On Monday, Kevin O’Connell stood in front of the microphone at TCO Performance Center for a press conference that, for once, wasn’t riddled with new injuries to comb through.

Minnesota is on a bye this week and that will help the roster to get healthier, too. And they need all the help they can get, especially on the offensive line, which was in shambles against the Cleveland Browns.

The Vikings offensive line was in such rough shape heading into their matchup against the Browns that they signed something called Matt Waletzko and flew him to London just so they had enough offensive linemen to hold a full practice.

Two depth talents waived by Minnesota Vikings

But with the team slowly getting healthier, they were forced to make some moves on Monday, choosing to waive depth tight end Nick Vannett and guard Vershon Lee.

Minnesota grabbed ten-year veteran Nick Vannett as tight end depth early on this season. With T.J. Hockenson and Josh Oliver active and Ben Yurosek getting healthier, there was no need for Vannett.

Rookie Gavin Bartholomew suffered a season-ending injury in the preseason, and remains on IR. Vannett played in three games for Minnesota, but only saw four snaps on offense. He logged 20 snaps on special teams.

Other offensive line notes and thoughts

After going undrafted, Vershon Lee signed as a free agent with the Vikings. He was elevated from the practice squad for the first time on Sunday against the Browns. He logged just four snaps as a guard on special teams.

Let’s be real. If you couldn’t crack the offensive line rotation last week… then it’s probably never happening. It’s also notable that Lee was sent packing, as opposed to Waletzko, who just joined the team this week.

Donovan Jackson is expected to be back for Week 7. Michael Jurgens is returning to practice, too, but there has been some question over whether Brandel is a better option at center, until Ryan Kelly returns (if he does).

Minnesota returns to action in Week 7 against the Philadelphia Eagles at home. There will be no Love boat reincarnation during the time off, and it’s probably good Jordan Addison is sticking around the facility too.

Minnesota Vikings Sign New O-Lineman, Cut Safety https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/news-vershon-lee-signing-bubba-bolden-released/ Fri, 13 Jun 2025 20:17:17 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=63882 This week was a busy one for the Minnesota Vikings, who held mandatory minicamp practices at TCO Performance Center in Eagan Tuesday-Thursday, giving Kevin O’Connell one of his first chances to watch most of the 2025 Vikings practice together this summer.

With plenty of free agent and rookie additions made over the past few months, the roster as it currently sits, will be the MN Vikings as we know them next season. Of course, there will be a ton of moving and shaking happening around the edges of the depth chart between now and then too.

Minnesota Vikings sign OL Vershon Lee

Vershon Lee played 51 games (40 starts) over five seasons at South Carolina, before going undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft. Nonetheless, he got a tryout with the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday and clearly impressed those in attendance. Friday afternoon, he was signed, taking safety Bubba Bolden’s spot on the roster.

It remains to be seen where Lee will factor into the Minnesota Vikings OL plans, but they obviously liked what they saw from him on Thursday. Heading into training camp, the offensive front will feature three new starters this season.

Will Fries and Donovan Jackson take over at the guard spots while Ryan Kelly is stepping in as the Vikings new center. Blake Brandel and Walter Rouse are the likely backups as bookends which means Lee — who wore No. 53 in college for the Gamecocks — will be competing with a group more focused on adding to the interior.

What was your favorite Bubba Bolden + Vikings moment

It wasn’t that long ago that Bubba Bolden became the very first free agent signed by the purple, back in March, when the free agency bell first rang. Now, he’s out. The safety position will be one to watch this year for Brian Flores’ defense.

Cam Bynum took his talents to Indianapolis, and Minnesota promoted Theo Jackson to the starting lineup. With Harrison Smith and Josh Metellus back, Bubba Bolden’s depth must’ve been deemed unnecessary, after watching him workout this spring.

The Minnesota Vikings kick off their preseason schedule on August 9th with a home game against the Houston Texans. They host the New England Patriots the following week and will have joint practices with Mike Vrabel’s squad.
