Yet again, the Vikings have lost their top drafted rookie for the season to a torn ACL. And that’s not the only similarity between Mike Hughes’ and Dalvin Cook’s rookie injuries either.

They both happened at the same 27 yard line at US Bank Stadium. 27 yards… I don’t remember, didn’t something happen with Blair Walsh there too? Just kidding, that moment is burned into my memory forever. Anyway, the number 27 isn’t the Vikings’ number.

Many fans and experts alike felt that the loss of Dalvin Cook last year would be too difficult for the Vikings to overcome, yet they ended the season at 13-3 with a very strong rushing attack behind the likes of Latavius Murray and Jerrick McKinnon. In fact, after the Dalvin Cook injury last year, the Vikings only lost 1 more regular season game… with Case Keenum. Too bad Denver can’t say the same…

Will the Mike Hughes injury have the same null effect? Or, will his absence prove more detrimental to the team than losing our starting running back last year?

As we are learning with the Pittsburgh Steelers, running backs tend to be easily replaced. The same cannot be said of a team’s starting nickel cornerback, one of the hardest positions to learn in the NFL, especially with Mike Zimmer’s defense.

Mike Hughes made a strong impact from game one, when he intercepted Jimmy Garoppolo for a touchdown against the 49ers. He won the starting nickel corner position that week, with his strong performance. The struggles of his main competition at the position, Mackensie Alexander, also helped solidify a starting role for him as a rookie. Also, lets not forget the masses calling for Alexander to be traded in the offseason. Good thing that never happened…

There were some growing pains after week one for Hughes though, but the talent was clearly there. Hughes struggled with a few defensive pass interference penalties, but this should have been expected when learning the rules of the NFL.

Mackensie Alexander arguably had his strongest showing this season, as Hughes’ replacement, against the Cardinals. Other than the defensive pass interference penalty against Mackensie, which didn’t seem to be entirely his fault, he showed the potential to live up to his draft position.

Mike Hughes’ injury won’t just effect the Vikings defense, however, as he had become our primary kick returner too and even returned punts during Marcus Sherels’ absence. Mike Priefer has stated that Holton Hill will now become our go-to kick returner. Hill showed some skill, as a returner during the preseason, however not enough was seen from him to make a full judgment. Marcus Sherels’ health will be something to watch as the season progresses, which is an interesting note after yet again, many thought he wouldn’t make the final 53 this year.

All in all I believe Mike Hughes’ absence will affect both the defense and the special teams unit, but like last year, we can overcome the loss of our top rookie due to the immense depth that has been accumulated on this roster.

Thanks Rick.

Too Optimistic? (Week 5): 3 Bold Predictions for Vikings-Eagles https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/too-optimistic-week-5-3-bold-predictions-for-vikings-eagles/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/too-optimistic-week-5-3-bold-predictions-for-vikings-eagles/#respond Sun, 07 Oct 2018 00:51:04 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=11197

Not much has gone as planned this season.

– You’re supposed to make 37 yard field goal to win games.

– You’re supposed to handle the Bills with ease.

– Our offense (with a new QB) was suppose to take a few weeks before they built the rapport they seem to already have.

– We brought back 10 of 11 starters from the best defense in the NFL and upgraded the 11th spot with Sheldon Richardson.

Kyle Brandt of Good Morning Football said it well. The loss of Everson Griffen was similar to the Steelers losing Ryan Shazier. Everson was the defensive leader both on an off the field. There has to be a part of this defense that constantly has their mind with him.

This week, against the (struggling) reigning Super Bowl champion Eagles, is the week we put it all together.

via GIPHY

Vikings run game gets going with 125+ yards rushing as a team:

Dalvin Cook is a game-time decision on whether he will play. I foresee him playing, but still on a limited basis. Dalvin’s limited play combined with Latavius Murray and maybe even some Mike Boone need to get going. The only win we have so far this season, is the only game where as a team we have 100+ yards rushing. This is not a coincidence. This will help us in the passing game and also allow us to have a greater time of possession.

Establishing a running game would also be a boost for an offensive line, that has clearly struggled in the run game. The return of Pat Elflein should help, as he looked pretty good against a stout Rams defensive interior. Hopefully, more time together as a unit assists the offensive line, especially in the run game.

Mike Hughes gets his 2nd career INT:

Mike Hughes’ interception in week one has been the only correct bold prediction for me so far this season. A clear sign that this season isn’t on the right track… yet.

Trae Waynes has been ruled out with a concussion so we should see a lot of Mackenzie Alexander and Mike Hughes. With Xavier Rhodes likely shadowing Alshon Jeffery, Mackenzie Alexander will likely be on Nelson Agholor. I expect Carson Wentz to exploit that matchup, however, there could be a lot of Safety-help with Agholor over the top.

