It provided some big moments from J.J. McCarthy and head coach Kevin O’Connell. It also brought a rash of injuries that will prove meddlesome in Week 2.

Although Kirk Cousins will be holding the clipboard, his Atlanta Falcons come to town for a Sunday Night Football matchup in Week 2. Michael Penix Jr. gets another crack at besting McCarthy after losing to him in the National Championship the last time they squared off.

If Minnesota is going to emerge victorious, there are a few areas they must focus in on. Here are three keys for Sunday Night.

Who steps up in absence of MN Vikings starters?

Last week the Minnesota Vikings were without Harrison Smith and Christian Darrisaw. The former was expected, while the latter was something of a surprise. Darrisaw already being ruled out for Week 2 is relatively problematic.

Justin Skule stepped in at starting left tackle for Darrisaw. Only Adam Thielen produced a worse offensive grade per Pro Football Focus. Skule was 44th out of 64 tackles and gave up two sacks. He simply has to be better, and will be in there starting again.

Smith being available would help the defense. Andrew Van Ginkel and Jeff Okudah are both out with concussions. That puts a serious amount of pressure on second-year edge rusher Dallas Turner to shine. Blake Cashman also hit injured reserve earlier this week and Eric Wilson will take over his role. Linebacker Gabriel Murphy will get a shot as well.

There is an opportunity at cornerback, and in the front seven. Can Dwight McGlothern, or an elevated Fabian Moreau, be enough on the outside. Is this the game Turner shows off just how good he can be? Brian Flores needs the help, and multiple players have to provide it.

Containing Penix Jr. a point of emphasis

In Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was 27-of-42 for 298 yards and a touchdown. He also ran the ball six times for 21 yards and a touchdown. That offensive production took place without second wide receiving option Darnell Mooney.

This week Mooney will rejoin Drake London and give the Vikings two wideouts to cover. Running back Bijan Robinson led the receiving game with six receptions for 100 yards and a touchdown as well. Penix Jr. has plenty of weapons to challenge Minnesota’s defense, and he’s shifty as well.

Minnesota got beat by Caleb Williams for 58 yards on six carries. Penix Jr. is probably even a more adept runner, and they can’t allow his ability to create an opportunity to open up the offense. Containing Penix Jr. in the pocket will give the secondary a better chance to hold on despite being down some talent.

Last season Penix Jr. made just a single road start in his five games. U.S. Bank Stadium will be the most hostile environment he has experienced, and the home field advantage can play into the hands of the Minnesota Vikings as well.

Will the wide receivers please step up

It was expected there would be some growing pains in the passing game. McCarthy had never previously started and NFL game, and the Vikings opted against a real dress rehearsal in the preseason. Both Justin Jefferson and Adam Thielen registered drops while Aaron Jones tied for the team lead in receiving yards with 44.

Last season the Falcons were middle-of-the-pack when it comes to receiving yards allowed. There’s an opportunity for Jefferson to make his first mark of the season, and Thielen can help to substantiate why he was brought back to Minnesota.

If McCarthy is going to thrive going forward, it will be because the sum of all parts around him work at a high clip. In Week 1 Jordan Mason and Jones created a nice two-headed monster on the ground. McCarthy threw for just 143 yards, and there weren’t a ton of explosive plays through the air. If Kevin O’Connell can find opportunities for shot plays, the wide receivers need to come through.

Related: Kevin O’Connell Wasted No Time Delivering Legendary Message

Should McCarthy have his first 200-yard passing game of his career on Sunday, it would seem likely that the Minnesota Vikings are in a good position to best the Atlanta Falcons.

Kickoff is set for 7:20 pm for Sunday Night Football. The return of Thielen to U.S. Bank Stadium, and the introduction of McCarthy to home fans, should be a sight to behold.

Vikings Had Another QB Ranked Close to J.J. McCarthy, and it Wasn’t Drake Maye https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/minnesota-vikings-rumors/minnesota-vikings-liked-michael-penix/ Wed, 01 May 2024 23:10:26 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=50338 Draft day is over, and the Minnesota Vikings got their guy in J.J. McCarthy. But as it turns out, McCarthy wasn’t the Vikings’ only “guy”.

