In the tweet getting the most attention, Wolfson replies to X user @Antszn3, “I am a giver, far too nice to randoms like yourself on this app”. From there, Doogie told the anonymous tweeter that there is one “negative” he can’t stand about social media: “Those who would be and should be voiceless somehow think they have some sort of voice now”.

So, here’s the thing about the internet. Going viral isn’t always a good thing. There are a lot of tweets in Darren’s long-standing media career at KFAN, ESPN Radio and KSTP (CH. 5 – ABC) that Wolfson would have paid big money to have go viral. I can promise this was not one of them.

The day MN Vikings, Twins, Wolves reporter Darren Wolfson became a meme…

But when someone lights that viral match, there’s no stopping the internet from exposing you to the real world. Doogie’s reply has now reached over 600,000 people and it didn’t take long before the tweet turned into one of the best memes so far this year.

Darren Wolfson showed up on the local sports scene back in the late 90s, after graduating with a Journalism degree from the University of Minnesota. He started at KFAN Radio, where he held several jobs, both on and off the mic. He’s also worked at CBSSports.com, FOX9 and the Star Tribune (according to his bio at Ch. 5).

After Doogie’s tweet went viral, he went quiet on social media, other than a few work-related posts. On Thursday afternoon, however, he was present for his regularly-scheduled Thursday appearance on SKOR North’s Mackey & Judd Show.

Darren Wolfson offers non-apology over viral mean tweets

To start the episode, Darren’s friend and colleague Phil Mackey teed him up for his first attempt at addressing the now-viral mean tweets. Here’s how it went…

Mackey: “From the Channel 5 Eyewitness News sports department, and the most popular man on Twitter, Darren Doogie Wolfson. Doogie I feel like we need to eliminate the replies from your Twitter and remove the temptation to be mean to people and get in fights.”

Wolfson: “I hear you. Like legitimately, laughs aside, it’s on me like I need to be better more than anyone. I don’t need to respond. I shouldn’t respond. I’m the fool, I went too far and that’s on me. And I actually, I sincerely thank a few people.

I don’t need to name names but some people that reached out providing all sorts of really good advice, plus a couple people that said, ‘hey, you’re okay’, but I own it. It’s on me, and so I need to be better. I will work on being better moving forward…But I think you’re right I think the key is still tweet but like there’s no reason to engage.

So those who need to reach me: email, Facebook, there are different ways to correspond with me. Fine, so be it. But, like in terms of my notifications column on Twitter: Done. There’s no reason…it’s on me. Like, I’m an idiot for engaging so that’s my fault.”

Mackey & Judd Show

Darren is right about one thing. He definitely has issues being nice or leaving his replies alone, anytime someone questions his insider scoops or challenges him on X in any way way other than please and thank you.

In fact, the viral reply above, along with a few other mean tweets that have been seen by 100s of thousands over the last couple days (see bottom of this article) are only the tip of the iceberg for Doogie.

Belittling “random ones” on X is somewhat of a favorite pastime for Wolfson, and something that he partakes in on a daily basis. That’s why so many users were more than happy to help push along his internet demise with more viral fuel, the moment they saw an opportunity this week.

Hey Darren, you were the original aggressor, remember?

Then, when given the chance to admit wrongdoing, Doogie pushed most of the blame on others, attempting to paint himself as a victim. For those who can’t pay as close attention to local media drama, it’s important to point out that Darren is not the innocent self-defender he wants you to believe he is.

See, this all started in the X replies of Minnesota Sports Fan writer, Ted Schwerzler, after he sent a tweet about MN Twins pitcher Chris Paddack, and mistakenly noted the wrong opponent. The Twins weren’t playing the Braves on April 29 (Tuesday), they were playing the Guardians.

That’s when Darren Wolfson — unprompted by other mean twitter trolls — became a mean Twitter troll. This isn’t the first time, of course. Making fun of how often Ted tweets is a weekly thing for Doogie.

So, remember that “I’m a giver” tweet from earlier? The one that went viral. That reply (along with others listed below) came from within Wolfson’s original response to Ted. And many of his tweets were at people sticking up for Ted, who’s tens of thousands of followers clearly don’t mind his daily barrage of tweets.

