MSHSL Approves Shot Clock for Boys and Girls Basketball

It has finally happened. High School basketball in Minnesota will be a better product starting in 2023-24. By then, every gymnasium across the state must install and use 35-second shot clocks for both girls and boys Varsity basketball teams. This, after the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) voted unanimously on the rule change late Thursday morning.

The motion is approved–> Minnesota high schools will implement the 35 second shot clock in varsity girls and boys basketball beginning in the 2023 season.

Since its adoption as an official sport in the early 1900’s, high school basketball in the state of Minnesota has gone without a time limit on offense. But starting in late fall of 2023, those days will be over.

The change will be required for Varsity teams only but will be mandated at all class levels. The shot clocks must be mounted to the basketball hoops. Lower levels (JV and below) are allowed to use the new clocks if agreed upon by both sides. Costs to make the changes and install shot clocks will be on the schools.
