It’s not unreasonable to suggest the Minnesota Timberwolves could chase a championship this season. But on Tuesday night, Chris Finch’s group needed overtime just to slip past a 3-18 New Orleans Pelicans team, a reminder that the road is far from smooth.

One thing is clear, though: the problem in Minnesota certainly does not lie with Anthony Edwards. The franchise star knows he has to elevate to an entirely new level in order to win a ring. He’s working towards that daily, and he won’t stop short of achieving it.

Timberwolves Get a Guarantee From Anthony Edwards

Edwards has been a dynamic force since the moment he entered the league. The No. 1 Pick in the 2020 draft continues to push the limits of his game, and his latest comments make it clear he’s nowhere close to finished.

If there’s one person who will never doubt Anthony Edwards’ greatness, it’s Anthony Edwards. At just 24 years old, he remains relentless, pushing himself forward with a level of tenacity few players can match.

Although he missed some time earlier this year, Edwards has appeared in 17 games and is averaging a career-best 29.8 points per game. Last season, he led the NBA in three-pointers made, and his 41.3% mark from deep this year is an improvement over his already strong 39.5% clip in 2024.

Edwards is currently riding a streak of six straight games with more than 30 points, and he’s cleared 40 in half of them.

Michael Jordan Dotes on Anthony Edwards

You can debate the running joke about whether Anthony Edwards might be Michael Jordan’s long lost son, but the comparison speaks to something real: Edwards would love to reach Jordan’s heights, and the NBA legend had him on his mind this offseason.

Edwards knows who the greatest player of all time is, and Jordan has firsthand experience with the pressures and evolution Edwards is now navigating. As the Timberwolves star continues finding his place in the league, more layers of his game will undoubtedly emerge.

Minnesota is witnessing something special as Edwards continues tapping into his immense potential. And given what he’s already producing, it’s wild to think we still haven’t seen his ceiling. The Timberwolves will need even more if they are going to win a title, and Edwards remains the most likely player to deliver it.

It has been an ugly run for the Minnesota Timberwolves of late. Anthony Edwards helped to waste a 40-burger against the Phoenix Suns, and the team carried their problems into a loss against the Sacramento Kings. Then an ugly closing stretch against Oklahoma City sank them into a three-game losing streak.

Minnesota bested the Boston Celtics on Saturday, and returned in a back-to-back Sunday with arguably the best closing stretch they have had all season. Edwards was in the middle of it, and he set a new franchise record in the process.

Timberwolves scoring title belongs to Anthony Edwards

Plenty of hoopla is generated when a player goes off for 40 or 50 points. Those are the outlier games though. Traditionally, an MVP-caliber player is going to average around 30 points per game, and now no one in Minnesota Timberwolves franchise history has had more of those games than Anthony Edwards.

Playing against the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday night, Edwards poured in 32 points for the Timberwolves. It was the 102nd time he has crossed the 30-point threshold in his career, and it broke a franchise tie with now New York Knicks big man Karl-Anthony Towns.

Minnesota saw Edwards reach the new record in 397 career games. Towns’ tally came across 573 games. Although the game was different back then, Kevin Garnett hit 30 points just 82 times in 970 games with the Timberwolves.

Edwards is averaging a career-best 28.7 points per game this season, but is being asked to do more overall. Since Tim Connelly didn’t shuffle the roster much this offseason, more pressure falls on the shoulders of Edwards. If Chris Finch’s team is going to make their first NBA Finals then the superstar has to find a new level. He can’t close out games like he did when they blew it against the Suns, but a 36-19 finish Sunday against the Spurs shows that the Timberwolves do have that dog somewhere in them.

Now 12-8 this season, the Minnesota Timberwolves can build momentum off of their latest win. They are back in action Tuesday in New Orleans against the Pelicans. The two sides play each other in consecutive contests with another road tilt on Thursday.

This offseason, it looked like the Minnesota Timberwolves were going to seriously target a playmaking point guard. Instead of going down that path, Tim Connelly brought back largely the same group, and instead looked to shuffle opportunities.

