Prior to Wednesday’s sweep clinching victory over the Baltimore Orioles, the Twins’ postseason chances sat at 36.9%, nearly 50% lower than the Tigers, at 84.4%.

The Minnesota Twins weren’t very active last offseason, but no matter how cheap they decided to be, one player they weren’t going to bring back was Manuel Margot, who was acquired in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers before the 2024 season, as insurance for Byron Buxton.

Detroit Tigers release Kenta Maeda, outright Manuel Margot

But on Wednesday night, Detroit cut loose two former Minnesota Twins from their 40-man roster, outrighting Margot and unconditionally releasing RHP Kenta Maeda.

Manuel Margot had been out of the Tigers’ lineup since mid-April with a knee tendon issue. After he went 4-for-16 during his five game rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo, instead of activating him back to the big leagues, the Tigers told him to stay where he is, and outrighted him off the 40-man roster.

Manuel Margot was not good for the MN Twins

Unfortunately, Margot posted a terrible .238/.289/.337 slash line across 129 games, and became most well-known for his pinch-hitting ineptitude, going an unbelievable 0-for-32 in pinch hitting appearances in 2024..

That’s why it was somewhat surprising Manuel Margot found a job at all for 2025. In the end, however, he played in just six games for the Tigers, going an impressive 6-for-19, before Detroit expunged him from their 40-man roster. Don’t feel too bad for Margot. He’ll make $200K down on the Tigers’ farm.

Given the service time Margot has, it is possible he could reject his assignment to Triple-A and elect free agency instead. A minimum major league salary pays over $700,000. Would Margot be able to find a big league suitor, though? That’s the question.

Kenta Maeda hits free agency

On the flip side, Kenta Maeda was simply set packing. The former Minnesota Twins starter was in the final year of a two-year contract paying him a total of $24 million. He was someone the Twins had a relative amount of interest in retaining prior to 2024, but they had no intentions of giving him a two year deal like what he got in Detroit.

It quickly proved wise for Minnesota to move on. Maeda made just 17 starts (29 appearances) last season and was pushed to the bullpen while owning a 6.09 ERA (4.96 FIP). This season all seven of his games came out of the bullpen and he owned an even worse 7.88 ERA (6.08 FIP).

There were indicators that Maeda’s stuff was tailing off as he aged. He also missed the 2022 season due to Tommy John surgery. Now 37 years old and without an uptick out of the bullpen, he could be facing the end of the line.

Minnesota Twins still chasing Detroit Tigers

Through one series the Twins are 1-2 against Detroit but the two teams were separated by just a single run. Minnesota has seen the Tigers develop under the watch of World Series winning manager A.J. Hinch.

The two teams don’t face each other for quite some time as their next scheduled game comes on June 27th in Detroit. Minnesota will hope to be in a substantially better position than their current 16-20 record by then.

If the Twins haven’t closed the gap by the next time they see Detroit, then they’ll likely be looking a month ahead as to how they can move assets as deadline sellers.

While the Twins haven’t cut their manpower down to 26 players just yet, manager Rocco Baldelli is getting increasingly close to finalizing the roster for later this week.

Most of the same faces will be in the starting lineup later this week. Barring any unforeseen injuries or circumstances in the next three days, Carlos Correa will be at shortstop, Byron Buxton in center field and Pablo Lopez on the bump. But the final roster will have some new faces too.

Manuel Margot’s no good, very bad year with the Minnesota Twins…

One player from the 2024 team that Minnesota Twins fans don’t have to worry about in 2025 is failed outfield experiment Manuel Margot. Last offseason, then 29-year-old Margot signed with the Twins as their fourth outfielder.

The Twins were forced to play Margot in 129 games last season, and it did not go well. He finished the season with a .238 batting average and .626 OPS, both by far the worst numbers of his career, as was his -0.9 bWAR.

Not only was Margot’s offensive performance underwhelming, but so was his defense, which was particularly disappointing. To add some nightmare fuel, Margot set a new MLB record, going 0-for-35 in pinch hit appearances in 2024.

Thus, it was no surprise when the Minnesota Twins showed zero interest in bringing Manuel Margot back for 2025. Instead, he had to settle for a spring training camp invite with the Milwaukee Brewers. On Sunday, the Brewers cut Margot. Fortunately for the nine-year MLB veteran, the American League Central came calling yet again.

