If there were any questions about how little the Green Bay Packers care about the Week 18 results against the Minnesota Vikings, they erased them on Thursday. Matt LaFleur had already indicated that the NFC’s No. 7 seed would rest their starters, and the quarterback decision confirmed it.

Both Jordan Love and Malik Willis have dealt with injuries this season. Love missed last week with a concussion and, despite beign cleared to return, will not play in the finale. Instead, LaFleur is dipping deep into the depth chart and starting Clayton Tune.

Clayton Tune to Start for Green Bay Against MN Vikings

Despite attempting just four passes this season and owning only 27 career attempts, Clayton Tune will make the second start of his NFL career. The former Houston Cougars quarterback is being elevated from the practice squad to lead Green Bay on Sunday.

A fifth-round pick by the Arizona Cardinals in 2023, Tune has appeared in 14 games but has yet to throw a touchdown pass at the NFL level. He has been intercepted three times, including earlier this season when he briefly stepped in the Green Bay against the Baltimore Ravens.

It’s unrealistic to expect Tune to perform at a high level, especially against Minnesota’s starting defensive unit. That could force Green Bay to lean on its backup situation, which isn’t entirely straightforward either.

The Packers signed former Atlanta Falcons starter Desmond Ridder on Wednesday. Ridder hasn’t appeared in a game this season, but he has spent some time on the Vikings practice squad twice, giving him some familiarity with Minnesota. Even if he doesn’t see the field, that insight could be valuable on the sideline.

Where do the Minnesota Vikings turn?

J.J. McCarthy continues to recover from a fracture in his throwing hand. Max Brosmer has been mediocre in limited opportunities, and Carson Wentz is out for the season. Kevin O’Connell has indicated that all options remain on the table, including John Wolford.

It makes little sense to play McCarthy at anything less than full strength. Even when healthy, his performance has been underwhelming. In nine games this season, the presumed starter has completed just 57.3% of his passes with an 11-to-12 TD/INT ratio.

McCarthy practiced in a limited capacity on Wednesday, a trend that is expected to continue throughout the week. Brosmer appears to have the inside track for the start, but the final decision won’t be known until O’Connell makes it official.

Big Names Highlight Minnesota Timberwolves Summer League Roster https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/summer-league-roster-2025-shannon-dillingham-zikarski-beringer/ Thu, 03 Jul 2025 23:45:29 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=64621 Terrence Shannon Jr., Minnesota Timberwolves

The NBA Draft is in the rearview mirror and the Minnesota Timberwolves grabbed a pair of 18-year-old big men. Both Rocco Zikarski and Joan Beringer are expected in Las Vegas to play in the NBA Summer League.

Those two youngsters aren’t the only big names to represent the Timberwolves this summer. Minnesota needs Rob Dillingham to take serious steps forward this offseason and he’ll be given the chance to showcase where he’s at. Fellow first round pick Terrence Shannon Jr. will join him.

Second year talent make MN Timberwolves Summer League roster

Rob Dillingham looked like he needed much more development than Terrence Shannon Jr. did last season as rookies in the NBA. Both of them are going to get run for the Minnesota Timberwolves during the Summer League circuit in Las Vegas. The roster was made public on Thursday.

The most notable names on the roster outside of the two recent draft picks include Dillingham, Shannon Jr., Miller, and Clark. Each of them got run during different parts of the Minnesota Timberwolves regular season last year.

Shannon Jr. has arguably already outgrown the constraints of the Summer League. He played in 32 games last season for Minnesota and averaged 10.6 minutes per game. He scored just 4.3 points per game, but was a bright spot when the training wheels came off.

The Timberwolves saw Shannon Jr. record a career-high 25 points against the Los Angeles Lakers in February, and he poured in double-digits on five separate occasions. With the departure of Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Shannon Jr. looks like a prime candidate to pick up extra minutes in the rotation.

It will be interesting to see how both Brenginer and Zikarski fare stateside. The former is expected to join Minnesota this season and could push for minutes as a backup center. The latter is expected to stay in Australia and continue to develop until the Timberwolves need his services.