Donte DiVincenzo was inserted into the starting lineup, and Mike Conley has taken more of a reserve role. While that is a straightforward swap, it still doesn’t address many of the issues Chris Finch’s rotation experiences.

Truthfully, the whole situation is a byproduct of the relative flop that Rob Dillingham has been thus far. Things may be getting late early there, and point guard help might become necessary for the Wolves to advance in the playoffs this year.

Ja Morant was just the beginning for the Minnesota Timberwolves

Earlier this month it was revealed that the Minnesota Timberwolves have been poking around regarding a trade for Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant. That fit is one worth exploring, but insider Mike Scotto sees the position as a whole worth watching for Minnesota.

While Edwards and McDaniels are viewed as young pillars for the Timberwolves, Minnesota’s due diligence on Morant signaled the team’s desire to upgrade at point guard and will continue to be on the agenda leading up to the trade deadline, league sources said.

While starting guard Donte DiVincenzo has played well, averaging 13.8 points on 38.8 percent shooting from downtown, and Mike Conley is a capable backup point guard, power forward Julius Randle leads the team in assists (5.8).

Combo guard Rob Dillingham, the former No. 8 pick of the 2024 draft, has yet to consistently carve out a significant role off the bench under coach Chris Finch, which has also been a noteworthy development.

Mike Scotto – Hoops Hype

Donte DiVincenzo is in the starting role he had always craved with the New York Knicks. His 31.2 minutes per game are a career-high, and he’s averaging 13.8 points per game on 41.6% from the field. Nothing DiVincenzo has done is a negative.

The problem is the depth behind him. Conley is 38 years old and his 20.5 minutes per game are a career-low. He’s averaging just 6.0 points per game, and shooting just 39.7% from the field. His 43.1% three point rate has been nice, but he’s just not in a place to consistently contribute anymore.

Then there’s Rob Dillingham. The 20-year-old does very little offensively, and his 37.5% shooting from the field is putrid. He’s also averaging almost as many assists (2.0) as he is turnovers (1.2) per game.

Dillingham isn’t a guy you can trust in a playoff rotation right now, and pushing DiVincenzo should be the goal. Morant would do that, but so too would many other potentially available players. The more Minnesota can get a creator at the point guard position, the better off Anthony Edwards can be away from the ball.

Currently at 10-7, coming off two bad losses and looking at an NBA Cup game against the 17-1 Thunder on Wednesday, Minnesota needs to turn the page.

If your sport doesn’t have a betting scandal right now you’re probably just doing it wrong. Seriously though, as different leagues continue to embrace the influx of cash flow brought on by legalized sports gambling, the problems continue to mount up for each sport.

In the NBA, multiple former Minnesota Timberwolves are caught up in the latest and juiciest betting scandal currently in the news.

After coaching against the team he used to play for on opening night of the season, Portland Trail Blazers head coach Hall of Fame point guard Chauncey Billups was arrested on charges involving the mob, rigged poker games and devices straight out of the next 007 film.

Chauncey Billups denies illegal betting allegations

Plenty has come out about his participation in illegal card games, some details of which have even involved Kevin Garnett. While we all have the right to our innocence until proven guilty, the outlook for Billups recently is not good.

Billups, who played for the MN Timberwolves for two seasons, from 2000 to 2002, will obviously have his day in court. And at least for now, the disgraced Blazers coach is sticking to his innocence, claiming he is NOT a Mob plant.

Portland Trail Blazers coach and basketball Hall of Famer Chauncey Billups pleaded not guilty on Monday to charges he profited from rigged poker games involving several Mafia figures and at least one other former NBA player.

The five-time All-Star, who won a championship with the Detroit Pistons, was arraigned in a federal court in New York City on money laundering conspiracy and wire fraud conspiracy charges, both of which carry a maximum punishment of 20 years in prison. Some of Billups’ co-defendants are also charged with running an illegal gambling business and engaging in an extortion conspiracy.

At a bond hearing later Monday morning, the judge released Billups on a $5 million dollar bond. The NBA Hall of Famer used his home in Colorado as collateral and his daughter Sydney, the Manager of Team and Player Services for the Minnesota Timberwolves, co-signed his bond.

ESPN

Former Minnesota Timberwolves guard up against it…

While rigging prop bets is also part of the problem, Billups’ involvement was tied to rigged poker games.

The ESPN report states that, “he served as a celebrity “face card” who could draw wealthy, unsuspecting players to the games. Prosecutors said during one game, the scheme’s organizers exchanged messages saying one of the victims “acted like he wanted Chauncey to have his money” because he was “starstruck.”

For a guy that earned more than $106 million during his playing career, it seems wild to get involved in such risky business. There is a possibility that Billups has different liabilities surrounding him, or simply believed in being too big to fail.

At any rate, this saga is far from over. It’s likely more names will come out that send shockwaves through the sports world. For now at least, Billups is trying to distance himself from blame.

Timberwolves First Round Pick Cleared for Return https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/minnesota-timberwolves/terrence-shannon-jr-cleared-injury-return-bone-bruise/ Mon, 24 Nov 2025 14:30:00 +0000 https://www.minnesotasportsfan.com/?p=72934 Terrence Shannon Jr., Minnesota Timberwolves
Jesse Johnson-Imagn ImagesJesse Johnson-Imagn Images

The Minnesota Timberwolves have been a mixed bag to start the season.

Facing the Phoenix Suns in NBA Cup action last time out, Anthony Edwards’ 40-burger was wiped out by a pair of missed free throws and a poorly decided inbounds pass that wound up costing the Wolves a victory that seemed all but certain, even seconds before it wasn’t.

Now 10-6, there’s a lot that this team still has to figure out if it wants to make another deep playoff run in a stacked Western Conference. 2024 first round pick Terrence Shannon Jr. was expected to be a key rotational player entering the season, but he has been sidelined for the past three games with a bone bruise in his left foot.

Injured Terrence Shannon Jr cleared to play

With the Timberwolves in Sacramento Monday night against a bad Sacramento Kings team, however, the former Illinois Fighting Illini standout has now been cleared for action, and will go into the game with a “questionable” injury designation.

Terrence Shannon Jr. was last active on November 3 against the Brooklyn Nets. In seven games this season he has seen his minutes per game jump from 10.6 in 2024-25 to 16.4.

We haven’t seen the production come along with his increased time on the court, however, as the 25-year-old is averaging just 3.9 points per game on 32.1% shooting.

Minnesota opted against grabbing a playmaking point guard to pair with Mike Conley this offseason, in large part due to their budget constraints, hanging just below the second apron.

Minnesota Timberwolves have a lot to figure out still this season

Instead, Donte DiVincenzo joined the starting lineup as the on-paper point guard, while Anthony Edwards has taken on most of the ball-handling duties. It remains to be seen if Ant at the point will be sustainable, or if president of basketball operations Tim Connelly will get itchy before the trade deadline.

Through 16 games this season, the Minnesota Timberwolves have feasted on inferior competition, while they’ve struggled against better teams.

Hopefully, getting Terrence Shannon Jr. back will help steady that ship, but he will have to play better than he did prior to injury, in order to have a positive effect on the rotation. We know the kid has it in him, because we’ve seen it.

The Minnesota Timberwolves made two first round picks last season, jumping up to take Rob Dillingham with the No. 8 overall pick, before snagging Shannon Jr at No. 27. So far, Dillingham looks like a bust, but he is young (20 years old).

If Connelly’s roster-building plan is going to work, as currently laid out, both Dilly and Shannon Jr. will have to look more like the first round draft picks they were selected to be. Otherwise, changes will need to be made. If not before the 2025-26 trade deadline, then likely during the offseason.

Karl-Anthony Towns was the Minnesota Timberwolves first overall pick in 2015. He became a staple for the franchise, and the trade to the New York Knicks still hits him today.

As big as Towns’ celebrity is, it’s easily trumped by his girlfriend Jordyn Woods. The couple has been together since 2020 and they have gone through plenty together. The Knicks big man turned 30 on Saturday and Woods got him the present of a lifetime.

Karl-Anthony Towns receives the present of a lifetime

Karl-Anthony Towns spent the first nine years of his professional career in Minnesota. The state became an extension of him, and he grew up with the Timberwolves. Now into his formative years, it’s Towns and girlfriend Jordyn Woods forming a life together. The influencer pulled out all the stops for a sentimental birthday gift this year.

The death of Karl-Anthony Towns’ mom Jacqueline Cruz was among the most substantial stories during the pandemic. She battled the newfound disease and ultimately passed away. Towns sharing that his dream car was simply one she drove him around in was enough for Woods to get to work. Ultimately landing the vehicle for him, the gift holds significant personal value.

Just in his mid-20’s at the time, it’s hardly a shock that Towns struggled to cope with his newfound reality. Confiding in Woods, Towns shared that a vehicle would bring back the memories of his mother. She went to work in a way that would present a meaningful outcome, and the heartfelt gift could not be more pefect.

Now a blossoming adult, Towns continues to find his way in New York. He is in his second season with the Knicks and is averaging 21.8 points per game through 12 contests thus far. He recently bested the Minnesota Timberwolves, and he is looking to follow up his third All-NBA performance from last year.

It remains to be seen what the future will look like for Woods and Towns. If a gift as thoughtful as the car purchase was is anything to glean on though, the former MN Timberwolves star has a keeper he should be looking to wife up in short order.

It’s been an up-and-down start of the season for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Chris Finch has his team sitting with a 7-4 record, but they have already been without superstar Anthony Edwards for a brief period of time.

It’s a positive that the Timberwolves have padded their record with matchup against the Utah Jazz and Sacramento Kings (who they will face again on Friday night). They very-well could need the cushion if the injury situations continue to pop up.

Into the foreseeable future now, they will be without emerging talent Terrence Shannon Jr.

Terrence Shannon Jr. shut down for Minnesota Timberwolves

Timberwolves guard Terrence Shannon Jr. has played in seven games this season, but has been out since November 3rd. He did not dress for the November 5th matchup against the Knicks, and has been inactive for the last three contests. That will continue going forward.

The shutdown of Shannon Jr. will have him missing at least five more games. Minnesota hosts Sacramento for an NBA Cup game on Friday night, and they are at Phoenix for another such contest a week from now.

Through seven games this season, Shannon Jr. is averaging 16.4 minutes per game with 3.9 points per game. He has shot just 32.1% from the field, although his 36.4% from deep is an improvement from last season.

It’s virtually impossible to evaluate anything Shannon Jr. has done this year in such a small sample size. However, with the Minnesota Timberwolves opting against acquiring a playmaking point guard, his responsibilities were expected to grow. The time off doesn’t help Shannon Jr.’s development, and he is a key member of the rotation.

Finch and the Timberwolves have to play the long-game with the youngster. The goal is an NBA Finals appearance and a championship. It will be on the rest of the team to pick up the slack in his absence.

Prior to his coaching career getting underway, and after his 15-year NBA playing career — which narrowly avoided a stint with the Minnesota Timberwolves multiple times — JJ Redick worked as an analyst for ESPN. But before he got his big shot on TV, the former Duke superstar became popular on the internet through podcasting.

Redick has hosted several successful shows on a variety of platforms (The Vertical, The Ringer, Yahoo Sports), before he created his own media company in 2020 and launched the “Old Man and a Three” Podcast, which he quickly took to the moon, before being hired as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers in 2024.

The now repurposed “Young Man and a Three” podcast is still putting out regular episodes and currently has 1.1 million subscribers on YouTube. But just in case you forgot about all of JJ Redick’s previous career experience, Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch is happy to remind you

Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch goes after Lakers JJ Redick on Zach Lowe Show

He did just that Thursday night, when (speaking of podcasts) he made an appearance on the Zach Lowe Show, which the longtime NBA insider was hosting live from Minneapolis.

Lowe’s show last night had a bunch of local guests, including Timberwolves guard Donte DiVincenzo, The Athletic beat writer Jon Krawczynski, and the star of Thursday’s show, Finchy.

And pretty much immediately after taking the stage, Minnesota’s head coach went after JJ Redick. As he sat down, Lowe and Finchy started a friendly back and forth about the former’s recent time off. That quickly turned into a joke on Lowe about how, as a retired podcaster, he is now qualified to coach the Lakers.

Lowe: “My wife was worried about me. She’s like, ‘You’re such a workaholic. What are you going to do?’ I was like, “Watch how amazing I am at doing nothing.’ It was great.”

Finch: “I bet three-quarters of these people are going to go home and do a podcast tonight.”

Lowe: “You’re going with the anti-media tropes right out of the gate?”

Finch: “Well, it will qualify to coach the Lakers, you know…”

Chris Finch has been coaching the Minnesota Timberwolves (currently 7-4) for parts of six NBA seasons already. The 56-year-old Pennsylvanian was hired exactly halfway through the 2020-21 NBA season, under circumstances that were far from ideal.

But all he has done in the four-plus seasons since taking the job is go 216-164 (.568), appear in four-straight playoffs and two straight Western Conference Finals, easily implanting himself as the most successful head coach in MN Timberwolves history.

MN Timberwolves HC & Lakers HC have a history

Now, context is king and it’s important to mention, given how divisive the above comments could come off, without it. See, Chris Finch and JJ Redick have a history that goes far beyond the Minnesota Timberwolves vs Los Angeles Lakers playoff matchup last summer.

JJ Redick played for Chris Finch when the two crossed paths in New Orleans back in 2019-2020, during the twilight of Redick’s playing career, and right before Finchy was hired as Wolves head coach.

Since then, the two friends have made it very clear how much respect they have for one another, meaning Finch’s jab at Redick was likely an inside job, between two friends, and not something that will fuel a future rivalry between the Wolves and Lakers.

“[Coaching JJ Redick] was an absolute pleasure…But it was interesting to coach JJ because I learned a lot from him. I never coached the shooter at that level and then just [seeing how teams] guarded him so differently than even a lot of really good shooters.

So he imparted a lot of tricks of the trade, things that he needed that he had seen through his career. So it’s like anything else, you always learned from really good players. So, not surprised that he’s had success. He’s got a very sharp basketball mind, relates to people extremely well. He’s super competitive. He has all the DNA.”

Plenty of Chris Finch vs JJ Redick in our future?

Having great players makes coaching a lot easier. And both Redick and Finch have enjoyed that luxury since their NBA head coaching careers began. For Chris Finch, he’s gotten to coach up the most talented player to ever put on a Minnesota Timberwolves jersey. Redick has had LeBron and now Luka.

No doubt about it, Anthony Edwards was already showing signs of his greatness back then, even if Karl-Anthony Towns was still the guy. But since Finchy has taken over, Edwards and his Wolves have flourished.

In the future, who knows what Ant and Finchy will do together. The hope is that they’ll end the 30-year curse currently hanging over the professional sports world in this town, and finally bring a men’s major-six title to a fanbase that hasn’t celebrated one since 1991.

To make that happen, however, they’ll have to go through a vaunted Western Conference that includes the likes of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s Thunder, Nikola Jokic’ Nuggets and Luka Doncic’ Lakers, a task that they have yet to fully master, as both Shai and Luka have knocked them out of the last two playoffs.

But for now, the Minnesota Timberwolves have the upper hand on Doncic, LeBron and JJ, whose Lakers they beat handily in last year’s playoffs. Even if the two are buddies, however, I bet Redick will be a little extra motivated to change that this postseason.

The Minnesota Timberwolves haven’t necessarily lit the league on fire this season, but they have handled business. Despite being without Anthony Edwards early due to a hamstring injury, they are still 7-4 with plenty of bright spots.

NBA Cup action kicked off last Friday and Minnesota handled business against a mediocre Utah Jazz team. They then got to see the same outfit on Monday and the result was the same. Former Timberwolves big man Kevin Love saw what was coming from the jump.

MN Timberwolves made things tough for Kevin Love’s new team

After spending 2.5 seasons in Miami with the Heat, Kevin Love signed with the Utah Jazz this offseason. Now in his 18th year, the 37-year-old has seen some things. He knows enough to see when an onslaught is coming, and he predicted it on Friday night.

This is what stars do. This is what leaders do. This is who Edwards, in his sixth season, has become. On a team filled with quieter personalities, Edwards is the blue flame that lights the water heater. Target Center is never louder than when Edwards is rolling. The Wolves are never more dangerous than when Edwards is on the hunt.

During that opening flurry, 18-year NBA veteran Kevin Love was watching from the Jazz bench.

“I looked at the rest of the guys and said we’re in for a long night,” Love said.

The Athletic

A long night probably wasn’t quite foreshadowing enough. The game in question resulted with a 40-point Timberwolves win. It was more of a statement than even the obnoxious green court they were playing on. Love played just three minutes but still logged a minus-6.

Edwards on the other hand, who logged a plus-32 in just 26 minutes, poured in 37 points. After missing four games, Edwards needed to get his legs back under him. That didn’t happen against the New York Knicks, but it played out in a big way against the Jazz.

Utah saw the same results repeat themselves on Monday night when Minnesota won by just seven points. It was a road game, but Edwards poured in 35 on 52% shooting.

As Love alluded to, it’s Edwards that is the difference maker for the Timberwolves. When the 24-year-old is on, he generates the level of hype only elite superstars can produce. Minnesota is hoping he can be on more often than not as they seek an opportunity to reach the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history.

Love has been around the league long enough to understand game flow. Chris Finch will try to generate positive momentum plenty for the Minnesota Timberwolves this season. If Edwards is playing at his best, then it wouldn’t be shocking to see him pick up his first MVP award along the way.

The Minnesota Timberwolves were on the road at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night, the old stomping grounds of Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo. It also meant the latest rendition of Karl-Anthony Towns vs his old teammates.

A little over one year ago, when Tim Connelly shocked the basketball world by sending his star big man to the Knicks, there was nobody more surprised by the news than KAT, Randle and DiVincenzo.

Not only did the trade shuffle the core of both teams, but it rattled the brains of all players involved. Both Donte and Julius were a shell of themselves for much of their first seasons as Wolves. Karl-Anthony Towns hasn’t been the same since, something that he’s made known publicly numerous times.

KAT can’t get the Minnesota Timberwolves off his mind

But before Wednesday’s game, over a year since the trade was completed, Towns again talked with media about how he’s still shocked over the deal to this day and that he still misses playing with his buddies back in Minnesota.

“I’m still stunned. It’s weird. You feel more like a Knick now after what we went through last year to get to the heights we went to, but it’s weird when you see that Timberwolves jersey. Especially them fire black ones that y’all got. Not being able to see Towns on the back is a weird feeling. I love those guys in the other locker room to death and would do anything for them, even if it wasn’t about basketball.”

Karl-Anthony Towns

It’s now been over a year since the Minnesota Timberwolves sent Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks. He spent nine seasons with Minnesota though, and was drafted first overall in 2015 as a 20-year-old. It’s hardly a shock he still has feelings for his former employer.

It’s rare that an athlete opens up as candidly as Towns did to Star Tribune reporter Christopher Hine above. Obviously, the star big man still has a very special place in his heart for the franchise he grew up with.

Last season during his first year with the Knicks, Towns made his fifth All-Star Game and was named to his third All-NBA team, proving his longing for Minnesota has not affected his play on the court in New York.

“Like I said, we built something special over there. They’re just a really, really, really good team. I was about to say we, but they’re a really good, really good team. Expect nothing less from them to be great out there and you gotta compete against it and just because you may know what they’re going to do doesn’t mean you can stop it. Tonight we did a great job as a team finding a way to win.”

New York bests MN Timberwolves

It was tough sledding for the Timberwolves on Wednesday night. Minnesota hung around for the first half while getting Anthony Edwards back on the court after his hamstring strain. Ultimately, they couldn’t keep up though. Towns talked about the game as well.

There was definitely rust for Edwards who finished with just 15 points and a -25 on the evening. Towns scored 15 against his former team, and was +15 while on the court.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are back in action on Friday against the Utah Jazz. They will debut their 2025-26 NBA Cup court for the first time.
