There has been smoke surrounding the Minnesota Timberwolves adding a starting-caliber point guard for weeks. Names discussed have included Ja Morant and Kyrie Irving, among others.

Given the Timberwolves’ flirtation with the NBA’s second apron and their depleted collection of future draft picks, Tim Connelly will have to get creative if he truly is determined to strengthen Minnesota’s backcourt before another Western Conference playoff run.

That’s why it wasn’t all that surprising recently, when reports came out that the Wolves have been lowering expectations on the trade market, supposedly shelving a blockbuster in exchange for a smaller acquisition prior to the February 5 trade deadline.

On Friday, however, it appears Connelly may have changed his mind yet again — if he ever was serious about taking his foot off the pedal. Because according to two different reports this afternoon, the Minnesota Timberwolves are back on the “blockbuster” trade market.

Coby White discussion continues for MN Timberwolves

The first report came from independent NBA insider, Evan Sidery, who says the Wolves and Bulls are still holding trade discussions for scoring guard, Coby White, who has been previously connected to Minnesota as recently as last month.

Coby White was the 7th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. The North Carolina product has spent all seven of his NBA seasons with the Chicago Bulls, where he took a giant step forward in his development in 2023-24 when he averaged a career high 19.1 points per game.

Then last year, he upped that production to 20.4 points per game, before it dropped back down to 18.4 points per game this season, amid heavy trade speculation and only 17 games played due to injury.

There’s no denying that White would cost the Timberwolves more than his teammate Tre Jones, who was floated to Minnesota by ESPN earlier this week.

Timberwolves a team to watch for Ja Morant

The Minnesota Timberwolves have been rolling, of late, winning four-straight games to improve their record on the season to 25-13. But if this team wants to make itself a championship caliber team, it desperately needs high-end ball-handling help.

Coby White would certainly provide what the Wolves are looking for. But he isn’t the only talented point guard that Tim Connelly is supposedly eyeing up.

In a completely separate report involving another point guard, Ja Morant, the Timberwolves were mentioned by Clutch Points NBA reporter Brett Siegel as one of three teams to watch — along with the Kings and Heat — after Memphis officially placed the troubled 26-year-old on the trade block earlier Friday.

Morant is having a down season, by his standards, averaging just 19.0 points and 7.6 assists per game, while shooting a career-low 40.1 percent from the field. Even worse, he is shooting an absolutely brutal 20.8% from deep.

We are now less than a month from the NBA trade deadline, and it’s likely we’ll see the biggest dominoes fall first. So if the Minnesota Timberwolves really are back in on these big name point guards, I’d be surprised if it takes a full month before a deal gets consummated.