If Mack does sit in the slot with Agholor, it leaves Mike Hughes on a mixture of Jordan Matthews and Kamar Aiken. Zimmer’s newest rookie DB has had some growing pains, but I believe this is the week he takes charge.

Anthony Barr has 2+ sacks:

The Vikings have ruled out both Everson Griffen and Tashawn Bower. That leaves only Danielle Hunter and Stephen Weatherly as the active defensive ends. The Vikings may finally be forced to experiment with Anthony Barr as an edge rusher on Sunday…  out of necessity.

Dropping back in coverage hasn’t worked out too well for Barr so far this season, but that might not be entirely his fault. However, I do foresee his hand in the dirt more often vs the Eagles, or at least more packages featuring 55 as a blitzer.

Barr attacking the QB and recording two sacks would be a big help, not only for the team on Sunday, but also for his potential contact discussions.

The Vikings season is finally upon us! We have waited long enough and deserve for football to finally be here. Every year after our hearts are broken, we ask ourselves: “Why do we get so excited for football season?” Now, we are a day away from the start of the season, and I might spontaneously combust. In my excitement, my mind is running down rabbit holes that no Minnesota sports fan should be allowed in.

WARNING: HEAVY, HEAVY, HEAVY VIKINGS OPTIMISM AHEAD

via GIPHY

I’m about to let my Vikings freak flag hang high! Come along for the ride! Here are my 3 bold predictions for Sunday vs. the Niners:

In his first game, Mike Hughes will get an interception!

Mackenzie Alexander has been ruled “doubtful” for Sunday. This should give Mike Hughes the starting role in the nickel, which will give him a lot of snaps against a team that will have to throw after Jerrick McKinnon, their starting running back, was injured and ruled out for the season. In his preseason action, Hughes looked good, but can that translate when the lights really shine.

Jimmy Garoppolo was the NFL’s poster boy at the end of the season last year, winning all of his starts (5 straight). He also never played a defense quite like the Vikings defense. With one of the best corners in the league on one end in Xavier Rhodes and the very underrated and ever improving Trae Waynes on the other, Garoppolo may try to target the rookie Hughes quite a bit.

Being at US Bank Stadium should also confuse Garoppolo. Not many players have played in an environment like Jimmy will see at The Bank on Sunday. So, if you are going to the game, make sure to be extra loud (but please, not while we are on offense guys!).

Dalvin Cook will get more than 175 all-purpose yards

Dalvin Cook looked good in his first three games last year… really good. Expectations are high that he will quickly return back to form. The offensive line might not be where we want it to be, so screen passes to the running back are a must. He will also be Kirk Cousins’ security blanket.

Many think with the addition of Cousins this is going to become a pass-first offense. Wrong assumption. This team is based on a solid defense and pounding the football in the run game. To add insult to injury, the 49ers were bad against the run last year. Couple that with the suspension of defensive captain Reuben Foster, and Cook is in store for a monster game.

The Vikings will have 10+ sacks

Yeah, you read that right… double-digit sacks! Everson Griffen comes off his injury looking like a savage, tallying at least 4 himself. Welcome to the NFL Mike McGlinchey, the 49ers rookie gets a wake up call having to go against Danielle Hunter. With the addition of Sheldon Richardson, This will allow both of our edge rushers to have less double-teams. Jimmy G will be in big trouble early and often.

Don’t count out Mr Anthony Barr either. He is in a contract year and getting reps at defensive end. This is what many would call, motivation. Mike Zimmer wants to throw things at offenses that they have never seen before. Having Barr at end and George Iloka running all over the field will cause confusion for a QB that has only started just a handful of NFL games.

Final Score prediction: Vikings 31- 49ers 13

Lets cheer loud and proud for our purple and gold this week and come out with a big W. If we can go into Lambeau Field next week after a dominating performance, Rodgers will be crying more than he did after he broke his collar-bone.

Throw Out the Unknowns; Why the Vikings Improving on 13-3 Isn’t Crazy https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/throw-out-the-unknowns-why-the-vikings-improving-on-13-3-isnt-crazy/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/throw-out-the-unknowns-why-the-vikings-improving-on-13-3-isnt-crazy/#respond Sat, 18 Aug 2018 14:28:00 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=10622

“Tough” schedule

Target on our back

Won’t surprise anyone this year

Need time to build cohesiveness on offense

The offensive line won’t block anyone

… pick your reason for why the Vikings won’t improve on, or even match, last season’s 13-3 record.

