First, if you are looking for some PC rant about how Derrick Rose doesn’t care about depression or suicide victims, you’ve come to the wrong place. I have no idea how Derrick Rose feels on these issues and this comment doesn’t reveal it either. Some might have found the word combinations of “fuck yourself” or “get lost” or if you’re Joe Mauer, “well thank you for that”.

His words are going to catch fire and be talked about over the entire next news cycle even though EVERYONE knows he meant nothing toward those who struggle with suicidal thoughts. We need to get out of this sensitive culture before our kids are doomed forever.

I tell my family and friends every day that I’m going to kill them. If you are a friend, and you give me bad news, I’m going to tell you that I will kill you. I won’t though, because I’m not a fucking psychopath.

And even worse, all confessions on the table, I tell my wife that kids are dumb in front of my kids. Well, they are… smaller brains… it’s science.

Rose’s comments were eye-popping though, and definitely made me pick up my phone.

Derrick is a passionate dude. That much is for sure. I wonder how much of this has to do with Tom’s firing. Are Derrick’s feelings hurt? I’d be shocked if Rose ended up back here anyway but it is interesting to think about what we’ll do at point guard if both he and Teague leave after this season.

Due to money and “bird rights” Tyus is almost a MUST-SIGN just because we won’t be able to afford anybody that will carry his price tag without having rights to go over the cap. He’s a Restricted FA this offseason.

Anyways, I’m rambling. I hope you enjoyed Rose’ rant.

And on queue, Derrick has already apologized. He didn’t mean it literally (just like we all knew).

While you were watching the Gophers take The Axe back last night for the first time in 14 years and prepping for your fantasy football stretch run, the Timberwolves took another stride toward mediocrity with a victory over Zach LaVine and the Chicago Bulls.

The win was expected as the Wolves are an average to a little above-average team and Chicago is bad, now 5-15 on the season after last night. But, there were a few major takeaways. One of them is VERY concerning for the #AllEyesNorth movement…

But first, let’s touch on the positive. Karl-Anthony Towns had a fucking monstrous game. The type of game that makes you believe he might become the top-10 NBA player we were dreaming of and now desperately need.

Derrick Rose continues his “fuck you” tour every night on the floor. The guy is averaging 22 points over his last 3 games and it’s not due to an excess in volume… This old mother fucker is shooting 63.4% in those games. It’s unbelievable.

Alright… we have to get to the depressing part of this. Unfortunately, it’s the most important development. And I can’t find anyone who will blame it on some sort of injury that he is playing “tough guy” through or anything else to blame it on.

Andrew Wiggins has been REALLY bad the last couple of games. Catastrophically bad. Especially last night, which culminated in this…

Wiggins rode the excuse train while Jimmy Butler was here. Everyone forgot about his issues, and pointed to the dysfunction Butler was causing, as the reasoning behind his poor numbers and performances. But when Jimmy left town, that excuse train left the station and it was time for Wiggins to nut up.

Like I mentioned in tweeting Darren Wolfson about this earlier today, Wiggins was his best self in the two games immediately following Butler’s departure. But things started going downhill from there and the last two games have been fucking brutal. Unacceptable for the game checks this guy is earning and set to bring in going forward.

Hopefully, a matchup against the team that traded him can get him juiced up… or at least to a flat-line status.

Maybe Glen needs to have another stern talk with him. Look him in the eyes some more while he puts that cash in his pockets.

The Night Derrick Rose Inspired the Entire State of Minnesota https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/the-night-derrick-rose-inspired-entire-state-of-minnesota/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/the-night-derrick-rose-inspired-entire-state-of-minnesota/#respond Thu, 01 Nov 2018 11:21:31 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=11395

This entire year has been a shit show for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Even the good news or anything positive to come from the basketball floor at Target Center came with an asterisk. “Jimmy Butler is leaving so what does it even matter?”

We’ve all waited for someone to take over the team (or even a game) and claim this team as their own. The fan base has turned to Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins to show a fire that would make us believe in a coherent life after Jimmy. But, signs of life have been non-existent…. Until last night.

Look, there are going to be 5,000 articles to read this morning on Rose’s performance from last night so I’m not going to fluff this piece up. I’ll let you get on with your day. Here is what stuck out to me about Derrick’s performance last night.

He cared. He cares.

This entire season has been filled with guys who don’t care. Whether it’s Jimmy not caring about anyone’s feelings but his own (and even seemingly not caring about blowing up an entire franchise and fan base). Or, KAT and Wiggins not caring enough on the floor or off. Rumors have floated that they might care more about late-night Fortnite than they do about being great.

It made for a depressing situation for fans. You want to stand with KAT and Wiggins but their demeanor on the court and clear unwillingness (or hopefully just unreadiness) to take over a game or the team has been frustrating as fuck.

But, all of that disappeared last night.

The shots were falling like they haven’t for Rose in a long time. He showed that he still has a lot of that quick-twitch that won him the MVP back in 2011. And, it’s always a bonus when Ricky Rubio comes to town and lays an egg while one of our point guards puts up a 50-burger.

But, what happened afterward is what caught me in the feels.

To go from a top-5 player in the NBA, to a guy who many thought was on his way out of the league, has to be difficult and clearly something that Derrick struggled to wrap his mind around. To be a shell of your old self in a game that you used to dominate has to be tough. Yet, he pushed through. He kept going. He kept working. Nothing was guaranteed. All of that work could have been for nothing. But, he didn’t stop. He kept rowing. He kept working.

To see all of that hard work and perseverance pay off was rewarding just to watch and a lesson to all those watching. Because, nothing in life is given and nothing is promised. All you can do is put in the work and make sure you capitalize on your opportunities when they arise. No excuses. No bullshit. Just work.

As a fan, it was just nice to see someone other than Jimmy Butler perform like Rose did. Not just the 50 points, but the way he did it and the emotion he played with. Watching a big performance like that is much more rewarding when you don’t have a devil on your shoulder reminding you how “said player” is in the process of ruining professional basketball in Minnesota.

Derrick Rose taught a lot of lessons on Wednesday night. Hopefully Jimmy, KAT, Wiggins, and the fans watching comprehended what they witnessed.

My heart was stolen last night.

Timberwolves Sitting at the Kids’ Table of NBA Free Agency https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/timberwolves-sitting-at-the-kids-table-of-nba-free-agency/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/timberwolves-sitting-at-the-kids-table-of-nba-free-agency/#respond Tue, 03 Jul 2018 12:35:38 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=10252

The NBA offseason, free agency in particular, is sending monsoon style waves throughout the sports world.

However, one summer after making a significant splash of their own, the proverbial waters in the land known for it’s 10,000 (plus) lakes, have remained relatively calm.

After closing up the month of June by waiving Minnesota native Cole Aldrich, the Timberwolves swan dove into the start of free agency by re-signing the 29 year-old, Derrick Rose.

Before moving onto Monday’s roster moves, I’d like to let the (current) record show that I was way off on this whole D-Rose experiment. That’s my bad. I f*cked up, okay. Sue me. Mistakes happen.

Despite frustration surrounding the late season acquisition of the former MVP, thus far, this whole Derrick Rose experiment has played out well-beyond any of my expectations.

With Jamal Crawford basically out the door, bringing back the Tom Thibodeau favorite for just over $2 million is a no-brainer. In the absurdly wealthy world that is the NBA, that amount of money is pocket change. Case and point:

Anywho, now that I have a clear(er) conscience, here’s how your Minnesota Timberwolves started out their work week:

With Minnesota withdrawing a nearly $5 million qualifying offer, it’s evident that the organization is willing to part ways with the Serbian-born, Nemanja Bjelicia. By reasonable accounts, the artist known as Bjelly will be onto his next one.

Bjelicia’s Wolves career:

As for Tom Thibodeau’s team’s newest addition, Anthony Tolliver, first and foremost, it’s evident that he fancies himself a sniper:

Tolliver, who spent the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons with the Wolves, is fresh off a career-best shooting year. As a member of the lowly Detroit Pistons, Tolliver’s most recent campaign saw him average 2.0 made three pointers (4.6 attempts) per game.

Second of all, the 6’8″ 240 pound veteran can defend. Early indications are that Tolliver will basically slide right into, what was formerly, Bjelicia’s bench role. With all due respect to Nemanja, Tolliver’s ability to effectively guard multiple positions is far superior.

Hey, speaking of being able to guard multiple positions:

While Minnesota’s handful of moves seem logical, in the grand scheme of NBA things, their current list of completed transactions is child’s play.

UPDATE (4/3/18 3:00 PM CST): Jimmy Butler May Play Thursday vs. Nuggets.

I know you’re not supposed to count your chickens before they hatch, but damn. When it comes to Tuesday’s Jimmy Butler developments, it’s hard not to begin picturing the return of the Wolves’ grit-filled superstar.

As for if that means he’ll play Thursday, “don’t ask.”

In many circumstances, that type of response may have rubbed fans the wrong way. However, when it comes from Butler, it’s pure poetry. There’s no doubt in my mind the Marquette alum is dying to get back on the court. When considering how bad (real f*cken bad) I want to see Jimmy Butler return, my desire has to be nothing compared to how bad he’s chomping at the bit.

He was also chomping at the bit to stand up for his coach, who’s been taken throught the ringer on social media of late:

Now that we’ve addressed the breaking Butler news for Tuesday:

Where do the Wolves currently stand in the Western Conference?

Outside of the upcoming Nuggets game, what does the rest of the schedule look like?

All of that information is available (and still relevant) in my original article below.

ORIGINAL (4/3/18 11:00 AM CST): What Separates the Timberwolves from the Playoffs and a Top-6 Seed?

If success really is the best revenge, Ricky Rubio might still be recovering from a vengeance-induced hangover. In case you missed it, on Sunday, during Minnesota’s disappointing loss, the ex-Wolf absolutely torched his former employer:

Good thing it isn’t April Fool’s Day any longer because those stats are no joke. The 27 year-old, who is notorious for his shooting woes, legitimately went 5-6 from deep. As if that’s not unpleasant enough, the significant implications the Rubio-lead win had on the Western Conference’s playoff picture made Utah’s beatdown of the Timberwolves that much more painful.

Speaking of painful: It’s important to note that; on top of Butler’s absence, Jeff Teague (sore right knee) and Derrick Rose (sprained right ankle) sat this ass-kicking out. Rose dressed this time, but didn’t play for the sixth consecutive game. Although I appreciated the Justin Patton sighting and Aaron Brooks nostalgia, being short-handed took its toll. With the beloved Tyus Jones drawing the start, Rubio had himself a whale of a time:

*Apparently, Ricky and I have different definitions of fun.

As of early Tuesday morning, Teague and Rose remain uncertain for Thursday’s upcoming contest but Kyle Ratke, who runs the Timberwolves website and covers the team for NBA.com, told our own Eric and Brandon Strack that he expects Rose to hit the floor Thursday, when he appeared on “No Shirts Just Skins” last weekend.

(Chapter 4 – Wolves with Ratke)

To touch on the one optimistic side of the injury arena, Jimmy Butler (right knee) is “this close to playing.” Hopefully (fingers crossed, knock-on-wood), the 4x All-Star will return on Thursday. In the meantime, even though he hasn’t played since February 23rd, Mr. Buckets keeps balling:

Rather than go on an emotional rant about how much I love that move, it’s probably best if we stick to actual basketball.

Western Conference Standings:

With the entire NBA taking Monday off, Tuesday features a jam-packed 13 game slate. In regards to Minnesota, they get a little extended rest:

Timberwolves Remaining Schedule:

Sidebar: That is the “Final Four” everyone has been talking about, correct?

Surprisingly, there is only a three-game difference separating the West’s 4-9 seeds. Clearly, the standings over this final stretch are sure to vary, like Minnesota’s weather this spring.

If the NBA postseason started today, the Nuggets would be the odd man team out. However, with two remaining games against Tom Thibodeau’s squad, Denver controls their own playoff destiny. Upon parlaying that information with the Pelicans and Timberwolves recent struggles, the way I view it, Nikola Jokic and company could easily finish as high as the seven seed.

And the Jazz? They’re rolling more than a pair of dice. Unfortunately for the Wolves, I don’t know why Utah’s upward trend wouldn’t continue, especially after what we saw the other night. But, unlike Utah, Oklahoma City has an aggressive remaining schedule. The Thunder, who still have to play the likes of Golden State, Houston, and Miami, could easily close the regular season with a worse win/loss than Minnesota.

One thing that is extremely important to keep in mind throughout this anxiety-ridden process, is the injury of Stephen Curry. With The Chef set to miss the playoffs’ opening round, Golden State just became beatable. The majority of NBA fans (including myself) want to see a bloodbath series between former teammates Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant.

In a perfect world, Minnesota finishes no lower than the sixth seed, and we get to witness that heated showdown from the sidelines. While watching all the hatred between last year’s MVP and last year’s Final’s MVP would be euphoric, it’s not even close to euphoric enough, if it means the Wolves finish with the 8th seed, and have to face Houston in the first round. All indications point to the Rockets dusting their first round opponent, even if that opponent has a rocking-and-rolling Jimmy Butler.

To close, while we try to #staywoke on the potential outcomes, the A-1 priority remains:

Put this beast to bed:

Derrick Rose is Injured… and We Miss Him? https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/derrick-rose-is-injured-and-we-miss-him/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/derrick-rose-is-injured-and-we-miss-him/#respond Wed, 21 Mar 2018 20:52:41 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=8962

Unlike the makeup of his injury-prone lower body, there is no questioning Derrick Rose’s natural basketball talent. Despite the participation trophy era in which we live, the NBA only names one league MVP per season. Rose, at the age of 22 years and 7 months (youngest ever) received the honor in 2011. At that time the Memphis alum, who was the number one overall draft pick just three years prior, was a bona fide superstar.

Since then, as we all know, he has blown out a few proverbial tires:

Even with an injury history almost as long Clipper’s Center, Boban Marjanovic’s fingers, D-Rose still can show occasional flashes of his innate athletic abilities.

On Tuesday, Derrick Rose’s (kinda-sorta) still intact skills, albeit brief, were on full display. During Minnesota’s crucial 123-109 defeat of the Los Angeles team that no one cares about (#Kobe), Rose logged an extremely effective seven minutes (9 points (4-6 FG), 1 assist) of game play.

By every indication known to man/woman, the 29 year-old would have seen more action if not for this mid-game development:

The injury occurred when Rose was called for a charge on Clippers guard, Milos Teodosic.

First of all, damnit! Rose’s first three outings in a Timberwolves’ uniform weren’t pretty. Over that trifecta of contests, he registered a +/- of -37 during 32 minutes of action. For the per minute brains out there, that equates to Minnesota losing by 1.16 points for every 60 seconds that the 3x All-Star was on the court. However, during both the Houston and Clippers, it appeared that Derrick Rose was starting to chisel away some of the rustiness. To be fair, before his current Wolves tenure, the PG hadn’t seen any real NBA action since February, 7th.

Second of all, Tuesday’s ankle sprain marks his second such injury of the 2017-2018 season. However, while the previous harm occurred to his left half, the fresh damage is a right side issue. The vast majority of Rose’s reputation for having legs weaker than this state’s gas station beer, surround the Chicago native’s knees NOT ankles… Naturally, this headache (technically ankle-ache) is puny potatoes in comparison to ACL situations.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Derrick Rose’s return is considered day-to-day. Despite my initial bitterness around Thib’s acquiring this particular former Bull, I’m all for him returning to this team ASAP. The way I see it, he provided a much-needed spark during Tuesday’s first half. Let’s see this little experiment in action again, please.

On the flip side, if this causes Rose to miss multiple contests, I won’t be losing a second of sleep.

For many Timberwolves’ fans (including myself), Thursday was viewed as somewhat of a shit-show. On top of the on the court defeat, Tom Thibodeau, and company, made the unpopular decision to acquire PG Derrick Rose. They might as well call us CoLe ALdrich with those two L’s.

The (38-29) Timberwolves will be in action again, Sunday afternoon. With the world-champion Warriors coming to town, don’t hold your breathe on MN snapping their three-game losing streak. However, on the bright side of things (sorry, Steph), the best shooter of all-time will be sidelined.

With just over a month of regular season basketball remaining, let’s examine where the Wolves stand on their quest to reach the postseason for the first time since 2004:

Western Conference Standings:

One minute you’re tied for third in the West, and talking home-court advantage. The next, Jimmy Butler is out and you’ve dropped to sixth (Spurs have better win %), in aggressively quick fashion, . Damnit! As Tupac said, “things changed.”

After Sunday’s game vs. Golden State, the immediate future doesn’t get any brighter. This tough part of the schedule will conclude with contests in Washington and San Antonio, before wrapping up at Target Center vs. the Rockets.

What kind of geographically challenged individual made that decision?

Anywho, like when tomorrow morning’s hangover starts to cease, the Wolves will eventually experience some relief. Actually, when you look at the entire slate of remaining contests (15 games), it’s not that painful. Out of the other top nine teams in the West, five of them (Portland, New Orleans, Oklahoma City, San Antonio, Los Angeles) have a more difficult remaining strength of schedule.

I was extremely encouraged (and surprised) to see that both ESPN and Basketball-Reference listed (as of Friday) Minnesota with an 88% chance of reaching the postseason. That feeling went away when I noticed that each of them gave the Raptors over a 23% chance to win the NBA finals. To me, that seems like some fraud-ass numbers.

via GIPHY

Naturally, how the season wraps up will largely depend on the status of Jimmy Butler. Per TNT, coach Thibodeau wouldn’t put a timetable on the All-Star’s return. Despite saying that he is thinking “long-term,” Thibs did note that “rehab is going according to, if not, better than planned.”

With that vague injury update said, if you force me to be a broke-ass version of Nostradomus, Minnesota barely gimps themselves into the post-season.

via GIPHY

Assuming that forecast comes to fruition, snapping the earlier-mentioned playoff hiatus will be a blessing. On the glass-half empty side of things, a first-round shellacking at the hands of Houston or Golden State doesn’t sound too appealing either.

Regardless of my not overly confident prediction, time will only tell what the hell happens. Over the next few weeks, keep your eyes on the NBA standings. While you check out where Minnesota sits, don’t forget to stay woke on those Oklahoma City Thunder:

Minnesota’s professional basketball team just got themselves a Rose. Whether or not that was inspired by this week’s season finale of the Bachelor, is unclear.

Per reports, PG Derrick Rose has agreed to a deal with the Timberwolves.

The 2011 NBA MVP has played in just 16 games this season. Upon being traded by Cleveland to Utah in a deadline deal, the Jazz immediately waived Rose. At that time, reports were swirling about a possible reunion with his former Bulls’ coach, Tom Thibodeau.

When the potential D-Rose to Minnesota news started, I wrote an article, breaking down how pissed I’d be if the 29 year-old started eating into Tyus Jones’ minutes. At best, the former number one pick is a shell of his former self. Since becoming the youngest MVP in league history, Rose has been ravished by injury. Over the past 6 NBA seasons (not including 2017-18), he has appeared in an average of just over 38 games per year.

