No, it’s not a pitcher. But it’s still somewhat of a blockbuster. They partnered with the Texas Rangers, dealing away Mitch Garver in exchange for 27-year-old starting shortstop, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and the #15 prospect in their organization, 24-year-old (AA) RHP, Ronny Henriquez.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa was a solid hitter in 2021, posting a .271 average to go with his 53 RBI. Just as importantly, he was available, playing in 153 games. But the Twins didn’t trade for him because of his offense. Kiner-Falefa is one of the top defensive shortstops in the MLB, and should give head coach, Rocco Baldelli, what he hade hoped to have in Andrelton Simmons last season.

If IKF can be as available to the Minnesota Twins as he was last season for the Rangers, and prove to be the lockdown defender he’s touted as, this would be a great start to their shortened offseason. But it’s far from over… hopefully.

Read more on AA pitcher, Ronny Henriquez here.

Mitch Garver Claims to be Recovering Well After Successful “Groin Contusion” Surgery https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/mitch-garver-claims-to-be-recovering-well-after-successful-groin-contusion-surgery/ Wed, 02 Jun 2021 18:21:49 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=35233

A catcher’s worst nightmare happened to Mitch Garver last night. It was the bottom of the 7th inning and the Minnesota Twins were trying to comeback on the Baltimore Orioles. That’s probably what Mitch was concerned with at the time. But moment’s later… his world was turned upside down.

Trey Mancini swung at a 3-0 fastball up and in, foul tipping it in one-hop fashion directly into Mitch Garver’s nut cup, which (for educational purposes) holds his testicles. Any shot to the groin hurts but the cup is supposed to eliminate any serious damage from being inflicted.

Unfortunately for Mitch, that wasn’t the case on this dark Tuesday night. After being bent over in pain for what felt like an eternity, Garver was helped off the field and rushed to the hospital in Baltimore, where he required immediate surgery. I can’t find any video clips of the fateful foul tip (thankfully) but the photo below (2nd tweet) gives a very detailed and graphic explanation of what a “groin contusion” is.

This morning, we got an update via Mitch Garver’s Instagram account and he claims to be “recovering well”.

I appreciate his optimism.

Rocco Baldelli said last night after the game that he didn’t think Mitch would be catching any games for awhile. After seeing the photo evidence and hearing about Garver’s “successful surgery”, I’d have to agree.

The Twins will play in honor of Mitch and his fallen soldiers tonight, in what feels like a must-win game for a team desperate to show life.

Twins Activating Kepler and Garlick; Demoting Jeffers and Rooker https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/twins-activating-kepler-and-garlick-demoting-jeffers-and-rooker/ Fri, 30 Apr 2021 17:16:48 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=34780

The Minnesota Twins are going to announce some pretty big moves today. According to Aaron Gleeman (The Athletic), Max Kepler and Kyle Garlick are being activated off of the COVID-19 list. Being sent to St. Paul in return, will be (C) Ryan Jeffers and (OF) Brent Rooker.

Garver vs Jeffers

It’s great to have Max back and nobody loves anything as much as the Minnesota Twins love Kyle Garlick vs left handed pitching. But no Ryan Jeffers means Mitch Garver is about to be our full-time catcher, with Willians Astudillo as an emergency backup. That’s bold, especially given Garver’s depressing .172 BA, .644 OPS and -0.67 offensive win probability added.

Then again, Jeffers didn’t push Garver like Falvine had hoped. He hit a sad .147 with a .393 OPS while with the big league club to start this 2021 season. In his defense, Jeffers faced a lot more right handed pitchers than what Garver did. Jeffers has taken just six plate appearances all season vs lefties (31 vs RHP). Garver’s has taken to the batter’s box 31 times vs LHP and RHP, respectively.

Both Twins’ catchers bat right-handed and both have been worse in their careers vs right-handed pitchers, just like most righty vs righty splits in baseball history. In fact, Jeffers has been far worse (.280 vs LHP / .203 vs RHP) vs lefties than Garver (.268 vs LHP / .240 vs RHP), over the course of their careers.

Good news?

But hey, there’s some good news. Mitch may have gone hitless in the 14 at-bats (5 games) prior to Monday, but he is coming off of a 2/5 game vs Cleveland where he dropped two homers and drove in three runs. The decision to activate Garlick, the (vs) lefty specialist, and kick Rooker down to AAA was made easy by Brent’s .106 batting average and .375 OPS.

Gleeman is reporting a few other moves that will be made official this afternoon as well.

Twins Sign Buxton, Berrios + Others Before Deadline; Non-Tender Rosario and Wisler https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/twins-sign-buxton-berrios-others-before-deadline-non-tender-rosario-and-wisler/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/twins-sign-buxton-berrios-others-before-deadline-non-tender-rosario-and-wisler/#respond Thu, 03 Dec 2020 01:58:19 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=31653 Well, the non-tender deadline has come and gone and the Minnesota Twins have made their decisions on who will be offered contracts and who will not. The Twins have non-tendered Eddie Rosario (not a surprise) and Matt Wisler (surprise), who had a spectacular 2020.

Contracts Offered

Everyone else who was due to be offered a contract by today’s non-tender deadline has been offered, other than Rosario and Wisler, who were non-tendered. The only person left to sign his offer sheet is Taylor Rogers. Some of those deals are for major contributors to this team, including Byron Buxton, Jose Berrios and Tyler Duffey.

The values these players have signed for are below. We don’t appear to be heading for any major arbitration disagreements but we’ll obviously have to keep an eye on what happens between the front office and Taylor Rogers.

*UPDATE (Dec. 3, 9 AM): Taylor Rogers and the Twins have come to a contract agreement, per Dan Hayes (The Athletic). The table below has been updated accordingly.

PlayerStatusContract
Jose BerriosSigned$6.1M
Byron BuxtonSigned$5.125M
Mitch GarverSigned$1.875M
Tyler DuffeySigned$2.2M
Caleb ThielbarSigned$700K
*Taylor RogersSigned$6M
Eddie RosarioNon-TenderedFree Agency
Matt WislerNon-TenderedFree Agency
Star Tribune – Phil Miller

Now that these deals are signed and Eddie Rosario + Matt Wisler are set for free agency, the Minnesota Twins and other teams around the MLB will sift through some of the surprise non-tender free agents, and continue to fill out their rosters.

We’ll be here with any news that drops for the Twins.

Twins Lose Buxton and Garver to IL in Flurry of Thursday Roster Moves https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/twins-lose-buxton-and-garver-to-il-in-flurry-of-thursday-roster-moves/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/twins-lose-buxton-and-garver-to-il-in-flurry-of-thursday-roster-moves/#respond Thu, 20 Aug 2020 22:13:06 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=28958

The Minnesota Twins have made multiple roster moves ahead of their game against the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday night. Byron Buxton and Mitch Garver are heading to the Injured List. But who is replacing them?

BUXTON CAN’T CATCH A BREAK

Just when CF Byron Buxton starts to get hot he lands himself on the IL. While Buxton’s play is brilliant, his durability leaves him in the brittle category. Even though Buxton’s average is still below .225 for the year, it seemed like he was finding his groove at the plate. Obviously the biggest loss without Buxton comes on defense. We should see Jake Cave and Lamonte Wade Jr. (recalled due to the Buxton injury) get a lot more playing time.

Mitch Garver was also put on the 10 day IL, Garver is suffering from something called a right intercostal strain. If this was last year I would be panicking right about now, but let’s be honest Garver has been pretty bad this year. He is hitting just .154 with just 1 HR and 2 RBI’s. Hopefully Alex Avila can contribute something on offense, otherwise the bottom of this lineup could be very dismal.

The Twins did make a pretty eye opening move by selecting the contract of C Ryan Jeffers. Jeffers has a career stat line of .296 avg, 180 H, 21 HR, and 82 RBI’s in just two full season in the Minors. He ranks as the 6th best prospect in the Twins organization according to MLB.com. And it looks like Jeffers will make his major league debut tonight!

SO LONG THORPE

It is also worth mentioning that P Lewis Thorpe was finally optioned to the Twins alternate site in St. Paul. He should have been optioned to go play legion ball in the middle of no where. Apologies to any Twins fan who had to watch him pitch.

The Twins are back in action tonight at 6:10 pm against the Brewers, as they try to win the series. Jose Berrios (1-3, 5.92 ERA) will face off against Brandon Woodruff (1-1, 3.16 ERA).

Bombas. Bullpen. Win. Repeat. The Minnesota Twins finished their series against the Cleveland Indians in similar fashion to how the first three games played out. Thanks to a Mitch Garver homerun and more brilliance from Tyler Clippard and the bullpen, the Twins sent Cleveland home with a 3-1 loss. The Twins improved to 7-2 on the season. Cleveland fell to 5-5, and dropped to 2.5 games behind the Twins in the AL Central.

MORE QUICK SCORING

The Twins wasted no time getting runs on the board. Max Kepler doubled to lead off the game, and scored on a Jorge Polanco single in the bottom of the first. Mitch Garver extended the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning with his first Bomba of the year.

After Kepler doubled again in the bottom of the third, Nelson Cruz drove him in with an RBI single to give the Twins a 3-0 lead. That was all the scoring the Twins would need.

CLIPPARD IN CONTROL

Tyler Clippard opened for the Twins, something he did three times last year for the Indians. Clippard threw the first two innings and did not allow a baserunner. After Clippard departed, Devin Smeltzer followed with a scoreless third inning, but did give up a run in the fourth. The inning could have been bigger for Cleveland if not for an absolute missle launched by Eddie Rosario to second base to nab Francisco Lindor trying to stretch out an RBI single.

After an absolutely bizarre delay in the fifth inning, Matt Wisler finished the fifth and cruised through the sixth. The Twins then went to the usual suspects to finish off the game. Tyler Duffey handled the seventh with ease. Trevor May clamped down the eighth, and Sergio Romo slammed the door to pick up the save in the ninth to pick up the save.

BAILEY TO IL: POPPEN RECALLED

The Twins placed Homer Bailey on the 10 day IL shortly before first pitch with right biceps tendinitis and recalled Sean Poppen. Bailey won his first start with the Twins, and was initially supposed to start today.

ODORIZZI TO FACE HITTERS MONDAY

Jake Odorizzi continues to make progress toward rejoining the rotation after a back injury delayed his debut. Odorizzi made it through a bullpen session Thursday, and will face live hitters tomorrow according to Betsy Helfand.

PIRATES COMING TO TOWN

The Twins welcome the Pittsburgh Pirates to Target Field tomorrow for the start of a home and home series. The first two games of the four game series will be played at Target Field. Veteran Derek Holland (0-0, 3.18 ERA) will pitch for Pittsburgh. As of now the Twins have not named a starter for tomorrow’s game, suggesting it may be another bullpen day.

Also, for the record, the Twins need to wear the baby blue uniforms EVERY SINGLE GAME.

After New Contract, Mitch Garver Will Remain the Most Underpaid Catcher in Baseball https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/after-new-contract-mitch-garver-to-remain-the-most-underpaid-catcher-in-baseball/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/after-new-contract-mitch-garver-to-remain-the-most-underpaid-catcher-in-baseball/#respond Wed, 04 Mar 2020 16:43:13 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=22364

MLB pre-arbitration is the worst. NFL rookie contracts can suck too, depending on your position. Running backs are often beyond their prime by the time their rookie deal is over. But nothing beats the arbitration system in the MLB.

Mitch Garver is the latest Twin to feel the wrath of pre-arbitration… and catchers seem to take it harder than other positions. They just take longer, on average, to get to the MLB. Garver was one of the best catchers in the league last season, hitting .273 with 31 HR, 67 RBI, 70 R, .995 OPS and a 4.0 WAR. but his minimum salary for 2020 (thanks to pre-arbitration guidelines) is just about $560K.

The Twins are nice enough to give him a little extra, on top of that minimum. They outbid Spotrac’s estimate of $580K too. The $620K that Doogie is reporting, will make Garver the 38th-best-paid catcher in Major League Baseball.

For once, this isn’t me calling the Twins cheap. You play the cards you’re dealt and you do what is best for your organization. They didn’t even have to give Mitch the extra $60K they did.

I’m calling the system broken. At 30 years old, Garver will enter his first year of arbitration eligibility in 2021. I put his number at around $5 million. Gary Sanchez got $5M from the Yankees this season, in his first year of arbitration. Last season, Sanchez trailed Garver in BA, OPS, ans WAR, but had more RBI and more HR. Willson Contreras took $4.5M, to avoid arbitration with the Cubs, and his stats are even closer to Garver’s.

Garver has played for 2.5 seasons already and would demand about $10 million+ on the open market, if you look at the other catcher contracts around the league. Yet, for one more season he’ll be paid like a backup and IF he has another great year, he’ll make about half of what he is worth in 2021. Then, he’ll fight with the Twins for three consecutive offseasons, trying to boost his pay up to market value, until the arbitration court system finally releases him at age 33…

According to FanGraphs, there were 5 catchers last year ages 33+, who had a 1.0 WAR or higher. By the time Garver can be paid, the numbers say his baseball career will have seen its best days. So, who is going to pay him when he is eligible?

Baseball has some shit to fix.

Sitting one spot from the top of the American League with a record of 32-16, you would be hard pressed to find a problem that needs attention for our Minnesota Twins. Luckily for Rocco Baldelli’s club, we have come across one issue that most ball clubs would love to have…

We have too many hot bats to fit into the lineup.

[/et_pb_code][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.22.7″]

If you’ve been watching these boys, you don’t need me to break down every hot hitter. And if you haven’t been watching this historic start, then you should WAKE THE FUCK UP …..before your Mother has yet another reason to be disappointed in you.

But lets take a look at a starting lineup and the players left over.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_code _builder_version=”3.22.7″]

[/et_pb_code][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.22.7″]

Geez, what a stacked group of young men. You could argue that all of the names on that list are everyday players, except for maybe Astudillo. Once healthy, Cruz and Garver need to play everyday. Cruz was signed with the intent to be your everyday DH and gets paid the big bucks to do so. And Garver only holds the team’s second-best batting average at .329 while still standing 3rd (in this ridiculously powerful lineup) in HR’s with 9.

The Turtle” is a fan favorite, who can rake the ball, play beautifully just about anywhere, and never strikes out (but swings at everything). Gonzalez is the ultimate utility man, (who also gets paid the big bucks for it) can’t be kept out of the lineup… He racked up 3 more RBI’s last night with a HR and a 2B. Adrianza will be the oddest man out. He has minor league options still available and isn’t seen as a future cornerstone, but he’s been promising at times this, always playing solid defense and coming up with some big hits.

Finally, there’s a new Venezuelan firecracker that’s exploded onto the scene in the last week.. Luis Arraez is the name, and pissing all over baseballs is his game.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_code _builder_version=”3.22.7″]

[/et_pb_code][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.22.7″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat”]

Just when we thought our lineup couldn’t get any more dangerous, Arraez arrived into Minneapolis with something to say about it.

How the fuck are Falvine and Rocco going to handle Cruz and Garver eventually coming back from injury? Do whatever it takes, I guess. Say goodbye Ehire.. Send down an extra pitcher… just find a way to keep all of these hot hitters in the Twin Cities. The difficult part though no matter who you keep up here, will be getting all 13 hitters enough playing time so they’re not thrown out of sync. There’s nothing a major league hitter hates more than too many off-days. When you’re in a groove, you don’t want anything to fuck with your flow.

How great is it to have 1st-place team problems like this? Instead of talking about firing people, we’re worried about having too many good ones. I’m sure this is an issue that Rocco welcomes with open arms. I mean… you could be a White Sox fan…

After a big win last night but a scary injury to Mitch Garver, the Twins put out some very positive and “sigh of relief” type headlines later this morning.