All of the excuses are out there. But guess what. Is there anything you notice from that list that sticks out? Maybe a running trend throughout?

….. anyone?

They are all hypothetical, mythical figures of our imagination. None of those things can be measured and some of them may not even exist, or if they exist, they may not be relevant enough to cost the Vikings any games.

Let me explain, by looking at our “tough schedule”….

I’m picking on this one because it it’s my favorite. Making a prediction about a season, that hasn’t existed yet, is hard enough. Why would you make a projection, that is based around 31 other team’s predictions? Just because the Vikings are lined up to play a bunch of teams who were good last year, doesn’t mean they will wind up playing that same good team, when this year’s matchup rolls around. The NFL has more turnover in their playoff teams than any other professional league on the American map.

Look no farther than 2016-17 playoff teams to 2017-18 playoff teams. The AFC actually hung steady with 3 of the 6 teams making the playoffs after both seasons (New England, Pittsburgh, Kansas City). The NFC, on the other hand, had only ONE team (Atlanta) that made the playoffs in both ‘17 and ‘18…

So, you can take that argument and ?

The other bullet points and their hypothetical nature are self-explanatory. But, I have an idea:

Instead of trying to pick each game and project matchups that are weeks in the future. Let’s make a record prediction based on things we actually know. Let’s compare last year’s 13-3 team with this year’s and decide how many games better or worse the 2018-19 Vikings are vs last year’s.

The Vikings look a lot like the team from last year in most areas but there are a few important spots that have some new faces, one in particular that we’ve discussed a little bit leading up to the new season….

Cousins is going to prove to be a big upgrade over Case Keenum, as this season goes along. Keenum was propped up by the extreme amount of talent around him. Cousins has all of the pieces (outside of a shaky offensive line) around him to showcase his own baller abilities. But, Kirk Cousins isn’t the only reason why the Vikings should be able to stabilize the ship after the heartbreak in Philly. It’s a combination of a lot of things. But, if there is anything that gets us as excited as the thought of Kirk under center, it’s a healthy Dalvin Cook, who says he’s ready to go whenever the Vikings’ coaches call his number.

Kirk Cousins is a new addition and Dalvin Cook feels like one, but the offense isn’t the only side of the ball that got upgrades this last offseason. Spielman also found a shiny new toy for Mike Zimmer’s defense. Let’s just say that the inside pressure Zimmer’s defense is so well-known for, won’t see any decline after the Sheldon Richardson signing. The former University of Missouri DT, was the only piece the D-Line was missing and is known as one of the best at his position, league-wide.

The additions of Kirk, Sheldon, and a healthy Dalvin are great and what really make this team stick out as improved, compared to last year’s NFC Title-Game participants. However, continued development at key spots should prove vital as well.

We expect Trae Waynes to solidify himself one of the league’s better defensive backs before he heads into his 5th and final year of his Rookie deal.

– Latavius Murray looks like a different and much healthier running back this year.

– Everson Griffin is healthy again, besides a cut leg that got infected recently

– Danielle Hunter is expected to make big strides after signing a big contract extension this offseason.

You could look at a lot of other players and positions, including the rest of the SKOL Patrol Secondary. Many expect Mackensie Alexander to make big strides after another season in Zimmer’s difficult defensive back scheme. With the drafting of Mike Hughes, who is pushing Alexander for the Nickel spot already, has positive reports out of camp that not even the great Xavier Rhodes had at this early stage of his career, the Vikings could have the best secondary in the NFL.

QB’s QB’s WHAT YOU GONNA DO…. ??

Still not convinced? Well, it’s not just the improved talent and continued growth of a good team that we can look at. We also know the make-up of this Vikings team. Look at the professionalism they exude and the determination they have to win. The stability around SKOL Nation hasn’t always been that secure…

There aren’t any distractions. Outside of some offensive line drama early on, it always seems quiet with this team. We don’t go to bed worrying about scandals and legal trouble. No Randy Moss or Percy Harvin personalities to send possible divisiveness throughout the locker room… No last-minute plane trips to the south to convince a quarterback to come out of retirement for the 17th time… I’m not even sure a big party boat ran by Fred Smoot and Darren Sharper pulling in could distract this team from their ultimate goal.

When you can get a professional team all pulling the rope in the same direction (or rowing the boat if you’re a PJ-guy) you’re already weeks ahead of most teams, at this point of the season. Most teams are putting in new game plans from new coaches and/or filling heavy pressure roles with rookies or guys they aren’t sure can handle it. Not here. Positions are filled with above average or better players, outside of the offensive line.

The stability around Kirk Cousins, combined with his own professionalism, will help him get comfortable quickly in a new offense. I expect him to outperform last year EASILY, and possibly have the best season of his young career. The Vikings have a better team now, than they did last year. And, they are hungry. Zimmer and Spielman have done such a good job targeting the right talent with the right heads on their shoulder pads and it is now paying off. The roster is full of guys with big confidence and small egos. Guys who prefer to let their play do the talking and take their job seriously. That’s a very underrated aspect of the Vikings’ leadership.

So, I’ll let the other outlets base their projections on other projections, while trying to also guess when the world will end, when the next ice age will begin, and when the aliens will take over. When you look at what we know about this Vikings’ team, compared to last year’s, there is one thing that is hard to deny…

THEY ARE BETTER.

In fact, I believe they are TWO WINS better than they were last year. So, go ahead and @ me with all of your guessing games. My final record prediction for 2018-19 is…..

15-1.

Vikings’ Top-2 Draft Picks Getting 1st-Team Reps for Different Reasons https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/vikings-top-2-draft-picks-getting-1st-team-reps-for-different-reasons/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/vikings-top-2-draft-picks-getting-1st-team-reps-for-different-reasons/#respond Wed, 15 Aug 2018 14:14:27 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=10600

As we continue to roll through training camp, and eventually through the last 3 preseason games, there are a few things we can now be sure of as we look at our favorite football team.

– Kirk Cousins > Case Keenum

– Vikings Defense > Your Defense

– Mike Zimmer really doesn’t like fighting during training camp. He doesn’t care if it’s your teammate, scrimmaging partner, or your wife on the phone, just keep the fighting away from Zim. I pushed my sister over a vacuum cleaner once when we were kids, and I was grounded for a week. I wonder what happened at Mike’s house when situations like that arose..

The consistent greatness of both our coach and his defense should continue to translate into playoff and Super Bowl-caliber NFL Football, here in the Twin Cities, for years to come. Most of our core that is currently in their prime or entering it, is locked down through at least 2020. Life is pretty good in Vikings’ land right now. But, will it finally lead to that beloved Super Bowl team we’ve been waiting for? I’ll have more on that later this week…

For now, I want to touch on a few things that we DON’T know, as we surge toward the regular season, 2018-19.

– How big of a role will Mike Hughes play in 2018-19?

This question is becoming quite intriguing. Hughes has had a wonderful camp and summer in general, since he slipped to the Vikings at the number 30 pick in the April NFL Draft. So much so, that he is now taking first-team reps at the Nickel spot.

“So what, Eric. Rookie CB’s show up in the NFL every year and stand out.”

Not in Mike Zimmer’s defense, they don’t. Xavier Rhodes, who is now the best CB in the NFL, took a long time to find the right fit in Mike Zimmer’s defensive scheme. Remember the boxing gloves Zimmer had him wearing? And more obviously, because of the newer timeline and lack of proven track record, we all know the struggles Trae Waynes has battled through in his first few seasons in the NFL.

But since the beginning of summer rookie workouts, we’ve heard nothing but positive things about Rookie CB, Mike Hughes. He got a lot of run in the first preseason game vs the Broncos and stuck out in a lot of positive ways. He had open field tackles and good coverage, almost securing an INT in the Bronco end zone, even.

And now, he’s competing in practice with Mackenzie Alexander for that starting Nickel CB spot. Alexander is a high draft pick himself, but like Rhodes and Waynes, struggled in his first two seasons.

But, if Hughes doesn’t win the Nickel job, how often do we see him? If Sherels wins the punter/kick returner role(s), and Hughes can’t secure the nickel, he might be relegated to gunner status on special teams… I don’t know how likely this is to happen. There are two kick returners back, a lot of the time on place kickoffs and injuries obviously like to catch hold of this team.

No matter what happens in 2018-19, however, it seems quite clear that Zimmer and the Vikings are starting to build big plans for Hughes, moving forward. Let’s also remember that Trae Waynes is due a big extension next season and the Vikings don’t look like they will have the money for him right now, especially if they are going to figure out a way to extend Anthony Barr before this season starts.

Here’s a highlight video of Hughes on Saturday:

On the other side of the team, on offense, the Vikings’ 2nd round pick was getting first-team reps as well. Brian O’Neil did play pretty well on Saturday and the coaches are happy with how he is progressing but O’Neil is a former TE and the Vikings hope he ends up being more of a high-ceiling, long-term project, than a guy they need to use right away. He’s also undersized, weighing in at just 290 lbs before the draft, although he reportedly has pushed that up to 300 now.

