Wow… what a terrible season. At least it’s ov…. oops… no it’s not. The Gophers still have 3 games left and what is likely to be just 1 Big Ten Tournament game, after (insert team here) beats them.

It’s quite the downfall. And, an unexpected one at that. I’m not sure what Richard Pitino did to piss off the basketball gods. Maybe they are punishing him for his dad’s transgressions.

Either way, it’s tough to come back from losing 4 of your top 6 players to injury or sexual assault allegations, while guys like Fitzgerald and Washington took longer to acclimate to the Big Ten than expected.

Either way, it’s been ugly and hard to watch.

We’ve written the good-old, positive, bring you up-type of articles as recently as this week, but after seeing this, I don’t really feel like being all that peppy. Not at 7:45 PM, after a busy Saturday, while I start to wonder if waking up at 5AM on Saturday mornings is really worth it. It certainly doesn’t help that I’m staring at a kitchen I haven’t cleaned up yet, because this news broke, that will be followed by the unloading and reloading of a full dishwasher.

Anyways, the Gopher basketball season is a dumpster fire. “Look to the future.” “Get ’em next time.” “There’s always next year.”

All that stuff. I need to hit the reset button. See you in the morning, Minnesota.

JUST IN: #Gophers star Reggie Lynch recommended for expulsion after third sexual assault allegation https://t.co/IcSkBUQ98F pic.twitter.com/Cg3NeQ7p8Y

(Updated Story: 1/9/18 7:15 PM; Get caught up by scrolling below this update)

More troubling allegations came against Reggie Lynch last week, that we hadn’t heard about before today. It looks like Reggie Lynch is facing a 3rd sexual assault allegation and this one comes with an expulsion recommendation from the EOAA, not just a suspension, like the alleged assault broken earlier this week (see below). All three of his alleged assaults took place from the time of April-May of 2016. Reggie wasn’t playing yet for the Gophers as he was sitting out his year of ineligibility after transferring from Illinois State.

Reggie Lynch seems to have a reputation of this sort of thing. Even we here at Minnesota Sports Fan have heard some rumbles that are troubling. But, that’s not the only interesting thing unfolding.

First, why didn’t we hear about this other report earlier this week, along with the other one (below). According to what’s being reported today, this 3rd total recommendation by the EOAA was decided the same day as the earlier recommended suspension. So, why now? It looks like we will have to wait for that answer.

Second, It looks like Reggie has brought on another attorney. Ryan Pacyga is the same attorney who represented the Gopher Football players when they were handling their own allegations/charges in 2016. Pacyga released this statement on Twitter earlier today:

Third, Lynch remains on the basketball team. He isn’t able to play but both Pitino and Coyle have confirmed that Reggie is still on, and able to practice with, the team. Lynch is a Senior and in his last year of eligibility.

These are very serious allegations. It will be very interesting to see what Pacyga has to say tomorrow in his press conference. I will also be keeping an eye on any statements or reactions by the University. Reggie Lynch is still on this basketball team which is really the only thing making anyone question where this is going. You’d think Coyle and Pitino would be happy to wash themselves of Lynch if they knew where this was going… Let’s not forget about the IMPECCABLE record/history Mark Coyle had when the Gophers hired him in 2016.

Again, these are scary and serious allegations. No person should go through something like sexual assault and it happens way too often. Even once is disgusting. I have a beautiful 6-year-old daughter and can’t even imagine the anger and sadness I’d feel just as a father…

However, we need to watch this closely and react as facts come out. There are way too many who will jump to one end or another. That’s scary too. We will not.

We’ll be back to update this tomorrow after Pacyga’s press conference at 1 PM CT, according to his tweets above.

(You can read about the allegations and recommended suspension from earlier this week, below, as this is a continuance of that story)

(Original Story: Written 1/5/18)

There was no need for an introduction on this one. It’s straight to the point on these ugly, bigger-than-sport, stories.

It was announced late Thursday night that Gophers center Reggie Lynch is facing suspension from the school and team until 2020. The accuser points to an April 2016 night in Reggie’s dorm room, where she is accusing Lynch of sexual assault. Both the Star Tribune and the Pioneer Press are reporting that the only investigating body currently looking into the matter is the EOAA. Because there wasn’t a police investigation, there was no suspension previously, unlike an issue he’s already dealt with.

Lynch has the option to appeal the suspension. It looks like he will stay on the floor if an appeal is filed. If not, the ruling, that entails no “University events” will go into effect on Tuesday. The circumstance in question occurred in Reggie Lynch’s dorm room. The victim is 20 years-old, and from a different school. There are no further details currently available as to what exactly occurred between the two. As of early Friday, neither the victim nor Lynch’s lawyer have issued statements. Richard Pitino is scheduled to meet with the media late Friday morning.

The over two and a half-year suspension is a recommendation from the U of M’s Office for Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action (EOAA). Currently, there is no police investigation into the matter.

This isn’t the first time Lynch has run into this exact issue. He was cleared of similar charges in an alleged incident that took place just a month after (May 2016) this accuser alleges. In this previous incident there were criminal charges filed, and Lynch was arrested, but was never charged and the EOAA cleared him after deciding it was “more likely than not” that Lynch believed the sex was consensual.

As for the actual hoop side of things, at this stage, they seem miniscule. The result on the court from missing him, if that’s the outcome, would be anything but. You don’t lose the reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year mid-season, and perform like nothing has changed.

I mentioned earlier that Lynch has until January 9th to appeal. If an appeal is filed, Lynch will stay on the floor while the appeal is heard. In the event the suspension is enforced, our season is done like dinner. Just like I did with the Detroit Lions two months ago, I’m writing our asses off. Any Sweet 16 aspirations are out the window. But again, if these accusations are true (even if they aren’t), non of that matters in the larger picture. These people are dealing with life, right now. The Life Game we all play lasts a lot longer and reaches far deeper than college basketball.

We’ll keep you updated as updates come through.

The Gopher Men’s Front Court is in GOOD Hands for Years to Come https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/gophers-basketball/gopher-mens-front-court-good-hands-years-come/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/gophers-basketball/gopher-mens-front-court-good-hands-years-come/#respond Wed, 22 Nov 2017 00:30:56 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=4150 Gopher Men’s Basketball forward, Jordan Murphy, was named the Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday. With Murphy winning the award last week, yesterday’s recognition meant back-to-back honors. Per StarTribune.com, this is the FIRST TIME IN HISTORY a Golden Gopher has accomplished this feat.

Congratulations Jordan! It must feel good to stand alone in Minnesota history. Someone contact the people at Guinnessworldrecords.com ASAP.

Only three other athletes in our program’s history have won the award twice in one season. Gophersports.com lists Kris Humphries, Joel Pryzbilla, and Quincy Lewis as the other talented two-time recipients. If Murphy won the first two weeks, you can reasonably expect him to win AT LEAST one more this season. Once that is accomplished, he’ll join Lewis as the only three-time recipients in one year.

Sports are like business. If you’re crushing, let your numbers do the talking. Talk to us, Jordan Murphy:

The San Antonio native has played out of his mind thus far. 3rd Team Big Ten last year must not have been enough. The Big Ten Player of the Week is averaging 24.8 PPG and 12.8 RPG, while shooting 61.4% from the floor. Murphy is on the fast track for 1st Team in 2017-2018. If he stays anywhere near these numbers, he’ll be a staple in the conferences POY conversations.

The Gophers Junior plays a hell of a lot bigger than you’d expect from his 6’6″ frame. That IS NOT a misprint. Both GopherSports.com and ESPN.com list Murphy at that size. Basketball players are notorious for adding a couple of inches to their actual height. It looks better when opponents and scouts are doing their research.

Are we doing the opposite here with Jordan Murphy? The young-man seems a lot taller than 6’6″ to me. Maybe he just plays like it.

At the end of the day, height is just a number. NBA scouts will pick it apart, but screw them. You know who else is 6’6″? Charles Barkley. An absolute rebounding machine at the pro-level. On the opposite side of this conversation is the 7’0″ Brook Lopez. As a starter last year in Brooklyn, he averaged 5.4 RPG. That’s an unacceptable number from a 28 year-old man with that kind of size. When it comes to rebounding, athleticism and tenacity trump height 7 days of the week.

Murphy never will be Charles Barkley. Barkley is a Top 50 All Time NBA Player. It’s just an example of size being overrated. Chuck is a national Treasure, so I like to bring him up whenever possible. If you’d prefer a different comparison, ask.

Let’s take a moment and appreciate what we have in Minnesota right now for big men (especially if you include KAT…but we’ll leave that for another article and another day… he won Western Conference Player of the Week last week..). It has literally NEVER been like this. Jordan is only one half of the best front court in the Big Ten. Murphy’s front-court teammate Reggie Lynch won Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year last year averaging 3.5 blocks per game. He’s averaging 5.5 so far this season…. Reggie’s eligibility runs out after this season. Even without his return, the future big men for the University are promising.

Richard Pitino has landed some big recruits already in his tenure, one of them being Minnesotan and current Sophomore, Amir Coffey. Some put his newly signed 2018 big man out of Cretin Derham Hall, Daniel Oturu, ahead of him in Pitino’s recruiting trophies since he’s been in Minnesota.

And Dan isn’t alone. Murphy will still have a year of eligibility left after this season, giving him one year with Oturu. Oturu would come in and start on most teams in the Big Ten but I doubt he will on this team. Let’s not forget about Eric Curry who was lost for the season to a devastating knee injury before the year could even get started. He will receive a medical redshirt and be just a Sophomore next year. If you’ve forgotten how good Curry was in his first year, let me refresh your memory. He played 20 MPG as a Freshman on a team that won 24 games.

And 2019 you ask??? How about another 6’9″ PF out of Minnesota? This one would be forever implanted in Pitino’s “Mount Rushmore” of recruits.

Minnesota is back in action tonight vs. Alabama A&M. As always, Go Gophers! Let’s make it 5-0. Do me a favor and cue the damn highlights:
