmon, who’s still recovering from offseason ACL surgery. Then, we get into depth talent like Jeff Okudah, Ambry Thomas, Dwight McGlothern and Bubba Bolden.

While some believe the purple CB group could hold its own in 2025, as currently constructed, it seems more likely they add another starter-type talent to the cornerback room between now and the end of training camp.

Rumors have flown around regarding who that cornerback will be, including some intoxicating speculation connecting the MN Vikings to stud talent, Asante Samuel Jr. Then, there are Stephon Gilmore and Shaq Griffin, two veterans who were staples of Minnesota’s secondary in 2024.

Both currently remain free agents and there has even been chatter that one (or both) could be on the Vikings’ radar for 2025, too. Until they are signed, sealed and delivered to TCO Performance Center, however, free agents are still expected to at least flirt with other teams, should opportunities present themselves.

Stephon Gilmore flirting with Dallas Cowboys

Take Stephon Gilmore, for instance. Yes, the 34-year-old veteran was good in purple last season, but he’s familiar with a lot of different NFL surroundings, seeing as he has played for six different teams through the course of his 13 year professional football career.

His most recent home, prior to joining the Minnesota Vikings, was in Dallas where the five-time Pro Bowler played with the Cowboys for one season, in 2023. He started all 17 games that year, and on Tuesday, he was spotted in Dallas visiting the Cowboys and discussing a possible return to the Big D.

Gilmore will be 35 years old by the end of the 2025 season. While he claimed he was pondering retirment earlier in the offseason, that appears unlikely, at this point. While he isn’t the shutdown CB he once was, Stephon Gilmore would immediately change the complexion of Minnesota’s secondary, if he found his way out of Dallas and back at TCO Performance Center.

Is Stephon Gilmore any good still?

Per Pro Football Focus, Gilmore posted a 62.2 defensive grade last year, way down from the 70-80+ grades he’s earned throughout his illustrious NFL career. His 904 total snaps with the Vikings were on par with the 1,000+ he reported the two previous seasons, had he played all 17 regular season games, instead of just 15. While his overall and coverage grades were down (59.2), Gilmore was solid defending the run (72.6), per usual.

Stephon Gilmore was a very late training camp/preseason addition to Brian Flores’ defense last year. Upon signing, he was immediately slotted in as a regular starter next to Byron Muphy Jr. He snagged just one interception as a Viking, to go along with his nine passes defensed.

For what it’s worth, his lone INT was thrown by Aaron Rodgers during the Minnesota Vikings victory in a London over the New York Jets… Last year with Minnesota Gilmore played on a one-year deal worth $7 million. It’s unlikely he gets that much this time around, but unlike dollar bills, competent corners don’t grow on trees.

MN Vikings could still be in play for Gilmore

If Gilmore leaves the Dallas Cowboys facilities without a deal, he’ll remain in play for the Minnesota Vikings. Even if the Minnesota Vikings land a cornerback early in the NFL Draft, re-upping with a veteran that they are familiar with still makes sense.

Rather than pivoting to an unknown commodity, either Stephon Gilmore or Shaq Griffin could slot it next to, or on the other side of Murphy Jr., with Isaiah Rodgers to round out the top what would then be a well-balanced CB room.

Minnesota Vikings Planning a Cornerback Reunion After the Draft…? https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/nfl-free-agent-rumors-stephon-gilmore-shaq-griffin/ Thu, 17 Apr 2025 14:31:45 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=62477 The moment NFL free agency kicked off a month ago, general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah went gangbusters for the Minnesota Vikings. He went in with a strategy, picked his spots early and got many of the Vikings’ top targets signed.

When the dust settled a couple weeks later, there were over a dozen new Vikings on the roster, thanks to one of the biggest spending sprees league-wide so far this offseason. Long-term, spending in free agency every offseason is not a viable strategy for winning at the NFL level. Overpaying aging veterans usually isn’t.

If the Vikings are going to fully take advantage of JJ McCarthy’s rookie contract window, and succeed beyond it — they’ll need to start adding better, more talented players through the NFL Draft. Unfortunately, Kwesi & Co own just four picks, heading into draft week 2025.

Familiar faces could return for Minnesota Vikings

That’s not a lot of ammo for a team needing help at CB, S, WR, OL and QB (among others). Even if they trade back and collect more picks, the odds that mid-late round rookies are able to contribute in 2025 (or ever) gets less and less, the further you move back.

So undoubtedly, some positions will be strengthened between April 24 and April 26, while others will remain more glaring weaknesses. Cornerback is one room where the Minnesota Vikings could use additional talent. Could it come at No. 24, where they are currently slotted in the first round?