Pre-draft rumors pointed to the Vikings having Drake Maye high on Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s draft board, and while that smoke may be legitimate, he wasn’t the only quarterback on Minnesota’s radar.

Minnesota Vikings Also Liked Michael Penix Jr, But Not More Than J.J. McCarthy

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Vikings always had an eye on McCarthy, but they weren’t willing to launch up the draft board to land him. They believed getting McCarthy around the 11th spot delivered great value, but they also may have felt similarly about Michael Penix Jr.

“The Vikings, while they really like J.J. McCarthy, from a value perspective, they weren’t going to be involved in trying to trade up for him. They simply weren’t going to go to 4 or 5. They were making a calculated bet the Giants aren’t going to take him.”

“They were high on Michael Penix. They had J.J. McCarthy and Michael Penix pretty close on the board. J.J. was above Penix, but they were both guys the Vikings would have been comfortable taking at 11.”

The Vikings were right to call the Giants’ bluff, but what no one anticipated was Atlanta taking a quarterback in the first round, less than two months after offering Kirk Cousins over $100 million in guarantees.

Penix went off the clock three picks before the Vikings were scheduled to pick, curiously landing with the Atlanta Falcons. While the front office was high on Penix too, from how Pelissero spins it, the Vikings got the top quarterback available on their draft board when the 10th pick arrived.

Kirk Cousins Stunned by Falcons Drafting Michael Penix Jr at No. 8 in NFL Draft https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/minnesota-vikings-nfl-draft-kirk-cousins-stunned-penix-falcons/ Fri, 26 Apr 2024 02:06:15 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=50168 There were six quarterbacks taken in the first eight picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, but the last of those six was a surprise. Instead of drafting an elite weapon for their new QB Kirk Cousins at No. 8 overall, they shocked the entire football world when they picked Michael Penix Jr, QB out of Washington.

Kirk Cousins stunned by Atlanta Falcons drafting Michael Penix Jr

But it wasn’t just those outside of the Falcons organization who were surprised by the pick. According to Dianna Russini (The Athletic) Kirk Cousins was also “a bit stunned” when he heard Penix Jr’s name called by Roger Goodell.

Kirk thought he was landing in a place where he was finally “the guy”. He spent the last month being paraded around Atlanta like the next king of strip joint chicken wings. Then, at the first possible opportunity, they turn around and draft his replacement.

Cousins’ agent Mike McCarthy confirmed a bit later in the night that, like the rest of us, he and Kirk were gobsmacked by the Falcons’ decision to take Penix Jr and that they had no pre-warning whatsoever, even though a few insiders said Cousins did receive a call or warning at some point.

“Yes, it was a big surprise. We had no idea this was coming. The truth is the whole league had no idea this was coming. We got no heads up. Kirk got a call from the Falcons when they were on the clock. That was the first we heard. It never came up in any conversation.”

Meanwhile, his old team, the Minnesota Vikings, sat tight and waited until the last possible moment to finally initiate a trade. They moved up one spot, to No. 10 overall, and drafted their new franchise QB, JJ McCarthy (Michigan).

Vikings Reportedly Flew Entire Staff to Michael Penix Jr’s Private Workout https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/minnesota-vikings-nfl-draft-rumors-michael-penix-jr/ Thu, 04 Apr 2024 18:31:57 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=49484 The Minnesota Vikings don’t have any interest in Michael Penix Jr., or do they? It’s not the regular season, nor is it the playoffs. It’s officially smokescreen season, and we’ll be here all month, chopping up the latest NFL Draft rumors.

This time of year, it’s all about picking through the latest Vikings news, trying to decipher what’s real and what’s BS. Ultimately, only the Vikings’ front office knows which players Kwesi Adofo-Mensah would legitimately consider targeting at No. 11 or possibly even trading up for.

The list presumably begins with (in no particular order) Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, and JJ McCarthy, but what if there’s a scenario that involves Michael Penix Jr. swapping out one purple jersey for another? They haven’t been able to lock in workouts with every QB target yet but we know the Vikings have privately worked out both McCarthy and Penix Jr.

Entire Minnesota Vikings coaching staff flies to Michael Penix Jr

It all likely depends on the teams picking ahead of the Vikings, where we’ll have to wait until draft day to learn which prospect unexpectedly becomes available. Yet, until April 25, the top decision-makers, including Kevin O’Connell, don’t have a choice but to turn over every stone in their search for Minnesota’s next franchise QB.

That process has now led them to Washington, where the entire staff reportedly held a private meeting/workout with Michael Penix Jr.

Of all the quarterbacks mentioned, Penix is the one least frequently linked to the Vikings. When the Vikings made the trade to acquire an extra first round pick, many assumed this knocked Penix out of the competition. But we’ve since learned that it was actually Houston that pushed hard to swing a deal with Minnesota, not the other way around.

Related: Texans Initiated Trade that Sent No. 23 Overall Pick to Vikings, Not Vice Versa

In turn, it’s very possible the Vikings have kept a keen eye on Penix all along. Which, considering several scouts have raved about Penix, even going so far as to say he has the most arm talent in the 2024 NFL Draft class, including Caleb Williams, it’s not hard to see how the Vikings’ top brass could be infatuated with the former Huskies QB.

“I don’t think he has the arm like Mahomes (discussing Caleb Williams). If you’re talking about elite arm talent in this class, that would be (Michael) Penix. If Caleb can get better at getting rid of the ball quicker, at standing in the pocket and getting it out and get better at diagnosing post-snap movement, I think that’ll be a really good pick.ā€

Anonymous NFL talent evaluator who spoke to The Athletic

Elite arm talent and the Vikings may be able to get him at 11 without selling the farm and the farm’s future offspring? That sounds too good to be true. But did the Vikings come away from Penix’s workout feeling the same way? We may not have our answer until draft day.

Vikings Reportedly Traveled to Seattle for Private Workout with Michael Penix Jr https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/minnesota-vikings-private-workout-michael-penix-jr/ Mon, 01 Apr 2024 19:09:46 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=49390 The Minnesota Vikings have been heavily linked to three of the top four quarterbacks in the upcoming NFL Draft. They’ve reportedly held a private workout in Ann Arbor with Michigan’s JJ McCarthy. They’ve also been linked to LSU’s Jayden Daniels, though that has cooled a bit recently. Then there’s UNC’s Drake Maye, the new favorite pick for those projecting the Vikings’ plans

But it’s been a long time since the Vikings have been seriously linked to any QB prospect outside of those three. Smoke surrounding the other quarterbacks projected to go in the first round 1st round has been pretty much non-existent. For example, USC’s Caleb Williams is a lock at No. 1 to the Bears and all has been quiet on the Bo Nix (Oregon) front, since the Senior Bowl.

And the only recent mention of Washington’s Michael Penix Jr is this clip of Kevin O’Connell on the Pat McAfee show last week, where he seems to strongly insinuate a non-belief in Penix’s accuracy as a passer, something we know KOC sees as a fundamental must-have for any successful quarterback in the NFL.

Minnesota Vikings held private workout with Michael Penix Jr

That was until Jordan Schultz (Bleacher Report) reported on Monday afternoon that the Vikings have already travelling to Seattle, WA and worked out Penix Jr privately.

Of course, it’s not surprising that the Minnesota Vikings are doing their due diligence on a lot of quarterbacks in the draft but, as far as we know, Penix is only the second QB to have a private workout with the Vikings.

We do not know who was at the workout. Both KOC and KWesi were reportedly supposed to be at the private workout that was held at the University of Michigan with JJ McCarthy. That doesn’t mean that was the case for Penix Jr’s, but there is no evidence yet that they weren’t there either.

More on Michael Penix Jr.

As aĀ 23-year-old super senior with the Washington Huskies, Penix threw for 4,903 yards on 363-of-555 passes (65.4 CMP %), including 36 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. They went to the National Championship, and then got boat-raced by the Michigan Wolverines.

Related: Justin Fields Reportedly Had Vikings on Short List of Preferred Trade Destinations

Before he was at Washington, Penix played three seasons at Indiana. His game was much different in Bloomington and his stats reflect that. He’s also dealt with a bevy of injuries throughout his college career, which is probably what’s holding down his draft stock the most.

We Can Safely Cross Michael Penix Jr Off Vikings’ List of QB Draft Targets https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/minnesota-vikings-rumors-oconnell-mocks-accuracy-michael-penix-jr/ Tue, 26 Mar 2024 23:10:04 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=49181 The Minnesota Vikings need a franchise QB. That is not a secret. They hope to find one in the 1st round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Also, not a secret. That’s why most of the what you hear out of Vikings brass this week from the NFL league meetings in Orlando has to be taken with a grain of salt.

But that doesn’t mean everything we heard come out of head coach Kevin O’Connell’s mouth on Tuesday at the NFL League Meetings was worthless. Sure, we still don’t know whether he prefers JJ McCarthy, Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye as the Vikings QB of the future. But… KOC made one comment on the Pat McAfee show today that made it pretty clear who will NOT be the next quarterback to wear purple and gold.

Kevin O’Connell, Vikings appear out on Michael Penix Jr.

While O’Connell was talking about how important accuracy is to the making of an elite NFL quarterback, McAfee jumped in on the head coach with, “So… Michael Penix Jr?” To that, O’Connell stopped… paused… and then repeated himself while chuckling and eventually trailing off, “I think accuracy is the number one trait…”

You have to watch this clip for yourself… it has to be the most caught dead on a question that I’ve ever seen with KOC. I mean, talk about a dead giveaway.

KOC: “I think accuracy is the number one trait that NFL quarterbacks need to have because…

McAfee: “Oh, so Penix…?”

[long pause]

KOC: “I think accuracy is the number one trait… haha [trails off]”

Pat McAfee Show

As a college quarterback, Penix Jr has a lot of experience. He played at Indiana for four years, before transferring for two more seasons at Washington. His completion percentage skyrocketed once he got to Seattle and there’s really no doubting his production.

There have been a lot of smokescreens flying around the NFL Draft world recently, but one quarterback the Minnesota Vikings have not been associated with is Michael Penix Jr. And unless they’re pulling off one of the most elaborate smoke screens in NFL draft history, I think it’s safe to assume that is for a reason.

Related: Kevin O’Connell Wants Us to Believe Vikings Aren’t Sold on Trading Up for QB

After doing his homework, Kevin O’Connell does not see Michael Penix Jr as a QB who is accurate enough to become a franchise guy in the NFL. If the Vikings are targeting a later 1st round quarterback, it’ll likely be Bo Nix (who they have been tied to a couple times recently).

Minnesota Vikings Next Franchise QB Odds, Following Kirk Cousins’ Departure https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/minnesota-vikings-next-qb-odds-nfl-draft/ Wed, 13 Mar 2024 03:01:15 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=48745 With Kirk Cousins headed to Atlanta, the Minnesota Vikings are fully expected to spend their 1st round pick in the upcoming draft on their new franchise quarterback, whether that means staying at No. 11 overall or (more likely) moving up somewhere in the top ten.

The NFL draft kicks off on April 25th, leaving the Vikings front office a little over a month to decide their strategy. Will they target a guy that they are forced to trade up for or will they like one of the tier-two QBs, who will likely be available to them at No. 11, possibly later if they want to trade back?

This draft is seen as one of the best quarterback drafts in recent history and should present head coach Kevin O’Connell and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah numerous possibilities, depending on who they like. No matter which way you slice it, though, the 2024 NFL Draft will be one of the most important drafts in franchise history.

Minnesota Vikings Next QB Odds

We know the Vikings are going to select a quarterback early. The uncertainty lies in which quarterbacks they like and which they are comfortable entrusting the future of the organization with. The draft class features several talented quarterbacks, four of which are currently expected to go in the top-10: Caleb Williams (USC), Drake Maye (UNC), Jayden Daniels (LSU) and J.J. McCarthy (Michigan).

The two quarterbacks currently viewed by draft experts as 2nd tier could go anywhere outside of the top-10, depending on how much the QB hungry teams (like the Vikings) value them one month from now. Those two guys are Bo Nix (Oregon) and Michael Penix Jr. (Washington).

Related: Dalton Risner is Struggling to Find Free Agent Suitors Again and He’s Tweeting About It

Whether Minnesota targets one of those top guys or decide to sit back and wait for Nix or Penix… there is a lot of risk involved. There’s no way to know which route the Vikings will travel. But one worthy indicator of what they might do comes in sportsbooks like DraftKings, which currently has Minnesota as a top-3 favorite to land all of the above QBs mentioned, outside of Drake Maye, who’s been falling down boards in recent days, leading his odds to be pulled until those rumors settle.

  • J.J. McCarthy: +150 (1st)
  • Bo Nix: +250 (2nd)
  • Michael Penix Jr.: +300 (T-1st)
  • Jayden Daniels: +600 (3rd)
  • Caleb Williams: +1500 (3rd)
  • Drake Maye: N/A

Odds via DraftKings

J.J. McCarthy is currently the favorite, of the top QBs, to be taken by the Vikings. The odds for McCarthy, Nix and Penix Jr, however, are all within 150 points of each other, meaning it’s still very possible that their next quarterback ends up being any of those three.

All options are still worth plus money, though, meaning the odds are stacked against you no matter who you bet on. That’s why the sportsbooks are offering you more money, if you win, than they will take from you, if you lose. For example, if you bet $100 on McCarthy, you would win $150. Bet $100 on Bo Nix tonight and you win $250, if he ends up being drafted by the Vikings, etc.

Related: Former Packers RB Aaron Jones is Signing with the Minnesota Vikings

Michael Penix Jr. is listed at +300 odds, which makes him less likely than either Nix or McCarthy but the Vikings are still tied as the most likely team to take him (Seattle is also +300). This again suggests that various outcomes are still possible.

The former Heisman winnerJayden Daniels has odds of +600 to land with the Vikings, making him the least likely of the five listed. The Commanders are favored to land him at -130 odds. Minnesota is +1500 to land Williams, meaning that is highly unlikely to happen… though they do have the 3rd best odds.

What to Expect in the 2024 NFL Draft

These odds confirm what we already expected to happen once Kirk Cousins left town. The Minnesota Vikings are drafting a quarterback next month. It’s just a matter of which one they prefer and how much draft capital they’re willing to give up to secure their guy.

Related: Danielle Hunter Signing with Houston Texans

While there may be a quarterback available at the 11th pick, there’s a chance they might not be satisfied with that option. The Vikings are likely to assess each team’s position on the draft board to determine where they need to be to select their preferred quarterback. This draft could be super exciting, and huge for the future of the organization.

1st Round QB Hopefuls are Working Hard to Impress Minnesota Vikings at Senior Bowl https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/1st-round-qb-hopefuls-are-working-hard-to-impress-minnesota-vikings-at-senior-bowl/ Fri, 02 Feb 2024 02:39:45 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=47265 The Minnesota Vikings are going into the most important offseason of Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s short tenure as general manager, and the biggest questions surround who will be the signal caller for the 2024 squad. Kirk Cousins may or may not back. Either way, the Vikings are expected to take a QB early.

Senior Bowl QBs Battling in front of Minnesota Vikings coaches and executives

How early is still anyone’s guess but nearly the entire organization, including most of the front office, much of the scouting department and the entire coaching staff is in attendance in Mobile, AL this week where a few projected day one QBs are competing at the Reese’s Senior Bowl.