As much as Doogie wants you to believe that his mean tweets were just a defense mechanism to fight off social media trolls, this wasn’t that. The original mean troll that got him in trouble on Wednesday… was Darren Wolfson himself. Then when confronted about it, he got meaner.

Darren Wolfson is not sorry.

And this is only what the public sees. Privately, behind the scenes, Wolfson was using his 30 years of media networking in the Twin Cities to threaten Ted’s future in the MN media world, claiming that he had the power to strip Minnesota Sports Fan of the media access we have had inside Gophers sports since 2019, along with any opportunities Ted may have at future access with other teams.

So, don’t let Wolfson fool you. He is the mean tweeter. Are some of his mean tweets prompted by other (more anonymous) Twitter trolls? Sure, but holy moly show some self control… and definitely don’t cry and point at others when you get called out.

NFL Insider Expects Another Minnesota Vikings Trade Soon https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/minnesota-vikings-rumors/nfl-insider-expects-another-trade-soon/ Sat, 02 Nov 2024 01:23:32 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=56855 Even though they’re working with a limited amount of draft capital after aggressively targeting Dallas Turner in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Minnesota Vikings have been active in trade discussions this year. Recently, they added RB Cam Akers and LT Cam Robinson. However, now there’s further speculation that another Vikings trade could be coming.

More Minnesota Vikings trades coming?

Minnesota Vikings
Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images

Once Kwesi Adofo-Mensah addressed finding an injury replacement for Christian Darrisaw, many assumed the Minnesota Vikings could be done swinging trades ahead of the Nov. 5 deadline. But even though a 5-0 start quickly spiraled to 5-2, it’s possible the Vikings are still looking to remain aggressive in trade discussions this season.

According to KSTP’s Darren Wolfson, the Vikings are still confident that this team can be a top contender in the NFC, and they may be looking to capitalize on their early momentum.

“I’ll be surprised if they don’t do anything else, They view the NFC being pretty darn wide open… the way they view it internally, they can still make a run in January.”

Darren Wolfson on Minnesota Vikings

Even though they’ve addressed their biggest needs due to injury, the Vikings still have plenty of room for growth. One particular area that the front office still wants to improve is along the defensive line, where the Vikings have few long-term contributors.

While the Vikings could add a star defensive lineman in the 2025 NFL Draft, if all goes well, Minnesota’s first-round draft selection won’t come until the late 20s or early 30s. So, identifying a long-term solution now via the trade block could make a lot more sense.

Another area the Vikings could target is another cornerback in the secondary. Stephon Gilmore, Shaq Griffin, and Byron Murphy are all set to become free agents at the end of the season, leaving Brian Flores’ defense incredibly thin at the cornerback position. So, once again, finding a cornerback who can contribute for multiple seasons could be one of the many positions the Vikings are still hunting for.

Minnesota Vikings Trade Rumors Fueled by Local Insider’s New Scoops https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/minnesota-vikings-rumors/vikings-trade-rumors-jeffery-simmons-jaycee-horn/ Fri, 18 Oct 2024 00:27:59 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=56291 Heading into the season, no one really expected the Minnesota Vikings to be among the NFL’s biggest trade deadline buyers. Starting the season with just three selections in the 2025 NFL Draft didn’t help. But mostly, no one expected a group that had the preseason over/under on their win total set at just 6.5 wins to be one of the best teams in the league.

But here they are, with a shiny 5-0 record heading into a pivotal matchup against the 4-1 Lions on Sunday. The winner will be the NFC North’s division leader heading into Week 8. If the Vikings win, they could become aggressive, seeking roster upgrades ahead of the Nov. 5 NFL trade deadline. Recently, a local Vikings insider addressed that very possibility.

Could the Minnesota Vikings go all in at the trade deadline?

Minnesota Vikings, Jaycee Horn
Jim Dedmon-Imagn Images

As noted, SKOR North’s Darren Wolfson recently addressed some popular Minnesota Vikings trade rumors floating around the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

Here was “Doogie’s” response when asked whether the Vikings could take a Rams-like ‘F them picks’ approach and go all-in ahead of the Nov. 5 trade deadline:

“The answer is not zero percent. The possibility does exist. I think it ramps up even more if they win on Sunday (against Detroit), create that much more separation in what looks like the best division in football. Do I think that’s at least been rattled about in Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s mind? Yes. Now, who is that player? Is it Jaycee Horn of the Panthers? There’s a cornerback in Cleveland (Greg Newsome) that I believe is enticing. What about Jeffery Simmons? I haven’t looked at the contractual situations of all these guys.

