I really did. But after the first semifinal game to 40 points, I switched over to highlights of the 1-on-1 Unrivaled Tournament (available on Max). I was pleased to see Minnesota Lynx superstar Napheesa Collier win the tournament, and doing so with defensive effort was delightful.

The $200,000 Collier won by beating Washington Mystics forward Aaliyah Edwards in 1-on-1 was the single biggest prize money in women’s basketball history. Each of Collier’s Lunar Owls got $10,000, too. The money wasn’t what made the tournament fun to watch, though. It was pride that made it quality entertainment.

MN Lynx superstar and Unrivaled co-founder solves NBA’s issues… again

NBA fans have longed for defensive effort to return to the NBA All-Star Game for decades. Hell, they’ve been waiting decades for it to be entertaining. Minnesota Lynx superstar Napheesa Collier might have solved both problems with her 1-on-1 Unrivaled Tournament. You could tell the players were giving it their all. They were dripping sweat and gassed, and for good reason. The pace was grueling.

The format was very smart. They played make it, take it to a specified point total: 12 through the semis and 8 in the best-of-three finals. There was a seven-second shot clock, and players had the option to clear defensive rebounds to an outlet passer on each wing. That gave them time to catch their breath before getting open to receive the ball back for another seven-second run.

Each player had a timeout per game. Shooting fouls were awarded one free throw worth two points. Players drawing non-shooting fouls were awarded possession. Napheesa Collier was even smart about the situations in which she fouled, usually on the ground and usually to get a breather. It was a brilliant approach and an unrivaled effort.

Imagining an NBA All-Star 1-on-1 tournament

Imagine Anthony Edwards and Kevin Durant playing 1-on-1 for money. The admirer versus the admired. The student versus the master. You could even throw some money at the winner’s teammates, because I do think the NBA’s new format of a four-team, single-elimination tournament works better than any other format they’ve tried to breathe life into a dead event.

If someone gets hurt playing 1-on-1 basketball at the NBA All-Star Game, it would be a bummer, sure. But it’s highly unlikely. It’d be one of those non-contact injuries that could happen in practice anyway. The NBA All-Star Game just needs the level of effort to approach that of NBA practices instead of pregame shoot-around.

Related: WNBA Insider Says Minnesota Lynx a Logical Fit for Former Finals MVP

Collier and her Unrivaled 1-on-1 competitors were obviously pushed, but not beyond the point of in-game competition. They controlled their effort, which was somewhere between practice and game play. Physical post play was on display. There were blocks and very few threes. The skills shown went far beyond shooting, from which the NBA would also benefit. That silly skills challenge is ridiculous and could go away.

The first day of NBA All-Star Weekend could still include the celebrity game and rising stars game. The three-point shooting contest could follow that, which should always include a WNBA shooter versus an NBA shooter, according to 5.4 million viewers. Then the first night culminates in the NBA Dunk Contest followed by the first round of 1-on-1 games.

Day two should be 1-on-1 semifinals and finals followed by the four-team tournament, or vice versa. Hell, the 1-on-1 tournament is more entertaining anyway. LeBron versus Steph. Luka versus AD. Can you imagine?

Mixed Reports Cloud Anthony Edwards’ Late Scratch from NBA All-Star Game https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/minnesota-timberwolves-news/anthony-edwards-all-star-game-scratch-why/ Mon, 17 Feb 2025 03:24:31 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=60369 The Minnesota Timberwolves are on break with the rest of the NBA this weekend, as the league holds its annual All-Star Game in San Francisco. This year, the Wolves had just one representative All-Star on hand, 23-year-old superstar Anthony Edwards.

Ant earned his All-Star bid with 27.5 points per game, good for 5th most in the NBA, to go with 5.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists. Out of all the top scorers in the league, Edwards is the only one who has played more than 53 games this season.

Anthony Edwards drops out of All-Star game last minute

But that didn’t help Anthony Edwards stay in the All-Star lineup on Sunday night. After walking into the arena and being announced as a starter on Team Kenny… Ant was scratched from the lineup late with what Jon Krawczynski (The Athletic) reported and Edwards later explained as a groin strain.

