Gophers Women’s Volleyball Advances to Sweet Sixteen

The Gophers Women’s Volleyball team did not disappoint a ruckus Pavillion crowd Saturday night. After Minnesota took the first set, the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) rallied back in the next set, to tie the match. Hugh McCutcheon’s squad responded by winning both the third and fourth sets. The 3-1 victory means that MN has punched their ticket to the Sweet 16.

Part of my brain is telling me to go scorched earth on our neighbors to the south. It wants me to just rip into Iowa like it’s the turf in the Big Ten Championship Game. After long consideration, I’m going to pass. The UNI Volleyball team’s season JUST ended. No reason to rub salt in IA’s wound. Yet.

Outside of the set UNI won, they were unable to crack the twenty point mark in the others. Sophomore Alexis Hart was an ABSOLUTE monster for the Gophers. The Kansas City product led Minnesota with 20 kills. She was followed in that category by Regan Pittman (14) and Molly Lohman (11). Lohman also registered 8 of the team’s 11 blocks. Junior Setter, Samantha Seliger-Swenson, finished Saturday’s match with 54 assists.

What’s the average MPH on those spikes? My word. I’d be so panicked out there trying to dig those rockets. With my luck, someone would no doubt smoke me in the face. Meet the Parents type of shit:

The 10th ranked USC Trojans are next up for the Gophers, on Friday. That match will be played in Gainesville, FL, where the Gophers should be SLIGHT favorites, considering our current ranking of 7th.

Those rankings aren’t a team’s tournament seed. This isn’t March Madness. Minnesota’s ranking represents that they are considered the 7th best program in the country.
