A-Rod Wants to Move Timberwolves to Seattle; Garnett Pushing Him to Stay
Alex Rodriguez and his business partner, Marc Lore, are starting a long and winding road to purchasing the Minnesota Timberwolves from Glen Taylor. When A-Rod’s plan to purchase was revealed to Wolves fans, the mood quickly went from excitement to sheer panic. What are the chances that Alex Rodriguez, who has zero ties to the area, actually wants to keep this franchise in the Twin Cities?
Well as I’ve written about a couple of times already, what A-Rod wants and what makes business sense could be two very different questions. But after Charley Walters column this morning in the Pioneer Press, one of those questions appears to be answered.
If Shooter (AKA: Charley Walters) is right, Rodriguez’ goal is to eventually move the Minnesota Timberwolves to Seattle.
Shooter bringing heat this morning, including continuing the idea that @AROD wants to move the #Timberwolves to Seattle. For the record, I still think the path to Seattle getting a team is expansion. Iโm more fascinated to see how the A Rod/Lore partnership plays out financially. pic.twitter.com/F0F5ECrsh6

Plausibility
Alex might have big dreams of moving the Wolves to Seattle but he doesn’t have the money to do it. I’d be shocked if Seattle doesn’t have an NBA basketball team ready to tip-off by the 2024-25 season. If that’s going to be the Wolves, A-Rod would have to buy the team from Taylor and setup the move far before then.
But, he’s not supposed to become majority owner of the franchise until 2023 or later. He and Lore are expected to become a 20% ownership group after their first payment to Taylor this Summer. They are still in need of financing for the rest of the purchase and making waves like this isn’t going to push Taylor to move the sale along any faster. Especially knowing his determination to keep the team in Minneapolis.
Kevin Garnett
But if Rodriguez finds the money, makes the purchase and still wants out of Minnesota, who’s going to stop him? The last time we heard from Shooter, he mentioned A-Rod’s intent to bring Kevin Garnett on board as a minority owner, at some point during this whole buying process.
Apparently, KG is going to talk Rodriguez into keeping the Wolves here? It’s also odd that we find out KG’s supposed net worth in this column too… but there’s a reason for everything and that’s part of the intrigue. Could Garnett really be on the new ownership’s radar to run or have a big hand in future basketball operations? What does that say about Gersson Rosas’ future?
I don’t know. I do have a pretty good idea of who is pushing this information to Walter though. And his initials are “KG”. That doesn’t mean anything printed is wrong or misguided… but context is always key.