We know that Ant has been dealing with some lower body issues, recently, so this wasn’t a huge surprise to most Minnesota Timberwolves fans who pay close attention to their favorite team’s best player. The same cannot be said for the rest of the NBA fanbase, who again came away disappointed with yet another failed NBA All-Star Game.

Why did Edwards drop out exactly?

But Ant’s late scratch was made a bit more murky by a contradicting report by Marc J Spears, which originally said that he missed tonight’s game due to a cold. Shortly after tweeting out his original report, Spears edited his post on X to include the groin injury… two different times.

Who knows exactly why Anthony Edwards dropped out of Sunday night’s All-Star Game early. He told reporters that, if he had more time to warm up, he probably would have given it a go. Ant hopes that this injury will not cause him to miss any time in the second half of the season… if his injury is the real problem.

Anthony Davis Says Timberwolves are the Best Team He’s Seen This Season https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/anthony-davis-minnesota-timberwolves-best-team-lakers-played/ Sun, 18 Feb 2024 20:13:24 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=47950 The NBA’s top players and celebrities are gathered in Indianapolis this weekend for the All-Star game, which tips off tonight at 7 p.m CT. Ahead of tonight’s game, Los Angeles Lakers superstar Anthony Davis addressed the media, like all of the players have been throughout the weekend.

Anthony Davis says Minnesota Timberwolves are the best team Lakers have seen this season

In this particular interview, Davis was asked of the Lakers opponents this season is the best. His answer, the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Reporter: “Best team you’ve played this season?”

Davis: “Uhh, probably Minnesota and [Anthony Edwards], they are playing really well, Ant’s just taken his game to another level.”

Indeed, the Timberwolves have faced the Lakers twice this season and emerged victorious on both occasions. In their first matchup (Dec 21), the Wolves secured a seven point win at home. Anthony Edwards led the charge with an impressive performance, tallying 27 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists.

Related: Will Anthony Edwards Really Play All-Star Game Left-Handed After Failed Skills Competition?

Nine days later, the two teams clashed again, with the Timberwolves securing a narrow 108-106 victory. Anthony Edwards stole the spotlight on LeBron’s 39th birthday, delivering an impressive performance with 31 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists.

This was the game where LeBron hit a 3 pointer that appeared to send the contest into overtime, but officials ruled that his foot was on the line and he proceeded to lose his mind.

The Timberwolves are set to face the Lakers twice more in the regular season and potentially could meet in the playoffs. It’s encouraging to hear a top player like Davis openly acknowledge the Timberwolves as the toughest team they’ve encountered.

Then again, it also shows that, while national talking heads might still be dismissing the Wolves, other NBA teams are not. They’re getting everybody’s best shot night in and night out. But let’s not forget about the real reason Davis dreads playing against the Timberwolves. He has to play against Rudy Gobert.

No, unfortunately Ant won’t be in the dunk contest, like Wolves fans have been longing for. He will participate in the skills competition, though, another All-Star competition KAT has already won. Karl, later that night, will go for another 3-point contest trophy.

Chris Finch also earned the honor of coaching the West on Sunday night, at the All-Star game. Even t hough the Timberwolves now sit 3rd place in the conference now, they stood on top a few nights ago when All-Star coaches were named.

Timberwolves Players Love Chris Finch and His Up-Front, Blunt Coaching Style https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/minnesota-timberwolves-players-love-head-coach-chris-finch/ Mon, 05 Feb 2024 16:29:53 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=47522 It took until Chris Finch’s first press conference for me to understand how good of hands the Minnesota Timberwolves were in. But for those in the basketball world who had crossed paths with the first-time head coach during the last two decades, there was never a doubt.

