We aren’t even to the halfway point of the Minnesota Wild season and it’s already been one heck of a roller coaster ride. They started so slow that it legitimately felt like their season was in jeopardy.

Fast forward a few weeks and the MN Wild have earned points in each of their last 12 games, 10 of which they walked away as victors, with two points in-hand. Suddenly, they’re the hottest team in hockey, entering their matchup tonight in Calgary.

Minnesota Wild goalies leading early-season charge

There is plenty of credit to go around, for the Wild’s early-season turnaround. But amongst the most notable has been the ridiculously good goalie play. Both Filip Gustavsson and rookie Jesper Wallstedt have been lights out for most of the last month.

Gus Bus playing well is no surprise. There’s a reason president of hockey operations Bill Guerin extended him in the offseason. What has been a VERY pleasant surprise, however, is Wallstedt — who currently leads the league in shutouts with four.

In fact, Jesper has been playing so well that he’s starting to catch the eye of those voting for the 2025-26 Calder Trophy, which is awarded at the end of every season to the league’s top rookie.

Jesper Wallstedt gaining Calder Trophy steam

On Thursday, ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski noted that, while Islanders forward Matthew Schaefer is currently the leader in the Calder Trophy clubhouse, Wallstedt is quickly gaining steam. In other words, ‘objects in your mirror may be closer than they appear’.

San Jose Sharks goalie Yaroslav Askarov is the only other rookie receiving votes over at ESPN, and he did get more than Wallstedt. Askarov is also a goalie (.910 save percentage, 2.96 GAA). If the Minnesota Wild netminder is going to have a real chance, he’ll have to play well enough to catch both Schafer and Askarov.

Over Schaefer’s shoulder are two young goaltenders who were the only other rookies to earn first-place votes from our panelists this month.

Minnesota’s Wallstedt earned just under 10% of the first-place votes thanks to a startling first 10 games for the Wild, during which he posted an 8-0-2 record, a. 944 save percentage and a 1.74 goals-against average.

It’s a limited sample vs. the other two finalists, but “The Wall of St. Paul” is making his mark early.

Greg Wyshynski – ESPN

Jesper Wallstedt has played 10 games this season for the MN Wild, and he is yet to lose a game in regulation. Having a near-50% shoutout rate is absurd, but his .944 save percentage is pacing the NHL too.

MN Wild rookie Jesper Wallstedt trying to help make NHL history

According to Wyshynski, the last time two goalies finished in the top three for Calder Trophy voting was in 1964-65, when Roger Crozier (Detroit) won it and Denis DeJordy (Chicago) finished third.

There were concerns as to how Wallstedt would fare, after being elevated into a regular NHL role, after Marc-Andre Fleury retired. But the Swedish goalie pairing in St. Paul has instead proven to be arguably the best in the league so far this season, which is now more than a quarter of the way complete.

It has been quite the turnaround for the Minnesota Wild. After a slow and ugly start to the season, they have been an absolute wagon lately. Jesper Wallstedt looks unbeatable, and the 14-7-5 record has John Hynes’ team flying high.

What makes this run even more impressive is that Minnesota has been doing it while missing multiple key players. As they work toward returning to full strength, there is finally progress on that front.

Marco Rossi ramping up for Minnesota Wild

Wild center Marco Rossi has been out since November 11 with a lower-body injury. Earlier in the season, center play was one of the team’s biggest issues, and getting him back should provide an additional boost. The Athletic’s Michael Russo provided an update the Austrian’s timeline.

Minnesota hammered out an extension for their former ninth-overall pick this offseason. After logging 82 games in each of the past two seasons, he was expected to take on a key role this year.

The franchise and its young star have had a rocky relationship in the past, but strong play tends to quiet everything. Although Rossi has posted a minus-6 through 17 games, he also has four goals and nine assists. Hynes should be able to insert him back into the lineup and expect that level of play to continue.

It doesn’t sound like Rossi will be immediately available for the road trip, but the fact that he’s traveling is an encouraging sign for his return.

MN Wild without Danila Yurov

Rookie Danila Yurov hasn’t missed significant time this season, but he will be unavailable to the Wild on Tuesday. He was injured on November 26 against the Chicago Blackhawks, yet remained available for each of the past two games.

Avoiding a lengthy absence would be a positive, and the fact that he played twice after the initial injury is certainly encouraging.

Through 21 games this season, Yurov has three goals and four assists. The 21-year-old Russian is getting his first NHL experience and has made an impact despite averaging just over 11.5 minutes of ice time.

Minnesota begins its road swing Tuesday in Edmonton, followed by stops in Calgary and Vancouver before wrapping up in Seattle against the Kraken.

The Minnesota Wild are back on the ice Friday afternoon against the Colorado Avalanche. Without a doubt, it’s the biggest test of their recent hot streak, and a matchup they enter as +155 underdogs.

Minnesota Wild place Marcus Foligno on injured reserve

And late this morning, they got some bad news on the injury front when 34-year-old forward Marcus Foligno was placed on injured reserve, after he suffered a lower-body injury earlier this week against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Foligno has been a declining asset on the ice for a couple of years now, but what he brings to the MN Wild locker room is undeniable, which is why president of hockey operations Bill Guerin has no interest in trading him before the deadline.

On the season, Marcus Foligno is averaging 13:07 TOI, down over a minute from his career average of 14:15. He’s mounted just two points in 2025-26, both assists, playing mostly third line wing.

There isn’t much out there on how serious Foligno’s injury is or how long he may sit on injured reserve. Look for a corresponding move on the Minnesota Wild horizon, as well.

Last season the Minnesota Wild got to experience the final year of Marc-Andre Fleury’s Hall of Fame career. The three-time Stanley Cup winner paired with Filip Gustvasson as netminders for a 45-30-7 team.

This season the goalie position was a point of concern for Wild fans. Although Gustavsson earned a long-term extension, unproven rookie Jesper Wallstedt was set to back him up.

The team got out to an ugly start, but both goalies are now rolling, and it’s the rookie backup that has taken over the NHL lead.

Jesper Wallstedt serves up another shutout for Wild

Through their first 12 games of the season the Minnesota Wild were just 3-6-3. Now 12-7-4 after a shutout road win against the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday, they are among the hottest teams in the league. A significant reason for that is rookie Jesper Wallstedt and his league-leading three shutouts.

Only five goalies have at least two shutouts this season. Among them is Wallstedt’s teammate Gustavsson. The other three are Sergei Bobrovsky, Ilya Sorokin, and Joey Daccord. With just 13 games under his belt 30.7% of his starts have resulted in shutout victories.

Wallstedt’s .935 save percentage trails only Jonathan Quick amongst qualified goalies, and with a 6-0-2 record, he has yet to lose in regulation. To say that this is an ideal start to his rookie season would be putting things lightly.

The Minnesota Wild have made a habit of first-round playoff exits. In order to avoid that same fate, they will be relying on the development of key young players. Wallstedt is among the most important of that considering the way a hot goalie can carry a team to a Stanley Cup.

If this is the sort of goaltending the Wild are going to get from their tandem this season, then it shouldn’t be difficult for them to sustain hot streaks. Kirill Kaprizov is doing his thing offensively, and now he’s got a young netminder stepping up on the back end too.

In 2024-25, the Minnesota Wild employed one of the best veteran goalie tandems in the league. Marc-Andre Fleury will waltz into the NHL Hall of Fame as soon as he is eligible — having amassed three Stanley Cups and 575 regular season wins during his legendary career.

Filip Gustavsson, however, took over as the Wild’s clear No. 1 netminder a year ago, starting 52 of Minnesota’s 82 regular season games (.914 save %, 2.56 GAA).

Meanwhile, 2021 1st round pick Jesper Wallstedt struggled down in AHL Iowa, posting an ugly .879 save % and 3.59 GAA, after an early-season demotion rattled him mentally. But fast forward one year, to 2025-26, and Minnesota’s goaltending duties now fall solely on their two Swedish netminders.

Following Fleury’s retirement this offseason, which opened a goalie spot up in St. Paul, the Wild did not hesitate to make the former No. 20 overall pick their big league backup, despite Wallstedt’s struggles last season. And so far, the kid has paid off their trust in a big way.

Jesper Wallstedt logs second-straight shutout for Minnesota Wild

Last week on November 9, the Minnesota Wild won a controversial shocker in Calgary in which Wallstedt saved all 36 shots put on net by the Flames. And again Saturday night, this time at home against the Anaheim Ducks, the newly-turned 23-year-old dazzled, saving all 28 shots on net, making it 64-straight saves without allowing a goal.

With the 11-5-1 Ducks peppering him on Saturday night, Wallstedt turned away a pair of power play shots as well as three shorthanded attempts. The second shutout now leads the entire NHL. Even more noteworthy, Jesper’s .924 save % and 2.10 goals against average is better than Gustavsson’s .896 save % and 3.09 GAA.

Saturday night against Anaheim, the MN Wild got goals from both Matt Boldy and Marcus Johansson to secure their 2-0 victory. The win pushed Minnesota’s record to 8-7-4 on the season, as they continue to build back from a slow start.

Wallstedt now has eleven total games behind his NHL mask and he seemingly gets better ever time he skates between the posts. The Wild will need their young goalie to continue his growth spurt, if they are going to find their way into the Western Conference playoff picture.

The youngster’s 4-0-2 record to start the season is just what the doctor ordered, in that regard. Minnesota is back in action on Sunday for a back-to-back against the Las Vegas Nights at Grand Casino Arena.

The Minnesota Wild took their first loss in three games out on Thursday night, out east a disappointing 4-3 miss against the Carolina Hurricanes. It was a weird game, tons of scoring early… then nothing for most of two periods.

Last night’s game went went into the second period, 3-2. Before one minute had even gone off the clock, however, it was already 4-3, thanks to three goals in a matter of 46 seconds, to start the middle period.

The last two goals of the evening came off of Boldy (at 00:37), which tied it up at 3-3. Nine seconds later, Carolina took the lead back on Nikolaj Ehlers goal. It was the second of the night for both guys. And that’s where it stayed for the rest of the contest, even as Minnesota fought its way back in the Shots on Goal department.

At one point midway through the second period, the Wild were being outshot by the Canes 22-6. At that point the score was already 4-3. By the time the final horn sounded at the end of the third period, the score was the same but the SOG gap was down to 27-24.

Minnesota Wild getting Mats Zuccarello back?

Mats Zuccarello — who has missed the Wild’s first 15 games with a lower-body-injury — traveled with the team out east, but did not play on Thursday. The mysterious injury/surgery was sprung on media and the fanbase prior to training camp, but it sounds like the 38-year-old is ready to get back on the ice.

According to Michael Russo (The Athletic), Kirill Kaprizov’s partner in crime is expected to make his 2025-26 debut Friday night, when Minnesota plays the second of a back-to-back in the Metro Division, this time in Elmont, NY against the 6-5-2 Islanders. He was activated late this morning.

“Mats Zuccarello was with the Wild on this trip, as we reported earlier this week, and is likely to make his season debut Friday on Long Island against the Islanders. Zuccarello missed the first month of the season after having surgery on his lower-body injury.”

The Minnesota Wild need Mats Zuccarello’s offense back, and the plan is for him to get back on a top line with Kirill Kaprizov. That should allow Matt Boldy to move off of his line for good, creating a much more balanced offensive attack up and down a lineup that’s been very top heavy, in Zuccarello’s absence.

And they need help on that side of the ice desperately. The season is still early, but the MN Wild have occupied the bottom of the Central Division standings for most of the season, thus far. If Zuccy can’t help change that in a big way, this is an organization that will have a lot of questions going into the NHL Trade Deadline later this season.

The Minnesota Wild are in the process of getting their 2025-26 season back on track, after a two-week stretch of eight losses in nine games to close out October nearly sent it into a tailspin before they ever got up in the air.

So coming off a win over the weekend against Vancouver, the Wild went into their game Tuesday night against the division rival Nashville Predators desperate to start up a different kind of streak. And for 59 minutes and 59.9 seconds, it felt like Minnesota would do just that, even though they got outplayed for much of the night.

Minnesota Wild vs Nashville Predators starts kinda slow

At the 10:44 mark of the 1st period, it was the MN Wild who scored first on a (surprise) Kirill Kaprizov power play goal that made the score 1-0, early.

Then, after the Preds tied it at 1-1 early in the 2nd period (05:16), the home Wild took control back, via tip-in goal from rookie Zeev Buium, off a point shot from fellow youngster defenseman, Brock Faber. You love to see it.

For the next period-plus, Minnesota shakily held their 2-1 lead. Naturally, with a couple minutes left Nashville pulled goalie Justus Annunen. After the Wild missed an open net twice from long-range, the Predators spent the final 47 seconds of regulation in the MN zone, firing at Filip Gustavsson.

Still, when Joel Eriksson Ek got control of the puck and turned to fire it out of danger with just 4 seconds remaining on the clock, a Wild victory felt all but official… until it wasn’t.

Preds tie game with 0.02 remaining in regulation

Ek failed to get his clearing attempt off the boards and beyond Preds’ defenseman Nick Blankenburg, who got control of the puck, waited a moment, then passed cross-ice to the left slot where Steven Stamkos was waiting for a one-timer that blew past Gustavsson with 0.02 seconds remaining.

Related: MN Wild Nearly Dead Last in Early Power Rankings

To the Wild’s credit, this could have been the demoralizing type of goal that cost Minnesota its much needed winning streak. But that’s not what happened.

In overtime, the chances went back and forth for a few minutes, until Minnesota got a breakaway at the 3:30 mark that lead to one of the crazier finishes you will see in a National Hockey League game.

Insane end to Wild vs Preds regulation leads to even crazier overtime finale

After a Marcus Johansson takeaway, the Wild came down 3-on-2 with Kaprizov leading the rush from the right side. He passed middle to Brock Faber. He then skated through the slot before going back to Kaprizov, who then went back across the front of the crease to Marcus Johansson, who tried to flip it into the left side of the goal.

Unfortunately, the Nashville goal was no longer parallel with the red line, because as Kaprizov’s pass came across, it was knocked off its left mooring. So when Johansson got the puck, the back of the net was actually in the process of swinging toward him.

Johansson’s first shot attempt hit the outside of the spinning net and bounced back to him, so he went to his backhand and floated it passed the red line, where there was no longer a goal in place to catch it. Nonetheless, the referee immediately signaled a Minnesota Wild goal, as the puck hit the boards behind where the net should have been.

The referee crew reviewed the play but didn’t take long to confirm the call on the ice. Essentially, NHL rule 25.2 states that, if a net is knocked off its mooring (intentionally or accidentally) during an imminent scoring opportunity, like Johansson’s above, a goal will be awarded.

Minnesota Wild winning goal explained

Former Minnesota Wild player, now Nashville Predators coach, Andrew Brunette, sat dumbfounded on the away bench, as the crowd went crazy and Wild players celebrated on the ice. Even if he didn’t know the rule, he could not have been all that surprised by this call.

If it wasn’t a goal, it had to be a penalty shot or something. Common sense says that you shouldn’t be able to displace the net when an opponent is about to score. Fortunately for the MN Wild, the NHL rulebook says the same thing.

  • 25.2 Infractions – When a Goalkeeper is On the Ice – A goal will be awarded when an attacking player, with an imminent scoring opportunity, is prevented from scoring as a result of a defending player or goalkeeper displacing the goal post, either deliberately or accidentally.

Halloween is now in the rearview mirror, but that doesn’t mean the Minnesota Wild don’t have plenty of frightful scenes still in front of them. To say they have gotten out of the gate slowly this season would be putty it kindly.

John Hynes’ team has looked mediocre to downright inept far to often this season. That’s not a good look when the roster was largely kept status quo from last season. At 3-6-3, their nine points are among the worst across the entire NHL. That’s reflected in early power rankings as well.

Power rankings way down on MN Wild early

There was a time before the season started that certain insiders suggested the Minnesota Wild may be a dark horse Stanley Cup contender. Then the puck dropped and the team has imploded. It would be impossible to overlook their performance thus far, and early power rankings have them in the basement.

OutletRankingPrevious
ESPN30th21st
The Athletic29th21st

There aren’t many more places for the Wild to fall after dropping from 21st at both ESPN and The Athletic. Each outlet fairly assessed the reason for the fall as well.

Starting next season, Kirill Kaprizov will be skating on the richest deal in NHL history, after inking that eight-year, $17 million per year deal this fall. Unlike Scrooge, Kaprizov hasn’t been stingy since putting his autograph on the contract, with 15 points through 11 games.

ESPN

Minnesota is 3-6-3, they’ve won one of their last nine, they’ve lost five straight, they’re getting booed off the ice at home and they’re one of the worst five-on-five teams in the league. Other than that, everything is fine.

The Athletic

Kaprizov now has 16 points through 12 games, but plenty of that production has been hollow and come at less than even-strength. He’s also a -5 thus far, and has little help around him.

This was the potential bed general manager Bill Guerin made when opting to run virtually the same roster back. Despite cap space, not much has been shuffled and the young depth has yet to make a substantial impact.

It’s still early for Minnesota, but it’s getting late early for John Hynes. If the head coach can’t get better efforts rolling soon, he won’t be around to see what the eventual outcome looks like anyways. Minnesota is back on the ice Saturday against Vancouver.

Jerome Miron-Imagn Images

The Minnesota Wild are back on the ice out East Monday evening against the New York Rangers, the third leg of a four game swing through the Metro division that has not been kind to our favorite NHL team through two games.

Unfortunately, they will have to figure out how to turn things around without top six centerman, Marco Rossi, who was not on the ice in New York today for Minnesota’s morning skate. Taking his place on the second line was Ryan Hartman, who was centering Johansson and Tarasenko.

With Rossi out, the Wild will keep Kaprizov and Boldy together on the top line, centered by Eriksson Ek. Russian Rookie Danila Yurov will center the third line, between Foligno and Hinostroza, according to who Joe Smith (The Athletic) reported was on the ice together at Monday’s practice.

Minnesota Wild give update on Marco Rossi injury

After the skating session, MN Wild head coach John Hynes revealed to reporters that Marco suffered a lower-body injury blocking a shot in the 3rd period Saturday vs Philly. Thankfully, Hynes seems hopeful Rossi’s time out of the Wild lineup will be short-lived.

No matter what you think about Marco Rossi (I’m talking to you, Bill Guerin), but the Minnesota Wild need him — and anyone else with a lick of offensive talent — to be fully available so they can pull themselves out of this early-season swoon they’ve become stuck in.

How bad is it? In their past three games, the Wild have scored a total of four goals. During the first two games of their East Coast swing, not only did Minnesota only score two total goals… but they fired just 30 total shots on net — 14 vs the Caps and 16 vs the Flyers.

Wild need Rossi… and any other offense they can find

In six games this season — fresh off signing an offseason extension that took years to iron out — Marco Rossi has collected five points (1 goal and 4 assists), helping to account for exactly one quarter of the MN Wild’s offensive production (20 goals). So making up his 18:07 TOI won’t be easy.

Let’s just pray that the MN Wild can pull out a gritty victory tonight in Madison Square Garden, and that Rossi returns to a lineup with a bit of momentum on Wednesday in New Jersey. Anything short of that would be worrisome.

The Minnesota Wild are dropping the puck this evening in Philadelphia, as they limp to the finish line on a three game road trip that’s resulted in an 0-2 record entering the final leg. But before they got started out East, president of hockey operations Bill Guerin opted for a shake-up.

Minnesota Wild shake up roster, Liam Ohgren sent down

In a flurry of afternoon roster moves, the MN Wild recalled defenseman David Jiricek and forward Tyler Pitlick from AHL Iowa. The former will replace the injured Zach Bogosian; the latter will take the spot of Liam Ohgren, who was sent down to the AHL Wild amid Saturday’s reshuffling.

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota Wild President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Bill Guerin today announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has recalled defenseman David Jiříček (YIHR-ih-chehk) and forward Tyler Pitlick from the Iowa Wild of the American Hockey League (AHL) and assigned forward Liam Öhgren (OH-gren) to Iowa.

Minnesota Wild Press Release – 3:00 PM, October 18, 2025

Related: Problems Up the Middle Could Cause Wild to Break Up Superstars

Prior to his demotion, Liam Ohgren played in all five of Minnesota’s games this season, averaging 09:10 time on ice. Unfortunately, his early season production (0 goals, 0 assists, -4 +/-) was not what Wild coaches and executives were hoping for from the 21-year-old.

After Ohgren played as well as he did during camp, and off a 2024-25 down in Iowa in which he scored 19 goals (37 points) in just 41 games, the talented young Swed was supposed to be taking the next step in his development and helping to provide an offensive punch on the fourth line that most NHL teams do not have.

Ohgren scores immediately for Iowa Wild

So, Guerin sent him down to Iowa to hopefully get right. And if scoring seven minutes into your first game back in the AHL isn’t the start of something good… then I don’t know what is. But that’s exactly what Liam Ohgren did for the Minnesota Wild affiliate on Saturday night.
