Vikings Granted Permission by Packers to Interview Joe Philbin for OL Coach

If you thought the Vikings news was over for awhile, after Kevin Stefanski was announced as the full-time offensive coordinator earlier today, you were wrong.

Before the night could even end, more news has filtered through. Apparently, the Vikings have received permission from the Green Bay Packers to interview their Offensive Coordinator and Interim Head Coach, Joe Philbin.

Joe Philbin has been granted permission by the #Packers to interview for the offensive line job with the #Vikings. Philbin spent 10 yrs. in GB, including 2018 as OC for 12 games and interim HC for four games. Minn looking for permanent replacement for the late Tony Sparano.

There are a lot of interesting pieces to this development. First, Philbin would be another overqualified offensive line coach just like Tony Sparano was. Philbin was the head coach at Miami for 3 years and has plenty of offensive coordinator experience.

Just days ago, there were rumors that Philbin was being looked at as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator to the new hire at Green Bay, Matt LaFleur. Joe also interviewed for that full-time head coaching spot after holding the interim tag when McCarthy was fired… 

So, what would make him want to come here and take a demotion….

Having more dirt on the Packers wouldn’t hurt. Philbin has coached there in some capacity or another for nearly a decade. Some people won’t like this hire because he has Packer ties and Packer fans are already chirping at us for wanting their leftovers. 

Block out the noise. Philbin would be a great hire for a first-time play-caller in Stefanski. Any and all experience that we can get on offense is welcomed. Clearly, having stability there so Zimmer can focus on the defense as much as possible is the best combination for success.

We’ll see where this interview process leads. Here are some quick takes from people I trust.

Also worth noting Vikings defensive coordinator George Edwards came to the team from Miami, where he was Philbin's linebackers coach for his first two years with the Dolphins.

I'm really intrigued by this. Philbin has a diverse background as an OL coach, coordinator and head coach. Zone blocking is something he has always been known for. His style corresponds well with the #Vikings' personnel (movement skills of guys like Elflein, O'Neill, etc). https://t.co/9Psp8AhmJR