Derrick Rose Stats:

If you can’t already tell, I’m not a fan of this move. On top of his sketchy numbers, while they both were in Chicago, Jimmy Butler questioned Rose’s work ethic.

To flip on a little optimism, we had to find someone:

Well, with Teague and Tyus we should have found someone who can shoot or defend. A body is a body! Ya!!

As of early Wednesday afternoon, it’s unclear when Rose will make his first Wolves appearance. Whenever it is, I’ll be hawk-eyeing Tyus’ minutes like I’m the Iowa mascot (Goldy = G.O.A.T).

The Apple-Valley native is currently at 16.2 MPG over the last ten contests. In the event that number starts to decrease; well,  after seeing me, Thib’s sideline yelling won’t look so aggressive…

If Thibs Signs Derrick Rose and Gives Him ANY of Tyus Jones’ Minutes, I Swear to… https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/thibs-signs-derrick-rose-gives-tyus-jones-minutes-swear/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/thibs-signs-derrick-rose-gives-tyus-jones-minutes-swear/#respond Fri, 09 Feb 2018 13:14:14 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=7758

Prior to its 2PM CST trade deadline, on Thursday, the NBA was wheeling and dealing. For comparison purposes, the league was almost as active as FitBit’s newest ambassador, Andrew Wiggins.

In regards to your Minnesota Timberwolves, they weren’t involved in the asset swapping fiesta. While we stayed away like my fellow Millennials do when they receive a phone call, the Cleveland Cavaliers did the opposite. Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, and Derrick Rose’, now-former employer, participated in not one, not two, but three deadline deals.

Stop, Lebron. It was three trades. Not one, not two, BUT three. As for your Miami Championships?

My bad. I’m salty over how he stuffed the hell out of Jimmy, and then channelled his inner Christian Laettner for the game-winner on Wednesday night. Shit happens, I suppose. Kings will be kings.

Anywho, back to the trades. As mentioned, Derrick Rose is no longer a part of the Lebron James’ run show, that is Cleveland, Ohio. Rose, who is a shell of his former MVP self, was traded to Utah. Despite the move, per reports, he won’t even touch a Jazz uniform. With the 29 year-old being released by Utah, where will he go from there? Well..

Say it with me Wolves Nation – DAMNIT! Considering our current point guard situation, this doesn’t sound too “natural” to me. My main concern, as well as MANY others, is D-Rose cutting into Tyus Jones’ minutes. Wouldn’t that be something? It’s been a while since I’ve gone full psycho..

As you can tell, I don’t have near the soft spot that Tom Thibodeau does for the 2010-11 NBA MVP. However, I’m by no means a Derrick Rose hater. I want him to find himself a PG job somewhere, doing something. I’d just prefer that workspace be outside of the Wolves’ organization.

What about Jeff Teague?

Let’s say it were earlier in the week, and we knew Rose would be on waivers, I would have been all for entertaining offers to ship out Jeff Teague. If you could have gotten value for our current starting PG, the thought of Jones running the show with Rose backing him up sits fine with me.

With the deadline now passed, it appears that the man brought in to be Ricky Rubio’s replacement will remain as the teams starter for the rest of the season. That’s that.

In the event MN let go of Aaron Brooks, signing Rose would mean not one, not two, but three PG’s. All of which, unlike Brooks, would expect minutes. That’s too many mouths to feed. The way I see it, Tyus Jones should already be getting larger servings. If the Minnesota native loses proverbial calories to the former Chicago Bull, to put it nicely, it won’t bode well with the fans.

Speaking of former Chicago Bulls, Jimmy Butler spent time as Rose’s teammate in the Windy City. I wonder what he thinks about all of this? Well, what do you know…  look what I found from 2015:
