With Steph Curry out due to a hamstring strain, the Wolves enter tonight as -10 point favorites, but trail in the series 0-1.

There was only one thing that Timberwolves fans missed more in game one than seeing their team with a lead — something they never owned after the first quarter — and that’s regular season TV broadcasters Michael Grady and Jim Peterson.

Instead, we got TNT’s Brian Anderson and Stan Van Gundy, who coached in the NBA for 25 seasons, and who now might be the worst color commentator in all of sports right now.

Van Gundy knew so little about the ins and outs of the Timberwolves season and roster the other night, that I can’t imagine he did much of any research whatsoever, prior to game one. And now, Stan and his TNT crew are back on the call for game two…

FanDuel Sports Network North is done covering Minnesota Timberwolves playoff games in 2025. FDSN’s play by play voice for the past two seasons, Michael Grady, wasn’t on the call for FanDuel Sports Network’s Wolves coverage in round one, because he was calling first round playoff games for ESPN.

Michael Grady lands play by play job with Amazon

Grady started with the MN Timberwolves prior to the 2022-23 season. Three years later, it’s becoming increasingly unclear as to whether or not the former Brooklyn Nets sideline reporter — and now one of the rising stars in NBA play by play — will be back calling Wolves games for FanDuel Sports Network North at all next season.

On Thursday, in a report by Ryan Glasspiegel (Front Office Sports), news broke that Michael Grady has landed a job with Amazon, as part of their WNBA and NBA coverage for next season. Not only is he now one of the top guys for Amazon’s basketball coverage, but he has also been in talks with NBC about joining their new NBA broadcast crew as well.

Michael Grady is expected to become Amazon’s top WNBA announcer in addition to calling NBA games for the tech giant’s Prime Video streaming service, sources tell Front Office Sports. The deal has not been finalized.

In an interesting wrinkle, Grady has also had talks to call NBA and WNBA games for NBC, FOS has learned. In this potential arrangement, it’s possible Grady would work for both Amazon and NBC.

What is Grady’s future with the Minnesota Timberwolves

Grady, 42, will join a star-studded broadcast lineup for Amazon’s upcoming NBA coverage — which holds rights to the NBA Finals in 2028, 2032 and 2036 — includes Ian Eagle and Kevin Harlan on play by play, as well as Taylor Rooks, Dirk Nowitzki, Blake Griffin, Dwyane Wade, Candace Parker and Steve Nash, according to Glasspiegel’s report at FOS.

There has been no information released as to Michael Grady’s future plans as Minnesota Timberwolves play by play voice. He now holds the same national role at ESPN and Amazon. Especially if Grady were to get a the job at NBC, how much time will he have on his hands to travel with the Wolves all winter calling their 82-game schedule?

Minnesota Sports Fan has reached out to Michael Grady for comment and/or more information. If he responds, any relevant details he relays will be added to this article. Grady’s broadcast partner at FanDuel Sports Network North, Jim Peterson — who’s been working with Wolves radio at KFAN during the playoffs — tweeted about the promotion this afternoon.

I’m so proud of my guy @Grady for landing this groundbreaking national broadcast deal. Michael will be the Breen, Eagle, Harlan of his generation with few peers.

I have so much gratitude to have worked with him for the past 3 years and hope to continue working as many Wolves games as his schedule permits in the future.

Congratulations Grady…you are the best!

Minnesota Twins Back on Bally Sports; Blackout & Streaming Issues Remain Unfixed… for Now https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/minnesota-twins-back-on-bally-sports-north-2024-blackout-streaming-unfixed/ Fri, 02 Feb 2024 19:25:37 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=47407 For a handful of years now, Minnesota Twins fans all over the midwest have been dealing with TV blackouts, streaming issues and a plethora of other difficulties in trying to watch their favorite baseball team play games on television or via livestream.

Minnesota Twins + New Deal with Bally Sports North: What We Know

Unfortunately, it appears those frustrations may continue to exist in 2024, after details of a new one-year contract between the Twins and Bally Sports North were released late Friday morning. The new agreement still needs to be approved by a bankruptcy judge next week, but the expectation is that approval won’t be a problem.

In the finer details of the contract, as tweeted out here by MLB insider Evan Drellich (The Athletic), a clause appears to restrict both the Twins and Bally Sports North from selling or offering any direct to consumer streaming options during the 2024 season.

In other words, the Twins/MLB did NOT sell their streaming rights to Diamond Sports Group (parent company of Bally Sports), as part of this new one-year contract. So as of now, Bally Sports North does not have the authority to offer standalone live streams of Minnesota Twins games directly to a consumer.

This part of the contract is not surprising. Earlier in the week, when this deal was getting close to the finish line, it was reported that the Twins, along with the MLB, did not want to release streaming rights to Diamond Sports Group (Bally) as part of the rumored (at the time) new one-year deal.

What was a bit surprising is the restrictions included for the Minnesota Twins and MLB. They cannot sell their direct-to-consumer streaming rights to a 3rd party for the 2024 season, nor can they stream games directly to fans themselves, without local blackout restrictions coming into play.

Meaning, as of now, nothing about Minnesota Twins broadcasts in 2024 will be different from what fans dealt with during the 2023 season, or in seasons prior. Unless Bally Sports North is offered as part of your…

  • Catch-All Stream-Only packageOnly option currently is Fubo (My Recommendation)
  • Cable TV package Spectrum, Xfinity, etc.
  • DirecTV package (also offers stream-only option)

… you still can’t watch the Minnesota Twins this season, as things currently stand.

Any good news…?

There are some out there who are holding out hope that this is only the first step in a multi-step process that eventually lands Twins games on Amazon Prime this summer. Diamond Sports Group doesn’t own streaming rights for the Minnesota Twins, or nine other teams that they have TV broadcast rights for.

But for the five teams that they do own streaming rights for, those teams will move over to Amazon Prime as soon as this season. Optimists out there believe another round of negotiations between the MLB, Bally and Amazon will begin, regarding the remaining teams’ streaming future in 2024, after this process is wrapped up.

Remember, this initial contract had already missed multiple deadlines and was under a lot of pressure from the bankruptcy court to get done. Now that it is complete, some of the details they couldn’t agree on under the gun, could, in theory, be revisited.

Minnesota Twins and Bally Sports North Nearing New Deal; Amazon Streaming Rights Not Included https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-twins/minnesota-twins-bally-sports-north-amazon-nearing-new-deal/ Wed, 31 Jan 2024 19:43:20 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=47300 Where will Minnesota Twins fans be able to watch their favorite Major League Baseball team play games this summer? We still do not know, but it appears we are very close to knowing where TV subscribers will be able to find them.

Minnesota Twins coming back to Bally Sports North in 2024?

If watching Twins games on Bally Sports North wasn’t a problem for you before, it shouldn’t be a problem going forward, either. According to a new update from Evan Drellich (The Athletic) on Wednesday, the bankruptcy agreement that includes Amazon is expected to go through with ease, as long as talks over the next weeks and months do not catch an unexpected snag.

But included in Drellich’s report, the Minnesota Twins are expected to rejoin a family of what a now projected 15 MLB teams who plan to contract their TV broadcasts with (Diamond Sports Group) Bally Sports regional sports network next season.

“…three MLB teams that potentially were not going to be carried by Diamond in 2024 — the Cleveland GuardiansMinnesota Twins and Texas Rangers — are expected to remain with Diamond this season on one-year deals, a person briefed on the league’s thinking told The Athletic.”

What about streaming rights?

Unfortunately for Twins fans without cable, satellite or catch-all streaming services like Fubo, this deal that seems nearly across the finish line, is unlikely to include streaming rights for the Twins and most other Bally teams.

That means, even after the Twins sign on for another year with Bally Sports North, their streaming future for this season will still be up in the air; news that will surely trigger the severe case of streaming PTSD that has built up within the fanbase.

All three teams are expected to remain with Diamond for 2024 on one-year deals, according to the person briefed on the league’s thinking. The deals are highly unlikely to include any streaming rights for those teams, which Diamond didn’t carry before either. Perhaps as early as this week, those deals will move closer to official — Diamond said in court it wants to know whether the teams will accept the terms that have been offered by Feb. 1.

This is where the Amazon investment comes into play. As noted previously, Diamond Sports Group (Bally) only owns the streaming rights to five of the 15 teams it owns TV rights for. The MLB owns the other ten and doesn’t want to allow Diamond Sports to play middle man in negotiations with Amazon.

Once this bankruptcy deal is complete, I would expect Major League Baseball to start negotiating with Amazon directly on streaming rights in 2024 and beyond. Twins’ pitchers and catchers assemble in Fort Myers for Spring Training two weeks from now, on February 14. The entire squad will be there by the 18th. Opening Day is March 28.
