Twins Sign Randy Dobnak to 5-Year Contract Extension
It was reported earlier this week that the Minnesota Twins were going to start 2021 with Randy Dobnak in their Opening Day bullpen. Today, the Falvine front office doubled down by signing Dobnak to a 5-year, very team-option friendly, contract that’s worth a maximum of $29.75 million, according to Jeff Passan (ESPN).
Right-hander Randy Dobnak and the Minnesota Twins are in agreement on a five-year, $9.25 million contract extension with three club options, sources familiar with the deal tell ESPN. The deal can max out at $29.75 million with the options and can grow with escalators.

Randy Dobnak was already under team control through 2025. This extension gives the Twins options to keep him for three more years after that, and guarantees Dobnak financial security. Win, win.

No Brainer?
Nash (TwinsDaily.com) is all in on the Dobnak signing and sees it as a no-brainer for both sides. While I don’t disagree, it’s definitely not something the Twins had to do. As Walker mentions, Randy Dobnak was already under contract through 2025. That’s FOUR full seasons of baseball where anything could happen.
If Dobnak were to blow up, then yes, this could look like a bargain contract down the road. But I haven’t heard that kind of Randy Dobnak projection yet, so this looks more like a good faith move on the side of the Twins.
In all honesty, his numbers look like that of an overachiever… but I hope I’m wrong. Either way, this move shouldn’t hurt the Minnesota Twins. Dobnak has, at the least, proven himself a worthy MLB hurler.
Personally, I’m must glad his mustache is here to stay.
