Unquestionably his most notable miss was taking Lewis Cine in the first round, and passing on Kyle Hamilton to do so.

Not every notable bust has been the byproduct of an Adofo-Mensah draft. Of course, he hasn’t been around long enough for that to be true. Former general manager Rick Spielman took Laquon Treadwell 23rd overall in 2016.

Somehow has lasted a decade in the league, and he’ll be on an active roster again Sunday.

Laquon Treadwell now a Daniel Jones target for Colts

Last season Laquon Treadwell signed with the Indianapolis Colts and got into just two games. He logged 19 snaps, all of which occurred on special teams. This season he has played 12 special teams snaps in one game. He’ll be active again on Sunday.

Treadwell has effectively saved his career by becoming a special teams contributor. He last caught a pass in 2023 playing for the Ravens, and he hasn’t found the end zone since 2021 with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In four seasons with the Vikings, Treadwell played just 53 games and got only 16 starts. The former Mississippi product had only 65 receptions for 701 yards and two touchdowns. As a rookie in 2023, Jordan Addison started 14 of 17 games played, had 911 yards, and scored 10 times.

It remains interesting each time Treadwell’s name pops up in that his career continues despite and overall lack of production. If he gets offensive snaps for the Colts this weekend against Pittsburgh, he’ll catch passes from one-time Minnesota Vikings quarterback Daniel Jones.

After leaving the Vikings this offseason, Jones has the Colts owning the best record in the league at 7-1. He has completed 71.2% of his passes for 2,062 yards and 13 touchdowns. At this point, Jones looks like a legitimate MVP candidate.

Minnesota is on the road against the Detroit Lions Sunday. They are nearly double-digit underdogs and need to pull off a win.

Here’s to Justin Jefferson (Hopefully) Being Better than Spielman’s Last Two 1st-Round WR Picks… https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/heres-to-justin-jefferson-hopefully-being-better-than-spielmans-last-two-1st-round-wr-picks/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/heres-to-justin-jefferson-hopefully-being-better-than-spielmans-last-two-1st-round-wr-picks/#respond Fri, 24 Apr 2020 14:38:49 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=23743

The Minnesota Vikings drafted Justin Jefferson (LSU – WR) last night, with the #22 pick in the first round of the NFL Draft. While I really like the pick, and apparently so does Gary Kubiak, I can’t help but feel like we’ve been here before. The Vikings have picked two wide receivers in the first round of the Rick Spielman Era… and they haven’t really gone as planned.

Most recently, as we all know, the Vikes drafted Laquon Treadwell #23 in the 2016 NFL draft. And, we’ve spent the last 3 years watching him disappoint us. I would include his numbers, but I don’t want to have that disgusting take in my mouth for the rest of the night.

Then, a few years ago, the Vikings drafted Cordarrelle Patterson with the 29th pick in the 2013 draft. And while I loved watching Flash return kicks and run trick plays, he was supposed to be much more than that.

Prior to 2013, our first round WR draft pick history included Percy Harvin in 2009 (who we should now sign again???) and Randy Moss in 1998… Let’s hope Jefferson winds up being the latter half of this conversation.

Thanks for reading,

PS: I didn’t forget about Troy Williamson… but I wish I could.

A Minnesota Vikings Best/Worst of the Decade… but Different. https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/a-minnesota-vikings-best-worst-of-the-decade-but-different/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/a-minnesota-vikings-best-worst-of-the-decade-but-different/#respond Mon, 30 Dec 2019 13:07:47 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=20195 ICYMI, the Author of this blog is British and needs a Translation Key:

*British people spell a lot of words wrong: “graying, defense, and savior” are all misspelled in this piece.

*British men use the c-word as if it’s a replacement for “asshole” in our profanity dictionary, and get away with it for whatever reason… (I’ve seen it in movies too)

*they also use weird words like “twat” and “wanker”

*I have no idea what a “Hokey Cokey” is… sorry.

———-

We are approaching the end of another decade and everyone is doing a top-10 this; or a top 10 that, of the decade. I am different. I am a non-chest hair shaving, *greying, British man; who loves being unique (or a *cunt, whatever works).

So, here is your Minnesota Vikings TOP-6 “Good, Bad and Ugly” of the decade:

Let’s start happy and end in misery. We have had a lot of good this decade, but here is my top 6!

  1. The Minneapolis Miracle: It was 2am or 3am or something late am for me on this cold night in January. The kids were asleep, I was lying in bed on my own, sad. Head on the pillow, staring at my phone wondering what happened to the *defence in the second half? And then Keenum steps in to… I do a full-on burpee in bed. My first one ever! Jumping up and down. Silently cheering and punching the air… Vikings win it! Goosebumps. Still. I will be telling my grand kids to tell their grand kids about this one
  2. Adrian Peterson MVP season: Purple Jesus ran for TWO THOUSAND and NINETY-SEVEN (2,097) yards! Coming off of a career threatening injury, he battled back to win the league’s MVP, in a year where he carried the Vikings into playoffs. The O-line got some credit for giving him the holes, but boy did he fill them (Giggidy)! I was personally thankful I picked him up in the 3rd round of my fantasy draft that year!
  3. Rob Brzezinski: If someone told the 13-year-old me that a Math geek would make some arbitrary top 6 list in 2019, I would have been walking around with even more awkward erections than what I remember (I remember there being a lot)! Instead I got a $0.99 cone from McDonald’s for getting a statistically impossible 103% in the math test. But enough about my awkward and lonely teen years, Mr. B is the hero we don’t deserve. We signed Kirk to a guaranteed deal, extended Hunter, Diggs, Thielen, Barr, Kendricks, Griffen… all thanks to a guy who was good with numbers. Nerds of the world salute you sir!
  4. WR bargains: Did you know that Adam Thielen was undrafted? Yeah crazy right! He nearly became a dental equipment salesman. The horror! We also found something called a “Diggs” in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL draft. Both are now absolute cornerstones of the team. You would easily stud them out to mate with your wife or girlfriend. Or both!
  5. Aaron Rodgers getting hurt: Now before any of your Boomers/Gen Z (who ever you pricks are) come into my mentions (that’s @UKSkol on Twitter) with “you really gonna celebrate an injury brah?”. I am not celebrating the injury. I am enjoying the amount of whining he did post-injury. I mean, he walked into A. Barr and we all know A-Rod can’t handle his drink. But of course, the NFL sucked him off and changed the rule, and as a result Clay Matthews got punished. It was the gift that kept on giving…
  6. US Bank Stadium: What a beaut! It is loud, modern and fucking beautiful! It is better than Wembley, and that is high praise coming from a Brit. My only game at the Bank will forever be cherished in my memory as one of the best days in my life!

The bad, ugly, painful, and/or crying in the fetal position Top-6:

  1. 27 yard field goal: I don’t want to talk about it. It was TWENTY-SEVEN FUCKING YARDS BLAIR. *Twat. No, I am fine. I am over it. Just kick the damn thing straight. You weren’t even close with-it you *wanker. I am fine. Honestly. Prick.
  2. The 2018 offensive line: You spend $84 million on a quarterback and you put a sieve in front of him. You might as well have IR’d the poor fucker, at the start of the season. Poor Kirk stood no chance. We started with Remmers and Compton at guard. Elflein at *centre and Hill at RT! The horror. Anyway, Kirk got to taste the US Bank turf really well!
  3. Laquon Treadwell: The *saviour. All we needed was a wide receiver to get us over the hump. Forget the awesome linebackers, Myles Jack and Jaylon Smith. Forget Xavien Howard or Michael “145 receptions” Thomas. Laquon Treadwell was the *saviour. 9 starts. ONE catch. 15 yards… Decent catch radius, though!
  4. Brett Favre’s second season: This one just sneaks into the decade. 2009 was great – NFCCG, 4200+ yards and a career best QB rating of 107.2. We had to bring him back, right? No brainer! I mean he is a Vikings HOFer, after all. 13 games, 2500 yards and the worst QB rating of his Vikings HOF career, this went bad quick. But we will always have the 1st of November, 2009 and the four touchdowns you threw at Lambeau.
  5. Tony Sparano: No jokes. This was sad. RIP Tony Sparano
  6. US Bank Stadium killing the birds: We built this beautiful stadium with 200,000 feet of glass. Apparently, glass reflects the sky. Who knew?! The dumbass birds get confused and crash into the glass and die. Get this, on average 111 birds die every year at the US Bank stadium. Well, that and the hopes of 66,655 Vikings fans far too often…

Ah the ugly. Brace yourself. You are about to enter a dark part of the decade. This section will haunt you.

