MLB to Subsidize Minnesota Twins for Lost TV Revenue https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/minnesota-twins-news/minnesota-twins-news-mlb-subsidize-teams-tv-rsn-revenue-losses/ Mon, 29 Jul 2024 16:37:58 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=53273 Will the Minnesota Twins make any needle-moving trades between now and the 5:00 pm (CT) MLB trade deadline on Tuesday? That is the $35 million question.

The Twins have plenty of needs, but finding a trade partner is proving difficult since the Pohlads won’t sign off on any deal that adds additional salary to the team’s books for this season. So that will make negotiations much more difficult.

MLB to subsidize Minnesota Twins?

The longtime owners cut $35 million from Minnesota’s player payroll during the offseason. Now, they reportedly refuse to spend another dime to add talent before the deadline hits.

But could a “temporary lifesaver” agreed upon by Major League Baseball and the MLBPA jog some loose change from the pockets of the Pohlad family? That’s what commissioner Rob Manfred hopes, after the MLB announced that they are taking $75 million out of the luxury tax pool and using it to subsidize teams that have taken revenue hits via regional television deals that have gone sour.

Teams sweating finances because of their reduced TV revenue because of their RSN agreements being dropped or lowered got a temporary lifesaver this week when the union agreed to permit commissioner Rob Manfred to distribute about $75 million from their luxury tax proceeds to teams in need, maxing out at $15 million for individual teams.

“We believe this agreement should positively affect the player market by softening the impact of revenue declines, by increasing the number of clubs who have monies to spend, and by undermining the ability of clubs to weaponize recent developments in RSN markets,” the union said in a memo to players, according to The Athletic.

Bob Nightengale – USA Today Sports

Should this news give Twins fans hope?

So, these subsidies are meant to make open up the trade deadline floodgates a little bit. Some teams will get as $15 million. We do not know how much the Minnesota Twins are set to receive, though.

The Twins are 4.5 games behind the Cleveland Guardians for 1st place in the American League Central. Meanwhile, the Kansas City Royals are playing well and nipping at the Twins’ heels, just two games behind them.

A quick peak at the Wildcard standings shows Minnesota clinging to the No. 2 WC. The Royals hold down WC3 and the Red Sox, Mariners and Rays are all within shouting distance. In other words, there is still a lot to be decided in the AL between now and game 162.

Will the MLB’s new TV revenue subsidy change the minds of the Pohlads? Well, that is literally why this money is being doled out, so you’d sure hope so. At the same time, we don’t know how much out of the $15 million they will get and I’d be 0% shocked to see them pocket whatever welfare the league hands over. We will know one way or another in about 36 hours.

Twins Aren’t the Only MLB Team Cutting Payroll and Blaming TV Revenue https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/minnesota-twins-texas-rangers-use-tv-uncertainty-to-cut-payroll/ Sat, 09 Dec 2023 22:24:02 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=45559 The Minnesota Twins came out last month and announced to the fanbase and the baseball world that they will be cutting payroll for the 2024 season, due to the uncertainty involving how they will recoup $65ish million in TV revenue without Bally Sports paying them to broadcast games.

Texas Rangers cutting payroll too

Recently, we found out they aren’t the only MLB team using payroll slashing practices to ease stress on their 2024 pocketbook. It turns out the Texas Rangers – whose games are also broadcast on TV by Bally Sports — are unlikely to pay top starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery for the same reason.

Over half of Major League Baseball has Bally Sports as their TV broadcasting partner. While the Twins contract with Diamond Sports (Bally’s parent company) expired after last season, it’s expected they will drop all contracts with pro sports teams after the 2024 MLB season, due to their ongoing bankruptcy.

Related: Jorge Polanco, Max Kepler Drawing More Trade Interest, as Twins Wait…

I’d be hard-pressed to believe the Twins and Rangers are the only MLB organizations tweaking future roster and staff payroll decisions based on future television revenue uncertainty. There will be others, though most won’t say it publicly like these two have.

Do not accept Minnesota Twins excuses, no matter how many other teams use the same ones.

But this news doesn’t vindicate the Pohlads. There’s no need to make excuses for the Twins or other billionaire MLB owners. Why do the business people operating these organizations choose to harm their relationship with local fan bases just to save a quick buck in the short-term?

Having $50+ million in flux seems like a lot, until you factor in all the numbers. Like the numbers showing major professional U.S. sports teams jump $100s of millions in value every year, lately.

Related: TV Blackouts Will Not Exist in Minnesota Twins New Broadcasting Age

The Minnesota Twins latest valuation (Statistica) has them worth about $1.4 billion, more than double what they were worth less than 10 years ago in 2014 ($605 million) before they moved into Target Field, which local citizens paid half of.

Statistic: Minnesota Twins franchise value from 2002 to 2023 (in million U.S. dollars) | Statista
Find more statistics at Statista

In all reality, the Twins would be worth more than what this valuation says. According to Sportico, the average MLB team is worth closer to $2.5 billion. The Kansas City Royals sold for $1 billion in 2020 and the Mets went for $2.4 billion the same year. The Marlins sold in 2018 for $1.4 billion.

But tell MLB teams like the Twins and Rangers that they will have to work a little harder to make their standard $50-100 million in TV revenue for a season or two and owners start panicking and cutting payroll, among other things. Classic.

Twins Plan to Upgrade Roster via Trade and Free Agency, Despite Payroll Cuts https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/twins-plan-to-upgrade-roster-via-trade-free-agency/ Fri, 10 Nov 2023 02:24:34 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=44867 The Minnesota Twins announced their plan to cut payroll next season by about $30 million, turning the heads of fans and media members across Twins territory.

Not only did they decide to slash their 2024 player budget by more than 10%, but they came out and announced it as if fans would pity them due to TV money they may not make next season.

Twins plan to upgrade roster externally

But that doesn’t necessarily mean Derek Falvey plans to stand pat this offseason or that next summer’s Twins will fill roster holes with unproven prospects. Or at least, that’s what they are trying to sell us.

Related: Twins Mulling Center Field Insurance Plans for Byron Buxton

According to Bob Nightengale Jr (Star Tribune), the front office plans to add a center fielder, first baseman and starting pitcher via trade and/or free agency.

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. — The Twins may have to be more creative to fulfill their offseason wish list considering their reduced payroll for next season, but there are areas of the roster they plan to upgrade.

Trades could be an early focus to create some additional space in their budget before turning to the free agent market, one agent predicted, but here are three positions the Twins will look for external help:

  • Center Field
  • First Base
  • Starting Pitcher
Bobby Nightengale Jr – Star Tribune

In his report, which dropped Thursday evening, Nightengale goes deeper into the reasoning for why the Twins will look for external options to upgrade three of their most pressing needs, this offseason, but none of the details shed a lot of new light on the team’s offseason plans.

Related: Twins Jorge Polanco Drawing Trade Interest from Mariners, Blue Jays

Though Bobby Jr did get Falvey to admit that they are not looking for one-for-one replacement for Sonny Gray, who is expected to sign elsewhere.

Falvey didn’t commit to adding a starting pitcher that could be considered a one-for-one replacement for free agent Sonny Gray.

“We do feel we walk into this offseason with maybe a better overall pitching group than we’ve walked into any of our recent offseasons,” Falvey said.

Buckle Up, Baseball is Back. https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/buckle-up-baseball-is-back-minnesota-twins/ Thu, 10 Mar 2022 20:32:25 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=38200 It wasn’t easy and took far too long. Even today, drama lingered through the final moments. But after an attempted NFT Twitter takeover and a Survivor-style voting process, Major League Baseball owners and the Players’ Association (MLBPA) came to terms on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement that ends the lockout.

Buckle Up

Because we’ve already been deprived months-worth of offseason processes and given the fact that baseball should be well into spring training, there’s a huge rush of action that needs to happen and no time for said action to take place.

Teams are expected to report for spring training as quickly as tomorrow morning, league transactions could start within hours and Opening Day is expected to be April 7. One team that optioned not to make any moves before the lockout began, the Minnesota Twins, should be one of the busiest teams in the coming hours.

But as we’ve learned… that doesn’t mean they will.

MLB Rule Changes 2021: The Good, Bad and Ugly https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/mlb-rule-changes-2021-the-good-bad-and-ugly/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/mlb-rule-changes-2021-the-good-bad-and-ugly/#respond Tue, 16 Feb 2021 19:09:55 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=33308

The MLB and its Players’ Union finalized what appears to be the last piece of the puzzle in getting the 2021 baseball season underway. The health and safety protocols were recently agreed on and they are extremely strict. Let’s take a look.

For players, there will be no indoor gatherings of 10 or more people (away from the park) during the season. No indoor dining at restaurants. Clubbing is subject to discipline by the league and can include suspension or salary loss.

The MLB adopted some of last year’s rules and implemented them into this season. Those rules include the return of 7-inning double headers and the infamous extra inning rule (runner starts extra innings on 2nd base).

The Universal DH will NOT be included in the 2021 season. With pitchers and catchers reporting this week to their respected facilities in Florida or Arizona, it’s time to scan and survey the good, the bad and the ugly of baseball’s rule changes, en voyage to 2021.

The Good

One of the positive reported health and safety additions will be the “Kinexon Contact Tracing Device”, already in use by the NBA and NFL. Players and staff will wear this contact tracing device and it will provide the proactiveness baseball needs to help them complete a 162 game schedule.

Seven-inning double headers are another constructive idea for 2021. You can fit two baseball games in less than four and a half hours! How about that! If I’m gonna commit to watching four hours of baseball, let’s get the best bang for our buck.

The Bad

How did the extra inning rule pass but not the universal DH? This is where baseball doesn’t make sense and why I talk about the rigidities they can’t seem to shake. Nobody wants to watch pitchers hit .058? Baseball wants to intensify excitement, right?

Adding another hitter to National League lineups offers just that. Selfishly however; I truly believe, had the universal DH passed again for 2021, Nelson Cruz would not be a Minnesota Twin anymore. Unselfishly, hitting would become much more valuable in the NL leading to the further payout for players and more fun for baseball fans.

The Ugly

Major League Baseball’s new extra-innings rule, in which a baserunner is automatically placed at second base with no outs to start every half-inning, is a travesty. I thought I’d never see something worse than the NHL shootout.

In a 60-game season, fine, I get it, but over 162 games? A sacrifice bunt and sac fly can win you an extra inning baseball game. Let that marinate for a second.

At least, if the MLB was going to create this rule, have the team coming up to bat start with one out. Don’t feed me the ‘it’s electric’ and ‘it avoids the 17 inning game’. I’m not buying it.

Until the NBA passes the four point shot, this is the worst rule in the pro four sports.

Minnesota Twins Not Expecting Any Players to Opt-Out of Reporting to Camp https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/minnesota-twins-not-expected-any-players-to-opt-out-of-reporting-to-camp/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/minnesota-twins-not-expected-any-players-to-opt-out-of-reporting-to-camp/#respond Tue, 30 Jun 2020 01:45:27 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=26585

Players around Major League Baseball are reporting to their respective cities for the start of June 1 “camp” (or whatever you call it), in prelude to the pandemic-shortened 60-game season that starts later the same month. Well, most players are. There are a few guys around the league who are opting not to play in 2020. Reportedly though, the Minnesota Twins aren’t expecting anyone from their roster to opt-out.

There was a story written recently about the Buxton family expecting another baby, and how that might play into his decision to play in 2020. Other players on the club have expressed concerns, too.

Add in the seriousness of the issues Miguel Sano dealt with last week, back in the Dominican Republic… and Twins fans are feeling pretty relieved to hear that all members of the 2020 Bomba Squad will be arriving in the Twin Cities this week.

Minnesota Twins Broadcast Notes

If you are wondering where you will watch Minnesota Twins games this season, you’d better call and be sure your cable provider offers your local Fox Sports North Regional Channel because it looks like that’s where all 60 games will be televised.

No Paycuts, Layoffs or Furloughs for Pohlads

Sherry covered it for us, but “cheap” hasn’t been the adjective to best-describe the Pohlad family over the last couple of years. That especially stands true over the last few months.

Sure, they and the Minnesota Twins organization can afford to bear the financial burden of the Coronvirus pandemic, but that doesn’t mean they have to. Many around sports and on top of other businesses around the world, are facing the same decisions as the the Pohlads… and are going about things in a much different manner.

I will happily applaud them for this move and you should to.

The Major League Baseball season is less than a month away and the Minnesota Twins are primed and ready to, not only repeat as AL Central champs, but to win the 2020 World Series! Don’t tell that to Buster Olney, though.

Twins fans know what this team is capable of. After winning 101 games in 2019 and hitting a league-record 307 home runs, optimism is high. That’s not the case everywhere, though.

This unknown “analyst” named Buster Olney, from a small unproven outlet called ESPN, isn’t even considering the Twins as World Series contenders. Here’s a blip from a blog he recently wrote on the subject. There’s no chance this guy makes it big.

“These are the teams that are especially dangerous in a shortened season: the teams saturated with roster depth and strong bullpens. The Los Angeles Dodgers. The New York Yankees. The Tampa Bay Rays, who should be a favorite among the gamblers.”

Buster Olney on teams he thinks have the best shot at the World Series.

via GIPHY

SO ORIGINAL, BUSTER…

Pandering to the New York and LA markets is real original… and it isn’t going to win this guy (whoever he is) any fans in Minnesota or other starving markets around the country. Ogling over the likes of the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, and the cute Tampa Bay Rays (just to throw people off the scent) is the most generic of moves.

Reminder: The Rays barely made the playoffs in 2019 and they play in such a dilapidated stadium, you have to walk up stairs just to use a bathroom. Yet, they’re the only “Moneyball” style team that competes regularly. They’re an easy feel good team to toss in there.

To actually place the Rays ahead of the Twins is completely asinine. They have similar odds in Vegas, but are a way better team on paper and play in a division that the AL East would use as toilet paper. Tampa might not even make the playoffs. They have to play half of their 60-game season vs the Yankees, Red Sox and Blue Jays. The Twins might have to worry about 10 games vs Cleveland, if they’re cheap front office stops trading their best pitchers away (they won’t).

THE ODDS TELL THE TRUTH

In fact, since we posted that blog on World Series odds last week, betting sites have started to cool on the Rays. As it stands tonight, the Twins remain where they have been since before the pandemic hit. They have the third best odds (+1600), to win the 2020 World Series (according to PointsBet).

The Rays on the other hand, come in fourth at +2200. That’s a movement of +400. Bettors aren’t stupid (most of them). It’s going to be difficult for Tampa to make the postseason in 2020 and that’s why their line is moving the wrong way (or right way depending on how you look at it).

Olney’s statement, claiming the Rays have a strong bullpen, and backhandedly saying the Twins don’t, doesn’t make sense.

The Rays have a great bullpen! With it being graced by the likes of Diego Castillo and Adam Kolarek. But the Twins were better when it came to the later innings on the mound.

Whether it was Tyler Duffey (5-1, 2.50 ERA, 12.8 K/9, 1.006 WHIP) in the middle innings, Trevor May (5-3, 2.94 ERA, 6.0 H/9, 1.073 WHIP) or Sergio Romo holding leads late or Taylor Rogers (30 SV, 1.000 WHIP, 11.7 K/9) closing the door…. the Twins have a SUPERB bullpen to work with.

Throw in the MLB-ready arms of Devin Smeltzer, Randy Dobnak, and Lewis Thorpe, all of whom can start or throw out of the pen, and you have a very formidable staff. Don’t forget about Homer Bailey, Rich Hill, and Jhoulys Chacin in bullpen roles, if need be.

CAN THE RAYS EVEN MAKE THE PLAYOFFS?

Let’s be honest… when the MLB announced their plan to play a regional schedule, the Rays got fucked. Not only will they have to face off against not the stacked AL East, as mentioned earlier, but they’re NL matchup is one of the most difficult too. The National League East holds the Braves, Mets and reigning champion, Washington Nationals. Those teams hold three of the four best odds, to win the World Series in the National League (according to pointsbet above).

Now sure, this season is going to be more of a sprint than the traditional marathon, but I am SICK of national sports media ignoring the successes Minnesota sports have seen recently. We are no longer ‘flyover country’ and deserve to be discussed in the best possible light.

Come at my, Olney. I didn’t hear no bell.

America’s Pastime is finally back on the calendar! As we have been discussing the last few days, this abnormal season will come with some strange caveats. Whether it is the combining of divisions or the National League using designated hitters, there are a ton of quirks to unwrap.

Yet, two interesting rules deserve a deeper look. Both could alter the game as we know it, for better or worse.

  1. No Spitting!
  2. Games going into extra innings will begin with a runner on 2nd base.

NO SPITTING

This new “rule” both makes sense, and doesn’t, all at once. It makes sense because of COVID-19, duh! The whole reason this season is shortened (outside of the MLBPA-MLB negotiation debacle) is because of the global pandemic.

We knew precautions would to be taken to minimize the spread of COVID-19. To what extent, however, was relatively unknown. The Athletic , however, obtained the MLB’s proposal on health and safety regulations back in May.

Most of what was agreed to, makes sense. From daily temperature checks to multiple tests per week. However, some things are more borderline. The first controversial rule change surrounds… spitting.

How?

Baseball players are notorious for spitting. Whether it’s tobacco, which is something the league has been trying to curb anyway (good luck), or if it’s just innocent sunflower seeds… don’t do it. You cannot purposefully launch anything from your mouth. That includes plain spit, without an added projectile.

How is the MLB going to enforce this? Spitting is part of baseball. Yes, even if you think it’s disgusting, Karen.

With baseball being one of the few sports where there is minimal proximity between players, outside of the batter’s box, it doesn’t quite make sense. What if you are the pitcher? You are 60-plus feet from any other player, prior to the pitch. So does spitting on the grass really spread the disease? No.

We aren’t even sure what type of punishment will be handed down, to those who do spit (god forbid). How will they monitor each individual during a game? It is a massive overreach to think putting it in the protocols will curb it. Good luck, Manfred. You’ve been spitting in the proverbial face of baseball fans since you became commissioner.

RUNNER ON 2ND TO START EXTRA INNINGS

Now we are talking! A concept that has floated around the league for years is finally coming to fruition. A runner will start on 2nd base now, during extra innings. Even if it is just for a single season, I’m here for it.

With the regular season starting up on either July 23rd or 24th and ending around September 27th, they have to cram 60 games into 67 days. Not ideal, especially when Mother Nature will likely cause delays, plus some unconditioned players will become fatigued faster. I don’t need to watch another Twins-Red Sox game go 17 innings…

WILL A RUNNER ON SECOND BE EFFECTIVE?

I am ecstatic for this! The Twins have Byron Buxton (*vigorously knocks on wood*). His blazing speed should help end games quickly. Even if he isn’t at 100% or rules stop him from being “the guy”, the Twins have others who could be utilized for their speed, as well.

This rule has been implemented in the minors, for a few seasons, and some have found it to be anti-climactic. Craig Calcaterra of Yahoo! Sports mentioned, that it often leads to the first batter just bunting the runner over, before being driven in by a sacrifice fly. This is great, if you have to be somewhere or have to wake up early… but not the best for those who love the strategy behind the game.

Think of this season as a test run, for the rule. Back in 2017, commissioner Rob Manfred doubted the “runner on 2nd” rule would ever be used in the MLB. Now if this experiment goes well, expect players to lobby for it in the upcoming CBA negotiations.

LET ‘ER RIP!

Sure, spitting isn’t a necessary part of the game. But it does impact how players prepare and has become engrained in some of their routines. As for the runner on second to start extras? Let ‘er rip!

The Twins are poised for greatness, in 2020. I am absolutely game. Especially if it brings the Twin Cities its first major championship since the 1991 Twins.
