It claims host of over 3500 teams across the United States and often crosses lines with other popular leagues, including the EYBL.

Teams you may have heard of include “D1 Minnesota“, which has included local high school top prospects, turned college superstars like Jamison Battle (Minnesota, Ohio State), Patrick McCaffery (Iowa), Matthew Hurt (Duke), Race Thompson (Indiana), Jericho Sims (Texas).

Their 2025 team includes Cedric Tomes, who committed to the Minnesota Gophers and new head coach Niko Medved on Saturday, for the class of 2026. Later that same day, the Prep Hoops Circuit was holding a widely anticipated AAU tournament called the “Battle of the Lakes” at Eden Prairie High School, just west of Minneapolis.

Eden Prairie high school gym PACKED for Battle of the Lakes Prep Hoops Tournament…

When I say widely anticipated, I mean this was the most packed Minnesota gym I have seen… possibly ever. The gym was way over capacity, to the point where fans were literally shoulder to shoulder all the way up to the court. Here is a clip from the Fresh Coast Hoops YouTube account, which was filming the event.

At the end of the short video, the aforementioned Gopher commit Cedric Tomes hits a first half buzzer beater to give D1 Minnesota a halftime lead over the Rod Wave Elite. Look at the crowd, though. It’s so packed that there isn’t a foot to be had anywhere in the gym. Fans are being pushed all the way up to the court.

It doesn’t take a “get off my lawn” 36-year-old old man like me to see that the situation last night at Eden Prairie High School was beyond the line teetering between “spectacular event” and “pending disaster”.

Then… fights and chaos break out

According to multiple reports, Prep Hoops did not abide by their rental agreement with EP High School, which mandates they keep crowds under gym capacity. Multiple media outlets have reached out to Prep Hoops for comment, but have not heard back.

Related: Ben Johnson was the NIL Problem for Gophers Men’s Basketball

But news isn’t made with over-capacity crowds. It’s made when a melee breaks out in that huge crowd, especially when there are phones around to record much of it. The fight that started everything and is making its way around the internet is this one. From here, it appears all hell broke loose inside the Eden Prairie high school.

Before you knew it, there were over 100 police officers summoned to Eden Prairie High School, including the “Trooper 9” helicopter. People were seemingly running around causing all sorts of havoc, not just in the gym, but throughout the entire school. After the area was finally cleared around 8 PM CDT, official reports from all the local media outlets say that the “multiple fights” that broke out were all “minor”.

I’m not sure if they are trying to downplay the chaos that took place last night. But what was caught on video and the back-and-forth relayed from the police scanner between officers and dispatch (via the “MN Crime Watchers” group on Facebook group)… seemed like anything but minor.

  • There is a group of 30-40 kids running around inside the high school and they are refusing to listen to officers.
  • There is a large group on the 3rd floor of the high school
  • Trooper 9 (helicopter) just arrived overhead if needed
  • Most followed instructions but there are still kids running around all over the place. Some ar hiding.
  • 7:15 PM: UPDATE for All Units. The school is pretty much cleared of mayhem. we have a couple of teams of officers who will escort the teams that are hiding to their buses. Once we got those buses on the move, we will continue to clear the remaining kids running amuck inside the school and clear the lot.
  • Asking for assistance from Trooper 9 to assist from overhead on traffic control and routing out of the area.
  • We believe the violent offenders have made their way out of here

Minnesotans Might Account for 10% of NBA Draftees in 2020 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/gophers-basketball/minnesotans-might-account-for-10-of-nba-draftees-in-2020/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/gophers-basketball/minnesotans-might-account-for-10-of-nba-draftees-in-2020/#respond Thu, 21 May 2020 00:10:45 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=24185

Minnesota has produced 57 NBA and ABA players over the course of the league’s existence. The biggest name of course is Kevin McHale, but there are numerous other players that have been some-what impactful during their careers. Tyus Jones, Kris Humphries, Gary Trent Jr., Joel Przybilla, and Cole Aldrich to name a few.

High School Recruitment

As the world keeps changing, so do the ways of scouting high school talent in all sports. That includes the opening of doors for players from smaller states and lesser-known basketball hotspots, that would’ve been locked shut previously.