Maybe grab a strong drink before you read on… whatever skinny-canned seltzer you Americans are drinking this month.

  1. 38-7: Sigh. We just came off a miracle win at home. The Eagles had a backup quarterback, Napoleon Dynamite. We are looking at a super bowl at our new home stadium with a win. “Bring it home” is the cover photo for every single Vikings fan on Twitter. First drive was exactly by script, Case marches the team down the field. Rudy scores. Paint the end zone in the purple colours fellas, it is coming home. But then, shit got ugly. Like your wife screaming at you during birth because “YOU PUT THIS THING IN ME!”, ugly. It was all a blur after the interception. I just wanted it to end. Please, make it stop…
  2. Adrian Peterson hitting his kid: Why AP? Why? You were league MVP. a hero in every Vikings fans’ eyes. Then you do that shit. I could never wear his jersey again after that shit. This isn’t 1950’s America anymore. It wasn’t just the action that was ugly. It was the ban for the year and how the whole situation just left the fanbase in purgatory. Is he coming back? Do we trade him? Nope, he’s staying… It was U-G-L-Y. We should have just traded his ass to Somali or something.
  3. Teddy’s knee: Who got excited for what Teddy could do, after he made those two throws against the Chargers in the preseason? This guy! New stadium, solid team, Teddy firing… Postseason, here we come! — *Beep beep* — ‘Oh I got a text message’, “FUCK! WHAT?! HOW?! Why is Rick is crying??” — Yup, it was Ugly. This didn’t go as planned at all. We are known for our knee injuries but this one was gut wrenching. The guy had potential and the team loved him… it all had so much promise.
  4. Zimmer’s eye: Well this was just crazy. Mike Zimmer scratches his eye. Has a gazillion surgeries and still can’t see out of it! What the hell kinda crazy ass shit is this?! For a long time all we saw in the news cycles was news on his eyes. We even had Mike Priefer as acting head coach, for a crucial game against Dallas, because of an eye surgery. You can’t write this shit. Well, I am… But you know what I mean.
  5. Sam Bradford’s knee: We loves our knew injuries, amirite? But this was just puzzling. Who got a boner when Sam absolutely torched the Saints on that Monday night in September? I did. I wanked over his throw to Jarius Wright several times. This was the year for sure. Or not.. another freak knee injury, one *Hokey Cokey in Chicago, and we’re suddenly looking at starter, Case Kennum with Teddy as a back up.That lead to our rinsing in the NFCCG. What the hell kind of ugly is this? I still don’t know what happened to his knees? Carpet burns?!
  6. US Bank Stadium super bowl: 1.061 billion Dollars spent on the state of the art facility. Bid for super bowl and win the bid. Build a team to win the super bowl. Make the game… well almost. We have covered this already. But we wasted the opportunity to make US Bank the greatest place in Vikings history. Ever.

I hope you didn’t send Laquon Treadwell any hate-mail before he left town after Vikings Training Camp, because he wasn’t even able to escape for a month before being roped back into the Twin Cities.

With new injuries poking holes into an already depleted WR depth chart (Chad Beebe – ankle), the Vikings are reportedly bringing him back in to fill as a WR3-4. All in all, I’d say the Vikings are lucky. Laquon is plug and play, for the most part… although, he only got a couple of interviews and zero job offers, after leaving… so take that how you want to…

Wouldn’t it be something if this was the turnaround Treadwell needed? Now, he comes in after looking at himself in the mirror, for a month, and turns into the superstar 1st round receiver we had all hoped he would be? Yeah…. dreams are fun.

Jaleel Johnson Welcomes Bradbury to NFL

With both Linval Joseph and Shamar Stephen sitting out, Jaleel Johnson got an opportunity to shine. Matched up with rookie first round pick, Garrett Bradbury and the 1’s yesterday, Johnson hiw punches in throughout the matchup. On a few occasions, Johnson was able to swipe away Bradbury’s hands and push him off of his base, to blow up some running plays. Bradbury is adjusting to life in the NFL, and Center isn’t an easy position to go from College to the Pros. The biggest thing that stood out was Jaleel, thoug. He looked strong, quick, and very focused. He will be a guy the Vikings need a big contribution from up-front, as the coaches pick and choose this deep DL rotation.

 Thankful for #14 & #19

Watching both Diggs and Thielen run routes and then chat with each other while the 2nd and 3rd team are getting reps, it really puts into perspective how fortunate we are to have both of them. They are the definition of professional and are both artists at what they do. We need to make sure we appreciate the hell out of them now, and realize the greatness we are watching. Both so smooth, so precise, and two guys who have each other’s backs. Neither are in it for individual accolades. They just want to make each other better, each and every play.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_code _builder_version=”3.26.5″] [/et_pb_code][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.26.5″]

Kirk Can Move?

You can already see Gary Kubiak’s fingerprints on this new offense. Kevin Stefanski, coming into his first full year as Offensive Coordinator; must feel like a kid on Christmas, with a brain to pick like Kubiak’s. Early on in camp, the different-styled approach they are taking with Cousins has been noticable. He’s done a lot more rollouts and moving around in the pocket… he’s dumped the ball off more too. Not being so “by the book” and moving away from such a robotic playing style is something that he/they have been working on.

He seems more aware of the off-script opportunities there are, with all of the talent on this roster. Kirk Cousins, no doubt, has talent. What the Vikings are trying to do, is remove that robotic computer chip, and have him come out slinging it. As we know, there are big play players all over this offense. If scrambling away and hitting a guy for a 70 yard catch-and-run on a broken play, is an element these coaches can help add to Kirk’s game, it makes this offense that much more dangerous.

Chad Beebe is the WR3

Speaking of smooth. Chad Beebe just has all the looks of this team’s WR3. The only thing holding Chad back is his health. He made an impact last year in the preseason and against the Lions in Detroit, but then that hamstring injury popped up. If he can keep himself healthy, he will be yet another weapon for Kirk Cousins and the Vikings’ offense. Watching him out there in the slot with the 1’s, he is in and out of his routes so precisely and his speed down the field is impressive, as well. Definitely someone to to keep an eye on, going forward. If healthy, I think this job is his to lose.

Elflein is Scaring Me Already

In drafting Garrett Bradbury and moving Pat Elflein back to Guard, there will obviously be some growing pains as #65 gets acclimated to his old position again. I don’t want to overreact because it was practice number 2, no pads, and there is a long ways to go. I’ll just chalk it up to OL PTSD from last season, and move forward. I think ultimately, making that move back to guard will help Pat but keep an eye on Dru Samia, as someone who should be put on notice if the interior OL struggles at all, early on. The NFC North is defined by its interior DL guys, so it’s a spot the Vikings need to have solidified or it’s going to be another long season for our QB and our offense.

Have You Seen or Heard About Hercules?

Hercules Mata’afa… if there is one guy who is full of buzz at Vikings training camp, it’s Herc. Moving him inside as a rusher has been an interesting component since he’s added some weight. All we have seen is his explosiveness and ability to get push up front. Again, all this is meh until the pads come on (right now), but Herc absolutely has all of our attention, and most importantly Mike Zimmer’s attention.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_code _builder_version=”3.26.5″] [/et_pb_code][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.26.5″]

Treadwell, “The Punt Gunner”.

I mean, if there is a positive we can take out of this, we have been consistent with our 1st Round WR’s. Treadwell has followed the Cordarrelle Patterson route: from 1st round pick, to eliminated from the regular offense, to catching a random TD, to gunner on the 1st team punt unit.

I mean, at least the team has finally admitted their mistake and taken the L. If we are paying him, may as well find a job for him, and punt gunner with his size and strength may actually work.

As the dust settled on last night and the news of Odell Beckham Jr being traded to Cleveland sunk in, this easily goes down as the absolute craziest few free agency days I can remember. Ever. In sports. Big names going this way, big names going that way and plenty of mid-level signings along the way. Cole Beasley and John Brown agreed to join the Bills, and hot off the presses Tyrel Williams will be joining Antonio Brown in Oakland to play for the Raiders.

Now what do the Vikings do at WR3?

The Laquon Treadwell experience has been one that most of us want a refund for, and I’m sure the team would love that 1st round pick back as well. The reality is, this is it. Year 4. What are we going to see during Laquon’s last stand? Is this the year he sees the field more? Unfortunately, these are questions we’ve asked every year since he was drafted..

Or… do we see the same guy who drops passes and underperfoms his expectations? Someone who will eventually leave town when his rookie deal is up…

In his first three seasons Treadwell has just 56 receptions for 517 yards and 1 TD. Obviously out of a first round pick anyone would expect more production but if he can’t give it to us, we’ll have to look elsewhere.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.19.14″]

With the league year officially starting this afternoon, here’s a list of potential targets for the Vikings to fill that WR3 spot:

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.19.14″]

Aldrick Robinson

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/1990-19764-original.jpeg” _builder_version=”3.19.14″][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.19.14″]

In what was a down year for the offense, Robinson was probably one of biggest surprises and biggest bright spots of the season. He had just 17 receptions for the Vikings but 5 of those went from TDs of 13, 16, 17, 34 and 40 yards. Robinson more than showed he is capable of being that consistent deep threat while also being a reliable redzone option. What more could the Vikings want to fill that WR3 position? With Robinson’s speed, it allows Thielen to move inside to the slot full-time, which creates even more mismatch nightmares for opposing defenses. Robinson is definitely a name to keep an eye on as Free Agency gets underway.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider max_width=”50%” _builder_version=”3.19.14″ module_alignment=”center”][/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.19.14″]

Pierre Garçon

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/ap_18306031685767.jpg” _builder_version=”3.19.14″][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.19.14″]

Garçon is a very intriguing option, even given his age (32). Garçon and Cousins played together in Washington in ‘15 and ‘16. In those two seasons together Garçon racked up 1,818 yards (included a 1,000 yard season in 2016) which was just the 2nd such season in his career. With those 1,818 yards came 9 TDs.

The chemistry is obviously there. The familiarity is there. Even at 32 years of age, Garçon can play outside, and still stretch a defense. Again, this move for a viable WR3 is most importantly a guy who can play outside and be enough of a threat to let Thielen feast inside. Chemistry and familiarity go a long way in this league. I’d expect some connection to the Vikings here, at the least.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider max_width=”50%” _builder_version=”3.19.14″ module_alignment=”center”][/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.19.14″]

Mike Wallace

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Mike-Wallace.jpg” _builder_version=”3.19.14″][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.19.14″]

Now… Bear with me on this one. Mike Wallace’s first stint in Minnesota didn’t go as planned, but that was with Teddy Bridgewater, who we know struggled some to make the deep throws. Wallace was open a lot when he was here and his speed didn’t go anywhere.

When Wallace got to Baltimore, with big-armed Joe Flacco, we saw a lot more of that speed that got him the big contract in Miami. That came after being a burner in Pittsburgh with, you guessed it, another big-armed QB in Ben Roethlisberger.

A year after leaving Minnesota, and teaming up with Flacco in Baltimore, Wallace had 1,017 yards receiving and 4TDs. The speed was back on display. In fact, it was the 3rd 1,000 yard season of his career, the other two coming with Ben Roethlisberger. Even on a 1-year deal, there could be some value there for the Vikings with a potential burner that Kirk Cousins could drive the ball downfield to.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider max_width=”50%” _builder_version=”3.19.14″ module_alignment=”center”][/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.19.14″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat”]

Prediction:

Aldrick Robinson showed plenty of reasons why he’d be the best option to get re-signed. I like the chemistry idea of Cousins and Garçon being reunited, and think they could rekindle some of that magic from Washington. Mike Wallace coming back though, has me thinking about that speed paired with Cousins’ arm strength… We might just be on to something.

But, at the end of the day, I think the Vikings lean on the side of familiarity and we see Pierre Garçon in purple.