Margot finds new AL Central team — the Detroit Tigers

According to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal (The Athletic), Manuel Margot packed his stuff up down in Phoenix, AZ, where the Brewers hold the spring training, and boarded a plane due for Lakeland, FL, where Detroit Tigers facilities are located. Per Cody Stavenhagen (The Athletic), Margot is signing an MLB contract with the Tigers, meaning he’ll be on their Opening Day roster.

Margot was brought last offseason, to take the place of Michael A. Taylor, who proved to be the perfect outfield addition for a 2023 MN Twins team that won its first playoff series in nearly 20 years. Unfortunately, Margot’s signing did not produce (.238/.289/.337) anywhere near the results that Taylor’s one season at Target Field did.

Taylor ended up playing 129 games for that 2023 squad, including 123 appearances in center field, due to Buxton’s poor physical health that summer. Taylor responded with one of the best seasons of his career, producing a .720 OPS while playing a high-caliber center field. In 2023, Michael A. Taylor produced a total 1.9 bWAR, good for eighth-best on the team.

In 2025, the Minnesota Twins have moved onto their third extra outfielder in three years, 30-year-old veteran Harrison Bader, who profiles much like the other two did. He has a career .242 batting average and .698 OPS. He’s coming off a down year (.236/.284/.373) with the Mets in which he played more than ever before (143 games).

Failed Minnesota Twins Outfielder Settles for Minor League Deal https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/minnesota-twins-news/manuel-margot-contract-milwaukee-brewers-spring-training/ Fri, 21 Feb 2025 20:08:18 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=60531 This offseason, the Minnesota Twins needed outfield help. That’s been the case just about every offseason since Byron Buxton took over as the starting center fielder, just due to his injury proneness.

In recent seasons, they have targeted right-handed hitters who can not just fill in for him in center, but who can provide a good defensive glove and righty bat to compliment the many lefties they have in the corner outfield spots, like Matt Wallner and Trevor Larnach in 2024 and 2025.

This season the Twins signed Harrison Bader, a former gold glove, to be that fourth right-handed hitting outfielder. Minnesota extra outfielder strategy has had a varied amount of success the last couple seasons.

In 2023, they hit on Michael A Taylor, who played in 129 games (388 PA) and had a career year (.220/.278/.442) posting his highest OPS (.720) since 2017. That’s the type of season they hope to get from Bader.

What they don’t want from their newest outfielder is what they got out of last season’s Michael A. Taylor replacement, Manuel Margot, who was brought in to fill the same role, but ended up being one of the worst outfield free agent signings in Minnesota Twins history, slashing .238/.289/.337 (.626 OPS) for just a 76 OPS+.

Former Minnesota Twins outfielder Manuel Margot surfaces with Milwaukee

As of this morning, the 30-year-old Margot had yet to find a new home for 2025. But Friday afternoon, after he was spotted in the Milwaukee Brewers clubhouse, Jon Heyman (NY Post) reported that the failed 2024 Twins signing settled for a minor league deal across the border, with an invite to spring training.

The Brewers haven’t made the transaction official, but the minor league deal isn’t going to make any waves. He’ll likely have an opt out if he doesn’t make the roster, and is definitely hoping for a better 2025 season.

Related: Brooks Lee May Not Join Twins on Opening Day

Margot made $10 million in 2024, $6 million of which was paid by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He . He won’t see anywhere near that payday this season even if he’s able to make the Brewers roster.

The real ineptitude for Margot last season was an inability to produce as a pinch hitter. Rocco Baldelli continued to trot him out there, and Margot responded by going a franchise-worst 0-for-30 in pinch hitting situations. As a substitute, routinely inserted as a platoon player, Margot went a dismal 8-for-68 with two extra-base hits.

Broadcaster Cory Provus specifically alluded to Baldelli’s usage of Margot when wondering if the Twins will change managerial style in certain situations this year.

Can Manuel Margot bounce back with Brewers?

It’s not exactly shocking that the Minnesota Twins had belief Margot could be of benefit to them. With Tampa Bay in 2023 Margot slashed .264/.310/.376. He also had a .713 OPS against southpaws, and that certainly lined up with what Minnesota was attempting to get from him.

There was probably no reason to believe that Margot would find the 104 OPS+ he posted with the Rays back in 2022. What the MN Twins didn’t expect was for Margot to a negative defensively. But that’s what they got.

Manuel Margot owned a -3 DRS (defensive runs saved) and -5 OAA (outs above average) across all outfield positions last year. Those were easily the worst marks of his career. Now into his 30’s, he’ll need to prove he has more in the tank.

Related: Carlos Correa Not Wearing Cleats at Twins Practice?

It was a tough pill for Minnesota to swallow after getting exceptional defense in the same role from Michael A. Taylor last season. Not only did Taylor have a 92 OPS+, but his 5 DRS and 8 OAA weren’t much of a drop-off from Buxton’s typical production. It remains to be seen where Margot fits for Milwaukee.

He won’t play over star youngster Jackson Chourio. He’s also a lesser option than Garrett Mitchell and Sal Frelick. The veteran may provide insurance for lefty Christian Yelich. If Margot does make the roster and stick around, he’ll see his former Minnesota Twins teammates for a matchup in mid-May and late-June.

But the official start of the MLB offseason came immediately following the Los Angeles Dodgers’ World Series win. That means the calendar immediately flips towards 2025, and roster building can commence. The biggest domino to fall, as it relates to Minnesota, was regarding a player they no longer employ.

Seattle Mariners make Jorge Polanco a free agent

Last offseason Derek Falvey dealt Jorge Polanco to the Seattle Mariners in a move that was necessitated by a limited payroll. Ownership dropped the overall outlay by $30 million, and Polanco became a expendable commodity that was turned into a reallocation of assets. Of course that trade went belly up for everyone, but he isn’t sticking around with the Mariners either.

It is possible there was an acclimation process for Polanco, and he simply didn’t settle in with a new team. That said, he’s not getting any younger and did again undergo a surgery to his knee. Issues with his lower body have kept his games played below 118 per season for each of the past three years. It will be fascinating to see what sort of a deal the 31-year-old lands in his first experience with free agency.

Polanco’s 93 OPS+ wasn’t horrific, but he’s not a plus-defender. It’s probably best he seeks out a one-year deal with an option to make it a bit longer.

Minnesota Twins decline multiple options as well

There was a level of uncertainty regarding what the Mariners would ultimately do with Polanco. There was no uncertainty when it came to the team options Minnesota had on both Manuel Margot and Kyle Farmer. Each were declined as was expected.

Last season the Twins over-extended themselves when giving Farmer a bloated $6.3 million in arbitration. He has been a key part of the clubhouse, but it seemed that the open market dictated a deal that would have been half that amount at best. He struggled mightily throughout much of the season and finished with just an 82 OPS+. At least we’ll always have this fun home run.

The Twins needed Byron Buxton insurance in the outfield and opted for Margot as the answer. It was a defendable acquisition that almost immediately went belly-up. He proved to be a bad defender, posted a career-worst 76 OPS+, and goes down as the worst pinch hitter of all-time. Thankfully his $2 million buyout is paid by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Twins Love Analytics but Refuse to Admit Pinch Hitting is Dumb https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/minnesota-twins-news/rocco-baldelli-bad-pinch-hitting-decisions/ Mon, 23 Sep 2024 17:23:23 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=55326 Baseball is not a game played on spreadsheets, but the best organizations use data-driven processes to drive their results. The Minnesota Twins are among those forward-thinking organizations. That doesn’t remove feel from the game, and Rocco Baldelli has become too rigid with regards to pinch hitting.

Rocco Baldelli has hurt Minnesota Twins with pinch hitting

There have been plenty of unfounded criticisms thrown at Rocco Baldelli this season. If there is one that sticks, it’s this one. The Minnesota Twins have lived and died through pinch hitters this season, and it has cost them plenty. Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic put it succinctly.

“It’s hard to argue the Twins’ frequent pinch hitting has paid off. Baldelli has used the AL’s second-most pinch hitters this year (176), and they’ve hit just .196 with a .566 OPS. Baldelli has also used the AL’s second-most pinch hitters since 2021 (595), and they’ve batted just .205 with a .609 OPS that ranks fifth-worst in the league in that span. It hasn’t been a winning strategy.”

Gleeman on the Twins pinch hitting (The Athletic)

The thinking behind a pinch hitter for Baldelli is straightforward. His lineups have been platoon-focused for the past two years. Only three teams in baseball have had the platoon advantage more often than Minnesota’s 62.6% this season. Minnesota’s manager has tried to constantly give his hitters a leg up, but it has been to their detriment on a large scale.

Related: Minnesota Twins Swap Out Bullpen Pitchers

Pinch hit leverage index measures the situation in which a pinch hitter is used. League average in 2024 comes out to 1.53. The Twins have put their pinch hitters in the eighth-lowest leverage situations at 1.44. Essentially, Baldelli doing line changes multiple times throughout a game is often in spots where the game doesn’t even dictate that decision.