With that, Minnesota has blossomed as a high school basketball hot spot. Look where all of these local kids land on ESPN’s 100 over the past six years:

  • Tyus Jones, Apple Valley, MN: 4th in ESPN’s 2014 Top 100
  • Rashad Vaughn, Golden Valley, MN: 19th in ESPN’s 2014 Top 100
  • Reid Travis, Minneapolis, MN: 27th in ESPN’s 2014 Top 100
  • Amir Coffey, Hopkins, MN: 33rd in ESPN’s 2016 Top 100
  • Gary Trent Jr., Apple Valley, MN: 8th in ESPN’s 2017 Top 100
  • Jericho Sims, Minneapolis, MN: 67th in ESPN’s 2017 Top 100
  • Nate Reuvers, Lakeville, MN: 86th in ESPN’s 2017 Top 100
  • Tre Jones, Apple Valley, MN: 17th in ESPN’s 2018 Top 100
  • Daniel Oturu, Saint Paul, MN: 57th in ESPN’s 2018 Top 100
  • Matthew Hurt, Rochester, MN: 11th in ESPN’s 2019 Top 100
  • Zeke Nnaji, Hopkins, MN: 49th in ESPN’s 2019 Top 100

This doesn’t include the likes of Jalen Suggs, Dawson Garcia, Dain Dainja, Chet Holmgren or Kendall Brown, who all make appearances in the Top 100 for their respective future classes.

Upcoming NBA Draft

With the 2019-2020 NBA season hanging in the balance, we can’t say for sure when the 2020 NBA Draft will take place. We know the Lottery and Combine are already postponed, so we can safely assume the Draft will be too.

With the postponement of the NBA Draft, the NCAA did the right thing (for once) and pushed back the date for players to withdraw their names from the process, if they choose.

When the draft does come (which it will in one form or another) we can expect to see at least four Minnesota products get their names called, with a small possibility of that number jumping to six.

2020 NBA Draft Sure-Fire Picks from Minnesota

Tre Jones, G – Duke

Tre followed in his brother’s footsteps and attended Duke University. However, with only an average season during his Freshman campaign, Jones decided to play one more season at Duke before declaring for the Draft. He is a solid defender and distributor, suggesting he will have a solid backup role at the next level. He is projected to go late-first round to early-second round in most mocks. The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor has Jones at 32nd on his big board.

Tyrell Terry, G – Stanford

After a solid Freshman season at Stanford, Terry declared for the NBA Draft. While he may be slightly undersized, he possesses a smooth jumper that should transition to the NBA well. Experts are all over the board on Terry, but Kevin O’Connor has the De La Salle product 8th on his big board. Terry could very well slide down during the draft, but expect him to stay in the first round.

Daniel Oturu, C – Minnesota

Likely a second round guy, Oturu put on a clinic at the U this past season and his name rose up the draft boards. With solid athleticism, rebounding, and post moves, Oturu should be able to provide at the next level. O’Connor has Oturu at 44th on his big board, but don’t be surprised if he’s taken before that.

Zeke Nnaji, C – Arizona

Nnaji is a very solid athlete and should be a two-way player at the next level. At 6’11” 240 lbs, Zeke has the body to bang with other bigs around the league. Some mocks have the Hopkins Star going undrafted, but I’m confident he will be taken in the second round. Kevin O’Connor likes Nnaji and places him 42nd on his big board, two spots ahead of Oturu.

2020 NBA Draft Wild Cards from Minnesota:

McKinley Wright, G – Colorado

Wright is a player that Gopher fans hoped to sign after he decommited from Dayton due to a coaching change. However, former the Minnesota Mr. Basketball chose Colorado over the U because Pitino signed Isaiah Washington. Wright is not projected to be drafted in many mocks, but he has a chance and should at least get a look as an undrafted free agent. Wright is keeping the door open for a return to college.

Both Gach, G/F – Utah

A former Austin High School star, Gach declared for the NBA Draft, but likely will go undrafted. With a couple years of college eligibility, Gach will look to transfer if he pulls his name from the draft pool (possibly back to Minnesota).

While unlikely that all six are selected, we have a chance to see a handful of former high school hoops stars playing at the highest level.

As an 8th grade Trejuan Holloman was already playing Varsity at Minneapolis North High School. View by many as the best player in Minnesota in his class. For his Freshman Year, and now Sophomore, he’s been the starting point guard for Cretin-Derham Hall (His Mom Crystal Flint is the Varsity Girls Head Coach).

Going into his Freshman year, Holloman has a few coming out moments. One, playing Howard Pulley Hoops he had this dunk, at a camp he ran the floor and threw down there, and don’t forget about this one at the CP3 camp.

Suddenly the 2022 point guard was on everyone’s basketball radar. Then, in one of his first Freshman football games, he picked off a pass and went 99 yards for a TD.

All of this brings us to now. Holloman has at least 7 Division 1 offers for basketball including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Marquette, Texas and Baylor; with Michigan State standing by. Since Tre is a 2022 Sophomore, there isn’t much for reliable rankings yet so we’ll have to see where he ends up.

Holloman’s background and tutelage, mixed with his athletic skillset, makes him shine as point guard prospect and he the stats back it up. While playing Howard Pulley 17U he averaged 3.4 assists and a steal per game.

As a Freshman at CDH he posted a 10.5/4/9.5 stat line while also getting 2.6 steals per game. Now 7 games into his Sophomore year he’s posting 12.1/4/9 while stealing 3.7 balls a game. Improving on already gaudy numbers with an offer list like what he has, is what brings in the stars when the rankings roll out.

Q: I know the Gophers have offered you, and a few other Big10 teams, what do you think of the Gophers?

A: They’re a good team very fun to watch.

Q: Your Mom went to Minnesota, does that have any extra impact on you to follow her and go there?

A: Nah not really.

Q: I remember last year I posted a highlight of one game of yours. Your Mom comment on Twitter about she liked I left in the turnover as a way of you seeing your mistake. You chased down the play for a block BTW, how much of an influence does she have on your game?

A: She has a lot because she taught me the fundamentals of playing basketball like how to pass correctly, how to dribble, how to play defense and just that Kill mentality.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_code _builder_version=”4.0.9″ hover_enabled=”0″] [/et_pb_code][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.0.9″ hover_enabled=”0″]

Q: Having that influence seems like a great advantage, do you use the knowledge she’s passed on to you to help others learn like your teammates?

A: Yes, being a point guard my teammates listen to me and what I have to say all the time and I learn from them too.

Q: You guys got a big win earlier this month on Minnehaha Academy in a good game after a tough opener vs Eden Prairie. And since the offense seems to be clicking, what’s been the keys for you early?

A: For us as a team?

Q: For you and the team.

A: Our defense creates our offense so if we get a stop, we get out in get fast break points. Also, we move the ball very well. I got good shooters on the wing Amari, Curtis, and J’vonne, and it makes it easier for me because I’m a pass first point guard. If the defense collapses on me, then I got a shooter to the right, or to the left of me, and I have a good post player, Will Burke who can make the layup if I give it to him.

Q: You and J’vonne played together with Pulley this summer. I chatted with him last week, you feel you 2 develop chemistry before he joined CDH this year?

A: Yes of course because I know he’s a scorer and he knows I’m a passer so I know where his sweet spots is so it makes it easier for the both of us.

Q: Do you plan to continue on as a 2 sport athlete in football and basketball?

A: Oh course.

Q: Do you or would you play both at the college level if you could?

A: Yes.

Q: I saw you were a DB last year in football, did you play offense this past season?

A: Yes I was a WR and played a little QB.

Q: Are you in line for more reps at QB?

A: Yes I am.

Q: How much does playing football help with basketball and vise-versa?

A: It for sure keeps me in shape and also helps with my quickness and helps me get stronger.

Better late than never…

On Monday, Minnesotas High School Basketball Hall of Fame’s inaugural class was announced. Yup… It took this long for MN High School Basketball to create a HOF for former athletes. The hall, which is to be located at Target Center, is unrelated to the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) version. The main difference between the two lies with the type of inductees.  The newly formed basketball-based royalty will be highly focused on athletes. If you visited the MSHSL shrine at their offices in Brooklyn Center, you will see that it is centered around coaches and administrators.

For a committee of longtime high school basketball coaches, reporters and others, Monday’s news was a long time coming. Those individuals have been working towards this goal since 2011, when they ventured to create this honor. After 7 years of perseverance, and sorting through over 100 years of history, their original class has officially been announced. As for the reaction of those selected?

You’d imagine it was something like this:

The group of 14 initial selections includes 9 players, 1 advocate, 2 coaches, a team, and a dynasty. The most notable, Kevin McHale (Hibbing – 1976) and Lindsay Whalen (Hutchinson – 2000), will be joined by the other Minnesota high school basketball legends below:

Inductees:

The first official class will be enshrined on March 26 at the Mayo Clinic Square. Also that evening, they will be featured during halftime of the Timberwolves vs. Grizzlies game. As for whether or not the honorees will receive jackets, due to this being the first year, it’s not clear. In they event they do, I wonder if it’ll be gold like the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Moving forward, to be eligible for induction, coaches must be at least 15 years into their coaching career. As for players, they can’t be selected until at least 10 years after finishing high school.

For those of you already wondering, Tyus Jones graduated from Apple Valley in 2014.
