They’re coming off a big win over the New York Jets in London on October 6th, and honestly, this year’s Jets kind of remind me of the 2010 Vikings.

Shoutout to Phil Mackey for pointing this out on today’s SKOR North episode. After the huge news that superstar WR Davante Adams is being traded to the New York Jets, Mackey made a solid point about this year’s Jets team.

The New York Jets continued their reliving of the 2010 Minnesota Vikings season, where you’ve got an over-the-hill, 40-plus-year-old quarterback trying to relive the glory days. This team is desperate to make up for the disappointment of the previous season. In the Vikings’ case, it was getting to the doorstep of the Super Bowl, while in the Jets’ case, it was blowing out your Achilles on the first snap, leading to dissension in the locker room and the firing of a coach. To complete all these similarities, both teams made desperate trades—Minnesota sent a third-round pick to acquire over-the-hill star wide receiver Randy Moss in 2010, and now the Jets have brought in Davante Adams. I think both teams also started 2-4, so their records are very similar too.

The New York Jets are literally recreating the 2010 Minnesota Vikings season

Davante Adams is reuniting with Aaron Rodgers, but not in Green Bay. This time, it’s happening in New York with Rodgers’ current team, the New York Jets, who’ve been having a rough season so far. After a Monday night loss to the Buffalo Bills, they’re now sitting at 2-4.

With that said, we can now officially compare them to the 2010 Minnesota Vikings, who also made a big trade for a star receiver that season. But that’s just the start, here’s a list of similarities between the 2010 Vikings and the 2024 Jets.

  1. HOF Quarterback Dependence
  2. Desperate Big-Time Receiver Trade
  3. High Expectations
  4. Head Coach Firing
  5. Coming Off Devastating Previous Seasons
  6. Started 2-4

1. HOF Quarterback Dependence

In 2010, the Minnesota Vikings were in their second season with Hall of Fame QB Brett Favre, who, nearing the end of his career, was as desperate as ever for another Super Bowl win before eventually retiring after the 2010 season.

Fast forward to today, and we’re seeing a similar situation with the Jets. Aaron Rodgers, now 40, is in his second season with the team, hoping for one last deep playoff run to add another Super Bowl to his Hall of Fame legacy. Just like Favre, Rodgers played and won a Super Bowl with the Packers early in their careers.

2. Desperate Big-Time Receiver Trade

Back in 2010, the legendary Randy Moss, who was with the New England Patriots at the time, was traded to the struggling Minnesota Vikings after a rough 1-2 start. The Vikings were desperate to revive their offense and hoped bringing back Moss, where he made his name, would do the trick.

Today, the New York Jets, fresh off a primetime loss, make a similar desperate move by trading for one of the top receivers in the league, Davante Adams. Not only that, but they’re reuniting him with his old teammate, Aaron Rodgers, a duo that won plenty of games together. This feels like another deja vu moment, drawing comparisons to the 2010 Vikings.

3. High Expectations

Coming off an overtime loss in the NFC Championship the year before, the Vikings entered the 2010 season with sky-high expectations. Many believed they could make a return to the NFC Championship, and even have a shot at winning the Super Bowl, yet they ultimately missed the playoffs entirely.

On the other hand, the Jets came into the season with Super Bowl aspirations, thanks to a fully healthy Aaron Rodgers and a strong defense. However, they’ve struggled so far, starting the season 2-4. There’s still time to turn things around, but given the parallels to the 2010 Vikings season, things might not end well for them.

4. Head Coach Firing

Even after reaching the NFC Championship the previous season, the Minnesota Vikings opted for a change at head coach after Week 11, when their record stood at 3-7. While this late-season decision added to an already disastrous year, it reflected their struggle to turn things around.

In a similar situation, the Jets also fired their coach, but they did so much earlier in the season, following a 2-3 start. Ironically, this move came right after a loss to the Vikings. It was evident that the Jets weren’t rallying behind their coach, echoing the turmoil the Vikings faced back in 2010.

5. Coming Off Devastating Previous Seasons

The Minnesota Vikings faced a tough NFC Championship loss to New Orleans, with Brett Favre just inches away from leading the team to the Super Bowl in his first season. That near-miss raised the bar for the following year.

On the other hand, the Jets had a rough start when Aaron Rodgers stepped onto the field for his debut. Just a few plays in, he got injured and was ruled out for the entire season. Fans were eagerly awaiting his return this season, which feels reminiscent of the Vikings’ situation back in 2010.

6. Started 2-4

Another interesting coincidence with both teams is that they both started off 2-4. While the Jets still have a lot of season left to play, the fact that their records are lining up in such a similar way could hint at what’s ahead for them this season. Only time will tell how it all unfolds.

I think it’s really intriguing how the seasons are so similar almost identical, in fact. The Jets still have plenty of time left this season, and it’ll be interesting to see if they can make a comeback, unlike the 2010 Vikings.

Davante Adams Wants Kirk Cousins to be His Next QB https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/davante-adams-wants-kirk-cousins/ Wed, 24 Jan 2024 00:46:40 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=47002 Current Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver and former Green Bay Packer, Davante Adams, joined Amber Theoharis (Sirus XM) and former Packers WR James Jones in there first episode of the Two Gs in a Pod podcast.

Davante Adams wants Kirk Cousins as his quarterback?

During the show, Adams was asked a bunch of questions about his career and his current situation with the Raiders. But then, Theoharis asked Davante, if he could catch passes from any quarterback in the league other than Aaron Rodgers, who would it be?

Adams hesitated in his response and changed the question a little bit, but said that there are a couple of QBs he has his eyes on right now (remember, Vegas is without a clear starting QB). After a light chuckle, Davante started talking about how much he likes Kirk Cousins and his possible availability (10:30 mark – transcribed below).

“I’ll say this… there’s a couple of quarterbacks I really like. If we’re talking about a dude that can just find somebody, I mean, I like Kirk Cousins. I think Kirk Cousins is a really good quarterback. As far as availability, I think Kirk’s a good player.”

Kirk Cousins To Las Vegas?

As of Tuesday, we haven’t heard much for rumblings of Cousins to Vegas. But the Raiders have a need at QB and Kirk Cousins is set to become a free agent in mid-March. So if their superstar wide receiver is eyeing a new QB1, you can bet Raiders decision makers will listen.

Cousins has mentioned many times that he will prioritize winning, while deciding where to play next season. Have the Raiders built a good enough roster to reel Kirk in? Maybe not, but money and great wide receivers have a way of convincing QBs into things they might not be interested in otherwise.

The Raiders took the interim tag off Antonio Pierce recently, and former Chargers GM Tom Telesco was just named their next general manager. If Telesco’s mission is to make the Vegas roster as competitive as possible in 2024, there’s probably not a better QB option than Kirk Cousins, should he make it to free agency.

Davante Adams to Minnesota Vikings?

Who knows what GM Kwesi Adofo Mensah is up to today, hopefully off somewhere trying to figure out the best way to make sure Justin Jefferson, Kirk Cousins and Danielle Hunter are all under contract next season. Because if Davante Adams openly wants to catch footballs from Kirk, you can guarantee there are a lot of others who are dreaming about the same thing.

During this season, Adams showed his frustration within the organization, and many thought he would be traded, but wasn’t. Anything can happen in the NFL and it’s shown the last few years, so who knows. We are in for an entertaining offseason.

But if the Minnesota Vikings are making plans to let Kirk walk away this offseason, they’re doing a great job of hiding it. Today, they posted a featured video of Cousins participating in their ‘Ready. Set. Send’ campaign, in partnership with TCO Orthopedics.
