Where Oh Where is Byron Buxton?

Byron Buxton hasn’t been in the Minnesota Twins’ lineup since August 22, when an aggressive swing and subsequent outfield dive sidelined him with a geriatric hip. Initial tests showed no structural damage but Buck was sent to the 10-day IL anyway, something he thought was unnecessary at the time.

Turns out, Byron should stick to his day job of hitting baseballs because he’s no doctor. Buxton was eligible to come off the IL when the Twins traveled to Chicago for the weekend and lost two of three vs the White Sox. Instead, he stayed back in Minneapolis.

And his return still isn’t that imminent. According to a SiriusXM interview with president of baseball operations, Derek Falvey, on Sunday, Byron Buxton won’t be back for another week or so.

Playoffs on the line.

This week will not be easy baseball for the Minnesota Twins and it could very well make or break their chances at the 2022 MLB Postseason. After last night’s loss to the Yankees, they sit one game behind the Cleveland Guardians for 1st place in the AL Central. The Twins will play three more in New York before heading home for three big ones vs the Guardians. None of which they expect Buck to take part in.

If the current squad can hold it together while he heals, the final stretch looks fortuitous. Not is Byron expected to return, but so should Jorge Polanco. Reinforcement arms are inbound as well. Bailey Ober, Ryan Dobnak and Josh Winder are all on rehab assignments and expected to contribute down the stretch.

One-of-Us Louie Varland Called Up

With Tyler Mahle back to the 15-day injured list, the Minnesota Twins will need all pitching hands on deck. Which brings us to Louie Varland, who is being called up to make his MLB debut for Wednesday night in New York. It will be a tall task for the Twins’ 2021 Minor League Pitcher of the Year, and son of St. Paul.