Dillingham showed flashes that made him a lottery pick last season. Unfortunately they didn’t translate to consistent production at the NBA level and he was often riding the pine. The Minnesota Timberwolves desperately need a facilitator to run the offense and contribute behind Mike Conley. Dillingham’s opportunity is right in front of him.

The NBA Summer League starts on July 10 and the championship game is scheduled for July 20th. Minnesota kicks off their practices on Monday July 7th and will be led by assistant coach Kevin Hanson.

Lindsey Vonn Has Another Record in Her Sights https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/uncategorized/lindsey-vonn-trying-for-record-oldest-olympic-medalist-alpine-skiing/ Sun, 12 Jan 2025 22:47:05 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=59145 Lindsey Vonn - Alpine Skiing: 2024 Stifel Birds of Prey Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup
Michael Madrid-Imagn Images

My editor doesn’t think this piece will get clicks, but if you’re a fan of Minnesota sports, you’re a fan of Lindsey Vonn. And at 40 years old, Vonn could very well be the best women’s alpine skier in the country.

The Lindsey Vonn comeback tour has begun

Vonn proved she’s still atop the sport by finishing sixth — and first amongst Americans — in her first downhill race since 2019, which was this week at St. Anton in Austria. On a titanium knee, Vonn finished just over half a second off the pace, which was set by Federica Brignone (Italy).

She also overcame poor visibility to finish fourth in the super-G race the next day, which has historically been her second-best event. It’s also the one that’s given her the biggest bruises.

Because of her storied injury history and advanced age, Vonn took a lot of crap from fellow alpine skiers for making a comeback after almost six years away from the sport. Now she looks to have a legitimate shot to qualify for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.

Vonn dated Tiger Woods, which makes her one of the bravest women alive. Although her return to competitive skiing might be enough indication of her bravery given some of the spills she’s taken, surgeries she’s had, and sacrifices she’s made.

One last alpine skiing record for Lindsey Vonn?

If Vonn qualifies for the 2026 Winter Olympics, she can medal. That’s the type of competitor she is — living on the edge — skiing the fall line. It’s the fastest way down the mountain after all. But it’s also the most dangerous.

“Vonn should see a psychologist… Does she want to kill herself?”

-Michaela Dorfmeister on Lindsey Vonn’s daring style

Of course, Lindsey Vonn isn’t trying to die, but she is willing to do whatever it takes to eclipse France’s Johan Clarey — who was 41 years and 30 days old when he broke the record — as the oldest Olympic medalist in alpine skiing, a record Vonn — who will be 41 in October of this year — would own if she is able to medal in the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Related: Vikings Insider Warns: Do Not Discount Kevin O’Connell Trade Rumors…

So why is she doing this? Why wouldn’t she? Vonn can still ski with the best of them and ain’t scared of doing what it takes to beat them all one more time. Regardless, Lindsey Vonn skiing is what’s best for skiing. More importantly, it seems to be what’s best for Lindsey Vonn.

From Burnsville’s Buck Hill to Olympic Gold

Lindsey Vonn started skiing when she was just two years old at Burnsville’s Buck Hill. Her father was apparently very hard on her according to her coach, Erich Sailer. Since then she’s gone on to win 82 World Cup races — second-most in the sport.

She’s also been on the World Cup podium 137 times, winning World Championship gold twice, along with three silvers, and three bronzes. Vonn also has an Olympic gold medal and two Olympic bronze medals, the latest of which came in 2018. Lindsey Vonn was still third-best in the World Championships when she retired in 2019.

Vonn isn’t a stranger of Austria, where this week’s race was held. It’s where she keeps her collection of livestock trophies. Yes, that’s apparently a thing in skiing. Most competitors get rid of their living trophies. Not Vonn. She keeps them with a farmer friend in Austria.

Twins, Scott Boras Working Hard to Slow Rising Tide of Carlos Correa Trade Rumors https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/uncategorized/carlos-correa-trade-rumors-scott-boras-slows-speculation/ Thu, 12 Dec 2024 18:10:56 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=58143 Carlos Correa, Minnesota Twins
Matt Blewett-Imagn ImagesMatt Blewett-Imagn Images

The Minnesota Twins are going to trade Carlos Correa. Or, maybe the Minnesota Twins aren’t going to trade Carlos Correa. Other teams have come calling, we know that much. What we don’t know is how aggressive Minnesota is acting, and what the positioning of each involved party is.

Scott Boras certainly isn’t hearing anything about his client wanting to move. Correa has a full no-trade clause, and the superstar shortstop appears content to stay put.

Squashing the Minnesota Twins Carlos Correa trade rumors

Juan Soto was always going to be the prize of this offseason. For teams willing to pay $700 million though, the runner-ups are likely willing to pay the remaining four years of Carlos Correa’s six year, $200 million deal. The Yankees were immediately connected. Now the Red Sox have been too.

Correa’s agent, who worked to secure him three separate deals after a pair fell through, said the the shortstop likes Minnesota.

“The last time I talked to him, he told me the fishing was good. So, yeah, he’s happy there.”

Scott Boras on Correa staying put (Star Tribune)

Any motivation for Correa to waive his no trade clause would come on the premise of Minnesota failing to compete. Derek Falvey has his hands tied financially, but that’s not the fault of Correa. It’s also certainly not the priority of a mega agent interested in keeping his client happy.

Although he dealt with injury last season, he still posted a 152 OPS+ in 86 games. His .310 average was just shy (.315) of a career-high. His 4.3 fWAR led the team. The defensive ability at shortstop is virtually unmatched.

Related: Another Big Market Team Reportedly Has Interest in Carlos Correa

If Correa wants to remain with the Twins, and wants Boras to make it known, then he has done his part.

Who’s to believe when it comes to the Twins Correa?

That question is relatively straightforward. Boras hasn’t suggested Correa wants to be traded, and Correa himself has said as much as well. Derek Falvey and Rocco Baldelli don’t want to lose his talent, but the head of the front office also sees it as a path to reallocate funds.

“He’s a key member of the clubhouse. Obviously, you expect teams to call on players like that, especially with where we are and some of the conversations we’re having with other clubs. But we want to win, so a high bar is set.”

Derek Falvey on trading Carlos Correa (The Athletic)

Falvey hasn’t taken his best player off the table. That is enough to continue encouraging other franchises the opportunity to bring their best offer. On the flip side, Baldelli is not interested.

“When you take a guy away who’s one of the top players in the game… you’re really going to be left searching and looking to figure things out… He was exceptional last year. He did it on both sides of the ball. He does it after the game, before the game. He sets a tone… I think he still has all of the qualities that you would look for in a very good shortstop.”

Rocco Baldelli on Carlos Correa (The Athletic)

There’s no denying that having Carlos Correa on the team, and on the field, makes Baldelli’s job easier. If the Twins are trying to win baseball games, then there’s no reason to remove a talent like that. A self-imposed payroll limitation means adding players around him is more difficult.

It’s not a shock that Falvey would want to see what other options can be presented for his best and most expensive player. That inherently raises the possibility of a trade coming to fruition. Ultimately though, there’s no expectation for a return that makes sense.

Related: Minnesota Twins Select Pitcher in 2024 Rule 5 Draft

Derek Falvey wants you to call him with an outlandish offer. Rocco Baldelli wants to write his star’s name into the lineup. Scott Boras and Carlos Correa don’t need to keep watching it play out.

Former Minnesota Vikings Cornerback Can’t Believe He’s Still Out of Work https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/uncategorized/cam-dantzler-baffled-by-unemployment/ Thu, 05 Dec 2024 18:24:34 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=57929 Cam Dantzler, Minnesota Vikings
Brad Rempel-Imagn ImagesBrad Rempel-Imagn Images

It has been quite some time since the Minnesota Vikings employed Cam Dantzler. He was cut prior to the 2023 NFL season and took a job with the New Orleans Saints. Since then he’s been completely non-existent and the reasons are a surprise to him as well.

Old Minnesota Vikings friend Cam Dantzler is shocked by unemployment

The Minnesota Vikings drafted Cam Dantzler in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft. That was before Kwesi Adofo-Mensah took over. He lasted just a single season playing for Kevin O’Connell, under then-defensive coordinator Ed Donatell.

Dantzler played 10 games for the Vikings in 2022, and then his time in Minnesota was up. In 2023, he landed in New Orleans, where he appeared in two games. He was waived by the Saints on January 1, 2024, and he has not sniffed an NFL roster since. Why? Cam is asking the same question.

The tweets above were Dantzler’s first since November 21, and they seemed to come somewhat out of nowhere. Clearly, the 26-year-old former Mississippi State Bulldog was in his feelings, though, and felt like sharing it on the internet.

In 35 games for the Vikings, Dantzler started 26 times. He had 17 passes defensed and totalled 3 interceptions. Through three seasons wearing purple, he also totaled 149 tackles and 2 fumble recoveries.. Given his size (6’2″) and starting history, it is a bit surprising he hasn’t been able to find a job, given how much teams are always on the search for secondary help.

With the New Orleans Saints, Dantzler played in just a pair of games. He was inactive the final three weeks of last season and hasn’t been in NFL action since October 1, 2023. Prior to 2023, Dantzler was claimed and waived by Washington, Buffalo, and Houston all before seeing action.

Is there a future in football for former Vikings cornerback Cam Dantzler?

It remains to be seen whether this is the end of the line for Dantzler. Obviously his comments suggest he’d like to be back out on the field somewhere. The cornerback position remains integral for NFL teams and there are enough bad talents that you’d think he could work his way in somewhere.

Cam is still working out and staying ready, but the layoff isn’t going to help his cause. That may be on him, though. In April, he was signed by the UFL San Antonio Brahmans, but suspended less than a week later, and never played a game.

Related: Vikings DC Brian Flores Ruled Out for One Possible NFL Head Coaching Job; Other Interesting Fits Floated

Cam Dantzler then had opportunity in the CFL, a couple months ago, but never found the field with the Hamilton Tiger Cats, either. Even former head coach Mike Zimmer isn’t interested in a reunion with his former draftee, even if the Dallas Cowboys defense could use the help.

Minnesota Vikings Injury Update: Latest News on Darnold, Robinson and Pace Jr  https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-vikings/minnesota-vikings-news/injury-update-week-13-monday/ Mon, 25 Nov 2024 20:45:47 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=57613 NFL: Minnesota Vikings at Chicago Bears
Daniel Bartel-Imagn ImagesDaniel Bartel-Imagn Images

The Minnesota Vikings improved to 9-2 after narrowly escaping with a 30-27 overtime win against the Chicago Bears, thanks to a clutch game-winning field goal by John Parker Romo.

The Vikings had some tough luck with injuries during the game. Early on, newly-acquired tackle Cam Robinson and standout linebacker Ivan Pace both went down and didn’t make it back to the field. Later in the game, QB Sam Darnold also got banged up but eventually returned.

Kevin O’Connell gives update on injured Minnesota Vikings

After the game, head coach Kevin O’Connell spoke to the media about the win and the team’s injuries. He didn’t share much about Cam Robinson or Ivan Pace Jr., saying updates would come after Monday’s evaluations.

On Monday, O’Connell didn’t have much more to offer, though he did say that Cam Robinson has had this type of injury before, and played through it. Unfortunately, things may not be as optimistic for Ivan Pace Jr, though we will all cross our fingers and hope that is incorrect.

Darnold, Pace, and Robinson are key players for the Vikings. Losing any of them would hurt. Given Sam returned to the game, after needing two plays off, you’d have to think he suits up on Sunday. We should know more in the next few days to see if there’s real cause for concern.

Related: Early Vikings vs Cardinals Betting Odds – Minnesota Opens as Slight Favorite

A few weeks ago, Darnold picked up a minor hand injury during the Jaguars game, but it didn’t cost him any playing time. Now it’s his foot that’s in question. Worried? Not after you see the interaction he had with KOC, when he came back into the game on Sunday.

Coach Teddy Bridgewater Closing in on High School State Championship https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/uncategorized/teddy-bridgewater-state-championship-nfl-return/ Wed, 20 Nov 2024 18:11:59 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=57476 Teddy Bridgewater
Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORKJunfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK

As recently as last season, former Minnesota Vikings first round draft pick Teddy Bridgewater was playing in the NFL. This fall, however, he is a head football coach at his alma mater, Northwestern High School, in Miami, Florida. How is it going for the rookie head coach?

Former Minnesota Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater nearing state title as high school head coach

Well, the Bulls are 8-2 on the year and earned the No. 1 overall playoff seed in their section, thanks to a five game winning streak, to close their regular season. How did his head coaching postseason debut go? A 69-0 route over Barron Collier (Naples, FL). Now that’s how you send a message to the rest of the state tourney field.

Related: Vikings Executive Floated as Candidate for GM Job He May Not Want

Northwestern (Miami, FL) is set to square off against the 4-seed (7-4) Lely Trojans on Friday, another school out of Naples. The two teams have not played each other this season. Bridgewater and his squad need four straight victories to claim what would be Northwestern’s ninth state championship.

Bridgewater not done as an NFL QB just yet?

Of course, securing the No. 1 seed and blowing out your first round opponent guarantees nothing. Northwestern still has a long way to go. No matter, it appears our old friend Teddy Bridgewater is pretty good at this whole coaching thing. That doesn’t mean he’s done playing football, though, which he made clear in a tweet yesterday.

Maybe he’s serious about a return to the league, but right now Teddy is proving his talent as a football coach. Bridgewater played in 79 career NFL games. It would be wild to see a 32-year-old Bridgewater return to the NFL after winning a high school state title as a head coach. I suppose if he’s healthy and has the itch though, that could be a nice launching pad.

Sometimes you go from being an NCAA champion to an Olympian, WWE superstar, and NFL hopeful. If that isn’t a crazy enough journey in and of itself, imagine returning to the amateur level after it all. That’s precisely the path that Minnesota Gophers wrestling legend Gable Steveson is taking. He’s back to dominate the mat once again.

Minnesota Gophers get Gable Steveson’s last ride

The last time that Gable Steveson wore a Minnesota Gophers singlet was the 2021-22 season. He was granted an additional year of eligibility due to circumstances stemming from the Covid-19 pandemic. With the landscape having changed since then, he is returning to his amateur roots to crush the souls of the competition once again.

“My name is Gable Steveson. I’m an Olympic champion, two-time NCAA Champion, the first and only two-time Dan Hodge Trophy winner for the heavyweight class. First, I would like to thank the University of Minnesota, for their time and effort for their persistence with me to push me to the man I am today. With all this being said, there is still one thing inside of me that still burns. The burning passion, the competitiveness, the itch to become great again, and add to the legacy of Gable Steveson. Minnesota has given me everything and now it’s my turn to give it right back to them. To put my feet back on the wrestling mat. To be the champ.”

Gable Steveson on his return to Minnesota Wrestling (X)

The laundry list of achievements for Steveson is long. He has an Olmypic gold medal. He drew interest from the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills despite never having played football. He was paid by Triple-H. At this point, in the NIL era, no one believes that collegiate sports are truly amateur level. Steveson knows this as well, and he should rake in endorsement opportunities.

After appearing in a preseason game with the Buffalo Bills, Steveson returns to his ridiculous 85-2 collegiate wrestling record. There’s no reason to believe he’ll add another loss to the tally, so a third NCAA championship should be coming to his mantle shortly. Obviously it’s a massive boost to the Gophers wrestling roster, and fans of the sport have a huge name to watch this season.

The impact of NIL funds continue to reshape the landscape of collegiate sports. Steveson certainly is ready and willing to compete, but financial implications have to be part of the equation as well. This is his final year of eligibility.