Related: Offseason Contract Extension Possible for Kevin O’Connell

There have been multiple quarterbacks linked to the Vikings for the draft, with top names like Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels talked about in a possible trade-up, but that would most likely require a move up into the top 3. In the scenario that the Vikings stay put at 11 and take a top defender, there are still multiple directions they can take at the quarterback position.

Bo Nix: Senior Bowl Practice Minnesota Vikings
Vasha Hunt-USA TODAY Sports

Bo Nix – Oregon Ducks

One name that has been connected to the Vikings has been Oregon signal caller and Heisman Finalist Bo Nix. The biggest thing going for Nix is his experience, as he has over 50 career starts in 5 collegiate seasons between Auburn and Oregon, but he had many question marks coming into the Senior Bowl, and those came to call on day 1, where he struggled.

Arguably his biggest concern has been his deep ball passing, and those have been highlighted so far in Mobile. Per Bleacher Report, most of Nix’s passes have been short throws, and while he has performed well for the most part in that area, when he has gone deep the throws have not been where they needed to be, missing low, high and behind.

“Nix is not normally this inaccurate on film, but it’s not surprising to see him late to trigger and generally a little anxious as a thrower. Both of those traits track with what he put on film, and both have cranked up in an unfamiliar environment. If there was a competition for the best quarterback in Mobile, Nix wouldn’t be first, second and probably not even third.”

Bleacher Report Scouting Department

But most reports out of Mobile surrounding Nix, especially from Thursday (day 3) have been a lot more positive. Some have even moved him all the way up their QB for the week, saying he has had the most impressive overall week of any QB there.

Michael Penix Jr. : Senior Bowl Practice
Vasha Hunt-USA TODAY Sports

Michael Penix Jr – Washington Huskies

Another big name that has been talked about ending up in purple has been national championship runner up QB Michael Penix Jr. After a masterclass of a game in the national semifinal game, Penix Jr struggled in the final, notably with the heavy amount of pressure that Michigan Wolverines threw at him.

But there’s no doubting the impressive numbers he put up the past two seasons, compiling 9,544 yards and 67 touchdowns vs just 19 interceptions. His 65.4 completion percentage is concerning, but not alarming.

What is alarming is the fact that Penix put up those eye-popping numbers at Washington, after a rollercoaster of ups and downs at Indiana, where he totaled just 4,197 yards, 29 touchdowns and 15 interceptions (20 games) over four different seasons. Both of his seasons on the West Coast were individually more impressive than four combined seasons in Bloomington.

Penix is another prospect who has had some question marks coming into this week, most notably his age and injury history, with three of his seasons ending early due to injury, including two torn ACLs. Penix got off to a slow start at the Senior Bowl, struggling with his accuracy early on, but the lefty gunslinger was able to lock in as the week has gone and his reviews have been better in days two and three.

Spencer Rattler : Senior Bowl Practice
Vasha Hunt-USA TODAY Sports

Spencer Rattler – South Carolina

Then, there’s the darkhorse 1st-round QB talent in Mobile, Spencer Rattler, who nobody has had on their radar as a possible first round pick since pretty much 2021. But that has changed in recent weeks, as steam around the former Sooner/Gamecock is suddenly bursting out of the kettle.

Related: 5 Offseason Moves that Make the Minnesota Vikings a Super Bowl Contender

Rattler threw for 3,186 yards, 19 touchdowns and 8 interceptions at South Carolina last season. His 68.9 completion percentage was the best since his redshirt sophomore year in Oklahoma, when he split starter duties with Caleb Williams, who eventually transferred to USC and is expected to be drafted No. 1 overall in April’s draft.

Outside of his 2020 season at Oklahoma, when he threw 28 touchdowns and just 7 interceptions, his QB totals don’t year-over-year don’t necessarily jump off the page. But his 68.5 career completion percentage is rather impressive, as is his 77/32 TD/INT ratio.

Particularly during team drills on Wednesday, Rattler was impressive. He was composed on his dropback, went through his progressions quickly, and was decisive triggering on throws. And on one throw in teams, he rifled a high-velocity laser to Xavier Legette 25 yards down the field, outside the numbers.