Going back pre-draft, even though it’s a new regime, there are a number of holdovers from when Simmons was draft-eligible, there were a lot of healthy opinions of him pre-draft. And I’m not quite sure he’s done anything to make you change off that stance. Really good player, and I don’t know that the Titans would move him.”

Darren Wolfson on Vikings’ trade deadline

Wolfson’s understandably a busy guy, so we took some time to do a bit of extra research on these players’ respective contracts.

Evaluating Jaycee Horn’s trade fit for the Vikings

The first player he mentioned is young Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn (son of former Saints NFL WR Joe Horn). Interestingly enough, the 24-year-old is only under contract through 2025. Since he’s under contract for another year, he could be one of the more attractive options to upgrade the secondary, both now and for years to come.

Horn enters Week 7 graded 36th among 102 qualifying cornerbacks per Pro Football Focus. The Vikings’ starting cornerbacks rank 33rd (Gilmore), 65th (Murphy), and 71st (Griffin). Yet, it should be noted that none of the trio are under contract after this season. Adding Horn would provide more long-term security.

Related: 4 Bold Predictions for Minnesota Vikings’ Week 7 Matchup vs Lions

Evaluating Greg Newsome’s trade fit for the Vikings

The second player Wolfson named was Cleveland cornerback Greg Newsome II. The 24-year-old former first-round pick is in a similar contract situation as Horn, in that he’s under contract for this season and the next. Since the Browns are 1-5, a trade could be possible as they look to avoid a similar start next year.

However, Newsome is nowhere near as proven as Horn. He currently ranks 96th among 102 qualifying cornerbacks. His best season saw him rank 31st, but that came as a rookie. Newsome graded as the 34th-best NFL CB in his second season before slipping to 55th in 2022.

The Browns haven’t reached a contract extension with their young corner, and Adofo-Mensah’s ties to Cleveland’s front office could help the two teams reach a trade agreement. Trading for Newsome definitely wouldn’t cost the Vikings their first-round pick, which could make him a more attractive potential solution.

Related: 4 Stats to Know for Detroit Lions vs Minnesota Vikings Matchup, Analyzing Impact

Evaluating Jeffery Simmons’ trade fit for the Vikings

This is the big kahuna. Simmons is a player that could lead the Vikings to part with a future first-round pick. The two-time second-team All-Pro is one of the best defensive tackles in the NFL. But he just signed a four-year, $94 million extension last year. Of course, his contract security also makes him an attractive trade option with him under contract through 2027.

The Titans may have had no plans to trade their two-time Pro Bowl DT when the season started, but they’re 1-4, and Will Levis isn’t doing a good impression of a franchise quarterback. Tennessee’s struggles likely put them on track to seek a new franchise QB in the 2025 NFL Draft, and having some extra capital to move up the board could be enticing.

Simmons is a 27-year-old game-wrecker who averaged 7.1 sacks per season from 2021-23, and he also routinely grades as one of the best interior run-stuffers in the NFL. He enters Week 7 as the seventh-highest-graded run defender among interior linemen. As much as we love Horrible Harry, Harrison Phillips ranks 24th.

So, there’s no doubt that Simmons would be a significant upgrade. Plus, the 2025 free agency class for interior defenders isn’t pretty after Alim McNeill and Kenny Clark signed extensions. If the Vikings continue to be on pace to pick late in the first round, parting with a selection in the 20s or even 30s for a proven star wouldn’t be a bad plan at all. But that’s only if Tennessee’s willing to listen.

Local Insider Proposes Wild Karl-Anthony Towns Trade https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/local-insider-proposes-wild-karl-anthony-towns-trade/ Sat, 13 Jul 2024 15:58:59 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=52895 The Minnesota Timberwolves won’t trade Karl-Anthony Towns. At least not this offseason. However, that hasn’t stopped Timberwolves trade rumors from emerging from all areas of the map.

There are several reasons why the Towns trade rumors won’t go away. For one, the four-time All-Star is one of the most skilled 7-footers in the NBA today. Of course teams want to add one of the NBA’s best shooting bigs to their roster, but that doesn’t mean the Timberwolves want to break up their potential championship core.

Another reason the KAT trade rumors won’t dissipate any time soon is the Wolves’ rising costs. His four-year, $220 million contract is undoubtedly a major contributing factor. He has a $49.2 million cap hit this season and $53.1 million in 2025.

Yet, as mentioned, Timberwolves PoBO Tim Connelly isn’t looking to blow up this roster or risk damaging the strong team chemistry built over the past few seasons. However, that won’t prevent some from fueling more Towns rumors all offseason long.

Darren Wolfson presents Timberwolves with a cap-saving solution

Karl-Anthony Towns
Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports

The latest KAT trade idea comes courtesy of local KSTP insider Darren Wolfson, with a classic rendition of reckless speculation on SKOR North. “Doogie’s” idea is to swap Towns to the New York Knicks in exchange for Julius Randle and Josh Hart.

Does a Julius Randle + Josh Hart swap for Karl-Anthony Towns make sense?

While Randle would easily replace Towns in the starting lineup, slotting next to Rudy Gobert as the starting power forward, he wouldn’t do anything to improve the team’s offense. In fact, he’d make the spacing a lot worse.

Karl-Anthony Towns stats: 21.8 PPG, 8.3 RPG, 3 APG, 41.6% 3PT
Julius Randle stats: 24 PPG, 9.2 RPG, 5 APG, 31.1% 3PT

He’d also put the Timberwolves in an even worse position in relation to the salary cap. Towns, while expensive, is under contract through 2026-27, with an additional year available if he picks up his $61M player option. Keep in mind, if Towns hit the open market, it would take two seconds for another team to give him a new max contract, he’s not overpaid.

Meanwhile, Randle would likely only be in Minnesota for one season at a cap hit of $28.9 million. Yes, it’s a lot more than Towns earns, but he’d likely just decline his $30.9 million player option next offseason, where the three-time All-Star would seek another max-level contract extension. Randle’s even a year older than Towns.

Sure, in Wolfson’s proposal, the Timberwolves would also be getting 6-foot-4 wing Josh Hart back to go with Randle. Hart is an excellent rebounder and a plus defender with a non-stop motor, but he has flaws too.

Josh Hart stats: 9.4 PPG, 8.3 RPG, 4.1 APG, 31% 3PT

But he too would make the Wolves’ spacing worse, as he’s just a 34.4% 3-point shooter in his career. He’s also on a four-year, $80 million contract, earning $18.9 million next season. With Randle and Hart, that’s $47.8 million, compared to just keeping Towns at $49.2M.

Not to mention, where would Hart even fit in the Timberwolves’ lineup? He’d obviously earn a top role on the bench, but is it really necessary? Adding Hart would only make it that much harder for rookie standout Terrence Shannon Jr. to earn floor time, and Joe Ingles would get bumped to the back of the rotation too.

Ultimately, aside from skirting further penalties for being over the NBA’s second spending apron, this trade doesn’t make much sense for the current Timberwolves, but it is one of the better offers we’ve seen. It’s just not one that makes the team better next season, or in the long-term future.

Local Insiders Suggest PFT’s Mike Florio is Being Played by Kirk Cousins and His Agent https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/darren-wolfson-shoots-down-florio-pft-report-kirk-cousins-atlanta/ Tue, 05 Mar 2024 19:46:20 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=48504 On Monday, a report dropped at ProFootballTalk.com from Mr. PFT himself, Mike Florio, that shook up the NFL offseason world a little bit, much like he is apt to do.

Florio had a “very credible indications” that Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins was already low-key planning his family’s move to Atlanta, presumably because he was preparing to sign a contract with the Falcons, once free agency hits next week. Of course, Florio picked his words very carefully.

We’re picking up very credible indications that Kirk Cousins is planning a potential move of his family from Minnesota to Atlanta.

We can’t get into the specifics, for now. But we’re getting very credible indications that Cousins is seriously considering moving his family…”

Read more on yesterday’s report at PFT and the possible implications

But Tuesday morning, local scoop master, Darren “Doogie” Wolfson (KSTP, SKOR North) shot Florio’s report down, after talking to one of his own trusted sources. Wolfson opened his appearance on ‘Mackey and Judd’ today on SKOR North, unprompted, with a report that more indirectly (but still rather aggressively) pushed back on what we’ve been hearing recently about Kirk, the Vikings and his ties to the Falcons.

In other words, Doogie shined a much more positive outlook on the situation, from the viewpoint of someone hoping Cousins returns. That it’s still very possible Kirk is wearing purple next season (01:25 mark — transcript below).

“We may know at this time next week — so when I join you guys next Tuesday, March 12 — I think we’ll have a good amount of clarity. But for the next week, there’s enough uncertainty because we know this is a fact: The Vikings have interest in resigning Kirk cousins.

It’s not as simple as, ‘we know that Kirk is going to land elsewhere, probably Atlanta [so we’ve given up], that there is legit interest [on the Vikings’ end]. So it’s fascinating to see, if this can play out, where there is a scenario where Kirk does indeed re-sign with the Vikings.”

Wolfson: Kirk Cousins’ camp planting seeds with Mike Florio

Wolfson then moves to a more direct shunning of yesterday’s PFT report, saying that he checked with his own extremely reliable Kirk Cousins sources, following Florio’s post on Monday, and those sources short it down aggressively, though they did note it’s possible they’ve been in touch with a realtor in Inver Grove Heights, MN that leaving is a real possibility.

“I will say, I did follow up on that Florio report with one person who knows Kirk incredibly well. He shot that down. Now again, that doesn’t mean Kirk his re-signing with the Vikings or not landing in Atlanta. I’m telling you, the end game absolutely can be Kirk landing in Atlanta.

But the exact verbiage that Florio used, like this person shot it down. I think, the extent of Kirk planting seeds on a potential move from Minnesota is, like, a conversation with a realtor… or the family, you know, about potentially putting the Inver Grove Heights house on the market. But I don’t sense there’s been all this inner working, you know, going on down in Atlanta, like it’s a done deal that Cousins is getting ready to uproot his family, that there’s already all this groundwork laid in the Atlanta area.”

Darren Wolfson – Mackey & Judd

Doogie and the rest of the Mackey & Judd Show on SKOR North then turn to mocking this idea that a family as rich as the Cousins would have to pre-plan a possible move to Atlanta weeks before such a life-changing move is anywhere near being finalized.

Related: Kirk Cousins Shows Off His New “Grillz” and Justin Jefferson Approves

They’re right, too. If we assume Kirk’s kids would finish out the school year in MN then there’s no reason a family with $100s of millions of dollars would be calling moving companies or trying to set up house showings in Atlanta already.

Mackey, Judd and Wolfson believe (rather matter-of-factly) that the information PFT is being fed is nothing more than a plant by the Kirk Cousins camp, for posturing purposes with the Vikings. The show raises some very interesting questions regarding how Florio got his hands on whatever information he thought he had yesterday, even if the “indications” were “credible”?

Judd: So let’s go through that, though, because it’s very clear that this was a plant from the Cousins’ side. Because you’re right, a millionaire is not going to say, ‘well we got a lot of work to do to move. I mean, we gotta pack up U-Haul.

Mackey: Gotta get a quote [for movers], right?

Judd: “Yeah, if they rent, you gotta get the security deposit back? ‘Julie, start cleaning now!'”

Mackey: “‘What if they charge us $500 for a deep clean???’

Judd: “So, the plant comes from the Cousins’ side and I think what that was, Doogs, is very clearly one of [Kirk’s] final attempts to tell the Vikings, ‘we’re serious… if you don’t believe us, we’re serious.’ And I do have some spies out there that tell me that conversation [about planting plans to move] might have been had between two people, or at least one person who is very in touch with Kirk, who was probably told, ‘hey, you might wanna make a phone call [to Florio] and tell him we are considering moving’.”

Mackey and Judd Show (SKOR North)

Meanwhile, back at the PFT studios… Mike Florio is doubling — check that — tripling down on his steam and he’s not even hiding where his information is coming from anymore. A once massive Kirk Cousins critic has been flipped and now the two wives are talking…

Vikings Open to Moving Back from Pick #12 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/vikings-open-to-moving-back-from-pick-12/ Tue, 05 Apr 2022 17:05:49 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=38638 What will the Minnesota Vikings front office operate during the draft? That’s a question worth asking for the first time in nearly a decade. With Rick Spielman in the big chair, we had a pretty good idea of how drafts would unfold. He had his targets. If they weren’t available in the windows he wanted, he’d trade for as many 7th-round picks as possible.

Hopefully, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah values mid-round picks more than his predecessor. The NFL Draft begins on April 28 so we won’t have to wait much longer to find out. But according to Darren Wolfson (SKOR North, KSTP), the Vikings are “very open-minded” to trading back from #12 overall, should the talent they desire not be available.

“My understanding is the Vikings are very open for business at pick 12. Now, I know there has been a lot of Derek Stingley Jr steam. He has his pro day on Wednesday, the LSU cornerback. Sure, maybe if a certain player or a couple players, heck is there any chance Kyle Hamilton of Notre Dame falls? I have a hard time seeing that, but, you know depending on how the board shakes out. Like, no guarantee the Vikings are looking to move down but I hear the Vikings are very open-minded to moving down. So if a team like the Saints are interested in moving up… just something to keep an eye on.”

Darren Wolfson – The Scoop Podcast

Vikings Precarious Draft Position

The Minnesota Vikings are in a very intriguing spot for this year’s first round. The offensive linemen on the board are tackles, which the Vikings don’t need. And top secondary talent like Hamilton, Stingley Jr and Sauce Gardner could be taken by the time #12 rolls around. If so, we can obviously expect Kwesi to raise his hand as a trade partner for teams hungry for an offensive tackle or… a quarterback.

Quarterback Malik Willis will probably be selected before the Vikings draft hit the clock but the middle of the first round might be where other teams look to get their QB of the future. That could be another trade back opportunity for the Vikings.

Trading up in the first round costs major draft capital, no matter how small the jump. For example, moving from #16 to #12 costs a 3rd round pick (according to Walter Football). Moving from #22 to #12 costs a 2nd round pick.

I’m all for Kwesi trading back if it fits their draft plan and they can collect day-2 picks in the process. The Vikings have a lot of issues they’re relying on this draft to fix. Just as long as the new general manager isn’t targeting 6th and 7th round picks in return.

It Was Vikings Ownership Who Pushed Spielman to Draft an Early-Round QB https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/it-was-the-wilf-family-who-pushed-spielman-to-draft-a-qb-early-minnesota-vikings-mond-cousins/ Thu, 06 May 2021 19:32:55 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=34927

We all knew the Minnesota Vikings went into April’s NFL Draft looking for a quarterback to possibly replace Kirk Cousins. But with Rick Spielman and Mike Zimmer both on the hot seat heading into 2021, who was pushing them to take a future QB instead of a position player who can fill a hole immediately? Well, it turns out the “recommendation” for an early QB, who would eventually become Kellen Mond out of Texas A&M in the 3rd round, would come from the very top.

That’s right, the Wilf family all but called for the Vikings GM and front office to draft an early round quarterback. At least that’s what Darren Wolfson (SKOR North, KSTP) told “Mackie and Judd” this morning on SKOR North radio.

Transcript from video above:

Judd: Rick and the front office? Did Mike play a role, which I doubt. Because, I think it’s very interesting to get into the dynamic of who in that building, who has the foresight to say, ‘we are going to need a replacement for Kirk here and it’s going to, you know, actually be fairly soon’.

Wolfson: Judd, let’s start at the very very top: OWNERSHIP. I am told by multiple people that ownership drove the bus, not necessarily on that specific quarterback, Kellen Mond, but on the idea of taking a quarterback relatively high. And if it came down to it, even taking a quarterback in the first round. But that the Wilf’s didn’t want Spielman to wait until round six to take a quarterback. They didn’t want it to be like last year waiting until round 7, snagging, Nate Stanley.

I don’t want to call it an edict but there was a strong recommendation from the Wilf family to really look strongly at a quarterback really, really high. Clint Kubiak, you know from a scouting standpoint, drove a lot of the bus in terms of the background checks, in terms of being at pro days. You know, interviewing these these quarterbacks. Certainly, Clint Kubiak had a lot to do with how they stacked their board.

But I’m just telling you, Judd, I have it from from multiple angles, strong angles, that it was the Wilf’s more than anyone internally saying: ‘hey, it’s time for us to have some sort of succession plan’. ‘You guys’, this is the Wilf’s talking to Mike, to Rick, to Rob, to Jamal to others, ‘hey, you really need to take a long hard look at some of these upper-echelon quarterbacks’.

When the Wilf’s talk, Rick listens…. and hopefully Kirk does too.

The Minnesota Vikings’ owners pushing their team to draft a new quarterback shouldn’t be a surprise, in retrospect. We’d all expect the Wilf’s to be around a lot longer than Mike Zimmer and Rick Spielman so it makes sense that they would be the group looking toward the future.

This news is also a wake-up call for Kirk Cousins. Wolfson went on to say in this interview (see below), that the Wilf’s seem “a bit tired of cutting big fat checks to Kirk Cousins” with minimal results. Remember, Cousins is only 32 years old, which is a prime age for NFL quarterbacks.

If the Vikings are happy with Cousins, they could logically hang onto him for the next 6-8 years and get him at the most productive time of his career. Can Kirk change the thinking of the Minnesota Vikings ownership group? Or, is he just keeping Kellen Mond’s seat warm?

‘MSF Podcast’ Returns and Darren Wolfson Joins ‘Wake Up!’ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/msf-podcast-returns-and-darren-wolfson-joins-wake-up/ Wed, 06 Jan 2021 17:04:29 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=32621

Good morning Minnesota Sports Fam.

With the Vikings’ slow and painful 2020 death now realized, we’ve officially hit the sports abyss of Minnesota winter. But there’s good news.

After a 1.5 year hiatus and many many requests to come back, the Minnesota Sports Fan Podcast has officially returned. We’re ready to blow some minds, have some fun and probably piss some people off. Our first episode back was recorded last night and it released this morning.

It’s a tangent-driven episode loosely based around Gopher basketball and some Vikings. We’re not afraid of politics either. So if you are… then you should stop being so sensitive. Feel free to leave all of your negative political comments here, on Facebook or on Twitter.

More MSF Podcast

Not only is the Minnesota Sports Fan Podcast back… but we’re back twice per week. That’s right, you now get a double-dose of the MSF Podcast to fill your time.

Our plan is to record on Monday and Wednesday nights, and then release them on Tuesday and Thursday mornings on all podcast platforms. We will soon be streaming a video version of the show LIVE to Twitter on recording nights.

Subscribe where you listen to podcasts:

Darren Wolfson Joins Stephen Strom on Wake Up!

Our up and coming radio superstar, Stephen Strom, hosts a very short morning show called, ‘Wake Up Minnesota!’. New episodes air THREE days per week and are just 15-20 minutes in length.

Stephen is meant for radio (but does write too) and has a ton of experience behind a microphone, especially given his age. The show will get you caught up on all the major happenings around the local college and pro sports scene and should be an absolute MUST for any Minnesota sports fan.

Plus.. his weekly guest list is fire. One week, you might get a scouting report from an opposing team’s local reporter. The next week, you might get Darren Wolfson (KSTP – SKOR North). He’s also had Chris Autman-Bell, Patrick Reusse and many others (see below).

Other guests that have appeared on Wake Up! include:

EPISODE 37 SUMMARY

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.19.4″]

Brandon is out on another vacation but is spelled by the infamous Seth Toupal, who writes for the site and talks on the radio for a living at KLGR in Redwood Falls/Alexandria area as the host of “The Scoop.”

Darren Wolfson was nice enough to hop on the phone with us to give us the low-down on all of the latest Minnesota Sports News.
– How excited are we about new-look Wolves?
– Who is the TWolves next FULL-TIME coach?
– What happened with Gophers OC Kirk Ciarocca and WVU? (It’s not the first time…)
– Gopher Football loaded with young talented coaches

After about 20 minutes with Darren, we lost the recording so we cut short about 1 minute.

We then comb over our Wolfson interview before moving on to the Gopher Basketball team who we are very nervous about after Tuesday’s loss to Maryland.

Last, but not least, we hit the Vikings’ hire of Kevin Stefanski and what we should expect to see from the Vikings’ offense in 2019.