Ben Solak (ESPN) doesn’t think that is the best route for the Vikings to go. Why? Well, it sounds like the NFL Draft analyst/insider might have some steam. Solak writes that the Vikings actually have two starting cornerbacks from last year’s team — Stephon Gilmore and Shaq Griffin — who are pretty much waiting in the free agency weeds, hoping that Kwesi and DC Brian Flores avoid drafting a cornerback at the top of the draft, so they can re-sign.

“I’d be more worried about the vacant snaps at cornerback left by Stephon Gilmore  and Shaquill Griffin if not for the fact that both remain unsigned. If the Vikings leave this draft with meager cornerback reinforcements, expect one or both to be re-signed.

Ben Solak – ESPN

Thus, with limited draft capital to work with, it doesn’t make much sense for the Minnesota Vikings to draft a position somewhere they can already find better, more proven talent — who can immediately slot and make your defense better. The Vikings have only one premium pick in this draft. After that, they don’t pick again until the 3rd round.

Stephon Gilmore, Shaq Griffin providing security for Vikings

Solak admits that “the Vikings’ roster is really, really good, so they don’t have any immediate needs to fill.” So more than likely, the Minnesota Vikings will go best player available. If that ends up being a cornerback, then it’s possible Griffin and/or Gilmore won’t want to come back. That’s why waiting makes sense for them.

Shaq Griffin and Stephon Gilmore both started for the Vikings in 2024, though Griffin was only used is sub packages with additional CBs. With Byron Murphy Jr. back and Isaiah Rodgers signed, they’ve already started to replace them. One more young talent could chase both away.

Related: MN Vikings Like Their Current Backup QB More Than Most Realize

Gilmore will be 35 years old but played in 15 games and had an interception with one pass defended. Griffin had a pair of picks and six passes defended. Griffin is younger at 30 years old this season, but he probably is the lesser player even with Gilmore’s age.

Stephon Gilmore could opt for retirement, if he doesn’t find a deal to his liking, but if he gets the role he wants in Minnesota, a return makes a ton of sense for both sides. We’ll see if the draft changes that, but it looks like it’ll have to be a big time CB talent who falls to them, if that’s the route they are going to go.

Final Minnesota Vikings Injury Report: Latest on Harrison Smith, Stephon Gilmore, Others https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/minnesota-vikings-news/final-injury-report-stephon-gilmore-harrison-smith-updates/ Fri, 20 Dec 2024 21:10:59 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=58410 On Sunday the Minnesota Vikings will take on the Seattle Seahawks in a game they need to win. If there is hope to chase down the top overall seed, then knocking off the 8-6 NFC West foe is a must. After a week of practice, the final injury report has dropped.

Unlike Mike Macdonald’s Seahawks, Kevin O’Connell’s Vikings look to be in relatively good shape. Minnesota has avoided serious injury complications for most of the year and that trend continues. The good news for Minnesota is that Stephon Gilmore does not carry an injury designation this week.

The 34-year-old CB has missed the last two weeks with a calf injury, but he’s ready to rock against whatever quarterback Seattle throws the Vikings’ way. The timing couldn’t be better, as Gilmore’s replacement the last couple weeks, Fabian Moreau, has been ruled out.

Final Minnesota Vikings injury report brings mixed news

Rookie Jalen Redmond, who’s been gaining more and more playing time in recent weeks, will join Moreau in street clothes Sunday, after suffering a concussion vs the Bears. Redmond has played in 11 of the Minnesota Vikings’ first 14 games this season. He’s recorded one sack, 15 tackles and 6 tackles for loss.

Veteran safety Harrison Smith has been on the injury report all week, but concern over his status for Sunday grew, when he went from a limited participant on Wednesday, to a DNP on Thursday. He has been given a questionable designation for Sunday, but head coach Kevin O’Connell sounded optimistic about his chances of suiting up.

Same can be said about the only other “Questionable” designation, C.J. Ham, who hasn’t been on the practice report all week, until he showed up Friday.

After coming on in relief of Gilmore against the Cardinals, Moreau played 53% and 46% of the defense snaps the past two weeks. Gilmore will gobble those all up once again, and rookie Dwight McGlothern will look to improve upon the ten defensive snaps he received against the Bears.

Related: Kirk Cousins is Ditching Atlanta… but When?

With Redmond out we could see the first game action for seventh round pick Levi Drake Rodriguez. We’ll see if he is made active, in Redmond’s place. What quarterback the Minnesota Vikings defense will see Sunday is no longer up in the air.

Seahawks lock in starters against Minnesota

Seattle Seahawks starting QB Geno Smith injured his knee, late against the Green Bay Packers in week 15. He was forced to leave the contest. But while Geno may not be 100%, he will be active.

That also goes for running back Kenneth Walker III, who has missed multiple games due to a calf injury. He teams up in the backfield with second-year runner, Zach Charbonnet. If there is concern over Smith’s health, and the Vikings’ interior offensive line without Redmond, we could see a lot of that Seattle running back tandem.

Minnesota Vikings Injury Report Gets Surprise Late Addition https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/minnesota-vikings-news/early-week-16-injury-report-vs-seahawks-dallas-turner-late-add/ Thu, 19 Dec 2024 03:15:37 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=58337 The first Minnesota Vikings injury report of week 16 dropped late Wednesday afternoon. Technically, it was more of a simulated report, since the Vikings only held a walkthrough today. Nonetheless, the list featured lots of veterans, which is no big surprise for an early week check in, this late in the season.

Early Week 16 Minnesota Vikings injury report

Brian O’Neill (knee), who left Sunday’s win vs the Chicago Bears for a short time before returning, was limited, along with, Harrison Phillips (knee), Harrison Smith (foot), Patrick Jones II (knee) and David Quessenberry (oblique). Stephon Gilmore and Josh Oliver were both listed as full participants, meaning we can expect to see Minnesota’s CB1 back on the field Sunday vs the Seattle Seahawks.

There were also two players listed as DNPs (Did Not Practice). 30-year-old cornerback Fabian Moreau — who has been filling in for Stephon Gilmore — and Jalen Redmond, who was pulled late Sunday vs the Bears and placed in concussion protocol.

Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell spoke with media on Tuesday, and told us that Brian O’Neill and Patrick Jones II are expected to play on Sunday vs Seattle. Still, it’s no surprise to see them listed on Wednesday’s Vikings injury report.

Related: What We Learned About the Minnesota Vikings in Convincing MNF Win Over Bears

It’s normal for the early week injury report to include a lot of players who might be banged up, but who will practice in full on Thursday and Friday. Still, it is always worth watching, because you never know. For example, a team might start adding players hours after their original injury report drops…

Dallas Turner added to Vikings injury report late

That’s what happened tonight, when the Minnesota Vikings added rookie 1st round pick Dallas Turner to the injury report as “limited” with a knee injury, the fourth such designation on the day. Apparently, someone just forgot to put him on the original…?

Turner receives his injury designation after one of the most productive weeks of his NFL career. On Sunday vs the Bears, the former Alabama star played 34 snaps on defense, where he posted a respectable 71.2 PFF grade, two pressures, and his 2nd sack of the season.

Related: Raiders Swipe Young Pass Rusher Off Minnesota Vikings Practice Squad

It wasn’t just the numbers, though. When Dallas Turner was on the field Monday, you knew about it because he was popping all of the screen, in good ways. He was running around and making plays, and he stuck out doing it. Hopefully, this weird late addition to the Vikings injury report isn’t anything we need to worry about…

Another win Monday night vs the floundering Chicago Bears improved the Vikings’ 2024 regular season record to 12-2 and allowed them to retake control of their own playoff destiny in the NFC.

They earned their week 15 victory without top cornerback Stephon Gilmore, and went a quarter or two without right tackle Brian O’Neill, who hurt his knee in the 2nd quarter. Punter Ryan Wright had to go through concussion protocol too, after being lit up during his final punt of the afternoon.

Thankfully, O’Neill gave an optimistic update on his injured right knee, immediately after the game. In more good news, Ryan Wright cleared his concussion tests and seems to be okay, going forward.

Kevin O’Connell gives Minnesota Vikings injury updates on Tuesday

On Tuesday afternoon, Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell met with media and gave injury updates on all of the players listed above, plus a few other updates, including one on Jalen Redmond and Pat Jones.

Related: No 12th Man? Vikings Open as Road Favorites vs Seahawks

O’Connell confirmed that, while right tackle Brian O’Neill is sore today, he is expected to play on Sunday vs the Seattle Seahawks. On top of that, KOC marked Stephon Gilmore as likely to play Sunday, as well.

Video courtesy of the Minnesota Vikings

“I want to update you guys on some injuries. Obviously, we had Brian [O’Neill] with the knee [injury] return to the game [Monday night]. He’s sore, but should be able to work through the week and I am expecting to have him available. Pat Jones was available to return the game, as well.

I had a couple guys, Fabian Moreau ended up coming in [today] with some hip soreness. So, we will see how he handles the week and kind of works through it. We are expecting Steph Gilmore working back in and potentially be back available this week.

And then, Jalen Redmond did get kind of identified by the independent [doctor], and was put into the concussion protocol, but did come in feeling really good today. So, he will go through that protocol throughout the week, and we hope to have him available, but that will be strictly a medical thing, as he works through that.”

Kevin O’Connell updates media on Minnesota Vikings injuries (Tuesday afternoon)

Brian O’Neill is okay | Stephon Gilmore to return? | No mention of Sam Darnold…

The first Minnesota Vikings injury report of the week will drop on Wednesday. It will be interesting to see if the names above are the only names listed tomorrow afternoon. Remember, Sam Darnold had a wrap of some sort around his right pinky, during the 2nd half vs the Bears.