[/et_pb_code][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.22.7″]

So, Mitch Garver will start out with just a 10-day stint on the disabled injured list. That’s a big deal, given most would have put their money on the reservation being closer to that of the 60-day variety, after this hit yesterday on what should have been a team lifting moment provided by Byron Buxton…

Was this slide fair or foul? I DEEP dove on that last night in this twitter thread:

[/et_pb_code][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.22.7″]

Now, onto what could be much bigger news in the long run…. Miguel Sano is back.

I can’t wait to see him take some of those Paul Bunyan hacks and hit some Big Time bombs for a lineup that would have been lacking that power with Garver on the DL IL and Nelson Cruz struggling with his own injury issues.

Sano won’t be in the starting lineup tonight but even if we don’t get to see that sexy Dominican ass shake on it’s way to the plate tonight…. the hours can be counted down until Miguel is launching 114.7 MPH missiles into the 3rd deck of Target Field.

Eeeeeerrrrrr meeeeerrrrrr geeeeeerrrrrrd that swing….

Despite Injury Purge, is the Twins Season Looking Up? https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/despite-injury-purge-is-the-twins-season-looking-up/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/despite-injury-purge-is-the-twins-season-looking-up/#respond Sun, 06 May 2018 12:57:26 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=9518

When it comes to appearing extremely intoxicated, the last couple weeks of the Twins’ season deserve a gold silver medal.

With that attempt to lighten the mood complete (things might get a little dark here), let’s talk baseball:

After starting off the season 8-5, the Twins played the next 13 games to the tune of a 2-11 record.

As disturbing as that graphic is, Saturday’s victory actually marked the team’s second win in a row and third of their last four. They’ll enter Sunday just a half game back of Ron Gardenhire’s Detroit Tigers for second place in the AL Central. While that accomplishment is certainly nothing to write home about, beggars Minnesotans can’t be choosers.

So, hopefully Minnesota’s very recent on-the-field play, unlike Miguel Sano’s weight goals, are moving back in the right direction. Unfortunately, that’s not the case away from the big league diamond:

Jason Castro’s 10-day DL designation means Mitch Garver will take on the majority of reps at Joe Mauer’s old position. Who’s for the new catcher on the Twins’ roster? Bobby Wilson was acquired via a FA minor-league deal in November of 2017.

Over the course of eight different MLB seasons (324 games), the 35 year-old has a career batting average of .214 (.268 OBP). With all due respect to Wilson, barring some sort of out-of-body experience, I hope he reaches the 330 career contest plateau as part of a different organization.

Unless you’re hosing runners down at second like Yadier Molina, Bobby Boy’s one home run every 47 at-bats coupled with his barely-above .200 batting average isn’t going to cut it:

via GIPHY

Sidebar: Indications are that Castro’s slow start at the plate is attributed to this meniscus issue.

Speaking of not going to cut it, Minnesota’s current team ERA of 5.02 ranks 26th in the majors. For comparison purposes, Ervin Santana’s 2017 ERA closed at an impressive 3.28.

Although the 2x All-Star’s transfer to the 60-Day Disabled List may appear daunting, the headline’s bark significantly outperforms its bite.

The two month hiatus is retroactive to the beginning of the season. Due to that extremely important wrinkle, Santana will be permitted to return from this lingering finger issue on May 28th.

Despite the May eligibility date, according to Paul Molitor, the 35 year-old pitcher’s need for live batting practice sessions prior to his (brief) Minor League assignment, “leaves the first week of June as a more likely landing spot for Santana’s return.

While that would equate to (basically) another month’s time without the reliable right-hander, a certain call-up last week may ease our pain slightly.

The way I see it, despite all of the Twins’ recent pain (literally and figuratively), things easily could have been much more excruciating. First of all, Cleveland’s recent struggles leave them sitting only one game above .500. In addition to that, it’s not like Minnesota still has one of their starting pitching eggs in Phil Hughes’ basket.
