I’m not in this business for click-bait. This made me double-take when I watched it.

First, when I started thinking about what was happening in this video, and where the blog post was going end up as I reached for my laptop, I almost hesitated. It ends with two of our most promising young players needing to be traded, due to our lack developmental ability as an NHL organization, over the last 10 years. That’s fucking depressing for a Wednesday morning.

But hey, at least it’s out of the way. Wripping off the band-aid is the best way for removal. Now, let me break down this hockey scuffle because I have absolutely zero experience playing hockey and I definitely lost the only fight I’ve ever been in personally. Play that fucking tape back:

[/et_pb_code][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.22.7″]

It all starts with Nino. He goes in for some extra action on the puck when the Carolina goalie has it covered up. I don’t know when the whistle blew and I don’t care. I do the same thing in NHL on PS4 which clearly means something so.. no problems yet.

But things get frisky quickly when #47 (don’t care to look up his name) of Boston takes offense with Nino’s extracurriculars involving his goalie and slashes at Nino once in the shin-guards, to pose his displeasure. I had to roll the tape back in slow motion a few times because it looks like #47 takes a face shot with his stick immediately after his initial warning slash, but after further review, he did not have his stick in his left hand when he made the motion. Moving on.

Now is where Charlie comes in and things get interesting. There is no doubt that Charlie has gotten over his time in Minnesota. He doesn’t even give Nino a moment of chatting with his new teammate, #47, before laying 4-5 crosschecks to Niederreiter’s neck/chest area, with no regard to human life.

Then, Coyle goes to the always-embarrassing facepalm, as the ref is trying to breakup the scrum. It’s a devastating moment for Nino’s pride. To have another man fend you off with a one-handed face palm is not the way you want to go out.

Coyle was clearly the aggressor in this situation and Nino looks about as shocked as anyone when it’s all over, staring down Coyle with two death-rays that Charlie can’t even stand to peer back into. Notice that he knew he did Niederreiter dirty. He wouldn’t even look back at him afterward.

And to think that ESPN is pushing European Kickball instead of this sport… sad.

Nino Niederreiter draws the first short straw.

You may not like the trade or you may think the Wild got the short end of this deal but I don’t even care anymore. We could have traded some of these guys for a bag of pucks 2-3 years ago and we’d be better off right now.

I’d take a couple of non-playoff seasons, for better draft picks, that may have led to some of these young superstars that are coming up through the league now.

The Wild’s reliance on Granlund, Niederreiter and Coyle has proven to provide nothing but mediocre and consistently inconsistent hockey. At first glance, this deal might look tilted in Carolina’s favor but the numbers show that these are two underperforming players who needed changes in scenery.

Also, if the Wild want to keep Coyle and Rask at Center then we should expect another trade somewhere before the deadline because someone will have to move to wing with the way things stand right now…

Nino Niederreiter Returns, Scores Hat Trick, Breaks Record – Welcome Back. https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-wild/nino-niederreiter-returns-scores-hat-trick-breaks-record-welcome-back/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-wild/nino-niederreiter-returns-scores-hat-trick-breaks-record-welcome-back/#respond Fri, 05 Jan 2018 14:42:43 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=6282

In his first NHL action since December 22nd, Nino Niederreiter made his presence known in a big way. During Minnesota’s 6-2 victory over Buffalo, the 25-year-old recorded the second hat trick of his young career.

And people say former Chicago Bear, Devin Hester, is the greatest returner of all time. After Niederreiter’s performance on Thursday night, I beg to differ.

Somewhat of a selfish move by him, to dwarf Zach Parise’s welcome back performance. Number 11 played well in his first game of the year on Tuesday. However, it was nothing compared to what Nino accomplished in his first contest in almost two weeks. He was out due to a lower-body injury.

Speaking of Parise, how’d game 2 go?

  • 19 shifts over 17:30 of ice time.
  • 1 assist for his first point of the season.
  • Most importantly, the 33 year-old looked healthy as a horse.

Now that we’re up to speed on the local boy, back to Nino.

With his parents in town from Switzerland, they were fortunate enough to see their son score three goals in the game’s first 24:02. The final one must have just been for good measure. He only needed two to get into the record books:

Take a backseat, Mark.

Baseball managers going full psycho on home-plate umpires is one of the greatest traditions in sports. However, it may be topped by fans throwing hats on the ice after a hockey player secures a hatty. The manager meltdowns don’t really go towards any sort of cause. And in Minnesota, most hats during the winter are STOCKING hats so Nino is keeping people warm during this long cold spell. What a guy.

The Minnesota wild are now 11-1-1 over their last 13 home games. They will travel to Colorado next for a Saturday night contest vs. the Avalanche, before returning home to face the Flames on January 9th.

P.S. Nino’s mom and dad handed out chocolate during the game! Between the hat-trick and chocolate, the Wild management needs to figure out how to get them to relocate to MN.

Zach Parise’s Return Game Draws Rave Reviews; Gives Wild Much-Needed Depth https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-wild/zach-parises-return-game-draws-rave-reviews-gives-wild-much-needed-depth/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-wild/zach-parises-return-game-draws-rave-reviews-gives-wild-much-needed-depth/#respond Thu, 04 Jan 2018 00:12:44 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=6160

In Zach Parise’s first official NHL action since April, 2017, the Minnesota Wild had what FSN’s Kevin Gorg called “arguably their best performance” of the 2017-18 campaign.

Their 5-1 victory over the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night marked their 40th game of the season (21-16-3).

The pre-game smelling salts had to have been just for good measure. You’d imagine the Wild players had plenty of blood pumping through their veins, prior to, and throughout, the dominate victory. Parise (661 career points) returning from back-surgery DEFINITELY seemed to boost his teammates.

In regards to Parise, well, they threw him right into the interview gauntlet after the first period. He discussed how his legs felt good. If he is anything like me with his time off, I’m not very confident his lungs felt that way, but conditioning will only improve.

As for how he actually played, the reviews were solid. Star Wars: The Last Jedi esque.

In his 13:35 of action on Tuesday, the former All Star had 3 shots on goal and 1 takeaway. Outside of Jason Zucker, Zach Parise had the most ice time out of the Wild’s wingers. Despite the team scoring a handful of goals, Parise was unable to find his way onto the scoresheet.

Even without registering a point, the overwhelming theme around his return is the WONDERS he does for the team’s depth. With Bruce Boudreau now having number 11 at his disposal, he isn’t nearly as handcuffed when setting his lines.

Minnesota is now 10-1-1 in their last 12 at Xcel. Knock on wood, but things are starting to trend in the right direction. However this season ultimately plays itself out, let’s hope the newly returned MN Native is along the ride. The fact we are about to parlay his return with Nino Niederreiters, seems to have the State of Hockey pretty optimistic.

Finally, earlier, I compared Zach Parise’s return performance to Star Wars reviews. However, Zach Parise is no Jedi. No, no, no. The man is more of a wizard type:

Nino Signs 5 Year Extension with the Wild https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-wild/nino-5-year-extension-with-wild/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-wild/nino-5-year-extension-with-wild/#respond Mon, 31 Jul 2017 01:29:12 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=2164 The Wild were able to lock down one of their targeted restricted free agents on Sunday. Nino Niederreiter will be a member of the Wild for 5 more years and he will make $26.25 Million in the process.

Nino played all 82 games for the second year in a row while contributing career highs in just about every category via Hockey-Reference.com:

  • Goals: 25
  • Assists: 32
  • Points: 57
  • +/-: 17

Here are some Nino highlights to get you jacked up for hockey season via NHL.com:

The Wild have two restricted free agents left on the roster. Mikael Granlund will be Fletcher’s top priority. Newly acquired Marcus Foligno is also a RFA but is expected to sign. The Wild, per usual, will be very tight against the cap. If a deal can’t be signed by Friday then an arbitration hearing is scheduled.

Here are some additional notes from Michael Russo of the Star Tribune.
