So while Minnesota Vikings fans continue to lose years of their life worrying about our favorite football team’s quarterback situation, let’s look to Cincinnati, Ohio where Bengals ownership does not seem to understand the invaluable professional sports asset it has in, star quarterback Joe Burrow.

Joe Burrow is clearly over Cincinnati

You might have heard of the 29-year-old former college football National Champion who has completed an all-time NFL record 68.2% of his passes while throwing for 19,735 yards, 148 touchdowns and 48 interceptions over the course of his six-year NFL career.

Well if you haven’t seen the video yet, the 2x Pro Bowl QB met with reporters on Wednesday after Bengals practice. And if you didn’t know better, you’d think he’s about to announce his retirement… or possibly demand a trade.

Neither of those things happened, in the moment. But if nothing else, Joe Cool’s meeting with media members yesterday was a clear and very intentional cry for help.

Burrow: “If I want to keep doing this, I have to have fun doing this. I have been through a lot. If it’s not fun, then what am I doing it for? That is the mind set I am trying to bring to the table.”

Reporter: “You seem frustrated?”

Burrow: “There are just a lot of things going on right now. A lot of things going on.”

Reporter: “Football related or personal?”

Burrow: “All of the above.”

The Minnesota Vikings need to call on Joe Burrow

Just ask former NFL quarterback, Dan Orlovsky, who went on ESPN Radio (“Unsportsmanlike Radio”) Thursday morning and listed the Jets, Raiders and Steelers as three teams that should already be working the phones in Cincinnati, to see if they have any shot at trading for Joe Burrow.

But as our friends at The Purple Persuasion noted, a move to the NFC makes WAY more sense for Burrow than going to any of the three AFC teams Dan mentioned in the below video.

If Joe Burrow is moved to the NFC, he avoids Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes, on any path to a Super Bowl in the near future. And if he is off to an NFC team… is there one that makes more sense than the Minnesota Vikings, who have inarguably the best supporting cast and coaching staff of any other team that needs him?

Unlikely. Plus, one of those supporting cast members is his former LSU teammate, Justin Jefferson. But when recruiting, you have to find the pitches that hit home the most, for the individual you are courting. Not only would football be more fun here, but the Vikings have everything the Bengals do not.

On top of that, the Vikings have some of the best facilities in football and an ownership group that cares more about winning games than it does protecting every cent coming out of its bank account. If you want a MN sports comparison for the Bengals… think the Pohlads of football.

Wait… MN Vikings QB JJ McCarthy was better last week.

Before we continue, it’s worth noting that JJ McCarthy played better last weekend, in the Minnesota Vikings’ 31-0 victory over the hapless Washington Commanders. It was by far the best performance of his NFL career.

The 22-year-old redshirt rookie quarterback completed 16 of 23 passes (69.6%) for 163 yards, 3 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. For the most part, he played on time and in rhythm.

Now, the questions this week in Vikings land surround (a) how much of Minnesota’s game plan against Washington was simplified for JJ McCarthy and (b) did everything against the Commanders look better because of his continued QB development OR was it the defense’s rather basic scheme?

Nobody knows for sure. So, all we can do now is pray, entering week 15 in Dallas, that McCarthy can parlay his bounceback performance against DC into a stepping-stone game on Sunday against the Cowboys, who will be fighting for their playoff lives.

But what if we didn’t have to worry about that? What if we could go back to worrying about how we are going to build a team around a QB that is being paid double, triple, exponentially more than just about everyone else on the roster, like we used to with Kirk Cousins?

Joe Burrow to MN Vikings just makes too much sense

Except, instead of a borderline top-10 quarterback… it’s Joe Burrow, a bona fide top 5 talent at the position? Because you cannot watch Joe Cool’s interview from yesterday and walk away with any certainty that he’ll be in a Cincinnati Bengals uniform next season.

Do whatever you need to do, Kwesi, Kevin O’Connell… the Wilfs! I’m talking to all of you. Go show Joe the NFLPA report cards from the past two seasons, where the Vikings rank near the absolute top of all player happiness categories, while the Cincinnati Bengals are near the bottom.

Sure, all of this has yet to produce much postseason success, but if you put Joe Burrow under center on this exact Vikings team, they go from 5-8 to an immediate Super Bowl contender. Of course, the trade deadline is past and that cannot happen until the offseason. But trust me when I say this, we MN Vikings fans can wait that long.

Vikings’ Next Opponent Takes the Ultimate Blow https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/joe-burrow-injury-out-cincinnati-bengals-week-3/ Mon, 15 Sep 2025 18:00:57 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=68401 Things are bad for the Minnesota Vikings right now. They just watched their young quarterback put up an absolute stinker on Sunday Night Football, in primetime, for the nation to see. Minnesota is also dealing with a list of injuries growing at an unsustainable pace.

They aren’t the Cincinnati Bengals though. Their next opponent now comes to U.S. Bank Stadium with a reality that no NFL franchise wants to deal with. They must replace their starting quarterback.

Joe Burrow out against the Minnesota Vikings

Despite being 2-0, the Cincinnati Bengals are in a tough spot. After suffering a toe injury on Sunday, it was revealed that starting quarterback Joe Burrow will head for surgery and miss three months of action.

Obviously that will keep him out of next Sunday’s contest against Minnesota. The turf toe injury is grade 3 in nature, which is the most significant. He could return in December for Cincinnati, and they’ll need to hold serve in his absence.

Through two games this season, Burrow is 21-of-36 (58.3%) with 189 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. After missing time in 2023, he was named the Comeback Player of the Year last season.

Burrow’s lone game against the Vikings came back in 2021. He bested the Mike Zimmer-led team in Week 1 at home. The Bengals needed overtime, but emerged victorious with a 27-24 score.

Another Jake Browning revenge game for MN Vikings

The Bengals backup quarterback, Jake Browning, took over for Burrow on Sunday. He finished 21-of-32 for 241 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Despite the lackluster outing, it was enough to get the job done and hold on for a 31-27 victory.

Browning is a former member of the Minnesota Vikings practice squad. He signed with Cincinnati in 2021 after three seasons in Minnesota. Now with 13 NFL games under his belt, the 14th (and eighth start) will come against his former employer.

This isn’t Browning’s first rodeo against Minnesota either. In 2023 he started in place of an injured Joe Burrow and beat Minnesota 27-24 in overtime at home. That was a Kevin O’Connell-coached team, but the Vikings were rolling with Nick Mullens in place of an injured Kirk Cousins.

In that contest Browning was 29-of-42 for 324 yards, a pair of touchdowns, and one interception. O’Connell will need to make sure that history doesn’t repeat itself, and defensive coordinator Brian Flores will be looking for a better effort as well.

Justin Jefferson Takes Huge Dump on Kirk Cousins While Comparing Him to Joe Burrow https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/justin-jefferson-takes-huge-dump-on-kirk-cousins-while-comparing-him-to-joe-burrow/ Tue, 11 May 2021 20:37:01 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=34981

Well it’s Tuesday, May 11 and that probably means it’s a good day for Minnesota Vikings fans to fight over Kirk Cousins on Twitter. This time, however, the fuel has been tossed onto the fire by our favorite 2021 NFL rookie, Justin Jefferson.

That’s right, JJ came after Kirk Cousins today while doing an interview on Collin Cowherd’s “The Herd” radio show. He didn’t mean to do it but, yikes, you have to talk better than this. When I ran into this video, I thought the caption was just Twitter being Twitter. But then you press play and quickly realize it’s 45 seconds of Justin Jefferson shitting on Kirk Cousins (just like the caption says) in favor of Joe Burrow.

Kirk Cousins vs Joe Burrow (according to Justin Jefferson)

Cowherd starts the video by asking how Burrow and Cousins are similar and how they are different. I’ll transcribe Jefferson’s answer below, just in case you aren’t able to turn your sound up where you are.

Similar? Kirk and Joe throw similar balls. They’re not the strongest arm but they’re going to get it to you exactly where you need them to throw it, you know what I’m saying? But the thing about Joe that’s a little bit different. Joe… umm, I feel like Joe has a little bit more swagger, you know? He has that confidence on the field and, I mean, he’s not scared to get hit. And I feel like, as a quarterback, that’s a big trait to have, especially to be as young as he is. You know, he’s a phenomenal quarterback.

Justin Jefferson on The Herd (video above)

Whoa….

Look, maybe Jefferson praises Kirk Cousins right before this or 5 minutes later, who knows (you can see the full interview below). But there’s a point to be made even before you see the rest. JJ can’t give media outlets sound clips like this to run with. A clip of this nature can (and will) blow up in today’s social media world.

Joe Burrow isn’t your quarterback anymore, Justin. Kirk Cousins is. You play for the Vikings, not Tigers. I love honesty but you have to talk better than this when a microphone and camera are sitting in front of your face.

You were asked to compare Burrow and Cousins. So by saying, “the thing about Joe that’s a little bit different…” ‘is his swagger, confidence and fearlessness while in the pocket’, you’re saying Kirk lacks in those areas.

Of course media outlets are going to pounce on this. I mean, what does something like this say about JJ’s thought process when he gets in THE VIKINGS huddle with Kirk Cousins, especially if the game is on the line? I know I’m concerned… Here is the full interview.
