The Minnesota Vikings have completed their highly-anticipated first minicamp practice at TCO Performance Center out in Eagan Tuesday afternoon.

It might have been a beautiful day in the southern Twin Cities, and it started out exactly how Kyler Murray would have hoped, with the 2019 first round QB taking the first starting reps of Vikings minicamp behind center, not their own 2024 first rounder.

Unfortunately, it sounds like that might have been the lone bright spot on the day for Minnesota’s new quarterback. According to ESPN reporter, Lindsey Thiry (ESPN), Murray proceeded to take his first two starting reps of 2026 Vikings minicamp by tossing back-to-back interceptions.

“90 minutes into practice, Kyler Murray and JJ McCarthy, they are splitting reps with the 1’s and Kyler Murray got the nod to go first today. Might want that back, [with] back-to-back interceptions thrown during 7v7…”

Of course, context is always key. These are the first starter reps Kyler Murray has taken in a Minnesota Vikings offense that he began learning only a couple of months ago. And he’s still splitting reps 50/50 in the process.

JJ McCarthy, Max Brosmer and Carson Wentz have all spent a year or more in this same system. Kyler is taking everything in fresh. That’s what made Murray’s appearance with reporters after practice so notable.

While the actual competition against McCarthy is not what makes him lose sleep at night, Kyler admitted there is one piece of it that’s been weighing heavily on his mind. It would be easier to digest KOC’s complex Minnesota Vikings offense if he was getting all the reps.

“Having to split reps, me already being behind, not getting the amount of reps you would typically want a guy to get learning an offense, that’s probably the toughest part… Now coming into a new system, learning on the fly, trying to play fast, efficient and letting it loose while learning — I’d say that’s the toughest part.”

This isn’t groundbreaking information. Really, Kyler Murray is saying the quiet part out loud. Whoever wins the starting quarterback battle in Eagan — which is expected to be him — is getting less reps at practice right now, than he would if he was already crowned starter.

What is a bit surprising, however, is how early we are hearing him complain about the number of practice reps he’s getting in a QB battle that, supposedly, has only just begun, despite EVERYONE expecting Murray to win.

He may have had a difficult first day of minicamp today. However, if Kyler is still the clear favorite when minicamp comes and end, then it might be more important that KOC names his starter sooner than later.
