That was put on display for the nation last season when the Minnesota Timberwolves unveiled their 2023-24 city edition uniforms. In 2024-25, they are completing a two-year story arc, as a continuation of last year’s run to the Western Conference finals.

NBA teams change their “City Edition” uniforms on a regular basis. That’s what they are meant for. Each year, NBA franchises show off new uniforms for use at home, on the road, and as alternates. But instead of completely starting new for this season, the Timberwolves are doing a Part II version for last year’s ode to Minnesota’s summer lake life.

In very “up north” fashion, this updated City Edition uniform (which was revealed on Monday) is a severe cooldown. Instead of liquid water, these uniforms are supposed to feel (literally) icey. We went from floating, tubing and beer frisbee, to ice houses, tip-ups and augers. Unfortunately, there is no tip-up or ice auger on the new jerseys.

The new uniforms are described as featuring the feel of ice-covered lakes under a moonlit sky. It’s a well-done tie-in from last year’s version, which got a very lukewarm welcome, The blue color has flipped positions on the jersey, and there is much colder feel to these threads, than there was for the 2023 offering. The ice pattern was designed in Bloomington, Minnesota.

“When it comes to the cold of winter, Minnesotans don’t just survive, we thrive. We’re excited to complete Nike and NBA’s two-year City Edition story arc with a celebration of lake life in Minnesota – ice cold style.”

Minnesota is scheduled to wear the new uniform 23 times this season. They will debut the City Edition jersey on Sunday November 17 against the Phoenix Suns. Fans in attendance for that game will receive a City Edition rally towel as well. To match the uniforms, Minnesota has unveiled a new court as well.

If you’re going to lean into the notion of being cold, then residing in Minnesota is a good place to do it. These City Edition uniforms perfectly encapsulate winters in the north, and lake life still lives on in the frigid temperatures.

Timberwolves Release New “North Star City Edition” Uniforms https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/minnesota-timberwolves-release-new-north-star-city-edition-uniforms/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/minnesota-timberwolves-release-new-north-star-city-edition-uniforms/#respond Thu, 03 Dec 2020 16:17:21 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=31672

The Minnesota Timberwolves have released a new uniform that they are calling the “North Star City Edition”. It emphasizes the “North Star” concept that Minnesota is known for (mostly because of hockey).

There is a giant “star” that only has 4 points. The Wolves have pushed it a little bit since adopting their new logo a few years ago, but this is the farthest they have taken it. Maybe it will grow on me but this looks like another miss. Here is the video released by the Timberwolves. You be the judge.

The 2020-21 North Star City Edition uniform pays homage to the North Star that shines bright to guide and unite the over 5.6 million people of the State of Minnesota. The uniform’s main hue, midnight black, reflects the mystique and dark characteristics of a Minnesota night – a time when the North Star shines brightest. The collection of stars, running along the right-side panel of the uniform, represents the connection amongst people in Minnesota and around the world. The aurora green trim is symbolic of the vibrant hue that shines by way of the iconic Aurora Borealis – the transformative northern light that breaks through the darkness and is visible in the northern skies of Minnesota.

Timberwolves Release New “The Cities” Edition Unis https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/timberwolves-release-new-the-cities-edition-unis/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/timberwolves-release-new-the-cities-edition-unis/#respond Wed, 20 Nov 2019 15:44:22 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=19348 The Minnesota Timberwolves just released a new form of their “City Edition” uniforms. This time though, they’ve put their own spin on it and they are calling it “The Cities” Edition uniforms…. which I must admit, is a pretty fucking awesome concept. They slapped a simple “MSP” design on the front and gave it a “carolina” blue color, and you can color me impressed. This uniform is awesome and so is the “family” concept that comes with it.

There was one point, when this new uniform contract was first bought by Nike, where I knew how the whole jersey selection process worked with the “city” edition and the “throwback” edition and the “earned” edition… but I don’t remember and it’s more difficult than it should be, to find.

All I do know, is that I will be forever disappointed in every new uniform release until Glen Taylor finally brings back Old Shep’. Everyone in Minnesota wants Old Shep back but Glen Taylor seems to distance himself from those early uniforms more and more, as the years go bye. I can’t remember the last time we wore those uniforms to commemorate those first few years in the NBA.

Here’s the thing… I’m only 30. I can’t remember back to when the Wolves actually wore those uniforms. It’s not that type of attachment for me. That royal blue and forest green along with the Old Shep logo is just one of the best throwbacks of all time. It’s like the Brewers burying their glove and ball logo (which they are now bringing back because they realized that was really stupid).

So…… I like this new uniform a lot. I liked the Prince one too. The black with green trees definitely hit me in the sensitive spots because that is the uniform I grew up with. HOWEVER, I need to see these first uniforms in some format. The block “WOLVES” on the front… old shep on the shorts leg… please Glen.. just give the people what they want.

Timberwolves New Nike “City” Uniforms Released https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/timberwolves-new-nike-city-uniforms-released/ https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/timberwolves-new-nike-city-uniforms-released/#respond Wed, 27 Dec 2017 12:56:30 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=5770

After originally being leaked on NBA 2K, the Timberwolves Nike’s “City” uniforms have officially been released. The all grey style represents the fourth and final new jersey for Minnesota.

In my personal opinion, it’s a terrible look. However, my disdain may be a blessing for the Wolves franchise. I failed fifth grade art and it wasn’t due to a lack of effort. The right side of my brain is absolute garbage. So, who knows? Maybe these uniforms will be a hit and I’ll be reminded of my artistic deficiencies.

Their appearance is meant to represent our community’s “unifying nature and hometown pride.” #MinnesotaNice. Speaking of Minnesotans, we will have to wait a little over a month for the “City” jerseys to be unveiled on the court. Per the Timberwolves official website, they will be worn for the first time on February 1 vs. Milwaukee.

Another change this year is the allowance of outside company’s logos on the uniforms. As you can see above, Glen Taylor partnered with FitBit. That business relationship also includes the world champion, Minnesota Lynx, and the Wolves’ G-League affiliate. Unfortunately, I was unable to find a dollar amount attached to the three-year deal.

Speaking of partnering with sports franchises, U.S. bank agreed to pay $220 million for the naming rights to the Vikings stadium. The quarter century long agreement averages out to $8.8 million annually. That’s almost 4.5x as much as Case Keenum will make this NFL season.

Wells Fargo frustrates me to all hell, but this poker move was an all-time classic:

So petty you almost have to respect it. That Vikings and Wells Fargo eventually standoff eventually ended with a court-ordered settlement. Due to contractual obligations between the Wilf owned franchise and the Fortune 100 Bank, the financial retainer took the brunt of the judge’s decision.

In closing, if you missed out on Monday’s NBA bender, I apologize.

My only complaint regarding it was that there were no special holiday uniforms. Some complete and utter bullshit. Step it up, Nike. A little less Oakland Raiders themed Timberwolves ensembles and a little more of you doing your part on December 25th. Thank you. XOXO.