It’s great that Manuel Margot has hit lefties this season. If he hadn’t then there would be no value at all. There isn’t a spot in which he should be taking at bats for anyone though. It took Baldelli months to give Matt Wallner, Trevor Larnach, and others same-handed plate appearances. Although they aren’t in the best spot during those at bats, it removes a more quality player from the lineup as a whole.

Related: Minnesota Twins Trying to Get Reinforcements Back on the Field

Rocco Baldelli being as rigid as he has been with regards to pinch hitting this year for the Twins has been a problem. At times it was because of the results players were putting forward, but an inability to adjust isn’t good.

Pinch hitting can come back to haunt more than Minnesota

From a general baseline perspective, the reality is that a pinch hitter represents a situational advantage rather than an overall one. To explain a step further, for whatever reason, the pinch hitter is coming off the bench to replace someone that warranted a starting spot.

No team in baseball gave pinch hitters more at bats in 2024 than the Minnesota Twins (155). The team that utilized pinch hitters the least? That’s the New York Yankees (51). Aaron Boone isn’t take Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, or Giancarlo Stanton out of any spot. He also isn’t rearranging deck chairs for hitters similar to Anthony Volpe, Gleyber Torres, or Oswaldo Cabrera.

If you are going to pinch hit, then leaning into it at the most opportune times makes sense. The Tampa Bay Rays have just 101 pinch hit at bats this season, but they have generated a leverage index of 1.91. Unless the specific outcome of that at bat is going to win them the game, then playing slight probabilities is something they choose to avoid.

Pitching in the big leagues has become such a perfected science, and pitch hitters are often tasked with facing a nasty reliever meant just for them. The ability to come off the bench and succeed against stuff like that is not a skill most players posses.

Related: Willi Castro Takes Chuck Knoblauch’s Painful Minnesota Twins Throne

Ultimately a team is often better served by sticking with their best options each time the game starts, than they are trying to mix in an option for a given situation. When that spot in the order comes back around, a manager doesn’t have to worry about thinking what if.

Twins Could Trade One of Fanbase’s Least-Liked Players https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/minnesota-twins-rumors/rumors-twins-could-trade-one-of-fanbases-least-liked-players/ Wed, 24 Jul 2024 23:43:30 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=53115 There’s no telling what the Minnesota Twins will do ahead of the July 30 MLB trade deadline. As usual, most signs point to the front office doing next to nothing. Ownership spending constraints don’t help.

It also doesn’t help that so many teams are stuck in the middle of the pack, trying to determine whether they’ll be buyers or sellers. That’s not the Twins. Although they’re still chasing the Cleveland Guardians, their chances of making the playoffs are very strong.

In a perfect world, the Twins would emerge as one of the biggest buyers at the deadline. Yet, it’s never that simple. Parting with high-upside prospects just to solve a couple small needs carries a lot of risk, especially if they can’t hang with the best teams in MLB.

But there’s always the chance that the Twins will surprise everyone and actually make an impact addition at the deadline. Sometimes, the best addition is by subtraction.

Could the Twins trade Manuel Margot?

Minnesota Twins, Manuel Margot
Jesse Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

If there’s one player the Twins could likely afford to trade, especially if they found another upgrade, is outfielder Manuel Margot. Sure, he’s excellent against left-handed pitchers, but the Twins also have Trevor Larnach and Matt Wallner itching for more opportunities, even if they aren’t right-handed hitters.

Yet, would the Twins really trade Margot? Maybe not, but The Athletic’s Aaron Gleeman believes it’s possible if the Twins could find a replacement who could be a regular starter against lefties.

“Minnesota is clearly in buyer mode, so trading a veteran is unlikely, but the Twins could look to upgrade Margot’s role as a backup outfielder and platoon bat versus left-handed pitching. He’s hit lefties pretty well, batting .289 with a .780 OPS, but Margot has gone 0-for-22 as a pinch hitter and his defense has been shaky. If they add more power in the role, they could look to find a taker for Margot.” — Aaron Gleeman on Twins

Margot currently has the worst dWAR (defensive wins above replacement) among position players on the Twins roster, at -0.9. He also has the second-worst OPS on the team, only ahead of Christian Vazquez, who provides value as a plus-defender. In other words, Margot’s contributions to the Twins are rare.

