The Minnesota Timberwolves certainly have not been the same team this year, that they were last season. That hasn’t been a great reality as Julius Randle has taken real time to gel. The future of the franchise still hangs in the balance over a looming sale, too.

For some time there was a consistent stream of updates that made it appear as though the Timberwolves ownership situation would reach a resolution. That hasn’t come to fruition though, and the latest update casts more doubt.

Minnesota Timberwolves sale receives new criticism from Jim Souhan

In case you didn’t know, the Star Tribune is owned by Glen Taylor. That’s an important lens to view anything regarding the Minnesota Timberwolves through. Jim Souhan recently wrote about the impending sale, and raised more concerns about the potential new owners.

“Give Lore and Rodriguez credit for their aggressiveness, even if it was with someone else’s money. But as vocal fans root for Rodriguez and Lore to win the arbitration case, they should consider this reality: If Rodriguez and Lore had had the money to make the final payment on time, they would have.”

This has been the suggestion on Taylor’s for months. Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore don’t have the money to pay for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Whether or not that is believable is a matter of opinion. The reality is that Michael Bloomberg joined their ownership group and now, no amount of funds should be a deterrent.

It’s odd to think that Lore and Rodriguez would continue pushing to buy the MN Timberwolves if it’s true they really don’t have the cash flow. That was always going to come out at some point, and would be a hilariously bad look for them.

Souhan went further to suggest that, “Maybe Lore and Rodriguez would be good owners, but right now, making that assumption would represent a dubious leap of faith.”

Of course, as mentioned earlier, Taylor is the owner of the company that issues Souhan’s paychecks. For Souhan to publicly question the ownership status of his boss might seem like a foolhardy endeavor. What Rodriguez and Lore have demonstrated as potential owners of the Timberwolves has not inspired confidence in their vast wealth.

That said, they shouldn’t be seen as poor through the lens of an asset growing in valuation and the incumbent being well aware of that reality. We’ll soon see how this all plays out.