Because of all of the injuries decimating the Vikings’ offensive line, Brian has been hitting the field with the ones’ a bit at right tackle. The Vikings might also be planning to use his athleticism a bit to work him into the normal game plan as a “swing” tackle for screen passes and outside running plays, that require a lineman to swing behind and around the line, to get out ahead of the ball carrier.

Here is a quick film session thread I ran into on Twitter yesterday that highlights some Brian O’Neil during Saturday’s games:

Mike Hughes (CB): Another TALENTED Vikings 1st Round Pick Who Fell due to Character Concerns https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/mike-hughes-cb-another-talented-vikings-1st-round-pick-who-fell-due-to-character-concerns/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/mike-hughes-cb-another-talented-vikings-1st-round-pick-who-fell-due-to-character-concerns/#respond Fri, 27 Apr 2018 14:23:44 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=9385 First and foremost, #RhodesClosed. Arms up to our All-Pro CB.

But holy shit, some people are comparing Mike Hughes, the Vikings newest cornerback, to Deion Sanders (Paul Allen right now on KFAN as he opens his show) and now Xavier Rhodes officially has a new teammate at what some consider the leagues’ toughest position.

During the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Rick Spielman failed to live up to his wheeling-and-dealing reputation. However, by many indications, the artist formerly still known as “Trader Rick” was able to add to his prestigious résumé of draft choices:

Who is Mike Hughes?

The newest Minnesota Viking was the sixth DB (third CB) taken during Thursday’s inaugural round. Hughes is coming off of a 2017 season that included 4 interceptions, 11 pass break ups, and 4 touchdowns (pick six, kick return (2), punt return). On top of that, for what it’s worth, his team went undefeated:

Here is his Hughes strengths and weaknesses according to the scouting website Walter Football (See the whole report here):

Strengths:

  • Good instincts
  • Excellent athleticism
  • Fast cornerback
  • Runs the route with the receiver
  • Prevents separation
  • Can cover up speed receivers
  • Quick feet
  • Dangerous ball skills
  • Good hands
  • Threat to take the ball away
  • Knows what to do with the ball after making an interception
  • Route recognition
  • Excellent returner on special teams
  • Loose hips to turn to run with speed receivers
  • Recoverability
  • Willing tackler
  • Can play off-man coverage
  • Can play zone coverage
  • Athletic upside

Weaknesses:

  • Undersized
  • A little short
  • Could use more weight
  • Gives up a few passes from not finishing plays
  • Could have issues with big receivers
  • Could be picked on in the red zone
  • Has some off-the-field concerns

Despite the much discussed offensive line needs, the Vikings, outside of Rhodes, have their fair share of questions at corner. While recent reports suggest the Purple will pick up Trae Waynes’ $9 million fifth-year option (2019 season), this addition seems to add immense flexibly to Minnesota’s contract talks with the 2015 first round pick.

Terrence Newman, the ageless wonder, is currently a FA. Whether or not he returns to Minnesota is up in the air like Mackensie Alexander’s ability to play consistent NFL Football.

Nonetheless, according to Mike Zimmer, the Hughes selection wasn’t made to “push” Alexander:

The way I see it, ain’t nothing changed but the day. As always, In Zim We Trust (link: his foundation). If he and the reigning NFL Executive of the Year, Rick Spielman, were on the same page on the Hughes selection (they ALMOST ALWAYS are), Then I’m in too.

Oh, but he has some “baggage,” they say. Whatever. I’m too busy bouncing back and forth between Randy Moss and Dalvin Cook highlights to notice your negativity.

Anywho, now that we’re up to speed on the Purple’s pick, let’s stay woke on our NFC North foes:

BearsLB ROQUAN SMITH (8th overall)

To me, taking the “tackling machine” out of Georgia was a rock solid pick Chicago. It looks like the Bears’ front office improved upon last year’s first round performance:

Packers: CB JAIRE ALEXANDER (18th overall)

A cornerback, eh? Any chance someone noticed a certain Kirk Cousins signing?

LionsC FRANK RAGNOW (20th overall)

Wow. Would you look at that! For once in their nine-lives, the Motor City Kitties actually made a smart move:

The Minnesota product and Arkansas alum has officially made it to the league. Stand the f*ck up, Chanhassen. Congrats!

In conclusion, the 2018 NFL draft is far from concluding. Tonight’s rendition will feature rounds two and three. In the event Spielman doesn’t hit his trusty trade button, it appears our GM will use at least one of today’s two (62nd and 94th overall) selections on an offensive lineman.

You just never know, though. I mean, I’m still kind of amazed that this man would have gone first overall:
