The Minnesota Timberwolves had already extended key bigs, Naz Reid and Julius Randle over the weekend, which ultimately lead to Luka Garza and Josh Minott being cut loose.

Minnesota Timberwolves send NAW to Atlanta for payday

On Monday, the Wolves started the day by re-upping for one more year of player/unofficial bench coach, Joe Ingles. Then, later in the evening, it news broke that the Timberwolves had traded Nickeil Alexander-Walker to the Atlanta Hawks in a sign and trade that netted them a 2nd round pick and a future trade exception.

Nickeil Alexander-Walker played the 2024-25 season on one of the most team-friendly contracts in the NBA. In his second full season with the Minnesota Timberwolves NAW became a rotation fixture and one of the most under-the-radar stars in the game. Now he gets his payday.

For some time, it’s been assumed that he would sign elsewhere this offseason, given Minnesota’s current financial situation. His market was going to be robust, so the Timberwolves took advantage by trading him before he hit the open market.

Timberwolves hamstrung by 2nd Apron

From here, president of basketball operations Tim Connelly is expected to sit back for the majority of the offseason. The Minnesota Timberwolves 2025-26 salary number now sits at $204.3 million, according to Spotrac.

That leaves them just $3.5 million short of the 2nd apron luxury tax threshold, of $207.8 million. The Wolves must stay below that number or face massive penalties, both financial and from a roster-building standpoint.

The Timberwolves orchestrated a sign-and-trade with Alexander-Walker to facilitate his new deal with Atlanta. They did pick up a second round pick and some cash in the swap.

The four-year $62 million payday was substantially more than Minnesota would have been able to offer him. Last season NAW made $4.3 million in the second year of a two-year $9 million extension he signed with the Timberwolves.

NAW played all 82 games for Minnesota this season. It was the second-straight year he had accomplished that feat. He also made 10 starts for Chris Finch. In 2024-25 NAW averaged 9.4 points per game on 43.8% shooting.

He now heads to an Atlanta team with Trae Young at the helm. It should be expected that Alexander-Walker will be given a bit more freedom in the rotation even after averaging 25.3 minutes per game with the Minnesota Timberwolves this past year.

More former Wolves find new homes

It wasn’t just NAW that was on the move Monday night. Monday night’s pre-free agency frenzy saw multiple former Minnesota Timberwolves sign on the dotted line with other teams around the league.

It didn’t take long for Luka Garza to find a new home, after the Wolves declined his player option for the upcoming season. Last night, the former Iowa Hawkeye superstar agreed to terms with the Boston Celtics on a two-year deal worth $5.5 million guaranteed.

It has been a while since Tyus Jones played for the Timberwolves. However, the “one of us” guard could have potentially been an option to fill the playmaker role Minnesota needs this summer. In theory, a reunion made sense.

Unfortunately, that won’t happen. Instead, he will join another fellow Twin Cities native, Jalen Suggs, in Orlando, after he and the Magic agreed to terms on a new deal. Speaking of “keeping up with the Jones'”, Tyus’ little brother Tre Jones is staying in Chicago, after he signed a three-year contract for $24 million.

The memories of D’Angelo Russell, around these parts, aren’t all that positive. Since being traded away, the former Minnesota Timberwolves point guard has bounced around between Los Angeles and Brooklyn.

Now, he is joining the Dallas Mavericks, where he’ll team up with Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis and top pick Cooper Flagg on what appears to be an immediate title contender a future title contender

3 New Names Linked To Minnesota Timberwolves Ahead of NBA Trade Deadline https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/minnesota-timberwolves-trade-deadline-tre-jones-dennis-schroder-dennis-smith-jr/ Tue, 06 Feb 2024 21:09:24 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=47581 We are less than 48 hours away from the NBA trade deadline (Thursday at 2 p.m. CST), and the Minnesota Timberwolves are poised to strike. Numerous names have already been linked to the Wolves (we have a running list) and on Tuesday, three more players emerged.

New NBA Trade Deadline Targets – Minnesota Timberwolves

Three fresh names, Tre Jones (Spurs), Dennis Schröder (Raptors), and Dennis Smith Jr. (Nets), have surfaced as potential targets linked to the Timberwolves, according to a report that dropped Tuesday via insider Jon Krawczynski (The Athletic).

Tre Jones – San Antonio Spurs

Minnesota Timberwolves Trade Target Tre Jones
Scott Wachter-USA TODAY Sports

Tre Jones — younger brother of Tyus Jones, who has been the subject of numerous Wolves trade reports recently (some more true than others) — has showcased talent that plays in the NBA and potential that he could eventually be much more than that.

With three years separating Tre and Tyus (both graduated from Apple Valley HS and attended Duke), Tre still has plenty of time to further develop his skills. This season for the San Antonio Spurs, Tre Jones is playing 26 minutes per game, averaging 9.7 points, 5.8 assists, and 3.2 rebounds.

“Jones’ brother, Tre, could be another possibility with the San Antonio Spurs nowhere close to competing this season.”

Dennis Schröder – Toronto Raptors

Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports

Dennis Schröder has established a solid reputation in the NBA, having played for several teams including the Hawks, Thunder, Lakers, Celtics, before crossing the northern border to join the Toronto Raptors, where he’s averaging slightly over 30 minutes per game in 2023-24 and contributing 13.6 points, 6.2 assists, and 2.7 rebounds per game for the Raptors.

“Toronto’s Dennis Schröder and Kyle Lowry, who was recently traded from Miami to Charlotte, and likely will be moving on via trade or buyout are two other names on the radar. Finch coached Lowry for half of a season in Toronto…”

Jon Krawczynski – The Athletic

Dennis Smith Jr. – Brooklyn Nets

Minnesota Timberwolves Trade Target Dennis Smith Jr
Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

Dennis Smith Jr., another point guard with experience across multiple NBA teams, including stints with the Mavericks, Knicks, Trail Blazers, Pistons, Hornets, and Nets. In his rookie season back in 2017, he started every game for the Dallas Mavericks. Since then, he has primarily served as a role player.

This season with the Brooklyn Nets, he’s averaging 7.3 points, 4 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game in just under 20 minutes per game. No doubt, Smith Jr would be an upgrade over Jordan McLaughin, which is ultimately what president of basketball operations Tim Connelly is searching for.

“Dennis Smith Jr. in Brooklyn is another combo guard that could fit what they need, while the Nets’ Royce O’Neale would give them another wing defender who has experience playing with Rudy Gobert.”

Plenty of Minnesota in The Athletic’s Latest NBA Mock Draft https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/plenty-of-minnesota-in-the-athletics-latest-nba-mock-draft/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/plenty-of-minnesota-in-the-athletics-latest-nba-mock-draft/#respond Sat, 18 Jul 2020 16:03:54 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=27270

To most people, Minnesota is known as the State of Hockey. Since 2006, the state has annually hosted Hockey Day Minnesota to showcase talent throughout the state. Current NHL players like Zach Parise, T.J Oshie and Ryan McDonagh + a bunch more all hail from the Land of 10,000 Lakes. However, Minnesota is oh-so-subtly becoming the State of Basketball, the latest example of this being the 2020 NBA Draft.

The NBA Draft and Lottery are still a ways away, thanks to COVID-19. The draft is set to take place on October 16th (lottery: August 25). The Athletic released their sixth 2020 NBA Mock Draft, earlier this week. As you might have guessed when you opened this blog, Minnesota could play a major role in that first round.

NameSelection #TeamCollegeAgeHeight & Position
Tre Jones23Miami HeatDuke20 years old; sophomore6-2 guard
Zeke Nnaji24Utah JazzArizona19 years old; freshman6-10 forward/center
Daniel Oturu28Toronto RaptorsMinnesota20 years old; sophomore6-10 center
Tyrell Terry30Boston Celtics (via MIL)Stanford19 years old; freshman6-1 guard

The Athletic projects that four Minnesota natives will hear their names called on draft night, all of them slated to go in the first round: Tre Jones (Apple Valley), Zeke Nnaji (Hopkins), Daniel Oturu (Cretin-Derham Hall) and Tyrell Terry (DeLaSalle).

Tre Jones

After playing two years for Mike Krzyzewski at Duke, it’s no surprise to see Jones on this mock draft. The Apple Valley native averaged 16.2 points, 6.4 assists and 4.2 rebounds while shooting 42.3% from the field and 36.1% from deep.

The younger brother of NBA PG, Tyus Jones, Tre led Duke to a 25-6 record this past season and was named the 2019-20 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and 2019-20 ACC Player of the Year. According to experts, some of Tre’s strengths are his defense and basketball IQ, but you don’t have to read it to believe it; just look at the clip below.

“He made things happen on both ends of the floor and set a tone for Duke. Ultimately, the big question is about his jump shot. He hit 36 percent of his 3-pointers, but most of those came directly off the catch and that number is the result of a hot shooting final seven games.”

“[Drafting Tre in the 1st round] requires you to trust that his improvement as a shooter off the catch is real, and teams aren’t totally convinced yet. One thing going in his favor is that he is considered a super high character kid that will work to rep out jumpers until he gets it right.”

Sam Vacenie – The Athletic

Zeke Nnaji

First, let’s just get this out of the way: Zeke Nnaji would be a great fit for the Jazz in more than one way. Second, Zeke Nnaji is really good at basketball. The former Hopkins star averaged 16.1 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks while shooting 57% from the field this past season at Arizona. He put up those numbers while playing with fellow highly-touted prospects in Josh Green and Nico Mannion).

Nnaji was not only named to the 2019-20 All-Pac 12 Freshman Team, but he was also named to the 2019-20 All-Pac 12 First Team and was the 2019-20 Pac-12 Rookie of the Year. That’s not bad for a guy who is just as good a musician. While his 3-point percentage wasn’t the best — he only shot 29.4% from deep — Nnaji seems to be working on that everyday (as shown below). Additionally, Darren Wolfson recently reported that Nnaji is set to meet with the Timberwolves next week.

“The Minnesota native isn’t a particularly great defender right now, but he has good lateral quickness and should be someone who can slide with opposing guards on the perimeter and not be a liability. He also has tremendous touch around the basket and great body control mixed with underrated physical strength.”

“Getting guys who are 6-foot-11 who has potential to shoot it and defend on the perimeter while constantly playing with a high-level motor is super valuable. I don’t know that Nnaji will ever be a star, but I feel confident he’ll likely stick around for a while.”

Sam Vacenie – The Athletic

Daniel Oturu

Vacenie thinks Daniel Oturu was better in college than he will be in the NBA. This past season, Oturu absolutely dominated, putting up gaudy stats of over 20 points and 11 rebounds per game, this past season for the Gophers.

During a five game stretch in January where the Gophers played Purdue, Northwestern, Michigan State, Michigan and Penn State; Oturu averaged 25.2 points and 13 rebounds, while shooting 57.1% from the field and 45.5% from deep. Dan was also named to the 2019-20 All-Big Ten Second Team and 2019-20 All-Big Ten Defensive Team. He’s also been training with Tre Jones this off-season, too How is this guy sliding down draft boards…?

“Why isn’t Oturu set to go higher on draft night? Well, he’s a bit undersized for the center position. At 6-foot-10 with a 7-foot-2 wingspan, he’ll be a touch undersized for the average NBA center. Second, his movement skills are a bit off. He’s not wildly explosive or athletic, and his overall agility and lateral quickness is a bit stiff. He got by in college, but NBA teams have a concern that putting him in greater space will only exacerbate the issue.

Oturu is more Ibaka than Gasol as he’s not a particularly good passer and is much more comfortable spacing and shooting.

Sam Vacenie

Tyrell Terry

Tyrell Terry is maybe the smartest prospect in the draft this year. In his freshman season at Stanford this past winter, Terry exceeded all expectations and averaged 14.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists while shooting 44.1% from the field and an outstanding 40.8% from beyond the arc.

How does that three-point percentage stack up against other prospects in the first round? Well, that 40.8% is only behind Jahmi’us Ramsey’s 42.6% and Saddiq Bey’s 45.1%. Those numbers also earned him a spot on the 2019-20 All-Pac 12 Freshman Team.

“Terry is arguably the best shooter in the draft, a player who hit over 40 percent from 3 and 89 percent from the line. He has a long history of being a knockdown guy throughout the course of his high school career so far. He’s good as a shooter on pull-ups, and he’s good as a shooter directly off the catch.”

“He’s 160 pounds and his frame gives teams some pause. He needs to get stronger and keep putting on weight to deal with the rigors of the NBA. Second, his handle is a bit loose. He shows creativity and great body work to get opponents off-balance, but also has a tendency to pick up his dribble far too early.”

Sam Vacenie

Minnesota will most likely have four Minnesotans drafted this year, which will break the record from 2015 in which both Tyus Jones and Rashad Vaughn were drafted. This is outstanding for the basketball community in the Twin Cities and beyond. Hopefully, this draft will lead to more and more Minnesotans being drafted in the future.

Pitino Visits Top National Recruit Matthew Hurt (Rochester, MN); Offers 2019 De LaSalle Point Guard https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/gophers-basketball/pitino-visits-top-national-recruit-matthew-hurt-rochester-mn-offers-2019-de-lasalle-point-guard/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/gophers-basketball/pitino-visits-top-national-recruit-matthew-hurt-rochester-mn-offers-2019-de-lasalle-point-guard/#respond Wed, 18 Apr 2018 20:47:59 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=9292

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Despite still having not one, not two, but three open scholarships for next year, we’re gathered here today because of a special 2019 Minnesota basketball recruit:

As indicated by Matthew Hurt’s handful of stars (he’s a 5-Star prospect if you didn’t follow that), Richard Pitino’s meeting with the Rochester native Wednesday morning (earlier today) isn’t a typical recruiting visit. Currently, ESPN’s Recruiting Database has the John Marshall High School basketball player ranked as the 5th best prospect in the 2019 class.

To help put the 6’9” PF’s hoops prowess into perspective, his 95 overall grade is sandwiched between those of Tyus (97) and Tre (93) Jones. During the 2017-18 campaign, Hurt posted a video game esque per game average of 34.1 points, 14.3 rebounds, and 4.3 blocks.

via GIPHY

Oh, and by the way, 247Sports appreciates Matthew Hurt’s dominance a bit more than ESPN. They rank him as a .9986, which would put him ahead of BOTH Jones’ Brothers (barely).

When “keeping up with the Jones’ isn’t good enough:

In addition to his hometown roots, Matthew Hurt’s older brother, Michael, just finished his sophomore season (3.2 PPG, 2,5 RPG) with coach Pitino’s squad. While the family ties are encouraging, I wouldn’t get too excited:

The above-referenced article starts off by touching on seven different college hoop programs:

Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky, Kansas, Indiana, UCLA, and Memphis.

In an interview from last Thursday, Hurt referred to those top-tier programs as the “main seven [schools] right now.” While that doesn’t seem to bode well for Minnesota, to be fair, in the same conversation, he stated that the Gophers are “up there too.”

To me, the fact the Maroon and Gold weren’t mentioned in that initial batch of schools is extremely telling. Hopefully, I’m looking too far into Hurt’s comments.

As of now, 247Sports lists Kansas as the front-runner to acquire the talented athlete’s services. However, coach Cal seems to be in a nice spot:

If Minnesota can somehow land Hurt, it would be a complete game changer. If they can’t, 2019’s class offers other talented Land of 10K Lakes options:

Fair or Foul: Daniel Oturu Left Off All-Tournament Team Citing Sportsmanship Clause https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/uncategorized/fair-or-foul-daniel-oturu-left-off-all-tournament-team-citing-sportsmanship-clause/ Tue, 27 Mar 2018 19:55:29 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=9038

Saturday Night’s state title game between Cretin-Derham Hall (“CDH”) and Apple Valley for Minnesota’s Class 4A crown was an instant classic. Once the ultra entertaining back-and-forth battle was all said and done, Daniel Oturu and his CDH teammates walked away with a 79-78 victory.

The astonishing contest all but ended when, with less than a second remaining, the 6”10’ Oturu completed the back-end of a perfectly executed alley-oop:

As if a state championship-winning dunk isn’t enough, the Gopher commit’s final high school field goal marked his 60, and 61st points, of the tournament (that’s 20.7 PPG). He also averaged 9 RPG and 6.3 blocks over the impressive three-game stretch. Obviously, there’s a reason Richard Pitino & Co. are so excited to see Oturu’s immense talent don the Maroon and Gold:

With all of that said, when the stud big man’s name was left off of the Class 4A All-Tournament Team, the omission turned some heads nearly snapped some necks. When it came to on the court play alone, there isn’t an ounce a milliliter of doubt that he should have been selected to that team. All tourney long, Oturu and Apple Valley’s Tre Jones were both absolutely dominant.

Naturally, the Minnesota State High School League (“MSHSL“) was peppered with inquiries surrounding this decision. In response, the MSHSL’s Tim Leighton provided this information:

Although Leighton doesn’t directly refer to any particular play, in my eyes, that’s irrelevant. If you can add two plus two, you can find that this is the root cause of the “sportsmanship” issue:

First and foremost, considering the PC world in which we live, I understand why the MSHSL made this decision. By leaving Oturu off of the all-tournament squad, the organization avoided the dreaded backlash. Regardless of my understanding, this isn’t the direction I would have gone. The way I see it, his heat-of-the-moment action was probably a mistake. However, the perceived blunder was far lightyears away from egregious.

There’s a reason an individual needs two technicals to be ejected. Basketball player’s getting T’d up always has, and always will be, part of the sport. Personally, I love Daniel Oturu’s passion. When you’re an athlete of his prowess, having the right amount of piss and vinegar flowing through the veins can be a blessing. When considering the future Gopher’s big man, his intensity meter seems to be at absolutely ideal levels.

Whatever, though. It’s the championship that counts, right? Per Oturu’s below Tweet, that appears to be his mindset:

In just over a year’s time, Minnesota will be home to NCAA Basketball’s Final Four. In regards to the 2018 version, the city of San Antonio is preparing to embrace the Mount Rushmore of collegiate hoop teams.

Well, hosting that major sporting event should be a much better time than the recent, Eagle fan infested, Super Bowl. The way I see it, March Madness is the GOAT.

Assuming those do or die games are the proverbial Tom Brady, today’s action from the Target Center play’s the role of Peyton Manning:

With half of Saturday’s Minnesota Boys’ Basketball Tournament Championship games already in the bag, let’s take a look at tonight’s AAA and AAAA Championship Bouts. (We are hoping to have some recaps for all games later tonight/tomorrow morning)

Class AAA: Columbia Heights H.S. vs. Delano H.S. (5 PM)

Columbia Heights (22-6) is fresh off of a two point victory over top-ranked DeLaSalle (25-4). Their nail-biter defeat of the six-time defending Class AAA champions shocked the world tens of thousands of people.

Now, the Hylanders square off against the Calvin Wishart led Delano Tigers (20-11). Wishart’s 29 points and 19 rebounds propelled his school’s semifinal upset over last year’s runner-up, Austin High School.

Wait, what? 19 rebounds? The Senior guard is listed at 6’1″. That’s some Russell Westbrook type shit. After entering the tournament unranked, whether or not the scrappy Georgia Southern commit and his teammates can complete their Cinderella Story remains to be seen.

Whoever walks away with this one, it will be that school’s first-ever basketball crown.

Class AAAA: Cretin-Derham Hall H.S. vs. Apple Valley H.S. (8 PM)

Unlike when kids pick teams at recess, today’s games will be saving the best for last. The battle of the big boys will feature Minnesota’s Class of 2018’s two best players.

Daniel Oturu

After tonight, Daniel Oturu’s next official game will come with a Maroon and Gold jersey. The soon-to-be Gopher, who’s coming off a beast-mode performance, will lead Cretin-Derham Hall in their quest to dethrone the defending champions, Apple Valley Eagles (27-4).

Tre Jones

Tre Jones, the Star Tribune Player of the Year, is looking to end his absurdly decorated high school basketball career on top. In the event you aren’t familiar with the future Duke Blue Devil, here’s some literature guy’s blog thingy:

Currently, most of America’s brackets are more busted than Ricky Rubio’s jump shot. If you’re salty over knowing nothing about college basketball (that’s a joke. it’s been absolute madness), give your blood pressure a break and watch some high school competition.

They will be airing on KSTC Ch. 45.

I enjoy referring to Timberwolves’ Guard and Apple Valley High School alum, Tyus Jones, as “Minnesota’s Youngest Son.” Unfortunately, there are a couple of problems with that nickname. First and foremost, no one else seems to appreciate it. Second of all, he has a younger brother, Tre. The moniker contradicts the hell out of itself.

Tre Jones, like his older sibling was, is a high school basketball superstar. If that isn’t evident (it should be pretty damn evident) by his 8th overall national ranking in the 2018 class or commitment to Duke, it is by his latest “Golden Archievement“. It was announced earlier this week that the 6’3″ guard was named as a McDonald’s All-American.

The McDonald’s All-American team consists of 24 high school basketball seniors from throughout the country. The organization puts the two dozen elite athletes on different rosters for an all-star game and skills competition that leaves the NFL’s Pro-Bowl in the dust. This year’s contest will take place on March 28th in Atlanta.

The Coach K commit becomes the 13th player in Minnesota history to receive this honor. Like his younger brother, Tyus Jones was also named a McDonald’s All-American. A gentlemen you might recognize by the name of Karl-Anthony Towns joined his now Wolves teammate as part of 2014’s class.

Along with KAT, the three other players in the above picture, Tyler Ulis, Jahlil Okafor, and Myles Turner are all currently in the NBA.

Currently, Jones and his Apple Valley teammates are ranked 5th in Minnesota’s Class 4A. He is averaging 25.2 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 5.8 assists per game. I know, right? EATING. The Eagles will look to repeat as state champions come March.

Tyus Jones left some large shoes for his brother to fill. As you can tell, Tre has failed to disappoint. Minnesota’s newest McDonalds All-American is already half-way down his older brother’s path to success. Why fluctuate from a proven gameplan:
