Rick Pitino Returning to NCAA… and Isaiah Washington is His PG

We all needed a little buzz inside of the sports world this afternoon and Rick Pitino is here to give it to us. The senior Pitino will return to the world of college basketball next season, as the head coach at Iona University.

This is awesome news for basketball in America. Rick Pitino became the scapegoat of a nationwide college sports + shoe sponsorship scandal because he had the only graduate assistant coach doing things stupid enough to get them caught.

Rick will return as the coach of Iona College, which means Iona is about to be good at basketball for a few years, until Rick moves on to a bigger school.

While starting out, Rick’s team will be lead by a kid nicknamed “Jelly”, who happens to know Pitino’s pretty well. That’s right (in case you forgot), Isaiah Washington is now the point guard at Iona.

As you can see, Isaiah seemed to grow up a little bit this year (the competition level may have helped). He had the 3rd triple-double in school history in February (tweet above) and his stats are pretty damn solid on the year.

He averaged 11.4 PTS | 5.1 REB | 4.0 AST | 1.7 STL | 2.2 TO in 33 MPG last season. Those are pretty solid, especially the TO… We’ll see if he can get even better under Rick. I haven’t heard anything early on, that Rick may not want Washington as his PG or that Isaiah doesn’t want to play for him, but Rick has said some questionable things about Jelly in the past…

That was Rick Pitino on Isaiah Washington, just 1.5 years ago. It’s quite possible Rick believes Isaiah has matured, like he’d hoped. Or maybe not…… this was tweeted earlier today, before it was deleted.

You just cannot make this shit up.
