He joined the Golden Gophers staff as a quality control coach in 2017, later being promoted to defensive line coach in 2018 and later interim defensive coordinator. Top Minnesota Golden Gophers defensive coordinator candidates

Joe Klanderman, Kansas State defensive coordinator

Recruiting means ties to a region matter. Fleck doesn’t just have to look for a defensive coordinator who can be a respected voice in the locker room, mentor young athletes and orchestrate a good defense, he’d also like someone who knows the region. Look no further than Joe Klanderman.

While the Kansas State Wildcats defensive coordinator was born in Wisconsin, he played defensive line at Minnesota State (1997-2001). After finishing his playing career, Klanderman’s leadership and defensive intellect was so well-respected that Minnesota State immediately made him its defensive line coach after his playing days were over. He was later promoted to defensive backs coach, before coaching linebackers and serving as the Mavericks’ defensive coordinator (2007-’13).

• Kansas State Wildcats defense 2023: 55.91% completion rate allowed, 28.67% third-down conversion rate allowed, 2.0 takeaways per game, 121.0 QB rating allowed

While Klanderman’s defense ranked outside the top 80 in total yardage allowed, that doesn’t tell the whole story. Kansas State had one of the best pass defenses in college football and this unit was phenomenal on third downs. Klanderman’s ties to Minnesota could entice him to take the Gophers’ job, if Fleck decides that he’s a good fit.

Corey Hetherman, Rutgers linebackers coach

With Joe Harasymiak staying at Rutgers. If that happens, Fleck could pursue an alternative that would have a huge endorsement from Harasymiak. Scarlet Knights linebackers coach Corey Hetherman joined the program in 2022, hand-picked by Harasymiak to develop Rutgers’ linebackers. Before that, Hetherman was the defensive play-caller at James Madison (2019-’21).

• Rutgers Scarlet Knights defense 2023: 332.5 total ypg allowed (28th), 5.0 yards per play allowed (30th), 22.6 points per game allowed (32nd), 40.54% third-down conversion rate allowed (82nd)

James Madison finished all three seasons with Hetherman as a top-10 scoring defense in the nation. Not only did the Dukes lead the country in turnovers (31) in 2021, but they also held opponents under 90 rushing yards per game with a third-down defense (27.2% conversion rate) that was one of the best marks in college football. Heterman enjoyed similar success as Maine’s defensive coordinator.

Leadership is obviously another factor Fleck is considering during his search. Hetherman offers that trait, serving as associate head coach at James Madison where he worked under Curt Cignetti, one of the most well-respected head coaches in the Group of Five. Minnesota would be the next step up in Hetherman’s career and he could also help the Golden Gophers’ defense take a step forward in 2024.

Geoff Collins, former Georgia Tech head coach

When searching for a defensive coordinator, one of the best avenues for a program to take is pursuing former head coaches. Zach Arnett was one of the options we considered for Gophers defensive coordinator candidates, but he might take a year off after being fired by Mississippi State. Instead, our focus shifts to Geoff Collins.

There’s no getting around the fact that Collins wasn’t cut out to be a head coach. He had two opportunities at Temple and Georgia Tech, but finished with a 25-38 record. However, Collins’ track record as a defensive coordinator, including outstanding stints in the SEC, speaks volumes about his mind for the game.

Collins, fired in 2022, is likely ready to get back on the sideline. While he doesn’t have direct ties to Fleck, Collins is part of Nick Saban’s coaching tree. A year away from the game can often also make a coach better, providing them time to study offenses and conceptualize new schemes, blitzes and coverages to be more effective. Collins might be expensive, but he would make Minnesota’s defense better than it was in 2023.

Greg Gasparato, Troy Trojans defensive coordinator

When Jon Sumrall left the Troy Trojans to become Tulane’s head coach, defensive coordinator Greg Gasparato was named interim coach for the bowl game. A program turning to its defensive coordinator during a time of uncertainty speaks to Gasparato’s leadership. Now, let’s focus on the football side of things.

