How did the Minnesota Timberwolves start?

After the Los Angeles Lakers left Minnesota in 1960, Marv Wolfenson and Harvey Ratner made it their mission to bring professional basketball back to the state in 1987. The two original owners tried to sell the faltering team in 1994 to move to New Orleans. However, that same year, local tycoon Glen Taylor purchased the squad. The WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx would become his part-own just five years later. The team’s losing streak was interrupted in 1995 when a high school senior named Kevin Garnett was selected in the draft.

Several talented players, such as Stephon Marbury and Tom Gugliotta, were added to the team’s roster as the season progressed. In 1996, with Marbury, Gugliotta, and Garnett at the helm, the Timberwolves went 40-42 and made the playoffs for the first time in their history. Garnett’s style of play eventually led to the Timberwolves’ surprise success, as he averaged 23 points per game.

The Minnesota Timberwolves Logo

The Minnesota Timberwolves have used four different logos throughout their existence.

• From 1990 to 1995, the team had a blue and white wolf logo inside a gray and blue basketball. Below the basketball logo, the words “Minnesota Timberwolves” were written in black.
• A new, improved logo was used for the 1997 season. The full team’s name, “Timberwolves,” was inscribed below the silhouetted wolf in a sinister typeface.
• In 2009, the logo saw just minimal revisions. A more legible front was employed, and the wolf and woodland seemed more up-to-date and digital.
• The 2017 Timberwolves logo resembles the first one. The design is primarily dark blue, with a basketball-centered wolf howling toward the North Star.

Development of Young Players

A critical factor in the Timberwolves’ success is hinged on the increasing development of younger players. Karl-Anthony Towns has already established who he is in the league. Rudy Gobert is who he is too. But younger players such as Jaden McDaniels and, especially, Anthony Edwards will dictate how good the Timberwolves are in the immediate future.

Edwards has shown all of the potential needed to be a superstar, since splashing onto the NBA scene for the 2020/2021 season. He took yet another step forward in 2022-23. Next season, it’s time for him to completely take over as option #1.

Karl-Anthony Towns has faced several injuries in the past few seasons, making him miss some important games for the Timberwolves. During this period, the team struggled, facing more formidable opposition. Furthermore, Naz Reid and Jaden McDaniels both missed the Wolves’ playoff series vs the Nuggets because of injuries.
