They just watched their young quarterback put up an absolute stinker on Sunday Night Football, in primetime, for the nation to see. Minnesota is also dealing with a list of injuries growing at an unsustainable pace.

They aren’t the Cincinnati Bengals though. Their next opponent now comes to U.S. Bank Stadium with a reality that no NFL franchise wants to deal with. They must replace their starting quarterback.

Joe Burrow out against the Minnesota Vikings

Despite being 2-0, the Cincinnati Bengals are in a tough spot. After suffering a toe injury on Sunday, it was revealed that starting quarterback Joe Burrow will head for surgery and miss three months of action.

Obviously that will keep him out of next Sunday’s contest against Minnesota. The turf toe injury is grade 3 in nature, which is the most significant. He could return in December for Cincinnati, and they’ll need to hold serve in his absence.

Through two games this season, Burrow is 21-of-36 (58.3%) with 189 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. After missing time in 2023, he was named the Comeback Player of the Year last season.

Burrow’s lone game against the Vikings came back in 2021. He bested the Mike Zimmer-led team in Week 1 at home. The Bengals needed overtime, but emerged victorious with a 27-24 score.

Another Jake Browning revenge game for MN Vikings

The Bengals backup quarterback, Jake Browning, took over for Burrow on Sunday. He finished 21-of-32 for 241 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Despite the lackluster outing, it was enough to get the job done and hold on for a 31-27 victory.

Browning is a former member of the Minnesota Vikings practice squad. He signed with Cincinnati in 2021 after three seasons in Minnesota. Now with 13 NFL games under his belt, the 14th (and eighth start) will come against his former employer.

This isn’t Browning’s first rodeo against Minnesota either. In 2023 he started in place of an injured Joe Burrow and beat Minnesota 27-24 in overtime at home. That was a Kevin O’Connell-coached team, but the Vikings were rolling with Nick Mullens in place of an injured Kirk Cousins.

In that contest Browning was 29-of-42 for 324 yards, a pair of touchdowns, and one interception. O’Connell will need to make sure that history doesn’t repeat itself, and defensive coordinator Brian Flores will be looking for a better effort as well.

Jake Browning Admits Revenge Game Mindset vs Vikings: ‘They Never Should Have Cut Me’ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/jake-browning-revenge-game-vikings/ Sun, 17 Dec 2023 03:29:31 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=45770 The Minnesota Vikings found a way to lose vs the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday afternoon and I don’t think there are very many football fans crowning QB Jake Browning as the Bengals’ MVP. That won’t stop him from feeling that way, though.

Jake Browning Revenge Game vs Minnesota Vikings

And for Browning, week 15 was about revenge, whether he was willing to admit it earlier in the week or not. The Vikings were Browning’s first team and, after two years on the practice squad, he was cut by the Spielman/Zimmer regime without as much as a personal phone call from anyone other than his agent.

“There was definitely a little extra part of… you know, just before the game… Like, I remember getting cut [from the Vikings] the last time and just being told, ‘hey, we might have a spot for you on practice squad. Go to the hotel and wait.’

So I sat in the hotel for a couple hours, not knowing if I had a job or not, and then just basically got a call from my agent that, you know, they didn’t even.. they didn’t tell me. I’d been there for two years and you know. I’ve been cut my fair share of times and that was probably the shitties one.”

Browning admitted that there aren’t a lot of people left running the Vikings organization who were there when he was on the practice squad, before eventually being cut. But, athletes will reach for anything they can to get an extra edge.

‘They Never Should Have Cut Me!’

For Browning, Minnesota cutting him all those years ago was an obvious narrative for him to grasp ahold of, even if he knows that the Vikings now are not the Vikings from back then. Still, it didn’t stop him from finding a camera after the game so he could scream, ‘they never should have cut me’ into it.

“That one felt good. I think, right after we made the field goal to win the game, I screamed at a camera, ‘they never should have cut me’.

And after further review, Browning did in-fact scream, ‘they never should have cut me’ into a camera after the game. Pretty weird thing to plan out but you do you, king.

I’m happy Jake could have his revenge game moment vs the Vikings, even if the Bengals victory had a lot more to do with everyone around him than it actually did him. Either way, the NFL is skeptical and called Browning in for a drug test first thing in the morning.

Vikings Notes: Bengals Sign Jake Browning; Wednesday Practice Important for Anthony Barr https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/vikings-notes-bengals-sign-jake-browning-wednesday-practice-important-for-anthony-barr/ Tue, 07 Sep 2021 20:51:54 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=36166 The 2021 NFL football season is upon us and the excitement is at a palpable level. On that week 1 slate is a matchup vs Mike Zimmer’s old team, the Cincinnati Bengals, that the Minnesota Vikings really need to win. Bringing the defense back up to competent pre-2020 levels is a big part of that victorious formula. Plenty of additions have been made but such improvement is easier said than done, especially without Anthony Barr, the team’s pre-snap leader on that side of the football.

Barr’s been out with what we believe is a knee injury, since August 5, but the Vikings have never given up on his week one status. That doesn’t mean his possible absence hasn’t already been discussed in-house. They probably have a better idea inside of TCO Performance Center but Chad Graff (The Athletic) believes we all might have a clearer picture of Barr’s week one status by this time tomorrow.

“Better on Paper” or “Paper Thin”?

The blogs and articles have been written from here to main street media. The Minnesota Vikings look like a much improved defense, on paper. They didn’t make any additions at linebacker, however. In fact, they lost Eric Wilson in free agency. If there was ever a time that this roster needed Anthony Barr the most, it’s right now.

A rather large mix of injury returnees and aging free agents have patched up Mike Zimmer’s worst-ever Vikings defense but ripping off any of those used band-aids could reveal the most infected parts of last year’s team once again. A mystery injury sidelining Anthony Barr for week one would be a bad way to kick it all off.

Bengals playing chess?

Clearly, they’re laying heavy importance on week 1 over in northern Ohio as well. In a chess-like maneuver this afternoon, the Cincinnati Bengals signed former Vikings Training Camp All-Star QB, Jake Browning, to their practice squad. I’m sure this under-the-radar move won’t keep Mike Zimmer up at all the next few nights.

I’d love to shrug this off and make fun of its stupidity but signing Jake Browning a brilliant move by the Bengals. Will it make or break the game? Maybe not, but it’s a move that could gain the Bengals some extra insight on what the Vikings are trying to do offensively and it will ABSOLUTELY get into Mike Zimmer’s head.

Now, there’s only one obvious counterstrike for Rick Spielman to make.

Youngest Offense in NFL

In other news that may or may not matter, the Minnesota Vikings have the youngest offense in the NFL, according to OvertheCap.com. Because Adam Thielen and Kirk Cousins get a lot of attention, it’s easy to forget just how young the offense is.

Dalvin Cook, for example, just turned 26 and star receiver, Justin Jefferson is barely 22. And without Riley Reiff to hold down the left side of the offensive line, its youth is front and center. Outside of Rashod Hill (29), who (we hope) isn’t a permanent starter at LT, the front-five doesn’t touch 27. Center Garrett Bradbury is the next oldest at 26 years and 79 days.