• Troy Trojans defense 2023: 312.2 total ypg allowed (14th), 4.6 yards per play allowed (11th), 16.1 points per game allowed (6th), 32.53% third-down conversion rate (21st)

Name the statistic, Troy’s defense was one of the best in college football this fall under Gasparato. It didn’t rely on takeaways to slow down opponents and consistently keep them off the field. Troy ranked seventh in punts per offensive score (1.8), better than the Georgia Bulldogs and Texas Longhorns. It had the 12th-best scoring defense in the second half of games and had a top-25 defense in the red zone.

With Troy already naming its head coach for 2024, Gasparato will be looking for another opportunity to prove himself as a defensive play-caller. He’s also experienced, working with safeties and linebackers at Louisville (2021-’22) and serving as Army’s co-defensive coordinator in 2020. If the Rutgers connections don’t pan out for Fleck, Gasparato would be a sneaky option for Minnesota.

The University of Minnesota Gophers football team picked up a big time commitment for their top-25 2021 recruiting class on Sunday afternoon! Justin Walley is a 5’10” cornerback out of D’Iberville high school in Mississippi. He’s also a track star, making him a two sport athlete. This kid can flat out fly (video below).

Walley committed to Minnesota over big name (and much more local) schools like Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Baylor and Arkansas, to name a few.

The Gophers 2021 class currently ranks 23rd in the nation (according to 247Sports. The Gophers have built some impressive depth in the defensive backfield with the 2021 class. Two of their top three recruits, Avante Dickerson and Steven Ortiz Jr, are also cornerbacks.

MJ Daniels is another highly-rated defensive back out of Mississippi, who already announced a top four that didn’t include the Minnesota Gophers… (Mississippi State, Georgia, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M). But hey, we didn’t say it. He did.

No matter, the addition of Walley just makes one of the best recruiting classes we have seen from this program, even better. There is a lot to be excited about around the U of M campus even if we don’t know when football will actually be played.

Big Ten football has been trying to clean up its own mess since its decision to postpone the 2020 season earlier this month. The move has made the conference look extremely foolish, to say the least. Not only have PJ Fleck, the Gophers, and every other team in the conference been scrambling to figure out how to get ready for a season they don’t know will ever start.

We also have players’ parents sending in letters and statements to the league, stating concerns. Some have even gone as far as traveling to Chicago to literally knock on the commissioner’s (office) door.

Yet the cancelation and subsequent anger within the Big Ten states and fan bases are only one part of the story. What many aren’t talking about, is recruiting and how coaches are juggling their incoming 2021 class amid all these moving parts. Most importantly, what is Minnesota head coach, PJ Fleck, doing to keep his commits’ oars in the water?

Sadly, the bitter reality: The Big Ten better hope the SEC, ACC and Big 12 eventually cancel fall football as well. If not, Big Ten is damaged in so many ways, financially, competitively, recruiting-wise, etc. Lots and lots of important people ticked off by the suddenness.

Mass Recruiting Exodus Unlikely

In all reality, a mass exodus of recruits from any Big Ten school is unlikely. These players, like Steven Ortiz, committed for reasons too big to die this easily. You’d sure hope it would take more than one season of no competition for incoming players to start defecting. Southern schools are still going to try their damndest…

One of Minnesota’s top commitments for the 2021 class, Steven Ortiz is already feeling the heat. It doesn’t seem to weigh on him though. Ortiz told me he isn’t going anywhere. The communication and trust he has in PJ Fleck and RTB culture shows.

“Schools try to talk to me, but I am 100% committed to Minnesota, and I let them know that… I am focused on my season right now and I hope those guys get to have a season.”

“I talk to coach Fleck all the time and he pretty much always tells me just to stay positive and control what I can control.”

From all accounts, Fleck has shown nothing but genuine care and interest in his players. That’s a trait that’s becoming even more crucial during this pandemic and shifting college football landscape.

Recruiting in the Future

While it may not hurt the Gophers on the recruiting trail in 2021, not playing football this year could impact PJ Fleck’s ability to recruit the south going forward. The Gophers haven’t been a national powerhouse since the 60’s but Fleck has still done a good job recruiting against helmet schools in the south.

Minnesota has pulled the likes of Rashod Bateman (GA), Daniel Faalele (FL) and Curtis Dunlap (FL) from the area in recent years. Those individuals may not have been the five-stars more established schools attract, but to pull southern four-stars to Minnesota when nobody down there even knows we exist, is a feat in itself.

So how does the Big Ten’s postponement impact the Gopher’s future? According to 247Sports Composite Ratings from Southern states, the Gophers rank only behind Nebraska for Big Ten West schools who most often lure Top-1000 recruits up from the south.

Fleck has made clear how important recruiting the south is. If the Big Ten isn’t playing football and southern universities are, Fleck’s footprint in football country could shrink…. but I don’t see it.

Yes, the decision to postpone hits hard but if the University of Minnesota didn’t care about athletics (especially football), Fleck wouldn’t be the head coach and Mark Coyle wouldn’t be Athletic Director. The team also wouldn’t be primed to build off their 11-2 record in 2019.

Not the End of the World

This is not the end of the world for the Big Ten or the University of Minnesota football program…. at least not yet. If the pandemic takes a prolonged time to end and the conference doesn’t make better decisions leading into the 2021 season, then all bets are off. But as of right now, Fleck’s constant positive energy should be enough to keep his recruits in the boat.

It highlights how great of a player’s coach Fleck is and how he has rebuilt the program’s image from scratch. If there is anything Fleck’s recruits have shown, it is empathy. With the likes of Steven Ortiz wanting the current group of guys to play the season they deserve.

Recruits like Steven Ortiz get it. They are going through similar situations, themselves, unsure about their last high school seasons. It will take more than an opportunistic pitch from Dabo Swinney to sway recruits away from the Gophers. Just keep rowing the boat and everything will be fine.

Keep an Eye Out for the “Two For One”…

With the postponement of the 2020 season being potentially moved to early 2021, questions have arisen regarding early enrollees for the upcoming class. Could one player be eligible for two seasons in one calendar year if football is played in the spring after freshman enroll early? If they were to play that year (2 seasons), would it eat up one year of eligibility or two?

Both Ohio State’s Ryan Day and Purdue’s Jeff Brohm, have come out with differing plans for a spring or winter season. There is a lot of politicking going on.

Ryan Day pitched the idea of incoming players playing a two-for-one calendar year, last week. This may be a non-starter for leagues that are playing in the fall but you can’t fault him for trying. The pitch makes even more sense when SEC, ACC, and Big XII schools are trying to poach top incoming recruits.

The question is whether 2021 recruits are playing this fall and thinking of enrolling early.

The Big Ten is a mess right now when it comes to football. After initially planning on a ten-game, conference-only season, the conference’s university presidents voted to punt the season to 2021 earlier this week. This has brought up questions as to what the conference’s next move will be with COVID-19 still being an ever-present “threat“.

Spring Season?

At the moment, it looks like the Big Ten wants to try and hold a spring season. Yet after sitting on their hands for three months trying to decide what to do, it wouldn’t be surprising if there is no football at all in the 2020-21 school year.

Had it been up to the players, the chances of a fall season would have increased. But in a world where college athletes continually have their voices suppressed, that was never on the table. Shocker!

Yet the current objective is to play in the spring. That in and of itself brings up a slew of questions that the league (and god forbid, the NCAA) needs to figure out ASAP. How long will the season be? Will teams be playing in a pseudo-bubble? What about early enrollees and players wanting to retain eligibility? There is even the whole issue of those players who are draft eligible.

Looking solely at a spring season, Purdue’s head coach Jeff Brohm came out with what a preliminary season could look like. It is highlighted by an eight-game season with NO BYES and running from late February to May. I bet Brohm feels like he is such a smart guy right now.

But this would be an absolute shit show plan to go with. Players need more than three months between seasons and those with NFL aspirations likely wouldn’t play. Thus creating a power vacuum within the conference. So what does the Big Ten do?

Winter Season?

They should go with a winter season. Ohio State’s Ryan Day candidly discussed plans for a season more focused during the winter months. Beginning on, or shortly after January 1st and extending through February. This would give plenty of time to adjust dates, potentially allow early enrollees and NFL prospects the chance to play, while also maintaining season integrity.

It makes sense why Day would spearhead this idea too. With the Buckeyes ranked second in the preseason Coaches’ Poll, he and his players want to win it all. Having only one year of star quarterback Justin Fields likely plays into his cause too. Yet his plan makes sense.

Sure, teams would have to play in frigid temperatures or find a nearby domed facility to play, but it is the best course of action for everybody. It gives every player a chance to play, if they want to, while also protecting their bodies from two full seasons in a shortened calendar year.

“We’ve got some work to do. I don’t know the answer, but I’m going to fight like heck for these guys to push for what we think is right. There will be some back and forth and conceding some points, but as I sit here right now, I feel pretty strongly about what I’ve said and I’m going to work hard to get it done.”

Day’s, and even Brohm’s, leadership is exactly what the Big Ten needs right now. With new commissioner and former Vikings executive Kevin Warren and most university presidents screwing the pooch on each athletic decision, they should incorporate those actually playing and coaching into their meetings.

I am absolutely on board with a winter season. While it is worse than playing in the fall and watching the other conferences play on without a likely hitch, it is better than seeing top talent succumb to piss-poor decisions. It will give fans of the most prestigious conference in the country something to warm those cold winters.

How Do the Gophers Line Up?

The Gophers would benefit from this plan too. If they chose to move indoors, the Vikings would likely be willing to offer US Bank Stadium as an option. But even if they had to play at TCF Bank Stadium, the opportunity to potentially have fans and to play nullifies having to play in freezing weather. These players want to play, damn it!

This plan also allows for those players who may be under-the-radar for the NFL to make a statement. Look at the Gophers’ Tyler Johnson and Antoine Winfield Jr. or LSU’s Joe Burrow last year. They were all arguably NFL talents, and if they were, it was to be as projects or roster depth to start. But after putting up spectacular seasons, it shot them up the boards. Which led to Johnson being drafted in the fifth round, Winfield Jr. in the second, and Burrow as the first overall pick.

While the 2020 Gophers are more of a household name after their 2019 campaign, the likes of and Tanner Morgan and others would have one final opportunity to impress scouts and better their futures.

Questionable Decision Making

What is even more baffling is the data they used to make the cancellation decision. The Big Ten cited ten players known to have underlying conditions that could be impacted by the pandemic. Yet as I mentioned previously, those players can opt-out and leave the young, healthy, and hungry players to carry on. Even with older coaches, other leagues have found ways to protect those most vulnerable. So why can’t the Big Ten?

A winter season makes too much sense. But so did a fall season. Yet a lack of facts and transparency has ruled the day for the Big Ten. This has allowed for fear and misplaced judgments to postpone one of the most anticipated sports years in history.

That’s before you even get into the jobs lost and millions, even billions, of dollars lost. If you think that won’t effect lives, then you’re not being honest. The fight isn’t over yet (for winter football), but knowing how stubborn university presidents are, it is likely to be a bloodbath.

Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker has decided to postpone the fall high school sports season, to the spring. This has a number of repercussions for some top football players in the state, including some Minnesota Gopher football commits. Pritzer sites an unsafe environment, among other things, for his decision…

“These are incredibly important moments in the lives of our children,” Pritzker said. “When the multi-billion-dollar sports leagues with multi-million-dollar athletes are struggling to protect their players it is obvious there won’t be enough protection for kids on our school’s playing fields.

The NBA has resorted to containing its players in a bubble to press on with its season. MLB is facing down a major outbreak. This virus is unrelenting and it spreads so easy that no amount of restrictions seems to keep it off the playing field.” – J. B. Pritzker

Many high school athletes have spring sports they want to compete in, already… so now they have to choose between their favorite spring or fall sports? Fewer high school athletes (usually higher caliber kids), won’t be in high school anymore, for a spring season because they choose to graduate early and take off for college. That allows them to enroll months earlier (for spring semester).

I don’t know how many Gopher commits that rings true for, but some seem very adamant about playing in the fall. According to Alex Kaliakmanis, who lives in Antioch IL and whose sons (Athan and Dino) are both committed to Minnesota, his lions are being caged up with this decision from the Governor of Illinois.

But Kaliakmanis, whose sons Athan and Dino are committed to the Minnesota Gophers in the class of 2021, has no intentions of his kids playing in the spring. Now, people on the outside looking in, like this Twitter user, may question the elder Kaliakmanis’ decision.

The Gophers have a lot to lose in Illinois

Look at Jameson Geers, for example. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound tight end committed to the Gophers on January 30 of this year over Purdue, Iowa and Wisconsin just to make a few. He is also from Illinois, where he plays at Providence Catholic. And his reaction after he heard the governor’s announcement says it all.

In addition to the Kaliakmanis twins and Geers, the Gophers football program also has three other class of 2021 commits from the state of Illinois: running back Mar’Keise Irving, offensive tackle Cameron James, and defensive end Austin Booker. So far, none of those three players has released any information on what their plans are for the football season. 

But Athan and Dino — actually their dad — has. He wants to move them to a state where they will be able to play fall sports. So what options do the Kaliakmanis brothers or others have if they do, indeed, decide to take their talents out-of-state. 

Minnesota

Going to Minnesota would be a really good option for Athan and Dino. Not only would it allow them to live where they will be spending the next four years of their lives, it would also allow them to get to know both the state of Minnesota and the Twin Cities more. They would also possibly have access to PJ Fleck and the campus, which would help them more easily make the transition from high school to college. 

Where they would play though is the real question. They could decide to spend it at powerhouse Eden Prairie, which was recently named the best high school football program in Minnesota.

Another option could be to play for the SMB Wolfpack. The Wolfpack will not have star QB Jalen Suggs or WR Terry Lockett this year, which opens the door for Athan and Dino to step right into their roles. 

But another great option would be to attend Shakopee. 2021 Gophers commit Deven Eastern is enrolled there, which would allow the two brothers to play with one of their future Gophers football teammates. Obviously all of this depends on what the governor and MSHSL decide to do regarding their plans for football this coming fall. 

Iowa

A less likely option for Athan and Dino would be to play in Iowa. Since Iowa currently plans on having a fall football season, the Kaliakmanis twins could still get a regular fall football season in and not have to play in the spring. A downside to playing in Iowa that it is three hours from Antioch, IL (their hometown) to Dubuque, IA (one of the closest cities in Iowa). But this would still be a decent option.

Wisconsin

Wisconsin is probably the most likely option. As of now, the state of Wisconsin is still planning to have a fall football season, although games wouldn’t start until the 24th or 25th of September. Additionally, the regular season will only be six weeks and the postseason three weeks. 

For these reasons, and the fact that Antioch is less than 10 minutes away from the border, Wisconsin seems like a very plausible option.

Other Options

Other options would be playing in Florida, Arizona, or Texas. These states all have Minnesota signed players; Austin Booker (FL), Steven Ortiz (AZ), and Brady Boyd (TX). This would be a great option if the Kaliakmanis’ want to team up with a future Gopher.

Overall, this is up to each family. A spring football season would not be the same as a fall season, but neither would going to an out-of-state school. So it brings up the question: will the lions stay caged or be released into the wild?

Carson Ruen

The Minnesota Gophers stunned a lot of people after they won 11 games, losing just two, and going 7-2 in the B1G last season. That’s a massive improvement after going 7-6 overall and 3-6 in the B1G the year prior. The Gophers football program as a whole is becoming one to watch out for. Now, teams are highlighting the matchup on their calendars.

The AP top-25 poll currently has the Minnesota Gophers ranked at ten overall, right behind B1G rival Penn State. Ohio State ranks ahead of both teams at third overall. However, you can bet that the Buckeyes aren’t a lock to win the B1G again this year.

There are plenty of reasons to suspect that the Gophers are going to have plenty of intriguing prospects for the upcoming NFL Draft. Last year we saw safety Anotoine Winfield Jr, wide receiver Tyler Johnson, linebacker Kamal Martin, defensive end/outside linebacker Carter Coughlin, and cornerback Chris Williamson all selected in the 2020 NFL Draft. But could the 2021 NFL Draft have more and even better Minnesota Gopher draft prospects? Let’s take a look at the top-5 draft prospects for them.

5. DE #34 Boye Mafe

Redshirt Junior Height: 6-4 Weight: 260

Mafe’s hometown is Golden Valley, Minnesota and he went to Hopkins High School in Minnetonka. Mafe was ranked as the best defensive end in Minnesota coming out of high school. He lettered in both football and track and field.

Mafe redshirted his freshman year in 2017. The next year, he registered 12 total tackles, 0.5 sacks, and one pass breakup. Last year we saw the potential Mafe has. He played in all 13 of the Gopher’s games, but didn’t get a lot of quality playing time. But he made the most of it.

He registered 14 total tackles, 3.5 for a loss, and he totaled three sacks. Most of his time was in a rotational role, but this year he should find himself a starting spot on the edge.

Mafe made Bruce Feldman’s “Freaks List” this year, and for a good reason. His testing numbers are off the charts for someone of his size. His vertical came in at 40.5 inches and he also registered a broad jump of 10′-6″. To top that, he ran a 4.57-second 40-yard dash with a 10-yard split of 1.58-seconds. Mafe also registered a 4.30-second short-shuttle.

Mafe has the testing numbers, and they show on film. His burst and quickness are on full display. With more playing time this year, there’s no reason he can’t become one of the better edge rushers in this NFL Draft class.

Those testing numbers are impressive, but Mafe can also squat 653-pounds! That’s 393 more pounds than his current weight! He also power cleans 400-pounds. Mafe clearly has the strength to become one of the best defensive ends the Gophers have had.

4. WR #7 Chris Autman-Bell

Redshirt Junior Height: 6-1 Weight: 215

Autman-Bell grew up in Kankakee, Illinois, where he attended Bishop McNamara High School. He broke his hand during his senior season, which found his recruiting ranks in all different sorts. ESPN had him ranked as the 8th overall recruit in Illinois, Rivals had him at 17th, and 247Sports had him at 35th. Needless to say, the Gophers got a steal with Autman-Bell.

Autman-Bell redshirted his freshman year in 2017. In 2018, he appeared in all 13 games and received nine starts. His numbers were fairly impressive for a freshman as the third or fourth option on a team with a subpar quarterback. That season, he had 28 catches for 449 yards, which ranks third all-time by a Gopher freshman.

Last season, Autman-Bell was, again, the third or fourth option on the Gophers offense. He appeared in all 13 games again, and once again caught 28 passes, this time for 371 yards and five touchdowns. He also registered at least one catch in every game.

While you might say that the stats aren’t entirely up to snuff with Autman-Bell, the traits are there. With Tyler Johnson leaving a gaping hole in vacated targets, Autman-Bell should find himself as the second target this year, which should boost his production numbers.

3. QB #2 Tanner Morgan

Redshirt Junior Height: 6-2 Weight: 215

Alright, I know what you’re thinking, “Tanner Morgan should be higher than third-best Gopher NFL Draft Prospect,” and you’re not wrong, but wait until you see the next guy before you stop reading.

Tanner Morgan’s coming to Minnesota story is an interesting one. Nicole Auerbach of The Athletic wrote an interesting piece on the relationship of PJ Fleck and Tanner Morgan, focusing on the story about their journey coming to Minnesota. In the piece, Auerbach talks about how Morgan was destined to join Fleck at Western Michigan, but Morgan found out Fleck was headed to Minnesota, Morgan was quick to follow. Now, Tanner Morgan is Fleck’s star quarterback, leading an effective offense with great numbers.

Last season, Morgan posted 3253 yards with 30 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions, completing 66% of his passes. Those are outstanding numbers compared to what the Gophers were used to seeing in previous years.

As I’ve written in my scouting report, Tanner Morgan has a lot of positive traits that will translate well to the next level. He has phenomenal footwork and easily gets into a rhythm. Impressively, he’s also knowledgeable, scans the field well, and goes through his progressions nicely. Morgan is solid working off-script and keeps his eyes downfield when he’s scrambling. What’s really exciting for Gopher fans is that he might find himself receiving first-round hype soon.