  • Manuel Margot stats against righties: .184/.246/.248/.494, 0 HR, 11 RBI, 118 PA
  • Manuel Margue stats against lefties: .298/.352/.436/.789, 3 HR, 14 RBI, 105 PA

While Margot has a respectable batting line against lefties, he’s hit just .184 against righties. That’s hard to stomach for a 29-year-old player who holds zero upside. Margot may only have a base salary of $4 million, but finding a replacement for a similar cost shouldn’t be difficult. We’ll see whether the Twins can pull off such a heist with less than a week to spare.

Manuel Margot Stinks but Twins May Still Win That Trade, Thanks to Rayne Doncon https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/minnesota-twins-news/minnesota-twins-manuel-margot-rayne-doncon-trade/ Thu, 23 May 2024 19:39:33 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=51257 As Derek Falvey sought to round out his 26-man roster for Rocco Baldelli this offseason, one of the final pieces to be addressed was the addition of a fourth outfielder that could back up Byron Buxton in center field.

Opting against a Michael A. Taylor reunion, their guy wound up being another veteran, Manuel Margot, who they got in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers this offseason, along with SS Rayne Doncon, for minor league SS Noah Miller.

The Margot part of that deal has been an utter disaster. In 96 at bats this season, the newly minted Twin is hitting an abysmal .198 with a .281 onbase % and .508 OPS.

When the Twins looked at outfielders across the free agent landscape, there were more than a handful of names they could have considered. The hope was that Byron Buxton was going to be good to go, and for the most part, he has been.

Were the Minnesota Twins left empty-handed in Manuel Margot deal?

That meant the focus in an acquisition would be a right-handed hitter that could play a strong centerfield defense. Manuel Margot fit that bill, even if he wasn’t the Twins’ first option. The Twins did engage Taylor, but not at the level he thought his production warranted. Looking at his line now, it seems Minnesota was right.

After the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired Manuel Margot in the Tyler Glasnow trade, he was something of a throw in for them and certainly available. With money being sent to the Twins in the deal, his cost was minimal.

Sure, parting with minor league platinum glove winner, Noah Miller, was tough. But he can’t hit, and that remains something of an ongoing problem. So is this one of those classic “lose-lose” MLB trades that nobody ends up remembering? Maybe not

Rayne Doncon could make Twins look genius

Remember the third person included in this deal, Rayne Doncon? He can play shortstop or third base and has a much better bat than both Miller and Margot. Doncon was signed for just under $500,000, out of the Dominican Republic.

The Athletic’s Aaron Gleeman recently called the new Twins prospect among the best surprises in the system, so far this year. In 40 minor league games this season, Rayne Doncon is hitting .274 with a .818 OPS, 4 home runs and 19 RBI.

“Doncon was targeted because Twins scouts felt he had untapped offensive upside, and the early returns suggest they were right…Doncon has split time between shortstop and third base this season, but he profiles best at the hot corner as he continues to mature physically.”

Aaron Gleeman – The Athletic

Needing just 38 games at the otherwise offensively difficult Florida State League, Doncon earned a promotion to High-A Cedar Rapids. He will likely spend most of the season there as he’s just 20 years old, but finding quick success in a new organization is something that is certainly welcomed.

Thankfully the Margot acquisition hasn’t been too damaging for the Twins thus far, and DaShawn Keirsey Jr. could soon come to eat his lunch. Even if he doesn’t end up providing the value they had hoped for at the major league level, upgrading prospect status from Miller to Doncon is something that could benefit the organization for years to come.

The trade was completed so the Dodgers can clear space on their 40-man roster to sign Kike Hernandez, who the Twins were a finalist to land as well. While they won’t land the Puerto Rican utility man, they will get the Dodgers leftovers out of the deal, and that isn’t a bad thing because the Twins seem to have come out okay in the deal.

Minnesota Twins trade with Los Angeles Dodgers

Losing out on Kike Hernandez hurts. But they got some positive assets out of the deal, whether they end up producing for the Twins or being used as pawns in future transactions. But Margot, for sure, looks like a fit for 2024.

Passan also mentioned that cash was also involved in the deal. Manuel Margot, who spent the past few seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays, was included in the Tyler Glasnow trade to the Dodgers this offseason. However, he will not have the opportunity to play a single game in a Dodgers uniform.

The Twins also added prospect Rayne Doncon in the trade. Doncon was ranked as the Dodgers 23rd prospect. The twins also will receive some cash in the deal, as the Dodgers made this move to sign free agent Kiki Hernandez,