We will see if he lands on the report tomorrow. But at least for now, there has been no mention of Sam’s pinky by media or anyone in the Minnesota Vikings organization, since the game vs Chicago ended on Monday night. So even if he does hit tomorrow’s report, I do not have any concern over whether or not he will play on Sunday vs the Seahawks.

Related: What We Learned About the Minnesota Vikings in Convincing MNF Win Over Bears

Instead, we got nothing but good news from the Vikings’ head coach this afternoon. Not only is Brian O’Neill going to be ok, but so is Pat Jones. On top of that, Stephon Gilmore is expected back as the CB1 of a secondary that had rookie QB Caleb Williams scrambling for options.

Minnesota has opened as a -3.5 point favorite in Seattle. As long as nothing changes dramatically in the next 24 hours, it sounds like Vikings’ injuries will play little part in moving that line, as the week goes on.

Stephon Gilmore Injury Update: Minnesota Vikings CB1 Could Play vs Bears https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/minnesota-vikings-news/week-15-final-injury-report-stephon-gilmore-injury-update/ Sat, 14 Dec 2024 21:40:34 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=58226 The Minnesota Vikings are -7 point favorites against the Chicago Bears on Monday night, with a chance to improve to 12-2 on the 2024 NFL season. To do that, they will have to slow No. 1 overall draft pick, Caleb Williams. No doubt, having their No. 1 cornerback, Stephon Gilmore, active and available would certainly help that cause.

Thankfully, two of Minnesota’s pass rushers, who were listed as “limited” on the Minnesota Vikings injury report, earlier this week — Andrew Van Ginkel and Pat Jones II — practiced in full Friday and Saturday. Even better, neither appeared on the final Vikings injury report for week 15, which just released Saturday afternoon.

Stephon Gilmore upgraded to “Questionable” on final week 15 Minnesota Vikings injury report

Want more good news from today’s Vikings injury report? In arguably the most positive injury development of this week, the Vikings listed their best cornerback, Stephon Gilmore, as “Questionable” on Saturday’s final week 15 injury report. This, after Gilmore appeared live on the practice field for the first time in weeks.

Since signing with Minnesota, just before the start of the 2024 season, the 34-year-old veteran CB has taken over as the defense’s CB1. That was until he suffered a hamstring injury a couple of weeks ago vs the Arizona Cardinals. He hasn’t practiced or played in a game since.

On the season, Stephon Gilmore has collected 47 tackles (32 solo), to go with his 1 interception and 7 passes defended. According to PFF, Gilmore is having one of the more difficult seasons of his 13-year NFL career. His 66.6 defensive grade and 62.7 coverage grade are both his lowest since 2020, the COVID season.

Related: 5 Stats from Chicago Bears Historic Losing Streak that Minnesota Vikings Fans Should Know

But Gilmore was getting better, as he got more comfortable with Brian Flores’ scheme. In weeks 12 (@ Bears) and 13 (vs Cardinals), right before he was injured, the veteran cornerback posted back to back defensive grades of 75.0 and 79.9, respectively.

Those overall grades — along with his 74.7 + 80.6 coverage grades in those same games — made for his best performances of the season, since week 1, according to PFF. No matter how well he is playing, compared to the standard the former DPOY has set for himself, he is the Vikings’ best option at CB1.

Gilmore should help stunt growth of Caleb Williams… at least for one week

Back to Chicago’s No. 1 overall QB, Caleb Williams, whose best performance of an up and down rookie season may have come in week 12, when he threw for 340 yards and 2 touchdowns on 32-of-47 (68%) passing vs the Vikings, when these two division rivals met for the first of two annual matchups this season.

How does Minnesota plan to slow Williams, and a Chicago offense loaded with passing weapons that just about every quarterback in the league envies, outside of Sam Darnold?

Stephon Gilmore - Minnesota Vikings defense vs Chicago Bears
Credit: Photo courtesy of the Minnesota Vikings

If he is healthy enough to be effective, adding Stephon Gilmore back into the secondary would be a big boost for a Minnesota Vikings defense that needs all of its weapons on the field, in order to keep the Chicago Bears offense down. The last thing they want to do is give this uber-talented group any confidence.

But most of all, the purple will have to apply controlled pressure to USC’s starchild, who is capable of very much capable of picking a defense apart from the pocket, if you let him. But the pass rush can’t be reckless. If gap assignments are irresponsibly blown, we’ve seen how effective Williams can be when he leaves the pocket, too.

Unfortunately, the Vikings did not clinch a playoff spot on Thursday Night Football, after the San Francisco 49ers failed to muster a touchdown vs the LA Rams.

Had the Niners won, Minnesota would already be officially in the 2024 NFL Playoffs. But that’s okay, because the Vikings hold their own playoff destiny this week. Beat the Bears on Monday night, and they clinch a spot. A healthy roster would help. And on Friday, we got some good news in that department.

Minnesota Vikings injury report looking better as week 15 rolls along

After they held some guys out of a fully-padded practice on Wednesday, the Minnesota Vikings had three players “limited” in action, on Thursday’s Vikings injury report — EDGE Andrew Van Ginkel (Hip), EDGE Pat Jones (Knee) and RB Aaron Jones (Back). Stephon Gilmore has been the lone “DNP” all week, and that did not change on Friday.

If the Minnesota Vikings want to continue their march toward being legitimate Super Bowl contenders, they need to use Monday Night Football as a national stage to broadcast their greatness to an NFL world that much of which still does not see them as a real championship threat in the NFC.

That’s why it is crucial, especially if Stephon Gilmore misses another week, that pass rushers like Andrew Van Ginkel and Pat Jones are available to wreak havoc on rookie QB Caleb Williams and a Bears offense that is struggling mightily to garner any sort of confidence.

As of Friday afternoon, it appears both guys, who combined for 16 sacks on the season, will both be on the field at U.S. Bank Stadium, where the Minnesota Vikings are currently more than a touchdown favorite vs the Chicago Bears.

They’ve all but officially locked themselves into one of the seven playoff spots available in the NFC, and sit just one game behind the Detroit Lions for first place in the NFC North, which looks like it could come with a No. 1 seed and first round bye, come January.

To accomplish their 2024 dreams, the Vikings will have to stay healthy, something that has not been a given, so far this season. They’ve already lost LT Christian Darrisaw and 1st round QB, JJ McCarthy, to season-ending injuries.

The Vikings also spent chunks of the first 13 weeks of the NFL season without WR Jordan Addison and inside linebacker Blake Cashman. More recently, rookie phenom kicker Will Reichard, Pro Bowl long-snapper Andrew DePoala and 2023 UDFA-turned starter Ivan Pace Jr were all placed on injured reserve.

Minnesota Vikings injury updates: Kevin O’Connell gives latest on Stephon Gilmore injured hamstring

So, when head coach Kevin O’Connell took to the podium at TCO Performance Center on Monday, to recap Sunday’s latest win over the Arizona Cardinals and preview the upcoming week of practice, as the Minnesota Vikings prepare for a week 14 matchup vs the Atlanta Falcons, there was a quiet nervousness among the fanbase regarding top cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

The 34-year-old veteran cornerback left Sunday’s game vs the Cards with a hamstring injury, and never returned. That’s why we saw Kyler Murray & Co constantly picking on Gilmore’s replacement Fabian Moreau.

KOC tried to remain cautiously optimistic, regarding Gilmore’s status this week at practice, and for Sunday afternoon’s matchup. Minnesota’s head coach described the injury as a “low-grade” hamstring injury, but most of the verbiage he used was a bit concerning. “I’m not ready to rule [Gilmore] out for Sunday, just yet.”

“[Stephon Gilmore] did get a low-grade kind of hamstring [injury] that caused him to not return. Still getting some evaluations on what that looks like. I do not believe it is a longer term injury, and I’m not quite ready to rule him out for this week. I want to see how he kinda feels, as we work through it.”

Kevin O’Connell on Stephon Gilmore’s status for week 14

If Gilmore can’t go, KOC didn’t rule out the possibility of the Vikings picking up a cornerback, but did note that he doesn’t see this injury as injured reserve-worthy. Should the veteran CB not be able to go, O’Connell expressed confidence in Fabian Moreau, and rookie Dwight McGlothern, who is currently on the practice squad.

Will Reichard, Andrew DePoala returning to Vikings practice

While the update on Gilmore may be optimistic, at best, there was some better news surrounding other Minnesota Vikings players who have been dealing with injuries. O’Connell announced that both Will Reichard and Andrew DePoala are both having their 21-day practice windows opened.

Related: Kevin O’Connell Coach of the Year Odds are Confusing…

That means both guys will be back at Vikings practice this week. They are also eligible to be removed from injured reserve, at any time, including this week, prior to Sunday’s game vs the Falcons.

“Will Reichard and Andrew DePoala will have their [21-day practice] windows opened up. Get them some work together. Not only Will getting swings, but DePo and [holder Ryan Wright] working back together again, and see where those guys are at.”

Kevin O’Connell on opening Will Reichard and Andrew DePoala practice windows

Replacement kicker, John Parker Romo, has performed admirably, in Reichard’s absence, and has probably earned himself a starting job in the NFL, but it won’t be with the Vikings, who invested a 6th round pick on the Alabama phenom, during the 2024 NFL Draft.

Josh Oliver back to mostly full health

Lastly, more good news. KOC also noted that Josh Oliver is feeling healthy again, and is expected to have “a somewhat normal practice this week”, and be active again on Sunday. He missed week 13’s matchup vs the Cards with a wrist injury.

Most notably, after Kirk Cousins taking his talents to Atlanta, was on the defensive side of the football, after Danielle Hunter followed Kirk south… just a bit further west, landing with the Houston Texans.

Stephon Gilmore, other new Minnesota Vikings thriving

Meanwhile, the Vikings aren’t really missing either player. Sam Darnold has proven himself a very capable quarterback, thus far. On defense, Andrew Van Ginkel and Jonathan Greenard have mostly allowed fans to forget about Hunter and the 16.5 sacks he piled up last season.

The defense, as a whole, has struggled in two straight losses. But for the most part, Brian Flores’ squad has been no worse for the wear, even after swapping out more than a handful of starters during the offseason. One of the most unsung heroes, especially in the first five games of the season, is cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

Back when the Minnesota Vikings were flirting with Stephon Gilmore this offseason, the hope was that the 34-year-old veteran could stabilize a secondary that lacked a high-end outside cover guy who was battle tested. Prior to riding the struggle bus vs Detroit and LA, Gilmore was all that he had been cracked up to be, and more. ESPN’s Aaron Schatz highlighted just how good that signing has been.

Gilmore has started all seven games and played 86% of the snaps for the Minnesota defense, which leads the league in my DVOA ratings. The raw coverage stats are pretty average for Gilmore, who has one interception this season. He has allowed a lot of shorter completions and finally gave up his first touchdown against the Rams in Week 8, a 7-yard score for Cooper Kupp. However, Gilmore’s coverage DVOA is near the top of the league because of adjustments for who he has had to cover… The Vikings are glad to have Gilmore, who is a key player on their elite defense, to cover some of the best receivers in the game.

Aaron Schatz on Stephon Gilmore (ESPN)

Schatz listed the wide receivers Gilmore had to cover, through the first seven games of the season: Malik Nabers Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Garrett Wilson, Puka Nacua, and Cooper Kupp have given Gilmore everything he can handle, and more. He may be getting worn down, too. His PFF grades vs LA hit a brutal season low (44.7 DEF, 45.0 COV)

On Sunday, Gilmore gets a bit of a softer landing spot vs Joe Flacco and the Indianapolis Colts. Neither Josh Downs or Michael Pittman Jr are Puka Nakua or Cooper Kupp. Still, this is the NFL, where you don’t get a week off.

Despite having performed well thus far though, it will always remain a week-by-week thing with Gilmore. He’s 34 years old, and the point in which his body doesn’t allow him to maintain this level may take place at any moment.

Danielle Hunter enjoying life after Vikings

Cousins may have gotten the substantial payday, but Hunter did ok for himself too. And on the football field, Hunter picked up right where he left off with the Minnesota Vikings. At 5.5 sacks Hunter is 12th in the NFL in sacks, after Thursday night’s game.

“Houston ranks second in pass rush win rate (51.6%) and third in the NFL with 27 sacks. It also has the league’s fourth-best defensive DVOA when the defense brings pressure on the quarterback. According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Hunter leads the NFL in pass pressures at 51, seven more than any other defender. He also has 5.5 sacks and seven tackles for loss.”

Schatz on Danielle Hunter (ESPN)

It’s tough to compete as an edge rusher when you don’t have a teammate worthy of attention themselves. That makes what Hunter did last season that much more impressive, given the non-existence of Marcus Davenport. But together with Will Anderson in Houston, the Texans have been wreaking serious havoc in opponents backfields.

It wasn’t as thought the Vikings weren’t interested in Hunter’s services. He had an injury history though, is aging, and was going to command a premium payday. With the way it worked out, it has been a win for both parties.

Biggest Minnesota Vikings Winners and Losers Thru Week 5: Who Sticks Out So Far? https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/minnesota-vikings-games/2024-vikings-winners-losers-thru-week-5/ Mon, 07 Oct 2024 19:57:49 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=55851 The Minnesota Vikings are exactly where all the experts predicted they’d be after Week 5, undefeated at 5-0. Not really, no one gave the Vikings a chance. It’s why their over/under preseason win total was set at 6.5 wins. Well, they’re just two more wins away from smashing past expectations, yet the Vikings still have 12 more games left on their schedule.

It’s clear the arrow is pointed straight up right now, but who has improved their stock the most through five weeks? Better yet, which Vikings have lowered their stock the most? Below, we dive into the 13 biggest winners and losers through five weeks of play.

Winner: Sam Darnold

Prior to the Vikings’ Week 5 win, Darnold was looking like an early MVP candidate. His stats no longer have him leading the NFL in passing yards, but he still ranks second, and the rest of his numbers are still respectable.

Even if Darnold’s stats aren’t as gaudy as they once were, he’s still 5-0. As long as the Vikings keep winning, he’ll stay in the MVP conversation, but expecting him to win over other heavyweights like Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, or Patrick Mahomes is wishful thinking.

Still, he’s put himself in position to earn a massive payday from another team at the end of the season, and he’ll always have a special place in the Vikings’ hearts for taking a chance on him. After all, there’s no doubt the Vikings wouldn’t be on top of the NFC North without the former first-round pick.

Loser: Ty Chandler

Entering the season, speculation pointed to Chandler nearly splitting rushing opportunities with Aaron Jones. Those reports couldn’t have been more wrong. We’ll get to Jones in a second, but this space is specially reserved for the Vikings’ backup running back.

Chandler has flashed moments of greatness. On Sunday, he had a 32-yard rush called back due to an illegal formation that had nothing to do with him. Otherwise? He’s been fairly ineffective rushing behind the same line Jones is thriving behind.

He’s carried the ball 42 times for 147 yards and zero touchdowns. That equates to just a 3.5 YPC average. For a point of reference, that’s worse than the 3.9 YPC Alexander Mattison averaged last season. In other words, Chandler just hasn’t gotten the job done.

Winner: Aaron Jones

Chandler hasn’t lived up to the coaching staff’s expectations, but Jones definitely has. It’s clear the Vikings got a bargain by signing the former Packers Pro Bowl rusher to a one-year, $7 million contract. In fact, it might be time to see if he’s interested in a short-term extension.

When healthy, Jones has helped power an offense that ranks sixth in scoring this season. He’s done so while averaging a robust 4.9 YPC, racking up 350 yards and a rushing touchdown on 71 carries. Darnold has also learned to rely on him as a pass-catcher, where the 30-year-old has tacked on an additional 167 receiving yards and a TD catch on 17 receptions.

As great as some of the other free agency signings have been, a strong case can be made that Jones has been the single greatest addition to the Vikings’ roster this offseason. Yet, there are plenty of other contenders who can claim that title too.

Loser: Ed Ingram

You already know the story. The Vikings selected Ed Ingram with the 59th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He was selected ahead of several players who have since become Pro Bowlers such as James Cook (Dalvin’s brother), Riq Woolen, and Brock Purdy.

Sure, he’s been a constant fixture in the starting lineup for all 37 games of his career. The issue is he grades very poorly in pass protection. This year he has a 29.4 grade per Pro Football Focus for his pass blocking. He’s lightyears ahead as a run blocker, with a still below-average grade of 62.2. Add it all up, and Ingram ranks 61st among 70 guards graded by PFF this season. In other words, he’s replaceable.

Winner: Patrick Jones II

Feeling like they needed more pass-rushers, the Vikings traded up to select Dallas Turner in the first round of April’s draft. Yet, if Brian Flores knew how much production he’d get from Patrick Jones II as he enters a contract year, maybe Turner would have never been selected.

Obviously Turner is still the future at the position, but Jones has performed very well in a rotational role. It’s been just five games, but he’s already up to a career-high five sacks this season. That’s included back-to-back two-sack performances to start the season after cooling off as of late.

Still, for a 26-year-old in a career year, Jones is setting himself up for a nice payday in free agency, and it probably won’t come from the Vikings with them already invested in Jonathan Greenard, Andrew Van Ginkel, and Turner.

Loser: Dallas Turner

Have you seen Dallas Turner? To be fair, the 17th overall pick was one of the youngest players selected in the 2024 NFL Draft, at just 21 years old. The Vikings didn’t add him to the roster and expect Turner to be the team’s defensive MVP as a rookie.

Turner did miss a game with an injury, and he’s played just 78 defensive snaps, or 27% of the team’s plays when he’s healthy. But let’s not even think about placing a bust label on this sack artist yet. He did record a sack in his NFL debut, and even blew up a play in Sunday’s win over the Jets.

Yet, for those who expected Turner to compete for the Defensive Rookie of the Year award have to be a bit disappointed so far. But Turner’s slow start is due to no fault of his own, it’s simply due to how well his teammates ahead of him on the depth chart are playing.

Winner: Andrew Van Ginkel

Admit it, when Andrew Van Ginkel signed, many Vikings fans asked, “Who?” It hasn’t taken the Iowa native long to make an impression. In fact, he’s made a case to be the Vikings’ defensive MVP thus far. Some NFL experts are even asking themselves whether AVG is the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year right now.

Van Ginkel has an elite 90.8 coverage grade via PFF through five weeks (best mark among edge rushers). Which is crazy, considering his primary job is to rush the passer.

But his unique skillset is exactly what the Vikings were attracted to. When quarterbacks line up at the line of scrimmage, they have absolutely no clue whether Van Ginkel is about to drop back in coverage or rush full speed at their feet. It’s working to perfection.

Loser: Levi Drake Rodriguez

Let’s not be too harsh here. Levi Drake Rodriguez was always considered a longshot prospect from the very moment he arrived with the Vikings as the 232nd pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Many seventh-round picks like him don’t even make the team.

Yet, LDR snuck onto the roster thanks to a non-stop motor plus a lack of defensive line depth in Minnesota. However, we’ve seen fellow undrafted rookie Taki Taimani active for all five games, and Rodriguez has been a healthy scratch in all five.

But this means nothing in the grand scheme. Odds are, the Vikings are still very high on the 24-year-old prospect, he may just need a bit more seasoning before the coaching staff feels they can trust him in a live game.

Winner: Stephon Gilmore

When the Vikings were sniffing around Stephon Gilmore, many fans said, “Don’t bother.” This was partially because he was still unsigned. If 31 other teams don’t want him, why should the Vikings? It likely didn’t help that Gilmore is also 34 years old.

The haters couldn’t have been more wrong. Gilmore has assumed the No. 1 cornerback job from the moment he put on pads, and the Vikings’ defense has never looked back. So far, through five games, Minnesota’s pass defense is one of the best in the NFL, allowing the sixth-fewest yards per attempt, and having the most interceptions.

Gilmore’s superpowers were on full display in the Vikings’ Week 5 win over the Jets, where the former DPOY winner leaped in front of an errant Aaron Rodgers pass to clinch yet another victory for the fellas in purple. Gilmore’s been a breath of fresh air for a secondary that had more questions than answers before the season kicked off.

Loser: Byron Murphy Jr.

No cornerback has been targeted more than Byron Murphy Jr through five weeks. Quarterbacks have thrown his way 48 times. He’s allowed a catch on 35 of those opportunities. Thus, no other player has allowed more yards in coverage than Murphy, who’s allowed 405 yards, and two touchdowns.

Murphy has recorded an interception, but he’s also missed more tackles than any other cornerback (tied with former Viking Mike Hughes at 9). This has led to pass-catchers picking up an additional 144 yards after catch.

Among corners who have played at least 50% of their team’s snaps, Murphy grades 50th overall, which suggests he’s been no better than average. Yet, with the 26-year-old in a contract year, it’s possible the Vikings try replacing him during the offseason. Then again, he’s still young, so maybe learning from Pro Bowl corners like Gilmore and Shaq Griffin can help Murphy learn a thing or two too.

Winner: Cam Bynum

Another Vikings defender setting himself up to cash in during free agency is Camryn Bynum. He’s in the final year of his rookie deal, but is tied for the team lead with two interceptions. He’s also just nine tackles behind Blake Cashman for the team lead, showing his versatility in coverage and in run support.

Once Harrison Smith says his farewell, the Vikings will still be in good hands, knowing Bynum and Josh Metellus will maintain some level of consistency in Minnesota’s secondary. But for now, Bynum’s showing he’s not only one of the best defenders on the team, but possibly even good enough to earn the first Pro Bowl nod of his career. Plus, his celebration game is immaculate.

Loser: Akayleb Evans

Before the season kicked off, Akayleb Evans was being looked at as a potential starting cornerback. Yet, after adding Gilmore and Griffin, the 2022 fourth-round pick has completely fallen out of favor. Instead of playing valuable snaps on defense, the Vikings have stuffed Evans into a special teams role, where he gave everyone multiple scares against the Jets.

First, Evans collided with punt returner Brandon Powell, which could have led to a fumble and/or a change of possession. Of course, the replay showed Evans got pushed into Powell, so there wasn’t an issue, but unless he starts thriving in his new role, the 25-year-old’s long-term future in Minnesota could be in serious doubt.

Winner: Brian Flores

Is there really a bigger winner than Brian Flores? The second-year Vikings defensive coordinator somehow didn’t receive a single head coaching interview last season. His lawsuit against the NFL may have something to do with the non-interest.

Yet, at some point, if you’re a team making a new hire, how can you not reconsider Flores to lead your organization? There have been nothing but positive reports about the coach since he arrived in Minnesota, and his defenses are causing fits for every quarterback it takes on.

The Vikings went from allowing 21.3 points per game in 2023 to just 15.2 in 2024, where they currently allow the fourth-fewest points in the league. Allowing the second-fewest yards per rush (3.6) has certainly played a key factor, but the Vikings aren’t just geared to stop the run, they also have recorded the second-most sacks in the NFL. Brian Flores, you are a hero.

Loser: Brandon Powell

When the Vikings are 5-0, it’s hard to find someone to pick on. But we couldn’t make a list full of winners, because there’s some darkness in this world too.

Brandon Powell gets a bad rap here, but it’s not because he’s been this horrible player or anything. He hasn’t gotten many opportunities since losing the third WR role to Jalen Nailor, but he has maintained his job as the team’s leading returner.

Yet, there just haven’t been many chances for him to thrive yet thus far. He’s only taken seven punt returns, where he’s gained 36 yards. That ranks second-worst in the NFL in yards per return, albeit in a very small sample size. At least he’s not muffing punts!