2. OT #78 Daniel Faalele

Junior Height: 6-9 Weight: 400

Yes, Faalele beat out Morgan. Hear me out, but first, did you see his measurables? He’s 6-feet 9-inches and weighs in at 400-pounds! He’s a mammoth of a human being. You would think a guy that size isn’t very athletic; nay, his size doesn’t hinder his movement skills whatsoever.

Faalele is originally from Australia but attended IMG Academy in Florida. ESPN and 247Sports rated him as a four-star recruit and was a part of the 2018 Under Armour All-America Game. Faaelel started the final eight games for the Gophers as a true freshman and started 11 games last year. He got his experience early and looks to add to his already outstanding bag of traits. Plus, you can’t teach size!

In my scouting report for Daniel Faalele, and as I stated previously, he shouldn’t be able to move the way he does for a man his size. His length is very evident and uses that to make up for misses or to counter the rush of the defender. He creates natural leverage, and his anchor is solid. Size, athleticism, strength; Faalele has it all to be a stud tackle in the NFL.

1. WR #13 Rashod Bateman

Junior Height: 6-2 Weight: 210

Is it any surprise that Rashod Bateman is the best Gopher prospect for the NFL Draft? If it is, you’ve been living under a rock. He’s been arguably the best receiver on the team since his freshman year. Now, he is one of the best in all of college football. The traits are there, and the stats back it up.

As a freshman, Bateman started all 13 games for the Gophers. He set freshman records for receptions, with 51, and receiving yards, with 704. He combined that with six touchdowns, which was just one shy of tying the freshman record.

Last year was a tremendous year for him. He again started all 13 games and caught 60 passes for 1219 yards and 11 touchdowns. That amount of yards and touchdowns were both the second-most in a single-season for the Gophers.

Rashod Bateman currently ranks 31st overall on The Dynasty Draft Room’s 2021 NFL Draft Prospects board. There is a good reason for him to be that high. He has the perfect size to play as an outside receiver, and his game is very well-rounded. Not to mention his strong hands and an excellent catch radius.

Bateman can truly be a threat at any level of the field. He’s a great vertical threat, but can also make plays at the first and second level. He has a ton of speed and is versatile enough to play anywhere on the line of scrimmage. Don’t be surprised to see Bateman find his way into the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Zack Thomas | Minnesota Sports Fan

After weeks devoid of any recruiting news, we finally received some over the weekend. Tony Fields II, a graduate transfer from the University of Arizona, announced his top three schools via Twitter on Sunday night. In addition to Texas and West Virginia, the other school in his top three was PJ Fleck and the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Fields II, who hails from Desert Pines High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, recorded 94 total tackles this past season for the Wildcats. He was second on the team in that category while also starting all 12 games. Additionally, Fields II totaled five tackles-for-loss, 1.5 sacks, three pass breakups, one interception and one forced fumble. 

With those stats, you might wonder why someone as productive and consistent as Fields II decided to transfer. While he didn’t reveal much in that area, he did at least adress it on Twitter.

In any case, P.J Fleck and the Gophers were quick to jump on the Fields II bandwagon. They offered him just a day after he announced his plan to transfer. That quickness proved vital too, as Fields turned down subsequent offers from USC, UCLA, Kansas State, and Boise State.

FILLING A VOID

If PJ Fleck lands the 6-foot-1, 220 pound Linebacker would be massive for the Gophers. Fields II would bring tons of experience to the Gophers. He played and started in all 37 games for Arizona in his career. He would also be able to fill the gigantic shoes of Carter Coughlin and Kamal Martin.

Junior Mariano Sori-Marin is the only current linebacker who has starting experience with seven games played in 2019. The Gophers are desperately in need of more help at that position. And to make matters worse redshirt-sophomore Braelen Oliver suffered an injury earlier in the spring. 

Fields II also boasts NFL-level talent. But don’t take my word for it, just look at this tweet from NFL draft analyst Jim Nagy.

PJ Fleck has been in a bit of a dry spell recruiting wise over the last two months. But the addition of Fields II would surely make up for that.