Related: Chris Finch Becomes First Timberwolves All-Star Game Coach Since Flip Saunders

Before landing in Minnesota, Finch had coached all over the world and found success pretty much everywhere he went. And at every stop, he made good players into better players. Which is why former Wolves president of basketball operations, Gersson Rosas, pre-targeted Finch back in February 2021, when he was an assistant with the Toronto Raptors, and Ryan Saunders was still the head coach here.

Rosas was fired not too long after hiring Finch, and that saga was something worth digging back into another time, but there was never a doubt about Chris, even after Gersson was out. The rest of the organization clearly knew what it had, in Finchy, very quickly.

Minnesota Timberwolves players celebrate All-Star head coach

Three years later, to the month, the Timberwolves are the best team in the Western Conference entering the All-Star break, meaning Finch is the head coach of the West All-Star team, an honor he clinched last night when the Wolves blew out the Houston Rockets at Target Center.

After becoming the first Minnesota Timberwolves head coach to earn the All-Star nod since Flip Saunders did it exactly 20 years ago (2004), Wolves players waited quietly in the locker room as Finch walked in, as if this was just going to be another postgame speech. As he started to speak, they ambushed their All-Star coach with water bottles in celebration.

Then, one-by-one players went to bat for their head coach and how badly they wanted to get this win for him. It doesn’t take very many of these quotes before you realize how instrumental Chris Finch is to the development and growth of the Minnesota Timberwolves and youngsters who had never reached their full potential before he arrived.

“That probably was the greatest thing of this season. That’s dope for him to get recognized for how great he’s coached this year.”

Anthony Edwards postgame on Chris Finch

Finch is more than a players coach

But that doesn’t mean Finch is a players-first coach who lets the locker room run wild, caring more about player feelings than he does the basketball being played on the court. There have been multiple times this season, both after losses and wins, that Finchy has come to the postgame podium ready to vent over his teams failures from that game.

Related: Timberwolves Tried Trading 4 Draft Picks for Tyus Jones but Wizards Said No

Most notably, Finch used his postgame interview to vent after KAT went off for 62 points, in a Wolves loss early last week. The head coach was so disgusted and blinded by how poorly the Timberwolves played that he seemed to completely forget about Karl’s huge night.

Wolves players don’t just like Chris Finch, they respect him. He’s a real dude and whatever he’s willing to say in front of media, he’s already been much more up-front with that player. If you think the above was a one-off scenario, try again.

At MSF, we’ve documented a couple times he’s used the media to vent over the last couple season, not to mention his rant above. They know what he expects and they know that, should they not meet expectations, they’ll know about it.

The first thing that Wolves players mention when asked about Finch is his willingness to coach this team hard. The modern NBA is a star-driven league, and that can make the practice of coaching them a delicate one. But these players say Finch doesn’t play favorites.

“He doesn’t back down from anybody,” Conley said. “He’s a guy that really challenges you, calls you out in front of everybody. He lets you know what you need to do to get better every day and is consistent with that.”

The Athletic

Every basketball soul Finch has come across has the same message. Not only is Chris a great basketball mind, but he knows what makes players tick, which is so much more important than X’s and O’s.

If you see Gersson Rosas, thank him for Chris Finch

Chris Finch during Dallas Mavericks vs Minnesota Timberwolves
Bruce Kluckhohn-USA TODAY Sports

In mid-February 2021, Gersson Rosas fired Ryan Saunders immediately following an ugly road loss vs Tom Thibodeau and the New York Knicks. Like… before the team got back on the plane that night, meaning Saunders had to find his own way back to MSP.

Related: Every Player the Minnesota Timberwolves Have Been Linked to Before NBA Trade Deadline

Gersson was so desperate to hire Finch that he didn’t even take the time to order Ryan an Uber to the airport, because he was already on the phone offering Finch the head coaching job. No coaching search, no interim replacement, no diversity.

All Rosas wanted was Chris Finch and he didn’t care who he had to piss off or offend to get it done. As long as he landed Finchy, everything else would work out. Clearly, Gersson was right, even if he never got to stick around to see his controversial coaching hire bear fruit.

Which Timberwolves Big Man Deserves NBA All-Star Nod More, KAT or Rudy Gobert? https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/more-deserving-all-star-karl-anthony-towns-or-rudy-gobert/ Sat, 27 Jan 2024 16:00:32 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=47129 Anthony Edwards will be an All-Star in 2023-2024. You can easily argue that he should already have been named to the Western Conference starting lineup, which were announced on Thursday evening. But there are zero doubts about whether or not Ant’s name will be called on February 1, when full East and West rosters will be revealed on TNT.

Related: Jaden McDaniels Knew Mikal Bridges Would Miss Clutch Free Throws

That’s not the case for a couple of other Minnesota Timberwolves superstars, specifically big men Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert. Will either (maybe both) of Edwards’ teammates join him on the West’s All-Star roster in Indiana?

There’s a lot of front court talent right now around the league and it’s hard to see both guys making it. So if only one Wolves big man is selected, who should get it? Who deserves it more?

Does Karl-Anthony Towns Deserve to Be an All-Star?

karl-anthony towns
Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports

Two-time All-NBA and three-time All-Star, Karl-Anthony Towns is one of the best shooting bigs of all time. While others like Joel Embiid score more points, few power forwards and centers are more efficient than KAT. In fact, there is only one PF/C in the NBA this season (with >200 3PT attempts) who has a higher effective field goal rate than Towns and it’s his teammate, Naz Reid.

Only nine players have ever landed in the 50/40/90 club, and Towns is flirting with becoming the tenth this season. He’s shooting 52% from the field, 42% from deep. The only thing holding him back from becoming the 10th member to this exclusive club is his 88% free-throw rate, which would be his career best for a season.

Recently, Towns has been on an absolute tear, topping his new career-high with a 62-point game against Charlotte, albeit in a losing effort. Other stars may gripe when a new player comes in and clearly steals the spotlight as the new franchise player in town, but not KAT. Instead, he’s embraced playing the role of big brother to Anthony Edwards, helping him reach his full potential.

But we can’t forget about how effective Towns has still been too. He’s a perfect fit in coach Chris Finch’s offense next to Rudy Gobert, and he’s also played a major role in improving the Timberwolves’ defense, shown by ranking third in the NBA in defensive win shares this season.

Still, is Towns an All-Star? Even after averaging 26.1 PPG while shooting 54% from the field and an incredible 49.4% from distance throughout the month of January, knowing there are only 12 slots available, it’s tough to see how KAT snags a spot this year.

Timberwolves’ Success Should Make Rudy Gobert an All-Star

rudy gobert
Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

Towns may or may not deserve an All-Star nod, especially after his recent stretch of excellent performances. But what about the Timberwolves’ top defender, Rudy Gobert? Coming into the year, some thought it was only a matter of time before Tim Connelly blew up the roster, admitting his ‘mistake’ by trading for the three-time Defensive Player of the Year. Turns out, the haters were wrong.

Gobert has helped Minnesota become the best defensive team in the NBA. Not only do the Wolves allow fewer points than any other team, but they have the league’s best defensive rating too. While others deserve credit, Gobert is the engine that makes it all work. He’s all but completely repaired the hit to his reputation, after his down 2022-23, and is now back on track to win his fourth DPOY award.

Teammate Mike Conley recently called Gobert one of the five most impactful NBA players today. While we’re not ready to go that far, his impact on the Timberwolves has been undeniable. But hey, it’s not just teammates and Timberwolves fans who see how Gobert has returned to dominating the paint. NBA experts have taken notice too.

The Athletic’s Zach Harper recently selected who he’d pick as NBA All-Star reserves. Obviously, Edwards was included, but only one of the Timberwolves bigs earned a nod between Gobert and KAT.

Harper feels Gobert has done enough to merit his fourth All-Star appearance, but not Towns. Unfortunately, he didn’t provide any reasons why one player was left out while others were included, but he did advocate for the league to expand rosters from 12 to 15 players.

Related: Kevin Garnett Demands More NBA MVP Love for Anthony Edwards

As to who Harper chose over Towns? Well, Rudy is obviously one big that beat him out, in Harper’s projection. He also opted for Houston’s Alperen Sengun, LAL’s Anthony Davis, and LAC’s Kawhi Leonard in the frontcourt.

When seeing that list, it’s hard to argue Towns as more deserving. That doesn’t mean he’s not in the midst of a great season, though. We’ll have to see how it all shakes out but it will be intriguing to see if either, any or both of the Wolves big men make it.

Anthony Edwards Blames Himself, Deep Talent Pool for All-Star Snub https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/anthony-edwards-all-star-snub/ Fri, 03 Feb 2023 19:22:07 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=41643 Anthony Edwards has undoubtedly been one of the best players in the Western Conference this season. Yet, the young superstar was not recognized as an All-Star when the reserves were announced on Thursday.

A Minnesota Timberwolves player being passed on for any accolade, in favor of less productive veterans who fans remember fondly and coaches respect in greater fashion, is nothing new. And Ant made one thing clear even before the selections were made.

He doesn’t care. In fact, Edwards wouldn’t even admit he was snubbed. Instead, he pointed to his slow start this season and a deep Western Conference talent pool, as to why he didn’t make the cut.

Edwards has only one thing on his mind and it isn’t scheduled two weeks from now. Ant just wants another taste of the NBA playoffs. So on Friday, when he was asked about his All-Star snub, the former #1 overall pick told media members that he never expected to make the roster.

Anthony Edwards WAS snubbed.

Contrary to what Anthony Edwards is telling reporters today, he should be an All-Star. He’s averaging 24.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game (all career highs) to go with a 46% FG%, 37% 3PT% and 54% eFG% (also career highs).

Ant ranks near the top of the conference in multiple important statistical categories, including 1st in steals (6th SPG), 1st in minutes played (1st MPG), 3rd in points (8th PPG), 5th in defensive win shares and 10th in usage %. Not only does he put up huge numbers, he’s always available. Something that has been pointed out by those offended by his snub.

Oh, and he has single-handedly dragged the Minnesota Timberwolves to an above-.500 record beyond the midway point of a season that would have died months ago without him. Instead, the Wolves are well within reach of a top-6 playoff spot come April.

anthony edwards snub minnesota timberwolves nba all star game
Perfect Attitude

Ant played this situation perfectly. Unlike other stars who play or have played in a Wolves uniform **[cough] KAT [cough] Kevin Love [cough] Stephon Marbury [cough]**, Edwards turned the finger on himself before pointing it to a team goal as his only real concern.

You know Anthony Edwards wants to be an NBA All-Star. Deep down, I’d expect this snub to drive him into an even more dominant 2nd-half of the season. That’s a scary thought for the rest of the league.

Combined with the increasing comfortability of Rudy Gobert and the eventual return of Karl-Anthony Towns, that should lift the Timberwolves beyond the play-in tournament.

Karl-Anthony Towns to Compete in 3-Point Contest https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/karl-anthony-towns-to-compete-in-3-point-contest/ Wed, 09 Feb 2022 01:13:18 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=37996 Karl-Anthony Towns is already an all-star but it was announced on Tuesday night that he will also participate in the Mountain Dew 3-point competition the Saturday before (Feb 19). It will be his first time taking part in the 3-point contest but it’s not his first appearance on an NBA all-star Saturday. KAT had an impressive showing in the 2016 skills competition.

Towns has the 4th-best 3-point percentage on the season (Basketball-Reference), out of all eight contestants, but doesn’t shoot nearly as many shots from beyond the arc as the others. There’s a reason he’s the only big man participating. We’ll see if that matters in any way once the lights come on. It’ll be fun to watch KAT and LaVine, two best friends, compete against each other.

Market Bias Gets Andrew Wiggins NBA ASG Starter Nod Over Karl-Anthony Towns https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/market-bias-gets-andrew-wiggins-nba-asg-starter-nod-over-karl-anthony-towns/ Fri, 28 Jan 2022 01:53:19 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=37849 Tonight on TNT, the NBA All-Star rosters are being announced and there’s one selection that’s receiving a lot more heat that others, and for good reason. Andrew Wiggins, who is scoring and rebounding at rates lower than his career average, was selected as a FRONT court STARTER for the Western Conference.

Wiggins is averaging, make sure you’re sitting down for this, 18.1 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2 assists per game. His career averages are 19.4 PPG, 4.4 RPG and 2.3 APG. Sure, most of his efficiency metrics are up, but an increase in efficiency doesn’t constitute a starter role when, in past years, he couldn’t even find his way onto the roster.

Towns >>> Wiggins

Who should’ve been selected ahead of him? Well, since we’re talking FRONT court players, why look any further than his former teammate, Karl-Anthony Towns. Back in Minnesota, KAT is posting numbers that dwarf Wiggins’ while leading a Minnesota Timberwolves team that’s a strong candidate for a top-6 playoff seed come April.

Let’s compare the numbers, shall we?

PlayerPPGRPGAPG2P%3P%eFG%ORtgDRtgPERTS%
Wiggins18.14.22.0.529.404.55811110616.2.578
Towns24.19.43.6.568.410.58311710823.2.629
Basketball-Reference.com

There’s simply ZERO logical explanation to explain why Andrew Wiggins would be named as a front court starter in this year’s All-Star game and KAT wasn’t. The only non-logical explanation is based on geography. Wiggins moved on from fly-over country Minnesota and now plays on the West Coast with Steph Curry for the Golden State Warriors.

Because of that, Wiggins has been able to change who the outside world thinks he is as a basketball player. He plays for the Warriors now and that has allowed him to get on national TV more often and has allowed him plenty of puff pieces about how he has turned his career around, thanks to the help of big market loving NBA media.

Big Market Bias

Meanwhile, KAT has reiterated his love for Minnesota and continues to revel in a future that includes a lot of winter jackets and frozen fingers if he doesn’t pack gloves. Because of that, he stays off the national media’s radar and off nationally televised broadcasts.

Karl-Anthony Towns is getting shit on because he’s dedicated to playing hard and trying to turn a culture that’s lived at the bottom of the NBA for two decades. Wiggins got a starting All-Star nod tonight because Steph Curry and Steve Kerr convinced him to play defense and stop taking long step-back two’s.

NBA All-Star Teams Announced; Butler and Towns Picked to Same Team https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/nba-star-teams-announced-butler-towns-picked-team/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/nba-star-teams-announced-butler-towns-picked-team/#respond Fri, 26 Jan 2018 04:16:30 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=7433

We posted an article on Wednesday regarding Jimmy Butler and Karl-Anthony Towns selections as 2018 NBA All Stars. That piece touched on how the game itself is no longer a battle between conferences. Like the XFL will in their 2020 rebirth, the association switched the style up.

With Bron and Steph having completed the most PC draft possible, the rosters were released on Thursday evening. As for Minnesota’s representatives, they will remain teammates. The pair that’ll be leading the Wolves to their first playoff appearance in 14 years were taken by the Davidson alum, who doubles as the best shooter in the world. #TeamStephen.

Don’t be like me and get your hopes up over the thought of seeing KAT and Joel Embiid take on the Pelicans big man duo of DeMarcus Cousins and Anthony Davis. Embiid’s joints (tendons? muscles? I’m not a doctor) are softer than papier-mâché. Can the league just go ahead and update his status for the February 18th contest as questionable?

My stance on the All-Star Draft is this: Right play call, poor execution. On the surface, I appreciate the added wrinkle. For organizations like the NBA, “giving the people what they want” is usually the best approach but if they wanted viewers they would have aired that bi%^h. That would’ve been entertainment at its best. However, as Wednesday’s article mentioned, despite my disappointment as a fan, I understand why the league didn’t televise the draft. $Billions$

If they’re not going to air the selections, then give us fans the matchups we crave. Unfortunately, the positive PR for Lebron and Steph from their selections seems to good to be true. Stay woke.
